  • Soundproofing hacks promise quick, easy and cost saving ways to soundproof a room.
This video highlights common soundproofing hacks including; soundproof paint, soundproof wallpaper, adding carpets and rugs to soundproof a room. Along with using soundproofing foam and egg boxes.
Soundproofing and Sound Absorption are terms which are often confused. Soundproofing is trying to stop sound from getting into, or out of a room. A good example would be stopping sound from noisy neighbours getting into your home, or stopping the sound in your room from getting out and disturbing your neighbours.
Sound absorption on the other hand is improving the internal sound quality and acoustics within a room, by reducing the amount of echo and reverberation in the room
This video goes into more detail about the differences:

@moniquehorton8794 Thank you. It's always better to be honest so people can make a more informed decision, than be disappointed when the "easy" route doesn't work.

Imagine 'Influencers' trying 'sell' youtube videos on "10 hacks for cheap waterproofing!!"
There are no hacks for 'proofing' something, there are however hacks/bodges for acoustic 'treatment' such as DIY acoustic panels made from rockwool or as Phil mentions in the video, the use of soft furnishings to soak up some of the reverb in the room.
The issue is people use 'sound proofing' and 'acoustic treatment' interchangeably as if they are the same thing.

Hi Leon, thats exactly right. Our main target with this video was the amount of blogs and articles that pop up in our news feeds about cheap and easy soundproofing. They are mostly written by people like interior designers who have absolutely no knowledge or expertise in the complex science of sound. The articles tell people to use carpet or blankets and things to stop noise from neighbours.

Hi i have a stud wall between me and my neighbour and whos son like to bang on it and stomp in front of it will putting the flexisound 5 and then the acoustic board onto help to minimise the sound thanks

Hi @katiex3889, we wouldn't recommend that as a solution on its own. Both the FlexiSound and acoustic plasterboard are excellent soundproofing components when used in the correct way and in the correct quantities. They would for example be used with the ReductoClip System to make up the high mass layers (FlexiSound sandwiched between two layers of acoustic plasterboard). However, only advisable when used alongside the ReductoClip clip and bar system. Please take a look at the below video which goes into more detail on this and also talks about SoundBoard 4 which is a direct to wall soundproofing panel and is a great solution for low mass stud walls:

HI @UncensoredScion, The Soundproofing Store is very much about helping people. Sharing knowledge and expertise to ensure the correct advice and the correct soundproofing solution for individual noise issues. There is a lot of misleading 'hacks' for soundproofing which only leads to people being out of pocket and disappointed with the results.

I have 54sq meter property that’s poorly designed and neighbours can hear neighbours. I need to soundproof the inner shell of the flat and its floor. What is the thinnest and densest boards or rubber to use. Ceiling to floor is 250cm and I’d still like to insert shallow spots. Walls are brick that I will take down, leaving a single skin outer walls and cement floors and ceilings.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi @anonymousm1718, there is a lot to cover off here, so please do feel free to call us and we can discuss this in more detail with you (01423) 206208. A brick wall is solid and adds more mass to help block airborne noise, so taking it down will only reduce this capability. Also, the fact that concrete naturally has more mass than e.g. timber, means it usually does a better job of naturally blocking airborne noise. Because this isn't the case, you ideally need to find out why (again we can help advise on this). This blog might be of interest:

For the concrete floor take a look at the SoundMat 2 Plus Floor soundproofing solution:

    • @SoundproofingStore

Hi @chrismajor69, depending on the level of noise you are trying to soundproof against and the space you have to lose, this video gives 3 options:

You got it! Soundproofing is incredibly complex, there is no easy, cheap way of doing it. But unfortunately lots and lots of bad advice out there that people fall for.
