Old Vid, but just in case someone reads...lots of errors here (from 40 years of stainless fab in medical pharma industry--316L). First, you don't generate excess heat if you drill it correctly. It aint rocket science. Any machine shop should know that, but it is tons easier to punch with an iron-worker. Punching creates stress in the material, just so you know--warping where the holes go through. And "Electroplating"? A plating shop will just look at you. "Electropolishing" is what you want. No plating is put on. The electropolishing process makes the stainless much less prone to surface corrosion, although it may still happen in time. The process removes any surface free iron and other contaminants. It also makes it look purty.

I have a 1978 irwin 37 center and live in St Augustine FL. Where did you get your new chainplates made?

This helps me out a bunch! Thanks man

When drilling stainless steel one should use low revolutions and what is more one should cool it so very little heat is generated!

Where is part 2? Would like to see how you completed it. Thanks.

Some of the things he says are not correct. The problem with drilling too fast and creating heat is it work hardens the stainless not softens it.

Punching is cheaper and faster when you have the hydraulic punch to do it... However it also sets up WAY MORE STRESSES in the metal than does Drilling on a Drill press... Proper metal drilling is done at low speed (minus 500rpm } with sharp drill bits.. and when done that way very little heat is generated.. certainly not enough to remove the temper from marine stainless... For that you would have to get the metal over 600 degree's which would be almost impossible unless you had super dull bits and the drill speed and pressure relatively high.,, ie they lied to you.

+rainmechanic I prefer water cutting if available far more accurate than drilling and avoids contamination of the stainless.

Hey mate thanks for the vids! Just purchased a Gulf Star 37 in Fernandina. Would like to get some new Chainplates made for it. Do you mind sharing where you had the metal work done?

Bradley Stevenson just realized people can comment. oops! hope you got your chainplates done if hit me back.
