Hi Mandy and Lee. I was in Cyprus for 6 months under different conditions regrettably not sightseeing. I was there as a United Nations Peacekeeper to prevent a recurrence of fighting between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot groups; contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order; and contribute to a return to normal conditions. In addition to other tasks, UNFICYP personnel:maintain a safe zone between the ceasefire lines of the opposing forces; investigate ceasefire violations; carry out humanitarian activities; and support negotiations between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot groups. Because of the current unrest in the Middle East, Cyprus would not be my preferred holiday destination. Stay safe and take care of each other. Your favourite fan.....Mike
Hi Mike. Wow, you've certainly lived a fascinating life and seen a lot of action. It was quite remarkable that we went from the 50th anniversary of the Portuguese revolution to Cyprus which 1974 is also a significant date for! You may find our upcoming Nicosia vlogs interesting as we explore both sides of the green line in depth. It's fascinating to see how much work the UN do there. We even called in to the home for cooperation cafe in the safe zone by the Ledra palace. I had a personal attachment to Cyprus as my uncle served his military service there in 1959 guarding the Famagusta port in it's final year under British rule. We really found the whole island fascinating. Such an interesting history, both ancient and recent, make it a unique place to visit. 👍
