    So you commented on a FB post, thanks for sending me to your channel. I'm back to skating after about 23 years, stopped skating regular when I was 12 I think. I was quick to pick it back up and get back to doing what I remember doing when younger. Learning new stuff as an adult as proven difficult. (i'm also a little overweight) I have thought of the process in steps, and break it down. To transition to backwards, I figured out you need to be able to go sideways, and back again. I was stuck in a rut where I can smoothly transition to backwards, but backwards to forward was always more of a jump, both feet turning at once or very quickly and not a smooth step. Your insight to edges and location of the balance has helped a lot! I noticed in your video reviewing the Solaris boot you said you went to stiffer cushions to get a feel for it. I think this is what I need to do to pickup some of the elements I don't have down. I quickly went to softest cushions and run pretty loose and I'm comfortable doing what I have learned, but now find it hard to learn new things. I can one foot glide forward no problem, but backward is wiggly best I can describe, my foot is working overkill to stay going straight. Sideways right foot leading I'm very comfortable, but left foot leading having trouble putting power into my feet to keep moving. thanks for the video's. sharing with others at my rink, I think they will help a bunch. Rolling with Riedell 495 boot and reactor pro's. Anabolix 97s indoor rink.

      Hi! I remember you from the skate addiction group! Thanks for sharing your experience!
      I can definitely relate to what you’re describing here as I had a break from skating for a time in my life as well. Training my edges with discipline made a big difference in how I began to learn new things. I too struggled to get control of the edges when skating backward at one point (and am still training them). As I’m sure you’ve figured out, you are mostly on the front edges when going backward, so not being able to stay straight on one foot means you’re not yet in control of the front edges! But don’t worry! This is a common weakness that is difficult to overcome. Just keep practicing and work those stabilizers.
      Lastly, in quad skates I find that stiffer cushions are better for me, but I learned my edges on the ice doing hockey drills, where there is a very stiff transfer of power. I try to recreate this in my quads, but many people skate successfully with soft cushions. It’s all about what you’re doing and how much training you devote to your stabilizer muscles! Cheers 🍻 and good luck!

    • @kchappelle
      @kchappelle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are they called 'highs' because of the high center of gravity as a result of a bad mounting system?
      Give me Trinity mounting anytime. = low center of gravity...closer to what you get on ice-skates.
      Love my Powerslide HC Evo Pro and my Reign Hockey skates.
      I have Rollerblade Metro GM's, Seba Igors, Flying Eagle Drift 2's and they all sit on the shelf now since I got my HC Evos. So many plus's with the Evo's but a big one is...and this is paramount. The comfort level and support are top notch...even while...and I didn't think this was possible in any skate...but I feel I still get good blood flow and circulation to my feet all while giving me excellent support. I could skate on these all day.
      I recommend the Evo's to anyone. These cost a little more but worth every penny. Save up and get the best you can and don't make the mistake I did and spend so much money looking for the best or a skate that I'm happy with. Wish I bought these Evo's first... would have saved me a bunch.
      I'm living in Taiwan so I buy my skates on-line so I never know what I'm getting till I've got them. Take care. :"

    Are hockey stops for quads or nah? I don't do inline.
    EDIT: and should I disregard the idea of centre inline edges on quads since we don't have a centre wheel, it's just two in front two in back. The rest seems applicable though.

    How much flex should my skate shoe have? I tie my laces fairly snug. Suregrip rebels. While using my edges I glance down and see my
    Skate shoe is flexing quite a bit but I’m not
    Getting much out of the edges. While doing lemon for example. Should I loses my trucks a touch?

  • @StillAliveAndKicking_
    @StillAliveAndKicking_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good drills, you’re right, practising edges is key to good skating. One question. I am a decent ice skater, but when I am on inlines the wheels are naturally at an angle to the vertical. Is this correct or not? I suspect not as it’s something you see with novice ice skaters. I suspect the skates are too soft. That said, I can do forward and backwards skating including good crossovers.

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leif,
      Without seeing you skate and assessing your equipment I can’t be sure. However, if I had to guess I would say your pronation likely a combination of two things. One, as you said, the boots are too soft. Two you have been skating on a different medium in stiff ice skates that provide a lot of support and your muscles are not yet used to skating in a softer inline setup. As you get used to the different height and shape of the frame you’re dealing with now, you should develop better balance on the “blades” of your new skates.
      Another guess is.. you are an advanced skater on the ice and the amount of power you’re capable of exerting trough the skate is too much for it. Either way, take it easy and take your time with them. Your skills will transfer in no time! 😁⛸

    • @StillAliveAndKicking_
      @StillAliveAndKicking_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deez Skates Out of curiosity I put on my ice skates today, and even without the laces tied the holders and blades were vertical in my normal stance (feet shoulder width apart). These are very stiff carbon fibre ice skates. It has to be the inline boots that are at fault. I have to work hard to get the wheels vertical.

    Are hockey stops safe to perform on derby style quads?

  • @arcanenexus7833
    @arcanenexus7833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For tight turns, you said use your inside and outside edges to turn as tightly as possible while your balance is in your heels, are you using your back inside and outside edges or the whole blade?

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm... maybe I should make a video and clarify some more on this topic soon. In short, you centralize you’re pressure into the heels as you reach the peak of your tight turn, so it really depends on how tight your turn is. Turning occurs on the inside and outside edges, but as you need your turn to be tighter you will put more pressure into specific places.

    Is there any drill for leaning on side..my body is reacting very stiff

  • @arcanenexus7833
    @arcanenexus7833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    And do you tend to fall backwards while your balance is in your heels? Or do you not fall down backwards because of the knee bend

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your center of gravity is proper you shouldn’t be leaning backward and will not fall backward. Also, I try to think of it as pressing into the heels rather than balancing on the heel.

    • @arcanenexus7833
      @arcanenexus7833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I’m not leaning on my heels, I’m just putting more pressure on them to turn and if I want to turn faster and harder than I put more pressure on my heels correct? And how do I keep a good center of gravity so I don’t lean back ?

      I understand. Since I made that video people have opened my eyes to just how difficult it can be for some. For what it’s worth, there are a lot of good videos on TH-cam of how to stretch and gain the flexibility for it. If you search “Figure Skating stretches for hip flexibility” you will find some that can help.

    • @Golem1988

      @@DeezSkates ow, thanks for search direction :) Btw that edge breakdown is amazing knowledge and helps damn much. I've been ice skating like for few years and I would say I'm doing well... but some people on ice rink opened my eyes as well... I mean I can go backwards and forwards, do transitions and crossovers and do hockeystops and I'm doing it with sure. But... I'm missing so much fun without some "cool stuff" like mohawk and so on. And even with ice skasting experience this breakdown is awesome for me cause I found inline skates to be different than ice skates. This year decided to start inline skating, so for a quite a while I am like ask-a-question man and youtube-tutorial-man. With practice, offcourse. So thank you and keep doing what you are doing ;)

      For any activity you will get better power transfer you in a slate with a built in liner than one that can be removed, but thicker liners provide more comfort. It’s all about your personal taste and preferences. But ALL inline skates have some kind of liner. Hockey skates have thin liners but are great for power transfer. Freestyle skates like the FRX or FR1 models have a removable liner. My favorite skates have what’s called a built in liner, which all the Seba High models have, even the carbon ones.
