You can really see how the early designs were working with Holden's assertion that the Donnager was ugly. We can't say that about the final version, it's gorgeous, and I think that was a good choice by the art team. Ship designs in The Expanse are so good.

      I don't think it's stopped being ugly.

It reminded me of the anime _Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu_ (Legend Of The Galactic Heroes). I think that's the one. It had these massive fleet engagements that focused on the tactics that each admiral used.

Chris, I love your work. Not only in the media I enjoy, but also these videos about the development process of the ships' looks and such. I am a sf writer and I like to sketch out my ships I use in my stories, and like, it all stays in the concept phase cause they're mainly just for me, for reference if needed and such... but like, anyway, it's just so fascinating to see professionals' work in the field of ship design. It also provides a bit of a muse, getting to see the various types and, like, tones (I'm sure you follow) of ships possible and such

Example: mood board! I'd never thought of that but it's so perfect for the creative process, and essentially the method I use anyway, but I'd never thought about actually putting together mood boards as guidance and stuff.

Chris, I know there is an Art of The Expanse book- but an updated hardback coffee table tome just focussing on all the ships would be sorely welcome

Correction, the art on the right at 3:24 is from Titanfall, not Dead Space

The top part is a bit to "skinny" for my liking, beef it up 20% so that the side shots more resembles the 3/4 frontal concept image and we have a winner.

Excellent!! - Thanks for putting this together!! Awesome to see the variety of styles & the revisions they go through until it becomes the Donnie we all know.
Love how many of the WETA designs have an almost organic feel to them - were some of those ideas translated over to Jules Pierre’s yacht?
Thanks again for the behind the scenes info!

I like the final design for the Donnager in the final render, but it's a shame the WETA design wasn't used for something else since it's really cool and has a nice character and uniqueness to it. I also can't see how the Northfront design is a continuation of that design process. It feels more like they just threw away WETA's design and made a completely new one.

I really wish we would’ve gotten some akin to fighters in the expanse. The idea of a thousand bee stings can bring down the largest animal just makes sense in the world of space battles. Tbh I can see the pros and cons of both mindsets and it doesn’t take anything away from the show for not having them.
