I can't imagine anyone who has watched this couple over the past few years ever questioning their passion for giving their animals the best life possible for however long they live. They are educated, well read researchers who constantly update their knowledge and skills. They conservatively try new ideas and always take climate changes into consideration. They keep the animals clean and well-fed and protected.
Exactly! This is their livelihood, and I've watched so many times and thought they were being too protective. But this is how Joel Salitan does it so it can't be a bad system.
The people complaining have never raised rabbits, these rabbits are domesticated animals. You are supplying them with food, water and shelter from predators, things they don't always get in the wild. Great job.
The last time I checked this is still America and you have freedom of choice. You have a choice of eating meat or just veggies. As long as they take care of them in a human way then just move on. You don’t have to watch. Out in the wild rabbits have to contend with the weather, things eating them including other rabbits. These people take very good care of there animals.
I got married at 18 and lived next to my MIL. On the other side of her was a rabbit "farmer". He was also a "hidden" alcoholic but we all knew when he was tanked because you could hear him singing, talking and drinking to his herd. He was a good man and those rabbits were so well taken care of. He keep he and his wife well fed and bills paid through his rabbit and meat sales. RIP Mr. Ben!!
Raising rabbits. In cages , off the ground is perfect for many reasons. I lovebthe fact after they are old enough you raise them on the ground. Excellent idea. Y'all are Doing it right. Ignore the naysayers. Lol. As usual a great and helpful video. Thanks.
I'm 75 and raise rabbits in North Texas. My cages, like yours, are suspended 4 feet above a concrete floor (I'm 6'6" tall, so 4' is a nice working height for me) resting on welded steel 1" angle iron. I hang a plastic tarp fastened with zip ties through gromets that I added, attached the full length of the cages, fastened front & rear. I put a length of 1/2" PVC water pipe down the center, forming a "V" so all the poop, pee & debris collect there. Twice a week, I park a 5-gallon bucket at one end and hose down the tarp, all the "stuff" landing in the bucket. I then dump the bucket into one of several compost bins. My rabbitry always smells fresh and clean. I do something similar in my hen house.
They do work around the home cook good food and share their farm best team growing a farm. So their not safe on the ground WOW! Wet and cold on the ground Awwww better to have them up high good job! Chickens are small life eat tell four months maybe less. Rabbits are lucky they have you two as care taker's👍 green field beautiful tree's.
Isn't is so ironic how people who have never tried raising animals- more than a couple pets, always have such large opinions and judgments for people that are actually doing it? I also find it ironic how we have the worst health, food, and most pollution and animal death now- than the history of the world- but everyone wants to trust human intervention more than nature- when nature never screwed the world up as much as us and our large industries have. If there is hope for the world, it is through brave, resilient, small farmers. Thanks for your videos guys!
YOU GUYS ARE DOING JUST FINE. My wife and I in our 30s had a rabbit farm for 8 year. we sold to two meat plants for military. We had 40 breeding does and when the bunnies got to 3to5 lbs. they would pick them up. But the only thing we had no time to do anything other than care for them so we sold out. Good luck guys
As a person who's had rabbit as pets I appreciate you. I understand there is a difference between a pet and an animal that is being raised for meat. I think you should consider giving rabbits hay (not alfalfa) to the rabbits while they are being kept in the wire cages. I am so glad you care for all your animals so well. Thank you for making such good and thoughtful content.
I really don't understand why people would actually question what you guys are doing? I believe if they actually watch your videos and follow your channel as many of us have, you will see first hand how you guys care for your animals and tend to them. Unfortunately there will always be someone that disagrees! I think you have an awesome set up that covers what may be a potential threat to your animals! Great job looking forward to more videos of your new Homestead.
I love you both. I am a Senior Citizen and watch you everyday. You are both wise and doing the right thing. You may need a help hand on the Farm. God bless you both abundantly!
I am a 67 year old retiree who will never do more than grow tomatoes in pots, but I find all of the facets of homesteading absolutely fascinating. This may be something you already know, or it may not apply to your situation, but Joel Salatin at Polyface Farms has a rabbit/chicken combo operation that is evidently doing well. The rabbits are in cages suspended from the ceiling allowing a large area under them for the chickens to roam at will. The ground is covered with wood shavings and hay. There are several videos on this, but in the end, the rabbits are safe, the chickens are happily foraging and keeping the rodent population at bay, and they both are supplying fertilizer by way of their poop for the gardens. With your rabbits raised up, you could easily have a group of chickens doing their chicken thing underneath.
Good morning Kevin and Sarah wow you guys are really doing very well and I just wanted to say how much I love your new Farm gorgeous very nice! Congratulations!
Love your hanging rabbit cages; we did the same. Raised meat rabbits for several years, no problems. Then my husband passed away and I stopped raising everything but some chickens. I had a chicken setting some eggs I was pretty sure that were fertile, so I moved her into one of the rabbit cages so she could eat and drink close to her eggs and not worry about the other hens. Well, I went out one morning to see her fighting like crazy. A very large Black Snake was in the cage with her and had eaten all of the eggs. (It won't do that again ;) Cover those cages with 1/4" wire. Snakes can get in, and they'll eat the kits. My place is near Eminence, not terribly far from you. Congrats on your new piece of land; makes me wish I was young again and doing what you're doing. Such a beautiful life.
I want to thank you guys for your videos. My husband passed on Jan 1 and one of many things that I didn't think I would be able to do this year was have a garden because of all the maintenance that he mostly took care of. Thanks to your recommendation of the woven weed fabric and a neighbor who tilled for me i now have what I hope to be a very productive garden.... and mostly weed-free! I'm planning on doing a lot of preserving this year as well-- in smaller jars. Again, thank you! You have truly been a blessing to me and I know finding you on TH-cam was a total God thing--a divine appointment.
Since this covid cr@p started we have been selling more live rabbits than butchered rabbits. Our herd was down to really low levels and now we are starting to bring up our numbers agains. Another thing you can use inside the cage instead of board is tile. I have found that putting in a 12" tile will last longer and will not absorb urine and is so much easier to clean off. Congrats on the new farm!
I have a big 20 pound bunny. She was a doe that didn’t want to breed and she kept escaping from her cage with the breeder. They gave her to us. Suzzie has been a pet and we decided that we can’t kill her. We use the rabbit poop in our garden and greenhouse. She has been destructive of her cage and every time I give her a mat to sleep on, she tears it up. I will give her a piece of wood. Thank you for sharing this.
I’ve been watching your channel for sometime now always enjoy it . You always have good information and I thank you for that. Everything you do you put 100% in including taking care of your animals. Thank you for sharing.
I live in the rural NW corner of NJ and raised rabbits years ago when my children were younger, however it is no longer safe to go so even with electric fence due to the extreme severe problems we have with the ever growing Black Bear population. My rabbits were in wire cages that had nesting boxes with a wood floor, I never experienced any issues with my rabbits on wire. I raised Red and Copper Satins. Love your way of life! While I can’t have farm animals in just 1 acre we sustain our life via my big garden, heated green house and hunting. All of our red meat is venison and bear, we butcher and process all of our own meat.
I raised rabbits for years but always on wire. Couldn't keep them on the ground because of foxes, coyotes, coons and bears. Never had any problem with the rabbits' feet, gave them a couple of wooden planks like you're doing. Good job and great video.
You guys rick. And know more about this than most. I live in the desert and wild rabbits only come out at dawn and then again at dusk. Your more likely to see them at nighttime when it is cooler.
The only questions I would have for the 2 of you is something I didn't know about. I love your videos. They are super educational. Any person that raises their own meat for food what's the animal to be cared for. Healthy animals are better food. I know people do not want to associate a live animal with the meat they eat. They just see a hunk of meat under plastic wrap. They do not know how it was raised.
I love the plumbers strap as well. I usually wrap it all the way around whatever I plan to hang and then use one screw through both sides once I have it in place to secure it to the wall.
Watching you put up the wire rabbit hutches reminded me of our families experience with raising rabbits. We had the does along one wall behind the garage, and down at the end of the row of five cages/hutches, we had the buck. Well, when the does would have babies, after a few days they would kill the babies. My dad talked the the folks at the feed store and found out that the does see the buck and kill the babies to keep the buck from doing it. He would do it to bring the does back into heat. We moved the buck around the corner of the building, out of site of the does, this solved the problem and we raised and ate many rabbit dinners. We also sold the pelts to make money.
We also raise Silver Fox rabbits and love them. We are raising them the same way you are doing but we built the nesting boxes out of hardware and attached them to the bottom of the cage.
If you put two bucks side by side in a cage make sure you have a smaller wire cloth between the two because they can bite each other and can become aggressive.. love watching❤
Sometime tell us more about your new farm, number of acres, is there a house, will you move there, are you moving all your animals there, etc. Love your youtube, you’re great folks. Keep living your dream! Looks like a great place. Thanks👍
❤️ Thank you for this educational video. I found a local homesteader rabbitry and will be picking up a buck and 2 does next week (New Zealand fawn/mixed). I’ve got my 3 cages and will be hanging them inside my covered 24’ chicken run. This is close to overwhelming for me and I appreciate the calm logic you present. I can do this! 🐇🐇🐇
We are not raising rabbits nor do we intend on starting, but I have no doubt you two have perfected it - thanks for sharing love learning from you both whatever the topic
We are about to get our first Silver Fox next weekend then 2 more in 2 weeks then one more in 10 weeks. I can’t wait 🤗🤗🤗🤗 thank you for introducing use to them. 😍😍😍😍
You're so right about the rabbits preferring to be out of the sun.... all the ones around here on our property, all 9 million ;), all stay out of the direct light and do come out at dusk. Just subscribed a couple of videos ago... You guys are definitely the most gentle and humane caretakers of your livestock. Also like the way You work together as a couple.
I stumbled onto your program. The first one I watched was when you were feeding the pigs. I called my sister in Georgia because we raised pigs, rabbits chickens where we were. I remember taking leftovers up to feed the pigs it was called slopping the Hogs and I loved it but when I saw you giving them grain or pallets whatever you gave them I couldn't remember if my father did. I'm sure he did because we didn't have much left to feed anything after we ate so my sister and I were cracking up laughing and trying to remember those days. I've loved your program and it makes me cry. But it's a good feeling a good cry and I'm glad other people are out there doing these things good luck. I also don't like to eat rabbits only because I used to have them as pets and then years went by before my sister told me that Dad actually kill the rabbit so we could haven't them to eat. I really didn't know that I just know Dad went into the woods after my rabbits with Xscape at least that's what he said they did and then he would find me other rabbits to take care of. But I do love fried squirrel but where I live in the city I can't get it. Good luck on your Endeavor with your new Farm and I know you will take really good care of the rabbits. You seem to be very caring and intelligent when it comes to them. May God bless you and your family and farm
I have raised rabbits for a long time. Cages are the best for them. Period. My Rabbits are in the quail barn. Two Standard Rex doe and one buck. I use floor tiles for them to get up off the wire.
I hope I can articulate this in a way that makes sense. Watching your last (exciting!) video, I, too, was concerned about the rabbits in the cages. But, I've followed you for long enough that I know your characters, and I know that whatever it is that you are doing, whether it makes sense to me or not, is for the best. You are thoughtful, meticulous, compassionate people, and I know that you would never do anything to harm your animals. It's the same approach I take in my relationship with God. Whenever he does something that I don't like or understand, I focus on his character, not on his actions. I know beyond a doubt that he is compassionate, merciful, and loving, and that whatever it is he is doing is for the best. Even so, thank you for explaining your methodology to us. Knowing your characters, I assumed there were good reasons behind it. I knew just there was so much more than the tiny little snippet of the cages that was in the video. And I was right.
God is not a only compassionate, loving, and merciful TRIUNE LORD but he is also a righteous, Holy ,glorious, sovereign, majestic, wrathful , just God. I know that wasnt the point of your comment but I just wanted the reader to know the entire truth. In this day and age of God is love love love and God loves everyone(which is a lie) ; people need to know that God will sentence them to the lake of fire for an eternity of they do not repent and turn from their sin and trust in Christ. So many are guilty of idolatry. Are you? “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3You shall have no other gods before Me. 4You shall not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens above, on the earth beneath, or in the waters below.… They have made up a god in their minds that suits their sinful life. His name is satn who masquerades as light!! 2 Tim 4 :3-4, gal 1:8, ephesians 2:5 If our God isnt biblical ; he isnt YHWH/ADANAI! May the Lord bless those who trust in Christ with all of their hearts, minds ,souls, and strength. Amen.
Great idea to get the rabbits up off the wire. My wife and I use and recommend using a piece of tile. With the air flow around the cage the tile will actually cool the rabbits faster and it won't absorb moisture if it gets wet. I would recommend NOT killing the black snakes as they kill venomous snakes. Use a small opening hardware cloth for the perimeter of the rabbit tractors. It will not allow the snakes access to the rabbits or bunnies.
I have an 18×18 tile in each cage. I thought about wood planks but my buck that's outside poops regularly so I'm really glad i used tile. Even my little man( dwarf Netherland bunny) has a 12×12 tile. I love the fact that they can lay down and stretch out on their tiles. But like i said my cages are big. They have plenty of space to run and play and stretch out.
I agree with you 100,000% about the rabbits. Years ago, I lost all my baby rabbits by having them in the rabbit tractor. Now I know what I did wrong, thank you. I love your methods.
So true about the safety. We tried free ranging our NZW buck and it worked great until we had a snake get ahold him. The snake wasn't even big enough to eat him either. We decided to only free range during the day with our dog or us outside. I would rather have them in a pen safe, than have to lose another to predation. I live in SW Mo as well and just want to say thanks for all your advice and keep up the great work sharing experience and helping people like me start our own homestead.
just got into raising rabbits ourselves. we have a lean-to from previous owner against the pole barn - so we put our rabbits in there and hung cages as well. one thing i did that I have not seen in any other rabbit video on youtube, was to help support the hanging cage a little bit better. i took a piece of 1/2 emt conduit and ran it across the front top inside corner of the cage... and the same along the top back inside corner of the cage... and my hooks wrap in and around that conduit. just to help distribute the weight of the cage and stuff in the cage across all of the 14ga wire from the top... vs just a couple small sections of the wire.
Love your new place! You are right, it is much safer to raise the baby bunnies up off the ground. I tried the rabbit tractor for kindling babies, and my biggest problem was dew that momma carried in on her fur. Any amount of wet on new babies is a death sentence in the making. I went back to the same method as you are now using, and haven't had any problems since. Like you I do put my weaned babies in the tractors to grow and finish out. Don't let the negative people get you down, you know what is best for your animals. God Bless.
People can be so nosey and off the beaten path it’s unreal! I feel bad y’all need to justify why you have to protect your livestock, everything looks amazing! Happy rabbits and happy homestead! Thanks for the info!!
Congratulations on the new property. It is beautiful. If people have followed you for more than a week they would know how well your animal’s are treated. Keep up the excellent work.
I agree with you 100% concerning wire cages. I raised heritage breed meat rabbits for over 10 years for both show and meat (Silver Fox, American Chinchilla, Creme d'Argent) as well as New Zealand and Californian. I haven't had any rabbits in the past couple years because of so many dog attacks from neighbor dogs coming on our property (we had 75 breeders). We plan on moving in the next few years once my husband retires to live in a more rural setting. Where we will raise a few different animals for meat, build a nice size greenhouse and have more land for a larger garden...even though we are now empty nesters!! I love your new place...it's seems perfect!! ❤️P.S. I can't wait to receive your rabbit cookbook, I see it recently shipped!! 😉
If I was an animal I would want the 2 of you taking care of me! :) All your animals look very healthy and clean. I am new to watching you. Keep up the good work and thank you for the videos.
I can't imagine anyone who has watched this couple over the past few years ever questioning their passion for giving their animals the best life possible for however long they live. The complainers are usually the same people who don’t know where their food comes from.
Amen !! Or even giving a thumbs down . They just need to scroll on . This is one of my most favorite homesteads to follow . ❤️♥️
Agreed! Why I love them is their passion for living their own best life and the best life for their animals!
Hey it's there animals they can raise them the way they see best. Which is the way they're doing it, in a professional humane way.
The people complaining have never raised rabbits, these rabbits are domesticated animals. You are supplying them with food, water and shelter from predators, things they don't always get in the wild. Great job.
many people have a hard time understanding the difference between a pet and a farm animal but I think you are doing great at raising your animals.
Pets have names
Farm animals have numbers
Black snakes eat venomous snakes and of course mice. Love your cage set up.
If you can get free large ceramic, etc flooring tiles, they like those during the summer (cooler) and they are easier to disinfect than wood.
Can they chew on the tiles?
@@jenniferrescott1149 no they are ceramic and perfectly safe for them
@@jenniferrescott1149 You can put tree clippings, fruit twigs in for them to chew on.
they can and do slip on the tiles and can be injured. turn them over and use the back if you use these
Habitat for Humanity Restore has reasonable tile often. I like the idea of upside down for traction.
Buying land is always a good thing. I hear they ain't making it any more... Good luck and blessings.
That is what my dad always said...buy land, God ain't making any more.
Volcanoes make new islands in the middle of the ocean. You can get new land there.....

How close is the new farm to your current homestead? I am so excited for your family!
Is there a house on your new farm?
Yes I wondered the same
Is likely very close
They considered. Made complete arrangements. And it isnt what you think. Not our business. They deserve privacy.

Food raised right tastes better! Thanks for sharing your journey!

We also raise Silver Fox rabbits and love them. We are raising them the same way you are doing but we built the nesting boxes out of hardware and attached them to the bottom of the cage.
I agree with everything you have said. I like the idea of tractors and hanging cages
If you put two bucks side by side in a cage make sure you have a smaller wire cloth between the two because they can bite each other and can become aggressive.. love watching❤
Fantastic work Kevin and Sarah. Supporting you all the way!
Sometime tell us more about your new farm, number of acres, is there a house, will you move there, are you moving all your animals there, etc. Love your youtube, you’re great folks. Keep living your dream! Looks like a great place. Thanks👍
You're doing fine with your rabbits. I agree with your reasons
Thank you so much for this video. It's a help to us with our rabbits. Especially the wood for them to sit on.
Do you guys realize how much God has blessed you! Thanks for sharing those blessings with the rest of us who are unable to live as you are! Thanks
Thank you! I appreciate ALL of your very informative videos!😁
good choice keep up the good work this comes from from one old viet-nam vet watch you all the time
We are not raising rabbits nor do we intend on starting, but I have no doubt you two have perfected it - thanks for sharing love learning from you both whatever the topic
It was so sweet when you were petting the Silver Fox male...he was like aahhh that feels good, lol!
Yes very helpful and informative you guys are great and such a blessing, God bless
You guys must have a pretty colourful calendar with everything planned out etc!
Love the new Homestead, nice country living.
Oooo Can't wait to see all the babies!!!
CONGRATULATION ON YOUR NEW FARM AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU SHARE HOW TO RAISE ANIMALS AND GARDENING. BLESSING FOR YOU ALL
I have raised rabbits for a long time.
4You shall not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens above, on the earth beneath, or in the waters below.…
They have made up a god in their minds that suits their sinful life. His name is satn who masquerades as light!!
2 Tim 4 :3-4, gal 1:8, ephesians 2:5
If our God isnt biblical ; he isnt YHWH/ADANAI!
May the Lord bless those who trust in Christ with all of their hearts, minds ,souls, and strength. Amen.
Congratulations!!! You look so happy and I’m happy for you. God Bless you 😃
Great idea to get the rabbits up off the wire.
I live in SW Mo as well and just want to say thanks for all your advice and keep up the great work sharing experience and helping people like me start our own homestead.
beautiful new property you have there guys.
You guys are absolutely right! 👍
What a beautiful area on your new farm. I'm sure the rabbits will love it.
I hope so!
Wishing only bountiful and blessings ahead for your family and farm.
Cute baby bunnies! I used to raise giant chinchilla bunnies! They look somewhat similar to the silver fox rabbits.
just got into raising rabbits ourselves. we have a lean-to from previous owner against the pole barn - so we put our rabbits in there and hung cages as well.
one thing i did that I have not seen in any other rabbit video on youtube, was to help support the hanging cage a little bit better. i took a piece of 1/2 emt conduit and ran it across the front top inside corner of the cage... and the same along the top back inside corner of the cage... and my hooks wrap in and around that conduit. just to help distribute the weight of the cage and stuff in the cage across all of the 14ga wire from the top... vs just a couple small sections of the wire.
Thank you! I should have watched this video before the others I commented on. It gave me a lot of information.
Love your new farm
Congratulations on the new property. It is beautiful. If people have followed you for more than a week they would know how well your animal’s are treated. Keep up the excellent work.
I enjoyed this video and loved the rabbits. I also love how you farm the animals for food. I eat meat.
Your lifestyle is looking better and better everyday.
If I was an animal I would want the 2 of you taking care of me! :) All your animals look very healthy and clean. I am new to watching you. Keep up the good work and thank you for the videos.
I know you love all your animals. I like to see you with the pigs. So happy for you and the new farm. God bless you.
Awe, you rabbits are beautiful. Love the new cages. You are excellent rabbit parents. Thanks for the tour. 💖
Well you know best and keep teaching us. Stay healthy and be safe.
