These instructions were clear and accurate. I followed them and successfully cut down a mini SIM to a nano SIM in a few minutes. I used 180 grit sandpaper to decrease the thickness of the SIM. It was also helpful in doing final adjustment to the width. In the end the new nano SIM fit in the carriage perfectly in all three dimensions. It wasn't as hard as I'd thought. Thanks for the great instructions!
So I bought a 3.8" phone several years ago, which used a mini-SIM. Then I bought a 4.7" phone, and that used a micro-SIM. Now I have a 5.96" phone coming soon, and it needs an even smaller nano-SIM. What's going on? Who keeps wanting to put smaller and smaller SIMs into phones that just get bigger and bigger? In a couple of years, am I going to buy a phone so big that I have to store it in a backpack, and they'll tell me I have to get a new atom-SIM the size of a needlepoint?
my theory is that one of the reasons why sims are getting smaller and smaller is to enable the phone manufacturers to accomodate more other fancy components to the smart phones. ie. the nano-sim enables extra space for more and more tiny electronic components to be added on the phone device.
Fal Teot i don't want to agree with you. Whether its nano or micro sim, the space accommodate in the mobile is just the same. Look at the tray for nano sim....they are as big as mini sim. For me it doesn't make any sense. The company is just doing something different so that the consumers will have something to talk about. They are all part of marketing mix strategy.
Richard Smithson I agreed with Richard, Why make it smaller when the cellphones need smaller trays and sliders to insert the cards and moreover the sims always come in the default credit-card size holders. Then you get cellphones that take only one type of sim card.
Holy crap! Thanks for the insight. Maybe the reason why the sim cards are getting smaller is because of the need of space for the new features. Since the older ones doesn't have much features in it that's why they don't require smaller sim. That's just my opinion I don't really know the reason behind it. But it seems like people are enjoying bigger screens, it's kind of like the "new thing".
This was surprising simple. I spent way too much time searching round the house for sand paper, tape etc and in the end it was really easy with just the scissors. Worked first time with no sanding. Cheers!
just wanted to say i followed your instructions AND IT WORKED! i didnt even have to sandpaper the back. my galaxy s9+ tray took the mini sim just like that. in forums everybody kept saying you should never cut the metal part but thats obviously wrong. my mini sim even looked way different from yours, it was oversized on all four sides, but its important to look for those grind marks that your phone leaves on the sim card. thats the important bit. i used one of those mini-micro-nano adapters as a guide. just left the nano part open and put it on top of the mini sim, then drew the nano-sim lines and cut it. again, watch for the marks. thats where your phone connects. A+
Fun little tutorial. I came to learn that i cut my sim card far too much, so the extra tape helped me out in making my simcard still stick and be useable. Worked flawlessly.
Worked with no problems. Didn't use the template. Had a nano sim to use as the template. Scored the sim with a razor and cut along marks with kitchen knife. Used sandpaper to thin the chip and round the corners. Appreciate the tutorial.
Totally cut my sim card using your guidelines. Didn't use a template or draw lines as I could tell where I needed to cut it. Did sand it down, popped it in the new device and it totally worked. Had I not seen your video, though, I never would have attempted it. Thanks!!!!
Sitting here in 2021, and looking back, I would not have trusted myself to cut up a SIM card, but I still done it anyways, so much easier to just pop it out of the card today
Holy shit. I just did it .. I even cut a piece of the gold part off .. and it worked RIGHT AWAY! .. Bought an S7 and had a Micro SIM that I cut into a Nano SIM. Thank you for this!!! Saved me $20
Works AWESOME on my new Nexus 6 that Verizon said couldn't be used on their network. I bought it off Ebay brand new still in box from a dealer who had sold over 1000 of these. Just took my old SIM, used your excellent template and instructions, cut it down, and wham, Verizon on the phone they said would not work. Verizon couldn't help, Motorola couldn't help, but you sir, did help me :-)
I just used *Norton SandWet Waterproof Super Fine 400 Grit* sandpaper to make my microSIM a nanoSIM. Very quick and painless and I daresay more precise than cutting. This SIM has followed me from phone to phone since it was a regular sized SIM in 2012!
With any other product than "Norton SandWet Waterproof Super Fine" it wouldn't have worked at all, that's for sure. Essentially vital information right there!
Articles and this video makes it a lot harder than it really is. I tested the procedure first on an extra micro SIM I had. I didn't use a template or anything. I basically just cut all the sides off as close to the metal edges as possible. Once done, I inserted it into my new phone...and it was detected! I then did the same thing to my own micro SIM and, again, it worked. Neither SIMs I cut even looked that great or anything, but it fits in and it works. Thank goodness too. If it hadn't, I would have lost usage of my phone for several days while a new nano SIM is shipped in.
Did this with nothing but a pair of scissors and worked great. Saved me a 3-4 day wait for a copy to be made. Definitely works if you pay attention and do it right.
Just bought a One Plus 5T and had to cut my micro SIM into a nano SIM. Thanks to your video I was able to do it really quick. Great video! Thanks so much!
i don't know what kind of cut you mean but when i got my first sim card it was in the full size sim card adapter thing and my dumb and useless and french fry and chips feasting sister wanted to cut the telia logo out of the full sized sim card adapter so she ruined the sim card adapter without my permission
Thanks just needed to know this would work. For anyone afraid of messing up, I did it by eye since i had a old micro sim and my printer didn't have ink. My sim card looks janky but it works. Just undercut and sand down.
Didn't even realize this was Unboxtherapy till I looked at the discription!!!!! thought id know Lew's voice anywhere. gotta watch more older vids now!!
Can phone companies provide nano sim for the same phone number for which you had a micro sim? That would save the hassle of all cutting & grinding trial & error shit.
To actually have SIM cards nowadays is the real problem. Modern phones could easily do without SIM cards alltogther. It would safe space and ressources and you just use a username and password to log into your mobile carrier.
The process was extremely easy! I've already converted a Mini SIM to Micro SIM for an LG G4 and a Mini SIM to Nano SIM for a Samsung Galaxy A7. Thank you very much for your video, it helped a lot. Keep up the good work! I subbed!
I took your advice just to cut it as close to the gold part as I could, without cutting into it, and voila! works like a charm. Didn't bother with the paper, lines, etc. but I did use my kitchen scissors.
Raeed harun Because when the phone keeps getting smaller and smaller, you need as much space as possible for the electronics, so whatever you can reduce in size, has to be reduced in size. The plastic around the sim is completely unnecessary...
Worked perfectly for me. I went from a Note 4 (micro Sim) to Nexus 6P (nano Sim). No problems at all. Thank you for this! I just used Scotch Precision scissors that I got from CVS and worked great. Was very easy to cut.
yeah i got a iphone 5s today, and i have the same problem. But u can order it instead its much safier + the guarantee on the phone wont be able if you do something wrong and the phone gets damaged. So i would recommend go to a shop and let them use their tools or order a nano sim card for only 2-5 dollar
thank you for the tip, i really dont know anything about iphone's doe before the iphone i had a LG 4XHD which was the worst phone on the whole planet. It worked in like 5-6 weeks and then the battery runs out faster, the phone gets slower i mean i had my lg 4xhd for 1 year and it very slow and my dad have a iphone 4s and its still working just fine. And for sure it maybe got some good android phone's on the market like Samsung Galaxy but i mean the lg was pretty expensive and worked in like some weeks
i just done this with both my sims and they both work fine. only tip i can give When you sand it down to make it thinner is and the back until the colour comes off then you will see numbers only on the back keep sanding until the numbers are not visible anymore that is the perfect thickness so you will not need to keep checking the thickness hope it helps
For all the people complaining about the link, I did it by hand, eyeballing it the whole time from looking at how much he was cutting off, I would cut off a small amount and try to fit it, then go from there, whole thing took me ten minutes and it works first try, didn't even have to sand it down. This was great because I'm a sloth and don't want to go places , like a Verizon store, I also saved $40 on the activation fee.
Print template, line up, use atg tape to hold micro sim to template, fine edge marker, use credit card as straight-edge, make lines, wusthof shears for precision, 5 cuts, slip inside new phone- works perfectly!
Some people will tell you that using a chisel is the best tool for the job. I say, grow a pair and be a man *pours whiskey* *lights cigar* First you need your micro sim card. Then, you need a table. Then, you need this, *pulls starter chord on chainsaw, Brrrrrrrrprpprpprrrr Brrrrrrrprpprrprr* Then, you take a drink of your whiskey. Oh my gosh. I didn’t think this was actually going to work! I messed up my cuts and it still worked!
got mine cutted , Mini to Micro then to Nano
don't need sanding , push slightly harder for it to go in.
What's next.... Nano SD card? or perhaps, Pico sim card?
Nano's already there
yocto-sim, imagine that :)
Oh good lord, they have changed SD card sizes now? FU Huawei...

I've never had to do this. All of my phones have come with sim cards already in them.
Or they have pre-build cuts to just snap off
I cut it with a chainsaw.
Some people will tell you that using a chisel is the best tool for the job. I say, grow a pair and be a man *pours whiskey* *lights cigar*
First you need your micro sim card.
Then, you need a table.
Then, you need this, *pulls starter chord on chainsaw, Brrrrrrrrprpprpprrrr Brrrrrrrprpprrprr*
Then, you take a drink of your whiskey.
Then, *proceeds to cut sim card up into oblivion*

And that's how a real man cuts his sim card.
