This video teaches viewers how to cut a SIM card from a standard (Mini SIM) format down to either a Micro SIM (For the NExus 4 etc.) or Nano SIM (for the new iPhone 5). You can also use a pre-configured SIM cutter like the one linked above if you're uncomfortable cutting your own SIM card using scissors. So I bought a 3.8" phone several years ago, which used a mini-SIM. Then I bought a 4.7" phone, and that used a micro-SIM. Now I have a 5.96" phone coming soon, and it needs an even smaller nano-SIM.
What's going on? Who keeps wanting to put smaller and smaller SIMs into phones that just get bigger and bigger? In a couple of years, am I going to buy a phone so big that I have to store it in a backpack, and they'll tell me I have to get a new atom-SIM the size of a needlepoint?

my theory is that one of the reasons why sims are getting smaller and smaller is to enable the phone manufacturers to accomodate more other fancy components to the smart phones. ie. the nano-sim enables extra space for more and more tiny electronic components to be added on the phone device.
Fal Teot i don't want to agree with you. Whether its nano or micro sim, the space accommodate in the mobile is just the same. Look at the tray for nano sim....they are as big as mini sim. For me it doesn't make any sense. The company is just doing something different so that the consumers will have something to talk about. They are all part of marketing mix strategy.
Richard Smithson I agreed with Richard, Why make it smaller when the cellphones need smaller trays and sliders to insert the cards and moreover the sims always come in the default credit-card size holders. Then you get cellphones that take only one type of sim card.
Holy crap! Thanks for the insight. Maybe the reason why the sim cards are getting smaller is because of the need of space for the new features. Since the older ones doesn't have much features in it that's why they don't require smaller sim. That's just my opinion I don't really know the reason behind it. But it seems like people are enjoying bigger screens, it's kind of like the "new thing".

Worked for me! Here's a tip: cut the card slightly too large, check it, and sand the edges with 80 grit sandpaper until it fits

Why would you need to do this? Any half decent company will swap your sim for free in 2 minutes, all you have to do is ask.
nope, most if not all US, CA companies charge you for a new sim card, cutting costs money too. I've experienced this first hand with multiple carriers

Duh, since we don't have a car, and can't drive to get one, and we already have the phone and the old sim card,it is faster to get service to cut the card down and insert it into the phone. Duh duh duh!

Sitting here in 2021, and looking back, I would not have trusted myself to cut up a SIM card, but I still done it anyways, so much easier to just pop it out of the card today

Raeed harun Because when the phone keeps getting smaller and smaller, you need as much space as possible for the electronics, so whatever you can reduce in size, has to be reduced in size. The plastic around the sim is completely unnecessary...
Can phone companies provide nano sim for the same phone number for which you had a micro sim? That would save the hassle of all cutting & grinding trial & error shit.
My phone company have sims that are regular, micro and nano all in 1.. just pull it out of the plastic and done..
To actually have SIM cards nowadays is the real problem. Modern phones could easily do without SIM cards alltogther. It would safe space and ressources and you just use a username and password to log into your mobile carrier.

This was surprising simple. I spent way too much time searching round the house for sand paper, tape etc and in the end it was really easy with just the scissors. Worked first time with no sanding. Cheers!

Fun little tutorial. I came to learn that i cut my sim card far too much, so the extra tape helped me out in making my simcard still stick and be useable. Worked flawlessly.

i don't know what kind of cut you mean but when i got my first sim card it was in the full size sim card adapter thing and my dumb and useless and french fry and chips feasting sister wanted to cut the telia logo out of the full sized sim card adapter so she ruined the sim card adapter without my permission

These instructions were clear and accurate. I followed them and successfully cut down a mini SIM to a nano SIM in a few minutes. I used 180 grit sandpaper to decrease the thickness of the SIM. It was also helpful in doing final adjustment to the width. In the end the new nano SIM fit in the carriage perfectly in all three dimensions. It wasn't as hard as I'd thought. Thanks for the great instructions!

I just used *Norton SandWet Waterproof Super Fine 400 Grit* sandpaper to make my microSIM a nanoSIM. Very quick and painless and I daresay more precise than cutting. This SIM has followed me from phone to phone since it was a regular sized SIM in 2012!

Yes, the author should have mentioned the grade of sandpaper and the importance of cutting the corner piece.
With any other product than "Norton SandWet Waterproof Super Fine" it wouldn't have worked at all, that's for sure. Essentially vital information right there!

It doesn't matter if you cut the gold part cause the chip is actually in the middle.

Thanks just needed to know this would work. For anyone afraid of messing up, I did it by eye since i had a old micro sim and my printer didn't have ink. My sim card looks janky but it works. Just undercut and sand down.

yeah i got a iphone 5s today, and i have the same problem. But u can order it instead its much safier + the guarantee on the phone wont be able if you do something wrong and the phone gets damaged. So i would recommend go to a shop and let them use their tools or order a nano sim card for only 2-5 dollar
thank you for the tip, i really dont know anything about iphone's doe before the iphone i had a LG 4XHD which was the worst phone on the whole planet. It worked in like 5-6 weeks and then the battery runs out faster, the phone gets slower i mean i had my lg 4xhd for 1 year and it very slow and my dad have a iphone 4s and its still working just fine. And for sure it maybe got some good android phone's on the market like Samsung Galaxy but i mean the lg was pretty expensive and worked in like some weeks

Before you start stressing out you damage your card by cutting it, look closer at it -- there is a chance your card is already precut and all it takes is break out the micro sim card out of your mini sim leaving mini adapter effectively. I was relieved I don't have to do anything complex/risky :-).
I cut it with a chainsaw.
Some people will tell you that using a chisel is the best tool for the job. I say, grow a pair and be a man *pours whiskey* *lights cigar*
First you need your micro sim card.
Then, you need a table.
Then, you need this, *pulls starter chord on chainsaw, Brrrrrrrrprpprpprrrr Brrrrrrrprpprrprr*
Then, you take a drink of your whiskey.
Then, *proceeds to cut sim card up into oblivion*
*sits down, chomping on cigar, with a freshly poured whiskey, and picks up landline phone*
And that's how a real man cuts his sim card.
