    I like to give the ladies in my family something special for Christmas that is homemade. Last year, it was vanilla. I’m going to make these beeswax wraps this year. It really looks so easy! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

    Also make my own. Tried all 3 methods. Ironing is cleanest and easiest. I use fairly raw beeswax from a local farm so there is still a bit of honey in it. This is perfect to give it a bit of stickyness.

      since your wax still has honey, do you still use resin? I have wax from when I used to keep bees and extracted honey - I saved the caps and would melt it out for keeping wax for wraps, lip balm, etc - but never got around to doing all the things. Excited to finally make things for presents this year.

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, you can definitely use cotton fabric (make sure to wash before). I used linen because I love it, I have a lot, it's a sturdier fabric than cotton and gets sprayed less with pesticides, and it's naturally anti-bacterial 💜

    Hi Anja! I made a few wraps, but we aren’t crazy about the pine rosin smell and fear it may be absorbed by foods. What is your experience?
    I used it once to cover my sourdough starter (Stella😉) after feeding and she did not seem to respond as she normally has. I would love to know what your thoughts are.
    And thank you! For sharing your recipe. 😊

    • @OurGabledHome

      A lot of people make the beeswax wraps only with beeswax. Pine resin seems to be fine to come in touch with food and the EWG gives it a green "1" rating. I use them for my SD starters all the time and haven't noticed any adverse effects. So ultimately it's up to you and personal preference. Hope this helps 😊 ~ Anja

    The method I use is to get a cotton or linen pillow case, sprinkle the beeswax pellets over it, roll it and fold it up and stick it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. You have to check it now and again to see that it is not getting too hot (ie smoking) but this is by far the quickest and least messy way in my experience.

      I have to stress the importance of careful supervision for this microwave method, and that the turntable is revolving properly. It gets extremely hot inside the rolled-up fabric and you can finish up with burn spots and a ruined project. There is quite a narrow window between the heat required to melt the beeswax and setting the whole thing on fire.@@OurGabledHome

      I find jojoba oil best for these beeswax wraps but you could use canola oil or olive oil (if you don't mind the scent). Hope this helps 😊 ~ Anja

    Could I use aluminum foil or maybe a silicone baking liner to go on top of the beeswax instead of parchment? My son has a parchment paper allergy and I don’t have it in the house.

      If it's not sticky enough you can try adding more resin and a bit more beeswax.

    Very nice video, beautifully done, but the methods shown are not for me. They look too time-consuming. I'm going to look for a method where you start with a ready solution of beeswax, raisin, and oil (but something a bit less pricey than jojoba oil, like linseed oil or rapeseed oil) and immerse the fabric in one way or another.
    What I do like with your method, though, is that it seems very neat (no big messes), economic (not a lot of waste), and precise.

    Most cloths at this point are partly or even mostly synthetic, they can't be composted. You can only compost it if it's 100% cotton. Otherwise, great video!
