    From gov.uk: You were born outside the UK
    British citizenship is normally automatically passed down one generation to children born outside the UK.
    For example, you might automatically become a citizen if you’re born outside the UK to a British parent. But your children will not automatically be citizens if they’re born outside the UK.

    Her mother is Scottish, so all she had to do was apply.

    • @BucyKalman
      @BucyKalman ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not exactly. If you were born before 1983, you could get British citizenship by descent from your father, but not from your mother. If your mother were British, it was necessary to apply for British citizen by registration.
      I am pretty sure Juliane Moore was born before 1983.

      The Life in the UK test (which I have taken) is more of a pub quiz, asking anything from names of famous athletes and scientists going back decades to something about how the amount of money involved in a court case changes which court tries the case in Scotland (a question I got and got wrong), as well as expected questions on history and civics. Fortunately, I cram well.

    I might be out of date but the 1981 Act allowed for anyone to claim British citizenship as of right on a hereditary basis for one generation, through either parent but only if born after that.
    For older people, the former standard applied- hereditary one generation but through father only.
    If you met the age-appropriate standard, it was more a matter of them recognizing you already were a British citizen and recording you as such, rather than making you a new one. You had to provide all sorts of documentation- birth certificate, British-born parent's birth record, parents' marriage certificate, and perhaps others. But no test.
    But she's too old for mother to count. Born 1960. She'd have had to have a British born father. Unless that has been changed since- but the goal of British nationality law had long been to reduce the scope for people claiming freebies, not expand it.

    • @SwiftFoxProductions
      @SwiftFoxProductions ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're actually misunderstanding the rules a little bit. You are correct that since she was born in 1960, she was not automatically a British citizen as it was her mother who was British and not her father. However...her mother being British still made her ELIGIBLE to apply for citizenship. And the process really is as simple as she describes. As the daughter of a British mother, she merely had to fill out an application with documentation of her ancestry, get it approved, and attend/pay for a citizenship ceremony. If her father had been British, she wouldn't have even had to do any of that! In that situation, since you're already a citizen, you can just go ahead and apply for a UK passport! But, in either situation, no test is required.

    So...wait....let me see if I got this right. 2 people come over from Britain to the US and throw a party, and the only way you can get into this party, in the US, is if you are a British citizen because if your just a US citizen you can't go to this party that's in the US. I feel like that's the biggest F U to the US and her citizens. I mean, seriously, WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F#&K?!

      Considering the U.S. has 9 U.S. military bases in the UK let’s let them have a little party 😂

      The party was in the British embassy, and since embassies are considered sovereign soil the party was technically not in the US.
