  • This is a preview from Railfanning the Upper Great Lakes Volume 1 of hi-nose Alco C628's on the Chicago & Northwestern. The production covers the trip by Ken Bealer of Allentown to the upper great lakes area in 1983. Featured is the DM&IR, Hi-nose Alco C628's on the Chicago & Northwestern and Alco's last stand on the Green Bay & Western.

    I worked for the C&NW when we recieved the N%W c628, we had a couple main generator explosions because they were full of coal dust, they were somewhat limited because they were over 400000 lbs

      Interesting...
      I thought Alco went to a central filtered air intake with the Century series to avoid just such a problem?😕

    The horn at 1:21 is awesome, it sounds like a whistle and then a horn.

      When the other bells are seized and gacked up with oil, the air is channeled to the other bells, causing them to overblow or squeal.

    I'm stunned not one of these were saved and the funny thing is, they were one of the few remaining C628s left operating in the US when they retired in 1986. With that said, they look great, despite the bad horn.

      It is extremely fouled from that traditional Alco smoke.

    The Alco High Hood C628's were originally N&W.Purchased in 1973 & operated until their ending in 1986.After that,They were replaced by SD60's,SD40-2's,SD45's (Secondhand only since the ones on the C&NW Roster do not have Dynamic Brakes)

    I hail from Escanaba,Michigan.I recall seeing those in town all the time.They ran in sets on the Ore runs,also freights to Green Bay or Iron Mountain.

    Awesome! Beautiful color video! I believe the truss bridge in Stephenson in still there. There are several on that stretch between Powers and Menominee.

    Awesome video! I see HO scale models of these locomotives pop up on Ebay, although I elected to get a D&H unit myself, mainly because it was more affordable than the C&NW versions.

    Great video! I have railfaned the upper great lakes and taken video's near Wilson and Powers Michigan. It was nice to see those classic locomotive's working the same line's that I watch CN train's working now. Well done! Rich

      I recently rail fanned in Little Lake and Marquette, Michigan myself. I’m happy to say that the LS&I Marquette Ore Dock is still going strong!! I’m sad to say, that the Escanaba Ore Dock is not in operation. Happily, trains still go through Little Lake. It takes major determination to find one, though. With luck and determination, I saw one this Summer.

    Thank you for the wonderful video! When I was a toddler in Little Lake, Michigan, I saw C&NW Iron Ore trains everyday. That was in the mid to late 1970s. Anytime I see such videos, I think of Little Lake. Some of you might know that already.

    I worked for the C&NW at cedarlake shop MN massive locomotive, yes great horn, over 400,000 lbs, all the alco switch engines and C628 made alot of smoke

    As I was watching, I was thinking the exact same thing that Caesar K Rock was....it's a shame that some of those units weren't saved! By the mid-80's railfans knew the Alco C628 was a seriously endangered species. Anyway, we were lucky some folks got out there and shot some nice video of them in action, along with that string of brand new Rio Grande hopper cars too!

    The horn is a RS3L you can tell by listening to the undercurrent sound similar to the ones found on the cnw sd40-2's

      It sounds more like a very fouled RS5T rather than an RS3L.

      These units were produced in the 60's so they most likely have S5T's

    All NW engines were dual controlled. I guess C&NW took the second control stand out when they bought them.

      I was having a major meltdown over this, as most or all the video's I've seen show these running short hood fwd - yet the Bowser HO model has the F marking long hood fwd, as is shown in some actual photos:

      Funny that CNW retained the N&W marking if they were dual controlled - especially if they removed the other control stand to only operate SHF!

      Yeah I'll bet! I'm on L.I. and have read that the engineers used to complain about the C420's long hood swaying on the tracks - must've been pure hell in a 628! 😂

      @@openeyes-411 I don't think they swayed with those tri-mounts. I use to be an engineer on the Joint LIne, Denver-Pueblo and use to operate the old U25/28C's. On those you felt every joint in the jointed rail!

      Maybe there's more crew members on board than the number of seats in the lead unit. Some railroads began removing cabooses before they started reducing the number of crew members on the train.

    At 122 hit pause. Close your eyes and imagine that Miss Ellie just got told JR got shot. Then press play. The horn "two tone" sounds like mood music for a crappy tv soap opera. hahaha. Handsome high hood units though.

      Train was headed to Green Bay, WI from Escanaba, MI. I would have to check my notes, but I believe it was an empty ore train
