Nice to see that Dave has the objectively correct opinion that stocks and cash should be played open. He also makes a pile of five stocks and turns them perpendicular to his other shares! A gentleman and a scholar.
What an awesome channel! I bought this game with NO idea how to play. Watched your entire 2 hour video and played right along with you! It’s wonderful that you do “play throughs” because that’s the easiest way for most to learn (as opposed to reading instructions out of a booklet). Keep up the great work!
I love that you showed all those older versions. I remember the 90's version for sure. For the first time ever, i think you have a game that looks like a decent production in each iteration. Like you said, you'd be happy with any version. So many other games that have been reproduced over the years, most of the time there are horrible produced versions you'd be glad to get rid of.
Thanks again for an excellent play through. Very enjoyable. And thank you Dave for explaining the rules very clearly. Always a delight to watch your content.
I've really enjoyed these company investing/strategy games! (Big Boss last week and now this one) It's amazing how they are relatively straight forward in terms of play, but is quite thinky and surprisingly tense as the game goes on. Really fun to watch the playthroughs! :)
Definitely a Thumbs Up for this one guys, fantastic video! Acquire is one of my all time favourite games, and I'm the proud owner of a 1999 AH copy, considered the best by some. I only bring it out on very special occasions, like let's say... if King Charles wanted to play, otherwise people will just have to do with my old and battered 3M Bookshelf copy that I picked up secondhand years ago. It's really great to see you guys playing older games - albeit in a modern reincarnation - because some of them are really excellent games that people know nothing about. Indeed me and some of my games playing friends have often said if we had the resources and skills to make videos of a quality as good as you, we'd do a channel showing only vintage games being played. I'd really love to see you give Hare & Tortoise by David Parlett the GameNight! treatment, another of my very favourite games. Absolutely brilliant video, really, really enjoyed this one, I'm now about to walk away from my computer with a huge smile on my face, and it's all because of you, thanks guys! 👍😁
When Lincoln founded Continental, he got his free stock, but then he bought an additional one with two stocks of Tower...he didn't grab that 2nd Continental stock, so he shorted himself one stock. hahaha. Well...on the other hand, at the 30 minute mark, Lincoln started the last hotel (American, the dark blue one)...he got his free one, put it in his stack, then bought another one, which he first put on the stack, then moved it off so it wouldn't be confusing...after that, he bought two more Sackson ...this is where it gets funny, he picked up the two red stocks and another American and put them in the stacks, forgetting he had already set aside his American purchase...later when straightening up his play area, he placed that American stock back on his stack, so on that turn he actually got 3 stocks of American and 2 stocks of Sackson. So he shorted himself one stock of Continental, but gifted himself a free stock of American...not sure how either move effected future moves, but I do find it funny that one accident cost him one and another accident got him one basically nullifying the first error. What a wheeler and dealer!
Great video, as usual! Thank you for sharing! 🙂 I wonder why Sid Sackson games like «Acquire» or «Can't Stop» have their best editions in 1999 and 1980 respectively, and I don´t understand why publishers have not continued with those good game designs, since all the new editions have not managed to surpass those old ones. I suppose it will be due to actual problems of production costs, retail price and so on... This 2023 edition is OK, of course, but I prefer 1999 one.
This game still holds up really well, and usually gets at least one play a year when I visit family. Lincoln: Have you actually been to the Seattle Pinball Museum? It's cool isn't it?
Yes of course. Majority and minority sharholder's bonus are paid out for all active company's in the end scoring. Otherwise it's no use to buy or change 2/1 stocks in the later parts of the game. Dave is not right when he say that it is only for megers. it's not!
@@TheHumanworkAlso, if the bonuses were only for mergers and not for end-of-game scoring, then there would be no point in listing bonuses for corporations larger than 10 tiles. After all, a corporation at 11 or more is safe and can never close due to merger.
What a great game never seen this, I don't really like monopoly this is sort of of that ilk business game but seems to complete quickly. I was sure Mike was winning so a real surprise for me at the end. I like the way you play open and friendly.
Dave, during the rules explanation you mentioned that the shareholder bonuses are only for mergers but you seem to pay them out at the end of the game before letting everyone sell their shares?
Yeah, it had been a while since I'd played and I'd forgotten they also pay out at the end, too. I think the games I'm most likely to miss something when teaching are the old classic games that I know cold :)
Thanks for taking the time to clarify, in any case this has gone on my wish-list as I do conveniently fall into the category that you guys mentioned where no one I knew had this when I was young!
I couldn't figure out how to edit my last comment. Realize that there is no reason to list shareholder bonuses above 11 unless they would pay out sometime. I am pretty sure you got that rule wrong.
Both. I'm not sure how long this first English version (in almost 30 years!) of Big Boss will be around since Funko Games was sold. It's also cheap right now so I'd grab it. Acquire is great and different so it's worth getting.but maybe not immediately since there are many copies and versions around. Probably not the answer you wanted but I truly love them both. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln
is this game essentially a precursor/successor to big boss (which you played in the previous episode)? the rules of this game feel like they are almost exactly the same as big boss this gave me major deja vu during the rules explanation
@@bhbnnc nice! Not sure how much of a fan I am of these types of games just yet but def excited to try and possibly pick up the rich and the good at some point. That's one I've been waiting for it to go on sale. ☺️
The discussion at the end was amazing.

Fun game. It's been around for a long time, yet I'd never heard of it. Thank you for the great teach and enjoyable playthrough!

It mattered a bit later when Dave wanted to merge American and was shocked to see Lincoln had one more share than expected
Always watch the banker! We try to catch each other, but we are playing for fun :)
15:41 that is a new rule too. Previously bonuses were paid also at the end of the game.
I was surprised when I saw that, but I think Dave just forgot to mention it. At the end of the game they did pay out the bonuses.
Very good game. Thanks for the video
This is a great game. I have a 3M version from 1968 and it’s a fun play with my gaming group.
41:30 Nikki should have bought shares before Lincon started his turn.
Super fun episode 😇 Looks like a fun and interesting game 😀 Also - Love Nikkis' shirt 🥰 Game Night rules 🥰
Any chance we'll ever get a playthrough of Power Grid?
I can just imagine the auction round with the 4 of you!!
Acquire is played in business schools, usually to teach/practice strategic management skills
Great video! Tempter to pick up a copy
Please take a replacement tile. Need that on a t-shirt.

I was happy to pick this version up, but those little flags on the building keep falling off! Gotta take some time to glue them.
Those flags might be for indicating the value category (1, 2 or 3 flags)?
Cheer~~buy or obtain (an asset or object) for oneself.

Yeah, we corrected that at the end.
I’ve only just gotten through the teach, but is ‘absorb’ the word Dave is looking for?
I believe it is 'Absorb' but I also think 'Assimilated' is coming into use as well 😇
players should cannibalize an old Scrabble game so the players can use the trays to hold their tiles.

Any recommendations on such a bag (Amazon etc.)?
If you or any of friends are drinkers, that gorgeous purple cloth bag that Crown Royal comes in is perfect for games repurposing :)
Was about to recommend Crown Royal myself😁 Sometimes you can find em at game stores or even Goodwill stores😇 @@davidarnott4850
You should have used Scrabble time holders to hold your tiles.
Can we get a moonraker expansion. Or thing outpost
Trying to sneak that 'build chain, get stocks' double header past us huh.

thank you for the reply, Lincoln. big boss now, acquire later. got it. 🙏😊 it's always fun watching you guys having fun.
do those card trays come with this edition of Acquire?
The game trays are from Gamegenic!
It doesn't; the bag & the card sleeves don't either.
is this game essentially a precursor/successor to big boss (which you played in the previous episode)?
the rules of this game feel like they are almost exactly the same as big boss

@@boardgamegeek ahhh that explains the similarities thanks =)
This version is comparable to acquire version 1999 edition.
So this or big boss ??? (You can only choose 1)

@@bhbnnc I've def heard good things about that game as well! There are simply just too many games 😂.
My version is from 1976
You definately errored when you were detailing the rules. At end game, the stockholder's bonuses are paid out.
But we did pay them out at the end.
Yeah. Nothing has the potential to trip me up more than an old classic game I've played a million times before - sheesh.
Shark - is another financial board game that I find more cutthroat.
I agree with Dave and I think big boss has some more modern mechanics and better game play than this one.
