They did their yearly camp fest one year about 20 miles northwest of Steamboat Springs, CO,
They did so much environmental damage to the up to 2 weeks to a month long camping fest in the forest and meadow areas they stayed at, that the National Forest Dept said it would take up to 10 years for it to come back. And some areas would never regrow what plants were there before them. Yes, new seedlings would regrow new plants, bushes and trees but some would take more then 10 years to do that to be what is was before they came and destroyed it. They also had to be kicked out by forest rangers as well. It was estimated up to 350-400 people were camping all in one mass campsite but close enough to each other to pound the ground to dust.
CO. National Forest rule is can only camp in one site area for up to 2 weeks then must leave that site for a 2nd one at least 3 miles away. After a total of 30 days camping in 2 sites you must leave the forest or grassland. You can come back at a reasonable time later in the summer again to camp. Of course this is with a reasonable amount of those camping in those sites too. These are not in campgrounds either.
I have lived in CO. since 1969 minus 5 years in AZ before coming back and I would go camping in that same forest myself at preexisting camp sites, not destroying anything either.
The meadows had wonderful wild flowers in them.

Stop trying to dictate what people can do. If people want to go into he forest that's their natural born rights. This world is getting pathetic.

I'm not sure you're aware of how large the forest is compared to the amount of space they take up. And it won't take that long to regrow, the forest is far more resilient than that.

@@predictorbibulous3327 I am aware of it. I have camped before the age 60 in CO. WY, MT Even ID and BC and Alberta, Canada well OVER 500 times in my lifetime. 99.8% of that NOT in pay campgrounds but by boondocking in tents.
NOW that we got that straight lets move on!!!
You NEED to reread what FACTS I typed again. The CO. Nat Forrest Service said those things, not me AND they did NOT dispersement camp either or boondocking in smaller groups. Nor did NFS make up the damage the Hippies Fest did to the forest. There were photos of the damage.
So are you saying the NFS are liars.
Just because it shows they camped along the forest road on each side of it in this video doesn't mean they camp that way each time over the decades.
And last the area they camped at was over 8500' in elevation which takes all forms of vegetation to grow slower with longer winters and deeper snow.
Steamboat Springs is not well known for skiing because there is a low amount of snow there.

@@Hoop_23 Rules are rules and have to be followed so others don't ruin it like they always do!!! It showed that when they camped in the forest area I typed about!!!
FYI I DID NOT DICTATE what they should do except for NOT irresponsibly damaging something EVERYONE wants to enjoy but simply stated what the CO NFS said, so get off your high horse.
CO. Nat Forest service said it with actual photos of the irresponsible damage done. I'm all for tent camping as I did A LOT OF it before the age of 60 but there is a reason the NFS doesn't want huge camp groups like that in the forest all in one area and for that length of time of up to a month.
If they had spread out in smaller groups, less damage would of been done!!!
Only thing pathetic is when someone sticks up for a group of people who irresponsibility camped in a certain way in the Routt National Forest back then.

they don't seem like they've hurt anybody or done anything wrong. but people will lick boots and laugh at the hippies anyway because they think that makes them tough or something.

They pollute and damage the environment with these gatherings. When you are dispersed camping, you are meant to stay within 150 feet of roadways and only camp at clearly established campsites. You are not meant to just drive a bunch of vehicles into the woods and create your own impromptu campgrounds.
People like this are what give the overlanding community a bad name, because they don't actually respect the environment when on public lands. Even if they actually have people that stay behind to pick up all the litter they can find, the damage to that whole area of woods has already been done.

@@edmundooliver7584 If they would have actually followed dispersed camping regulations, then they wouldn't have needed permits or anything. Dispersed camping on public lands is free(assuming you aren't in a park or the park allows it in certain areas) and requires no permits or reservations.
It's rolling into the woods with dozens of cars to set up an impromptu campground wherever you please that is illegal.
