he 12th Annual Linares Super Tournament held from February 23rd to March 14th, 1994 was the first Category XVIII event ever held. Fourteen of the world's best players, including both World Champions, competed in a round robin format. The participants were (in order of Elo): Garry Kasparov (2805), Anatoli Karpov (2740), Alexey Shirov (2715), Vishwanathan Anand (2715), Vladimir Kramnik (2710), Vassily Ivanchuk (2710), Gata Kamsky (2695), Boris Gelfand (2685), Evgeny Bareev (2685), Alexander Beliavsky (2650), Veselin Topalov (2640), Judit Polgar (2630), Joel Lautier (2625), and Miguel Illescas-Cordoba (2590). When asked about the strength of the tournament, Kasparov famously stated that the winner could consider himself the world champion of tournament chess. Ironically, it was to be Karpov, his longtime rival, who would be the man of destiny, culminating in the greatest single tournament performance of all time! Karpov won the whole ball of wax, undefeated with an astonishing 11/13!!

Kasparov did a very clear "take back" in a game against Nakamura. Nakamura reacted to it in one of his videos and he said that he didn't object because the game wasn't going to decide the tournament and Kasparov was doing the tournament post-retirement, so Naka was like, whatever.
So he just handled it like Kasparov going senile 😂
He literally didnt care
What is Kasparov is just an average chess player but keeps getting away with takebacks?
@@ButlersTraining Lol Hikaru never cares! 😂
There's actually a fun rule at a chess club I go to some times, for every 100 points one player has above another, the weaker player gets one takeback. So a 1400 player would get 4 takebacks against an 1800 player. It's an interesting way of giving odds.
That's actually a pretty cool rule
Takebacks shouldnt be part of the game how else will you learn from your mistakes
@@nickpeitchev7763 yes
is it after the next move?
I think that's great how else are you going to get people to play more chess.
In a recent interview Polgar says:
I was not aware the case was being recorded. Realistically without camera they would have never given me the truth. At the age of 17 if I accuse the grand champion, what would that have looked like? I only got an invitation because of my talent and to add diversity to the competition and that’s how I want to win against Kasparov? And if they don’t give me the truth, I’ll be blacklisted because of the means I wanted to get ahead.
At the same time, he felt something was wrong, he didn’t know what to do with the situation, he was fighting a big fight with himself. Did I really let go of that? On the other hand, he wanted to convince himself that if no one spoke, he has not done anything wrong. It was a serious mistake and that move could have led to a loss, but it was corrected. At the end of the competition, I asked him: did you accidentally release the piece? He judged this by humiliating me in front of others and ignored me for years. Around 1997 the relationship became normal again when we met in an elevator and discussed everything. The case was greatly inflated by the media, Kasparov's big rival, Anatoly Karpov's staff too. It ruined the competition for both of us. Karpov cleared the field, achieving one of the greatest victories of his life. For me, it has become the strangest story of my life. Even now I could not whole heartedly recommend a 17-year-old to hold a world champion accountable.

That is not her job; the people running the tournament need to make sure that the rules are enforced. An honourable opponent would have admitted what he had done whether it started as an accident or not.
thanks for sharing. sad.
Poor woman.
Kasparov is a sh@t for that incident. The fact that not only did he make the mistake, he wasn't honorable to admit it, then bismirches her reputation after... to me that's unforgivable. Also that Judith had to keep quiet to maintain her chess career.... what an AH he is.
Not that Kasparov isn't an oily SOB for the whole thing, but only in the shadow of Kasparov's media presence in the west could the takeaway be "even though he removed his hand, and then humiliated me and blacklisted me afterwards, the whole things was Karpov's fault when you really look at it".
2nd: During one tournament game against Judit Polgar, Kasparov made his move and seemed to take his hand away from the piece for a split second. He then moved the piece to another square. The shocked Polgar didn’t make a claim but later indicated that she thought the champion had indeed taken his hand off of the piece. Kasparov denied doing so. However, the game was videotaped, and a careful review of the tape showed that Kasparov did in fact let go of the piece. Unfortunately, chess doesn’t have instant replays, and no protest was possible after the game was over. If even world champions break the rules, what hope do the rest of us have?
- American FM James Eade
Such a great pleasure to see Ms. Polgar. She is definitely a top chess player. Great show, thanks for sharing it.
I've seen the video, and he CLEARLY lets go of the piece, then grabs it again and moves it somewhere else. If you move a piece and let go of it for even a fraction of a second, THAT'S YOUR MOVE, end of story. To do what he did is cheating which means he automatically loses, OR has to leave it where he put it. He knew what he was doing, and that what he did was wrong.
It seems the link to the video no longer works. "Very strange..."

Thank you for sharing this game!I remember this was in the papers those days..no internet, but inexplicably no move notation in 'The Guardian'(UK).At that time Judith was a rising star&to me it felt like Kasparov was anxious about the possibility of conceding a point to her. I stopped liking Kasparov after this because in my mind, the manly thing to do,especially as World Champion,is to resign despite not being in a losing position. In this way he'd retain dignity because how do you play on sensing your conduct has affected your opponent?
It is telling that footage is unavailable. This goes to the heart of the price paid for incorrect conduct: Now nobody is able witness (t)his smallness, yet in being unavailable,it is added to.
Judith was only 17 then and with the adjudicator being present&this being her 1st major tournament, one can only imagine the effect this incident had on her game.

Incident is around 13:50 very clear and blatant, the look on Judits face spoke 1000 words, It was almost as if she knew everyone must have seen it and realised nothing would be done anyway.
I would have flipped the board and shoved his knight where the sun don't shine.
@@spindoctor6385 You'd have certainly called the adjudicator..
@@andersonarmstrong2650 Haha yeah.. maybe i do not have the right temperament for international chess..
I really feel bad for poor Judit aged 16, probably admiring Kasparov, and Kasparov completely spoiling her (at the moment) most important tournament ever, behaving like the worse a*****e ever. Plus it's not the only time he did this. You know none of us is perfect. He just should admit the fault when it's recorded, instead of hiding it by all means available, we all do mistakes and even big mistakes that show our very weakness, you know when a person is a real human not as how few he felt down, but how often he went back on his feet rightfully. No one is always strong and perfect. But some admit their imperfection, are sorry and try to do better next time, and others don't want to change at all, have absolutely no compassion for a younger player (???WTFIGWWH???) and pay other to hide their mistake in order to look perfect. It's really sad, mainly for them, and especially when they are world champ. That really doesn't help to get our sympathy back. The good end through, is that Judit beat him many times after that and even became renown particularly because of her spectacular wins against Kasparov. Not al the time, but sometimes... sometimes there is some justice out there and then we all enjoy. And how indeed we enjoy Judit's games and fantastic style and unique talent.

I'm gkad I saw the footage before it got.. 'corrupted'.
Kas[arov indeed moved his hand from the peice. ANd she reacted instantly, though I'd say her first expression was one of shock/disbelief.
This is one of the things that shows Kasparav is not honorable. I remember a game where I was beating someone rated 300 points below me and I touched my king and then realized it was mate if I moved my king. My opponent didn't know I touched my king because he wasn't at the table.
I didn't even think about moving another piece. That's the rules. I'd have no sooner moved another piece that I would have tried to move a knight up 2 and over 2.
You're lowkey an idiot
He didn't know you touched your king, and you only touched it
If I'm playing online and i hover my queen over a square to help see what it looks like, am I obligated to place it there?

It appears to me that Kasparov got more negative publicity than if he had lost the game. At the same time many people felt sorry for Judith (fairly and correctly) since they saw what happened hence she got more positive publicity than if she had won the game. I guess it was not Kasparov that moved the Knight it was Maradona’s hands of god.

So, K's argument is that the move didn't bother him because he could have drawn?? That is ridiculous since he ended up winning. K is a tool. I saw the original footage and he did indeed take his hands off the piece. This is a travesty.
What he meant is that they would have force him to play Kc5 and it would have been a draw. Judith fanboys were saying this was winning for her

The video has been removed from this posting as well. WTF?! Who is responsible? World Chess is still a shady, disreputable business.
No one is above the rules and this just shows even legendary chess players sometimes, perhaps unintentionally, "cheat." Judit should have stopped the clock and called an arbiter and she would have gotten justice.
What happened next?
She said at the time a 17 yr girl doesn't challenge the world champion, cause if she did, she would've been blacklisted. I think she thought Garry would deny it, and then the repressions would've fell on her.
Me when playing chess:
"Uh, those last 12 moves I made were actually just j'adoube. "

Kasparov couldn't let a little girl beat the world champion! So he cheated which goes to show he was very afraid of her. The world champion was frightened and took advantage of his position (title) against a newcomer....a little girl newcomer....and cheated. The fact he just can't bring himself to admit his cheating even years later shows what an enormous ego he still has and his lack of character......such a character is akin to an online player using an engine to help him. I have no respect for the man, if one can call him that. Judit, on the other hand, is a total class act.
Just for emphasis, that Kasparov STILL WON'T ADMIT he cheated (and he certainly knew and he certainly even saw the evidence on camera) shows his severe lacking of good character.
He has a serious attitude in another linearis tournament he was beaten by a 16 yr old radjabov and just left without resigning so radjabov had to wait him out later he also said this is a disgrace to chess like the ass he was

You should follow this up with K's loss to Radjabov and mention that K instead of congratulating the 15 year old for beating him, refused to shake hands and ran off the stage looking for his mommy. This is all hearsay of course, can anyone confirm this?
+Testa I confirm this. I was following this game live when it was played :D
Then there was K's game against Carlson when Magnus was 13. First, Kasparov showed up 15 minutes late. Then when K ended the game suddenly with a quick handshake and walked away, Carlson thought he had resigned. So did I. it was officially called a draw, though. Carlson never agreed to a draw. So as far as I'm concerned, Kasparov just resigned.
I don't care how famous a player is, no one should be allowed to do that. He does NOT just get to force a draw on his opponent that way.
Testa Sounds legit, his facial expression after losing to IBM computer was priceless.

I used to root for Kasparov back in the day since the alternative was Karpov which was even worse. But I cannot understand the mindset he had with always being such a douche towards the other top players. Today in contrast every top player seems to be very friendly and respectful towards each other.
There's a nifty novel called Zugzwang. Part of the plot is the introverted personality of the chess master sometimes. www.amazon.com/Zugzwang-Novel-Ronan-Bennett/dp/B0046HAKV2
Thank God the players are now so bland
How is Karpov worse? Kasparov spent years making him out to be the symbol of everything wrong with the Soviet Union, but Karpov was just a chess player. One more personally liked by his contemporaries, and without the deep legacy of d*** moves that marred Kasparov's career. Even as head of the PCA he ran a candidates tournament in 2000 to determine who would face him for the World Championship, then switched the winner for the loser.
Can you imagine how he would have reacted if that had happened to him in 1984? Even the possibility that there were people who *wanted* to do it, which he can't prove, has been one of Kasparov's obsessions for years.

At 13:45 white queen captures e2 is that not sufficient for white to continue the game.. or am I missing anything.. please let me know...
I was wondering the same thing. Seems like the best move to me....?
Qxh2 and Qh1 is checkmate
Out of curiosity I started to look for this video. It was definitely deleted before 2006 when I found first mentions of its lose. But still even if it was removed from English internet from Russian side nothing can disappear so easily. But still I couldn't find it, it might be my fault, because my Russian is poor, but I think everyone who have seen this recording saw it on TV. Or created a fake memory. All I found was mentions from people that "I've seen it before but can't find it now." In newspapers from 2002 when Polgar won against Kasparov, most of them mentioned that cameras caught Kasparov drop piece but never actually linking video. So I think that some of people saw this on TV, probably including you, or combined few pictures related both to her and Kasparov and connected them in one. Because this video was definitely deleted(?) before youtube was born. This still might be on Russian parts of internet but my lack of language skills gave so low results.
Kuba (też z Polski?) i was looking for it and finally found it: Download a copy of the footage to your hard drive (or ssd) www.youtubepp.com/watch?v=oADSFgvs5L4
Nxf6 was Judit's mistake, trading pieces from there gives the advantage to Kasparov.
I have a question. Im new to this channel and wondered why that dude is in the top right corner every video. So I found out its Michael Tal after watching the top 10 Tal facts. But why is he there? Is he your favourite player?
It is Mikhail Tal. His favorite player. Many people like his style because he is considered the best attacked of all time.
TheNPGuy thank you :)
TheNPGuy *best attacker, sorry to be that guy but it changes the whole meaning of the sentence
1OO1O11O11O1O yes it it was a typo on my iPhone. Thanks for correcting
This episode IS on TH-cam!! With comments turned off, a Spanish tv news broadcasting excerpt!
And in this regard Agad should consider giving us a game where Judit crush Garry squarely,
It’s interesting that the video in the link has now been removed.

I saw the footage on youtube a couple of days ago. Judit the poor girl was so cute as she made a stolen move to look aside in order to check there was anybody else who saw this.
Where is the video of the original fotage
#agadmator Can you make a analysis video on the draw game between IM Yeoh Li Tian and GM Viswanathan Anand in the Chess World Cup 2017?
I dunno what to think about Kasparow. Once he shows his absolute genious and the other time he shows his cheating, pretensious side
Its the approach of a world champion - you cannot allow a thought that you could lose, Magnus behaves the same way and unfortunatelly its the correct approach :( - but we like and get inspired by Polgar, Svidler, Nakamura Ivanchucky and Tal - btw - the video can be downloaded from youtube with some downloader script/site as it has been found again: www.youtubepp.com/watch?v=oADSFgvs5L4
This is the only example I have ever heard of Kasparov doing such a thing. It is possible that he didn't realize that he'd done it or maybe he just couldn't accept the idea of losing to Judit. No one is perfect. If he did it on purpose it is a terrible thing but it does not take away from his extraordinary career. We all have made mistakes in our life, many of which are a lot worse than cheating on a move in chess.
He did the same against Nakamura.
7:39 if queen takes, bishop takes rook
He had to be a winner, He was Kasparov and today also is. We must accept this fact. He was a world champion then, in 1994. He couldn't accept a lost chess match against some young girl.
What an idiotic opinion
No one at any level should offer or receive take backs. Part of the ethos of chess is that you're supposed to foresee the consequences of your moves. How can you learn the game if you're always getting take backs.
Garry Kasparov dropped the piece.
You dropped it, you leave it.
How come the video of the incident is blocked ?! Don’t have any restrictions on my account... or so I thought
that video in description isn't available now.

Kasparov was a great chess player maybe greatest but in terms of sportsmanship he isn't an idol. He did many questionable things in his reign. Like passing disrespectful remarks after losing or even once he deliberately left match in between without resign so his must wait till clock run out.
12:56 And in the actual game after King to H7 I think that Queen to D1 is the best move.
Then Nf2 ,
Lol no
I know Tal Bar-On I played a simultaneous game with him
I'm curious about the alternate line shown at 10:19 of the video, but I don't have a set with me so I'll ask. What happens if Polgar played Nf3 at that point? (Sorry; I had the wrong timestamp in my original message, so I fixed it.)
I think Kasparov would play Qf2, Polgar would play Rd2, and Polgar's knight ends up at d2 after an exchange of rooks and an exchange of queens. But does anyone see a better line for either side?
9:54 In the 1994 touch move incident Garry Kasparov vs Judit Polgar, I found an alternative line for an 8-move equality puzzle that goes to endgame and doesn't involve a repetition/perpetual, like the 1st line agadmator presented but is similar to the 2nd line. (Double 9LX castling is also irrelevant!)

During one tournament game against Judit Polgar, Kasparov made his move and seemed to take his hand away from the piece for a split second.

I hope the game delcare a lost for him fide should do something about it cause the evidence it's out there!!!!
Also he should get punishment of banning out of cheating and denying.
Can you do some Mir Sultan Khan please? He is both the cinderella and the Ramanujan of chess. His underdog story and his unique style which formed outside of Western chess culture are fascinating.
+Warren Huffman I did one video on him. His victory over Capablanca. You can check that one out until I do some more
Thank you :)
From what I heard the video was never published at the request of the sponsor of the tournament.
I’m sorry, but why can’t Qxe2 be played at 13:43? I must be missing something. If that is played, Qh2 is followed by Kf1 and white is temporarily out of danger
I think Qh1 is mate from that position, no?
Aaron B that’s right! I missed that. Thank you
tied to watch video but was unable
the message said it was private
10:40 the king can escape I think
Hey did ivanchuk n aronian plyd tdy? Round 5 game 2
+Ajay Terdalkar Yes. It was a draw
agadmator's Chess Channel ohh 😅aronian is deserving fr the world champnshp against magnus.. bt i wnt ivanchuk to win .. i feel ivanchuk deservs WINNING the world title ✌hpe fr the bst
So nw is ivanchuk out ?
At 12:00, Judit could to move rook to e5, if rook capturing to e5, so queen capturing to e5... Thats position is much better for white because if put bishop to d5, the black is in trouble.
I'm on the road and can't analyze in depth, but 1 Rxe5 Rxb2 with the threat of 2...Qxd1+ and mate is unstoppable after that capture
Video of the incident is labeled as private video and not possible to watch anymore
The match between Bobby vs Spassky in 1972 which was created new history in chess can you try to upload that match. Thank you
+D Praveen The entire match? That's a lot of games :D
agadmator's Chess Channel you did it eventually haha
13:46 or Q*e2 and she has a rook against a knight
But world champion would likely not miss mate in 2
The video of the incident is ‘private,’ can we get a working link?
I JUST watched the actual video footage like 2 mins ago
