Haruna is a drummer whose playing is not only fast and powerful, but also effective and stable. In fact, she can play for more than 2 hours without looking tired or sweaty.
Haruna is one of the best drummers in the world man or female in my opinion. Her creativity with the cymbals to accentuate Asami's high notes and drumwork during the guitar solo's is so nice. Also those blast beats she always put into songs 😍
As a Lovebites fan I agree, of course, I would just like to add what I admire most about Haruna - listening to LB songs you would expect the drummer to be a giant pissed off octopus - and she is a 146 cm small, cute, alway smiling woman...
Akane (uh-ka-nay) was the first member of Band Maid that I noticed. Has gone up a few levels since Covid (all that practice). Has most male drummers I've heard covered as well. Superb talent.
Unfortunately Haruna is going to be limited because of the metal genre of Lovebites- 6 Minutes of double kick does my head in. If you want variation in playing it has to be Akane- except for a couple of songs, the double kick is used for accenting the vocals or one of the guitars (Bass and Lead) as well as jazz, funk and the use of off-beat signatures- say no more. My opinion only.
Akane's skill is in her half hidden musicality. Everything she does serves the song. Also she's joined at the hip with bassist MISA. Her solos are short and rooted in the original groove. Her "solo" at yokohama was really unusual, it wasn't a demonstration of high skill and chops (she does that all the time) she started by finding the echo return of the hall and played with that and all the rest was in that playful spirit of exploring sound. All her regular is scored first - she visualises it in a score in her head. She's such a different kind of musician, like most of bandmaid they're classical musicians who literally decided the hardest rock would be more fun. So it's hard to judge her, MISA or Kanami against their peers.
I support your point of view. Akane is a musical painter, her playing is really full of color and life. She is not a soulless automaton who obeys her master metronome.
And Akane features in some crazy heavy 220bpm stuff like Black Hole and every bar is creative. In fact at one point miku takes over holding down the 4:4 and achi drives a drifter.

Although I’m a Lovebites fan, I limit my claims to Lovebites being overall (between all members) the best technically proficient all-female Japanese band, and here referring only to the instrumentals. By narrowing things down so much, these sort of claims can hold up much better, with the position being easier for me to defend. As for your matchup, I would easily give the win to Senri Kawaguchi.

rina has definitely come a long way. at the beginning each member had never played an instrument and chose one. rina almost quit at one point because she felt that she was not progressing at the same rate as the rest were. so glad they kept her on. and i think that tomomi is a bassist that needs more recognition. she really can hold her own. and she's so darn cute ! and that voice !
Each time I see one of those ranking, I'm frustrated because I realize it's impossible for me to choose a top 5, or even a top 10! Those you mention are amazing (and Akane and Haruna are probably my favorite - I never use "best"), but Nagisa (Trident), Nao (MTH), Natsumi (Bridear), Hana (Gacharic Spin), Yuri (Gacharic Spin again!), Misaki (East Of Eden, Lonesome_Blue), Mari (Mary's Blood), Senri, Kanade ... they all should be in a "Top 5".

All of them (and others too) are so great that I wouldn't make any ranking, I would just list them. I don't know, maybe in alphabetical order, maybe because of their age, but I wouldn't dare to judge their skills and decide which one is better. They are all amazing.
Well, it's all personal, more or less. But, not mentioning Hana of Gacharic Spin when she sits behind her spooky Nord drums .... even more notable is that she is an excellent multi-instrumentalist on top of being an outstanding drummer. Don't do that again.

Senri and Murata Tamu outdrums everyone on your list (Tamu is on your list but she should be way up), Senri #1 and Tamu #2, both can play anything and any genre! Check out both drummers personal youtube channel and you'll see why.

I like the preliminary thoughts in this video, which not only outline the role of the drummer in a band but could also serve as an initial introduction to percussion based ensemble playing in general. Albeit I'm not sure about this ranking (respectively the candidates - having in mind that meanwhile the YT has built up its own necessarily filtered media reality). To be honest, the list irritates me in a way. If it were entirely about speed metal drumming (and derivates), I wouldn't care. But it says "Best Drummers" without any specification or restriction and that's quite another calibre. The point is that all of the percussion work represented here is powerful, is done most vividly, but this sort of rock rhythm paradigm has a very simple texture. So, in terms of technique, musicality, orchestration, precision, accuracy and sense of form it seems to me a rather diffuse and indistinct criterion that is not really suitable to fathom a drummer's skills - particularly if the artist claims to be a complete musician. Instead you need a much more demanding and complex approach to test the limits. (Energy is good for heating, dynamics are essential to keep the waves rolling, also passion in music is a very fine thing, but finally a substantial reason should be noticeable for you to get high on your own acting.) So it's a case of thin air: I know of only two Japanese ladies (and a couple of Japanese males!) who are able to deliver the full menu, showcasing professionalism at the highest level. - In the Corona year 2020 a drum fest was held in the City of Angels (actually a streaming event). A potent bunch of representatives of the international percussion aristocracy were present: Simon Phillips, Steve Gadd, Peter Erskine, Gary Husband, Virgil Donati, to name but a few. Only two of the performers were females, both were from Japan (and one was a mere 18 years and a month old). - The reasons for the invitation were obvious and are still verifiable: If you have ever experienced Kanade Sato doing Chick Corea, Bob James, Dave Weckl (Festival de Ritmo - miracle number one), The Brecker Brothers (Heavy Metal Be-Bop - miracle number two), if you have watched her versatile combo playing and some of her Roland demonstration videos (miracles without end), if you have ever heard of Senri Kawaguchi's Triangle, her collaboration with Kiyomi Otaka and other projects, if you have listened to some of those furious triplets cascades, her dense, sophisticated and not rarely dominant playing, then you necessarily know that both artists stand for exceptional musicianship. They realise things on their instruments that can hardly be done any better. And more important: Both (particularly Kanade Sato) contribute to the general shape of a song in a way that the whole phenomenon can be experienced as an organic, well balanced musical entity, no matter what genre it belongs to, no matter what instruments are involved (sort of classical approach). I do appreciate every artist who is mentioned on here. Every drummer girl has her own idea of perfection and artistic fulfilment. However, it seems that only a few can bridge the fundamental gap: The art of drumming per se is actually not part of the harmony concept; to make rhythm patterns, paraphrasing and accentuation more essential, more creative and artistically satisfying, to preserve an obligate sophisticated and intense correspondence within a musical arrangement is a highly demanding task and basically the best quality proof you can get.
These japanese drummers are stuck in the much limited japanese fusion/metal genre and doesn't master the afroamerican classics. They lack the groove, feel and swing that is the foundation of all popular music. Only Yoyoka has done her home work by covering all the drum legends of rock and incorporated them in her musical toolbox
People will be in disagreement no matter what. I have to factor in influence in the rankings. Nao would not make the top 20 on skills, but she has influenced other fantastic drummers which moves her up. The best drummers in the nation don't make the list if no one knows them and they aren't super active. No one knows Senri, and she is one of the most skilled on the planet, but she doesn't make my list, same with Yoyoka, she has to either get in a real band or form one(she is still very young). She still looks like she rarely has fun with others, but when she loosens up and is in a band in the near future, rock star.
Akane is probably the most versatile drummer on this list. She can play everything the rest play and more and proves it by the diverse catalog of Band-Maid songs.
Some might argue that she's not a rock drummer...but then Saki released "Germinans," and basically any rock drummer on these lists got demoted a position. ;)
This list is limited to rock/metal? I think that is the only way you can not have Senri Kawagushi. But even she was seen recently playing with Lisa-x and Ohmura and as well done/doing stuff with Saki so maybe she should qualify.

You need to see more Jrock, there are many drummers who are very good, they always mention the usual ones, it seems like they only make a top for visitors.

There's 2 female Japanese drummers listed on DrummerWorld's western on their Top 500 Drummers of all Time. Senri Kawaguchi is the youngest drummer ever to be so named . . . . at the time. Now, Yoyoka Soma holds that distinction at 11 yrs old. She is now 14 now living in LA and playing at famous venues regularly like the jazz club The Baked Potato and the famous Whiskey a Go Go. Akane Hirose is masterful. Like Led Zeppelin, she is irreplaceable as the drummer in her band. She keeps getting better and better. IMHO Best female Japanese jazz drummer is Senri Kawaguchi. Yoyoka Soma can play jazz with aplomb and can play rock and roll with precision and great energy. Akane sits atop the throne of proper rock drummers in your category. I am ignorant of what Kanade Sato is doing right now but I'm sure it is excellent. Tamura Murata is only a millimeter below Akane in my book. All these women are astounding!
Junna is my number 1 because of her showmanship, entertainment value and talent, her covers of some of the most complicated songs to drum on, not to mention her song writing abilities, she has a few haters claiming she doesn’t actually play the covers she does but that is only because they do not know the original song or how much more she adds to it, as I have always said if your going to do a cover make sure you stay true to the original but add just enough to make it your own which she has mastered, I have others I’m just not sure where to put them, each person had their own spin/flare they bring to the craft, while the talent is important so is the show they put on, if they are boring to watch regardless of how good they are then they only belong in a studio but maybe that is just my opinion
Marina Bozzio certainly looks gorgeous. And she seems to be a good drummer. But you know... Marina sounds somehow... indistinctly. She hits a grandmaster BPM, but is slightly blurry. According to my feelings, Marina just hits weakly. Like a lady. In this regard, I would like to remember Mari from Mary's Blood. She has a very accented beat. I would say that Mari hits like men. But she sounds even stronger than some male drummers.

Not sure why you have a Taiwanese drummer (Vela Blue) in your intro. She is definitely a worthy candidate, but not Japanese. But you missed YOYOKA. YOYOKA and Senri are the only two of all these girls on DrummerWorld's Top 500 Drummers OF ALL TIME. YOYOKA is definitely Top 5, but this list, especially for the Japanese Females, would be better served if it were top 10 (or even 15) since the talent pool is so deep in Japan, and you wouldn't have to drop one of these awesome drummers to put YOYOKA in her place, and could add other much deserving drummers like JUNNA as well.
Yoyoka is a fantastic young drummer with the raw tools to perhaps one day become the best of the bunch. But I don't think she's there just yet. She's better known for her drum covers than for anything of real note created by her.l

"Young drummer" doesn't apply to YOYOKA, as she can do many, many things that many drummers who have been drumming for 20-40 years can't even do, and will never be able to do. Her age is young, but her talent is beyond most adult drummers, even many famous drummers. She does a lot of improv solos and is working on her fourth album as "Ken Okada Group featuring YOYOKA". She put out her own co-written song "Sparkling" and is currently working on her own original album. Her second song is up on her Patreon now. I'm not seeing any of these drummers creating their own songs. I have mad respect for all the drummers featured in this video. Not saying YOYOKA is beeter than them, but she is right there with them. I've seen her take requests on live streams for songs she had not only not played, but had never heard before. She started them rolling and within seconds was playing them almost perfectly. Not like Nandi, who had the drum track removed so she could play whatever she wanted. She gets better almost weekly.
Japan has too many talented female drummers. In my first place, if we talk about speed, technique, inventiveness, uniqueness and songwriting, Akane is unbeaten for me. Always remember that Band Maid songs 90% of the time are in double time with the drums, making Akane plays 280bpm beats.

I do think that it’s useless to give such rankings. Bands are not collections of individuals, success of a band is measured by musicianship and the ability to contribute to the common product. I can see it say in a solo career, but the success of the group consists in success of songs not individual talents. Like in nhl, success of a team is linked to the team, say McDavid scored 10 goals but what’s the point if the team lost to Canucks? It’s just useless. Moreover, you may have 5 best in their instruments, but the music sucks.

No Nao Kawakita? The drummer's mother, who many of these mentioned, has as an idol and the reason for being a drummer. Or why not Chika, the new drummer in Hanabie? Or Junna, the drummer with extreme precision and speed in her feet...? For me, Akane is the winner thanks to her creativity and precision in the complex rhythms she plays. I don’t think you will receive an answer. Although I’m a Lovebites fan, I limit my claims to Lovebites being overall (between all members) the best technically proficient all-female Japanese band, and here referring only to the instrumentals. By narrowing things down so much, these sort of claims can hold up much better, with the position being easier for me to defend.
As for your matchup, I would easily give the win to Senri Kawaguchi.

rina has definitely come a long way. at the beginning each member had never played an instrument and chose one. rina almost quit at one point because she felt that she was not progressing at the same rate as the rest were. so glad they kept her on. and i think that tomomi is a bassist that needs more recognition. she really can hold her own. and she's so darn cute ! and that voice !
You started out correct when you said Haruna was the drummer for Lovebites, then you F'd up and said to check out a Scandal show to see her play.
Each time I see one of those ranking, I'm frustrated because I realize it's impossible for me to choose a top 5, or even a top 10! Those you mention are amazing (and Akane and Haruna are probably my favorite - I never use "best"), but Nagisa (Trident), Nao (MTH), Natsumi (Bridear), Hana (Gacharic Spin), Yuri (Gacharic Spin again!), Misaki (East Of Eden, Lonesome_Blue), Mari (Mary's Blood), Senri, Kanade ... they all should be in a "Top 5".

I like the preliminary thoughts in this video, which not only outline the role of the drummer in a band but could also serve as an initial introduction to percussion based ensemble playing in general. Albeit I'm not sure about this ranking (respectively the candidates - having in mind that meanwhile the YT has built up its own necessarily filtered media reality). To be honest, the list irritates me in a way. If it were entirely about speed metal drumming (and derivates), I wouldn't care. But it says "Best Drummers" without any specification or restriction and that's quite another calibre. The point is that all of the percussion work represented here is powerful, is done most vividly, but this sort of rock rhythm paradigm has a very simple texture. So, in terms of technique, musicality, orchestration, precision, accuracy and sense of form it seems to me a rather diffuse and indistinct criterion that is not really suitable to fathom a drummer's skills - particularly if the artist claims to be a complete musician. Instead you need a much more demanding and complex approach to test the limits. (Energy is good for heating, dynamics are essential to keep the waves rolling, also passion in music is a very fine thing, but finally a substantial reason should be noticeable for you to get high on your own acting.) So it's a case of thin air: I know of only two Japanese ladies (and a couple of Japanese males!) who are able to deliver the full menu, showcasing professionalism at the highest level. - In the Corona year 2020 a drum fest was held in the City of Angels (actually a streaming event). A potent bunch of representatives of the international percussion aristocracy were present: Simon Phillips, Steve Gadd, Peter Erskine, Gary Husband, Virgil Donati, to name but a few. Only two of the performers were females, both were from Japan (and one was a mere 18 years and a month old). - The reasons for the invitation were obvious and are still verifiable: If you have ever experienced Kanade Sato doing Chick Corea, Bob James, Dave Weckl (Festival de Ritmo - miracle number one), The Brecker Brothers (Heavy Metal Be-Bop - miracle number two), if you have watched her versatile combo playing and some of her Roland demonstration videos (miracles without end), if you have ever heard of Senri Kawaguchi's Triangle, her collaboration with Kiyomi Otaka and other projects, if you have listened to some of those furious triplets cascades, her dense, sophisticated and not rarely dominant playing, then you necessarily know that both artists stand for exceptional musicianship. They realise things on their instruments that can hardly be done any better. And more important: Both (particularly Kanade Sato) contribute to the general shape of a song in a way that the whole phenomenon can be experienced as an organic, well balanced musical entity, no matter what genre it belongs to, no matter what instruments are involved (sort of classical approach).
I do appreciate every artist who is mentioned on here. Every drummer girl has her own idea of perfection and artistic fulfilment. However, it seems that only a few can bridge the fundamental gap: The art of drumming per se is actually not part of the harmony concept; to make rhythm patterns, paraphrasing and accentuation more essential, more creative and artistically satisfying, to preserve an obligate sophisticated and intense correspondence within a musical arrangement is a highly demanding task and basically the best quality proof you can get.
These japanese drummers are stuck in the much limited japanese fusion/metal genre and doesn't master the afroamerican classics. They lack the groove, feel and swing that is the foundation of all popular music.
Only Yoyoka has done her home work by covering all the drum legends of rock and incorporated them in her musical toolbox

Nao would not make the top 20 on skills, but she has influenced other fantastic drummers which moves her up.
The best drummers in the nation don't make the list if no one knows them and they aren't super active.
No one knows Senri, and she is one of the most skilled on the planet, but she doesn't make my list, same with Yoyoka, she has to either get in a real band or form one(she is still very young). She still looks like she rarely has fun with others, but when she loosens up and is in a band in the near future, rock star.
Akane is probably the most versatile drummer on this list. She can play everything the rest play and more and proves it by the diverse catalog of Band-Maid songs.

There's 2 female Japanese drummers listed on DrummerWorld's western on their Top 500 Drummers of all Time. Senri Kawaguchi is the youngest drummer ever to be so named . . . . at the time. Now, Yoyoka Soma holds that distinction at 11 yrs old. She is now 14 now living in LA and playing at famous venues regularly like the jazz club The Baked Potato and the famous Whiskey a Go Go.
Akane Hirose is masterful. Like Led Zeppelin, she is irreplaceable as the drummer in her band. She keeps getting better and better.
IMHO Best female Japanese jazz drummer is Senri Kawaguchi.
Yoyoka Soma can play jazz with aplomb and can play rock and roll with precision and great energy. Akane sits atop the throne of proper rock drummers in your category.
I am ignorant of what Kanade Sato is doing right now but I'm sure it is excellent. Tamura Murata is only a millimeter below Akane in my book. All these women are astounding!
Junna is my number 1 because of her showmanship, entertainment value and talent, her covers of some of the most complicated songs to drum on, not to mention her song writing abilities, she has a few haters claiming she doesn’t actually play the covers she does but that is only because they do not know the original song or how much more she adds to it, as I have always said if your going to do a cover make sure you stay true to the original but add just enough to make it your own which she has mastered, I have others I’m just not sure where to put them, each person had their own spin/flare they bring to the craft, while the talent is important so is the show they put on, if they are boring to watch regardless of how good they are then they only belong in a studio but maybe that is just my opinion

Marina Bozzio certainly looks gorgeous. And she seems to be a good drummer. But you know... Marina sounds somehow... indistinctly. She hits a grandmaster BPM, but is slightly blurry. According to my feelings, Marina just hits weakly. Like a lady. In this regard, I would like to remember Mari from Mary's Blood. She has a very accented beat. I would say that Mari hits like men. But she sounds even stronger than some male drummers.
I am not familiar with the Scandal drummer, but otherwise I agree with this list.

Not sure why you have a Taiwanese drummer (Vela Blue) in your intro. She is definitely a worthy candidate, but not Japanese. But you missed YOYOKA. YOYOKA and Senri are the only two of all these girls on DrummerWorld's Top 500 Drummers OF ALL TIME. YOYOKA is definitely Top 5, but this list, especially for the Japanese Females, would be better served if it were top 10 (or even 15) since the talent pool is so deep in Japan, and you wouldn't have to drop one of these awesome drummers to put YOYOKA in her place, and could add other much deserving drummers like JUNNA as well.

Yoyoka is a fantastic young drummer with the raw tools to perhaps one day become the best of the bunch. But I don't think she's there just yet. She's better known for her drum covers than for anything of real note created by her.l

"Young drummer" doesn't apply to YOYOKA, as she can do many, many things that many drummers who have been drumming for 20-40 years can't even do, and will never be able to do. Her age is young, but her talent is beyond most adult drummers, even many famous drummers. She does a lot of improv solos and is working on her fourth album as "Ken Okada Group featuring YOYOKA". She put out her own co-written song "Sparkling" and is currently working on her own original album. Her second song is up on her Patreon now. I'm not seeing any of these drummers creating their own songs. I have mad respect for all the drummers featured in this video. Not saying YOYOKA is beeter than them, but she is right there with them. She has way more than "raw talent". Wave Potter breaks down how complex her skills are in this video of one of her improv solos. I've seen her take requests on live streams for songs she had not only not played, but had never heard before. She started them rolling and within seconds was playing them almost perfectly. Not like Nandi, who had the drum track removed so she could play whatever she wanted. She gets better almost weekly.

Japan has too many talented female drummers. In my first place, if we talk about speed, technique, inventiveness, uniqueness and songwriting, Akane is unbeaten for me. Always remember that Band Maid songs 90% of the time are in double time with the drums, making Akane plays 280bpm beats.

I do think that it’s useless to give such rankings. Bands are not collections of individuals, success of a band is measured by musicianship and the ability to contribute to the common product. I can see it say in a solo career, but the success of the group consists in success of songs not individual talents. Like in nhl, success of a team is linked to the team, say McDavid scored 10 goals but what’s the point if the team lost to Canucks? It’s just useless. Moreover, you may have 5 best in their instruments, but the music sucks.

No Nao Kawakita? The drummer's mother, who many of these mentioned, has as an idol and the reason for being a drummer. Or why not Chika, the new drummer in Hanabie? Or Junna, the drummer with extreme precision and speed in her feet...? For me, Akane is the winner thanks to her creativity and precision in the complex rhythms she plays. It's not often that she repeats herself in a song, but there are variations in each new verse. This makes her a lot of fun to listen to,

The people in Japan who ranked the top 500 Japanese drummers in 2022 would disagree with you. They had Haruna ranked much higher than Akane. Just saying.

Depends on subgenre of metal - playing techdeath drums is ultra hard.

Speed and powerful is not everthing.There is a drummer from your list that bring many styles to her band weather it is Rock, Metal, Dance, Funk, Jazz etc. That is classy andShe is number 1 for me.
