The fact that Punk is back even if it will be brief is quite amazing. He is already mid 40s so like not that old but old for wrestler. Also his exit wasn't the most beautiful. AS FAR AS I KNOW
I'm not sure it was that Punk had heat. He was enhancement talent but he was known enhancement talent with a niche. The wwe guys facing enhancement talent would get a tiny boost from beating enhancement talent but a slightly bigger one from beating someone that's a real name. Punk was a local boy that did local indies. A heel gets more of a crowd reaction from beating a minor "face" enhancement talent than a no name enhancement talent.
@@kthkingNo Maven is talking about Punk having negative heat. That word isn't even used in a positive way by people in the business unless it's in terms of a heel getting heat with the crowd (which is what they're supposed to do obviously). That's why he said management wanted the pinfall to be on Punk, they were already put off by him for whatever reason (indie guys like him and of his size weren't really respected in WWE at that time), and putting the pinfall on a guy in that situation is basically a sure-fire way to kill their career before it even starts. A lot of people don't realize that in the wrestling world, yes your talent makes you go a long way, but for the people who really make it to the top of the business, they've been helped in multitudes of ways by multitudes of people. This is one example of how something small can have a massive impact on perception.
@@CH-vt1ejhes definitely talking about negative heat. There were rumors coming out at this time about certain people, HHH and Michaels namely, that weren't fond of the buzz Punk had built on the indies.
Say what you want about Phil Brooks, CM Punk is a great wrestler and storyteller in the ring. Nobody in their mid to late 40s is going to be what they were in their early 30s, but he definitely knows how to get the desired reaction from the crowd that he's looking for, whether he's on the mic or in the ring. And that's what wrestling is. Working the audience, both in the arena and at home. Getting viewers to care about 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 guys working in the ring in a predetermined situation that 90% of them know is a work. CM Punk as a wrestler has been able to do that as well as anyone in the business right now. It doesn't matter how athletic or how good you are at doing moves if you don't make people care about what you're doing. Great video.
There is something about your narrative, and knowing you really were there, makes it just awesome. And you sir have one of the best dropkicks ever Saludos desde México
Hi Maven! You’re one of my heroes. You inspired me to get back on my feet after heart surgery. I had a hole in my heart. It’s part titanium now and I’m not giving up. Thanks for showing me how to overcome odds and keep going. Much respect all the way from Manila. You rock!
I was standing outside of the nassau coliseum with my fairly large friend at the time. Simon Dean drove by with Victoria in the car and stopped, rolled down the window and shouted “this guys gotta go on my system”. Since then my friend dropped 100 lbs. who says the Simon Dean character was a failed gimmick!
I remember being like 17 and I had grown up a fan of WWF and WCW. I didn't know what a "smark" was yet. A friend of mine and his other friend kept telling me that someone named CM Punk had just been signed by WWE. I said "who is that?" and they told me he's from Ring of Honor. I said "what is that?" They said he was the greatest wrestler in the world. I said "is he as good as John Cena?" They looked at me like I was dumb. That's the day I learned what a smark is
funny thing about your story is how low the bar that was set at the time #1 Cena was and is trash #2 Punk is in no way or form and by ANY means or ANY standards the "best in the world"
I would love to hear your take on the training styles of different wrestlers/trainers from Tough Enough and how it differed from other training you got after Tough Enough, etc.
Man i didn’t know who you were. Never saw ya wrestle. I’m old, 39. But I stopped watching wrestling around 2000. But somehow I came across your vids a while ago and been watching ever since. Finally I subscribed. Your honesty in storytelling and details to the story is actually incredible
Maven is super underrated. One of those wrestlers you appreciate more as an adult. Wish his career had lasted longer :/ WWE should be using him for commentary and background content.
Really killing it with this channel. I’m a life long Nash fan so I am a fan but of his cast, and Steven Richard’s TH-cam is great, but you’ve definitely taken over as my favorite wrestling TH-cam channel.
Exactly, they all played their part in helping to build him. He may have never got his chances without those guys especially with the way the office and the locker room was back then. Fast forward to 2006 and Punk goes to RVD and calls a locker room meeting saying that the meeting isn't about Rob but he just wanted to let him know and RVD is confused as hell thinking when did everything change so quickly to where Punk became locker room leader for WWECW lol
Its so great to see you prospering. I wish you wouldve won the IC title. You also would've been perfect for WWE between 2008-2011, against guys like John Morrison, Sheltom Benjamin (again), etc. Still have the best dropkick in the business!
This has become my favorite channel. WWE is really missing out not having Maven using his talent in the company. The guy just has something that makes you interested in whatever he's talking about
I remember around 2005 when Punk was the King of the Indy's. He had a huge following online, and whilst people loved him, some didn't think he was WWE main event material.
Maven you should go back to WWE as a manager or maybe even the General Manager ASAP!! I think you would be great on those spots. Come on bro, we are patiently waiting!!!
Maybe he did need that Maven "stimulus package" haha. I hope he at least respected you for making him look good as a newbie on Sunday Night! Brilliant break down of the match, as well. Thank you for another great vid, Maven.
Since we can only theorize why management thought Punk should be the fall guy my theory is maybe they judged him by appearance and thought of him as the lesser wrestler among the two guys they had you facing for this match. Listening to Bruce Prichards podcast that seemed to be a continuous thing with him that others judged him just by his looks with the tattoos and not as muscular build. You might ask why did they sign him not too long after this? Simple he was a hot young talent in the independent wrestling scene and wanted to see what Punk could offer WWE.
I think we can all agree that controvercies aside, CM Punk will go down in history as one of the best wrestlers of all time. Dude has done it all in multiple eras, multiple companies, and paved the way for so many independent wrestlers. And the crazy thing is we might be in for his greatest run yet now that he's back in WWE.
Thank you to Mike Bucci, aka Simon Dean, for helping me with this video. What other matches or moments do you want to see me react to?
this is awesome! love the content you have been making!

It’s insane how Punk had heat before he was even signed 🤣 they were trying to bury a free agent, crazy.
@@kthking incorrect. Heat does not mean what you think it means.
@@CH-vt1ejhes definitely talking about negative heat. There were rumors coming out at this time about certain people, HHH and Michaels namely, that weren't fond of the buzz Punk had built on the indies.
@@The-Crypt Ah, cool, stand corrected then.
Protect this man at all costs!
There is something about your narrative, and knowing you really were there, makes it just awesome.
And you sir have one of the best dropkicks ever
Saludos desde México
What’s up Maven, just here to remind you that your are awesome and I love all your content and I’m glad things are going good for ya
Hi Maven! You’re one of my heroes. You inspired me to get back on my feet after heart surgery. I had a hole in my heart. It’s part titanium now and I’m not giving up. Thanks for showing me how to overcome odds and keep going. Much respect all the way from Manila. You rock!
This is great! Thanks Maven
I love you get right to the point! No bs intro, just right to the story!
this man knows the algorithm
Thanks Maven for sharing this story about your match with Punk. Awesome.
Great video it'd be interesting if someone would show this to Punk and get his opinion on it.
In the pre-Peacock days of the WWE Network, I would've loved a type of insight/interview or whatever kind of show hosted by Maven! So authentic!
I’ve been watching all wrestling since like 1989. And Punk is my favorite I’ve ever seen. 🤷🏻♂️
You have, and tell, some great stories. You and Stevie Richards are reigniting my desire to watch wrestling.
I'm not sure whats with the creative decision to have that second camera filming you looking into the first one but I really liked it keep it up!
This is some golden era TH-cam stuff. Thanks Maven
Underrated pro wrestling 🔥
Fastly becoming one of my favorite channels
6:03 He also did that in his return, pounding his fist before the "Clobbering Time"... he really is a great worker
I love these insights into lesser known matches/stories.
You’re only two years older than him…Maven comeback confirmed for rematch? Haha. Thanks for sharing this! 🙏
What a great peek into backstage and how mid cars wrestlers are also very important in the business. Thank you for the story I love it so much
I was standing outside of the nassau coliseum with my fairly large friend at the time. Simon Dean drove by with Victoria in the car and stopped, rolled down the window and shouted “this guys gotta go on my system”. Since then my friend dropped 100 lbs. who says the Simon Dean character was a failed gimmick!
LOOOOOOOOOL
Bro, I could listen to you tell stories all day, every day. That being said, I hope you get back into the ring and make some new memories. Cheers.
That's the day I learned what a smark is
funny thing about your story is how low the bar that was set at the time
#1 Cena was and is trash
#2 Punk is in no way or form and by ANY means or ANY standards the "best in the world"
Nothing wrong with cena yes the. Punk is good but you are right he is not the best in the world
Best wrestling channel on atm
I would love to hear your take on the training styles of different wrestlers/trainers from Tough Enough and how it differed from other training you got after Tough Enough, etc.
Man i didn’t know who you were. Never saw ya wrestle. I’m old, 39. But I stopped watching wrestling around 2000.
But somehow I came across your vids a while ago and been watching ever since. Finally I subscribed. Your honesty in storytelling and details to the story is actually incredible
Maven is super underrated. One of those wrestlers you appreciate more as an adult. Wish his career had lasted longer :/
WWE should be using him for commentary and background content.
Really killing it with this channel. I’m a life long Nash fan so I am a fan but of his cast, and Steven Richard’s TH-cam is great, but you’ve definitely taken over as my favorite wrestling TH-cam channel.
I’m a fan of BOTH of those channels as well!
First Stevie Night Heat/Nova, then Heyman, man Punk has really been helped a ton by ex-ECW guys... Without them, who knows where he would be...
Love hearing this story but I can’t help but keep looking at those pillows on the couch. This are amazing!
Its so great to see you prospering. I wish you wouldve won the IC title. You also would've been perfect for WWE between 2008-2011, against guys like John Morrison, Sheltom Benjamin (again), etc.
Still have the best dropkick in the business!
Good lord, I wasn't expecting this to be so insightful and fascinating.
Coachman says, “My main man Maven” That’s a wrestling name right there!
CM Punk wouldn't be where he is today if it wasn't for Maven.
This has become my favorite channel. WWE is really missing out not having Maven using his talent in the company. The guy just has something that makes you interested in whatever he's talking about
This is great!
Bruv,
You Talking positively about Punk Backstage,
Great stuff
I remember around 2005 when Punk was the King of the Indy's. He had a huge following online, and whilst people loved him, some didn't think he was WWE main event material.
Maven, you and Stevie Richards make the best wrestling content on this whole platform. Top work! Great insight
Maven wrestling CM Punk and getting F5’d first before Soulja Boy shows how legendary he is
I'm just glad to be a "day one" on Maven's TH-cam channel. We already know WWE is gonna pick this man up in the near future. Great video.
DAY 1….. 🙏🏽
Wow, this was an incredible video. It makes me want to know so much more!!! I really got a kick out of knowing this information. Great job Maven!!
