  • Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G 4K Video Test (Tested on Sony A7IV in Melbourne)
So about a year ago, I tested out the Sony 40mm f/2.5 lens. It was a fun little lens. But I was never a 40mm shooter. Maybe I’m just an old generation guy. I rather go for a 35mm or 50mm. So one year later, I picked up the 50mm f/2.5 for my weekend trip to Melbourne. Same as the 40mm f/2.5. The 50mm one is super light weight. Travel light is the key. I have been to the situation before, always bring the best gear for holiday. But I didn’t end up enjoying my trip at all.
So you think f/2.5 is a pretty slow lens. The result might surprise you. When you are shooting close to your subject. The 50mm f/2.5 does produce an amazing bokeh. But of course you can’t compare with the 50mm f/1.2. Consider the lens is just 130g.
Over all, I was very happy with the lens. You get the G lens quality. The auto focus was pretty decent. If you are a 50mm shooter and you travel a lot. This is the lens you should consider. Don’t always think large aperture is the best. It really depends what you are shooting on.

This niche lens looks very nice and suitable for light travelling without compromising too much for picture/video quality. Night shot also looks good. Thanks for sharing this nice clip and keep them coming.

Amazing. I’m picking up a used copy for 550CAD tomorrow from a local shop. Really exited and will be my first 50mm on FF. all my primes are 1.4 but this lens will hopefully be my edc. May I ask what filter you have on the lens?

Amazing video! Was this shot with a gimbal or handheld? If handheld, with active stabilization or gyro? Just want to know what I can expect as I heard Sony lenses with active stabilization performs better than third party

Nice video. I just want this lens for my a7IV. However I don't understand why doesn't have a G lens 9 aperture blades. This is a big mistake of Sony. For this price there is the Zeiss 55 f1.8, a faster lens and 9 aperture blades gives a better background blur - that's true it isn't with 55mm a city travel lens. f2,5 makes this lens a little bit slow (in era of 1.8's) but I think if Sony would have done it in f1.8 or f2 they couldn't sell 50 f1.4 GM lenses any more.

The 55mm Zeiss Sonnar is still the best 50mm lens you can buy not just on Sony E mount but in general, alongside 50mm Zeiss Planar and the 55mm Zeiss Otus. Other 50mm lenses may have faster apertures or they may have better anti flaring coating or whatever... But the 55mm Sonnar renders the best looking images. That lens renders depth, saturation and micro contrast on the same level as some of the other older legendary Zeiss lenses or like the well known ASPH APO lenses from Leica... You won't get that dimensionality, tonality and micro/macro contrast with 99% of other lenses on the market - and the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 has it all! Plus it's an autofocus lens, which is always a plus, because most lenses that have good round rendering and create good dimensionality and micro contrast, are manual focus lenses. The only other 50mm lenses that come close to the 55mm otus and sonnar and 50mm Planar are the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 Nokton and the old Nikkor 58mm 1.2 Noct. There are no other lenses that you can buy, both old or new, that render dimensionality, micro/macro contrast and tonality as good as these 5 lenses. They just don't exist. Not even older Leica or Hasselblad 50mm lenses perform as good as these 5 lenses do.
