Thank you for this excellent video. You're the best teacher I've found yet to help me get to know my cello better. I look forward to watching your other videos.
This was so so helpful!! I have played violin for 13 years, piano for 9 and guitar for two. I have always wanted to learn cello and im thinking about getting a teacher. I'm so happy I found your video, I feel so much more acquainted with cello now (: wish me luck, haha!
Fantastic video Sarah, hello from England! Starting to learn the Cello at a ripe age of 35, with no musical background whatsoever. I've always loved the sound of the Cello, soo relaxing and hits your soul. I purchased a lovely hand crafted Palatino Cello for a fantastic price. So time to put it to great use, as nice as Cellos are to look at too, beautiful instrument.
I am totally new to the cello ,but really appreciate you because you made me feel comfortable none intimidated your approach for teaching me the beginner was excellent ..
Hi there! I'm 21 and I played the cello for a few years growing up. After having a really awful teacher I wound up giving up on it, but last night I ordered a new cello and decided to pick it back up again. I'm very excited, but also a bit nervous that I have forgotten how to play. It'll take some time to get back into the groove of things with it, but I'm very excited. My goal is to be able to play Für Elise flawlessly lol.
I used to play cello as a kid, started out enthusiastic and found it easy, and then I guess it wasn't that easy anymore so I did quit. I have been playing with the thought of playing again for a couple of years and just watching your video made me realise that I do remember a lot of this still 20 years later. Excited to learn again!
That's wonderful!! I've heard it's a lot like riding a bicycle. Most of the technique comes back to you rather quickly. I hope you enjoy picking it up again!
Wow Life-Saver MUCHH, I am a cellist myself, but I haven't played in 4 months. Thank god this video exists, I can finally remember how to play lol. Amazing teaching skills!
It's such a relief to find an instrumental tutorial that's to the point, enjoyable to watch and devoid of pointless lectures and show offs self aggrandizing. Dope shit, keep it up ❤
I have searched for videos on learning the Cello.. I'm planning on teaching myself.. and yours are so easy to follow. Others talk to fast.. and don't explain well.. THANK YOU SO MUCH ..
I'm glad I'm able to explain things well! I always feel myself getting tongue-tied when I film, so it's good to know that the information is still getting out there. haha
Ok. This is my start...let's see how far can I go through your tutorials. ;) Thank you for such a wonderful introduction. It was very nice and clear. Stay Safe. ;)
Because I was so inspired by you and your beautiful music, I finally bought a beginner cello today. Thank you for teaching and inspiring me. Lots of love from Holland❤️
Very well explained! I play guitar but am taking on the cello, I know they are different but I've love Cello forever and I mastered my gtar as far as I wish, u inspire me thx
That's a great switch to make! Someday I think I'll really try to learn the guitar. I keep starting on it, but then my hands begin to hurt and I give up.
Can you make more cello "How to" videos? I have a cello, but don't have access to lessons. I have taught myself to play the piano by ear and have played for more than twenty years. I know that I can teach myself cello, but I'm lacking in the basics and I don't want to learn wrong. I would love to see more about the finger positions. Thank you.
I encourage you to search the web for cello teachers who work via Skype. I know this sounds crazy, but you could use the teacher can observe you and you can see how they would like you to improve. Good Luck!
Thanks to you, at last, I understand where and how to put my thumb without tension, after 1 month of practice already... Thanks a lot! I'm going to watch all of your work on YT right now!
Hi Sarah, I'm flutist but now beginning with cello by my own. Your tutorials definitely helped me quite a lot, but would you mind to explain how is the left hand position? I still don't understand where to place correctly my fingers in the mast. Thanks a lot!
+Marina Márquez Pérez I am glad they are helping! First finger is placed a whole step above the open string. So if the top string is open A, then finger one is B. Finger two is C. Finger three is C#. Finger four is D.
My son got my daughter a Cello and she has lost interest. I love the cello and am going to follow your lessons and see if I can enjoy learning and maybe even one day play a song haha! Here goes
Im considering taking up the cello, and am doing research on it to decide! Your videos are really building my excitement to to learn! Thanks for the good instruction, and keep it up! :)
Hey there! I have been wanting to play cello for years. A friend if mine let me borrow his cello today and I found your video. I almost have the cmaj scale down. Thanks so much. I guess an old dog can learn née tricks. :)
Oh absolutely, definitely keep going for it! You're off to a good start with the C Major. Once you finish with that, going through the circle of fifths will help you learn the rest of your scales in order.
0:37 bruh I wasn’t ready for that earrape P. S. I imagine your a great teacher your very pretty. I used to play the violin, then the flute, I’m going into percussion and I actually think the electric cello is a badass instrument I want to learn how to play and eventually get one :)
Wow, that is so encouraging! I am glad that my cello video helped you and that you loved my other videos as well. Let me know if there is anything you would like to see from my videos. Any cover suggestions? Also, my album comes out January 13th and it has plenty of cello on it!
Sarah Joy Well, it is so kind of you to answer because I do have some questions) The point is that I'm not new to musical instruments. I used to play bass for almost 7 years. Then I switched to acoustic guitar and started writing some kind of my own music. So I can definetely say that I know where the sound comes from and how and so on. But the point is that I decided to learn another instrument. I wanted to take a try on a double bass, but I guess it's enough "bass" for me. AndI really want to try cello. The questions are simple: How to choose an instrument considering the fact that I will learn how to play it and then I will definetely use it in recordings? And is it really necessary to learn it with someone guiding? Because Im pretty sure that even such high-class instruments can be "mastered" on your own too like guitars and basses? P.S. Sorry for my bad english.
I use the cello in almost all of my recordings. It's a very versatile instrument! I would suggest taking lessons. A person can teach themselves, but it will take a very very long time. It is actually much more difficult than the guitar (not talking about classical guitar). The bow is difficult to master. One can reach a certain level, but to become a decent player, I would suggest having a teacher. I hope this helps!
Sarah Joy Yes, I expected that answer. Because I already heard that playing with a bow is really harder than it looks. But how to choose an instrument? I mean there are a lot of them. They are made from different wood and so on. Different sizes.
BallbreakerRUS This depends on your level of seriousness and how much you are willing to spend, but I think it's smart to start out with a student instrument. Assuming you're an adult, you'll want full size (4/4). www.sharmusic.com/Instruments/Violin/ This link should help you quite a bit! They have a full description of each of the instruments in stock. You can read about the tone quality, where it was made, etc.
Hi. Got my cello (a rental) a week ago. Open strings is going pretty well, taking into account that I've never done this before ;-) 1st finger in position 1 on all strings is also coming out ok (not great, but already ok), but I'm having problems with 3rd and 4th fingers. The sound is a whole lot more screechy and scratchy when for instance I place fingers 3 or 4 on the C-string. It gets worse on the other 3 strings. Now, the good news is that it's already not as bad as it was in the beginning of the week, but still ... here's something I would like to request. Could you do a video focussing on the left hand, please? The do's and don'ts. How to hold the hand, how to move it around when switching strings. Perhaps some very simple exercises for a novice like me? Thanks :-)
+Sarah Joy Thanks for considering this :-) A few things that I caught or still catch myself in doing: - I started out last week with the thumb of my left hand pointing up against the neck of the cello; the whole length of my thumb supported the cello. - Although I now try to avoid that, after a while, my thumb "reverts" into that same position (a lot of practice should help solve that) - On other times, I had the neck of my cello rest in the space between thumb and #1 finger (a bit as if I were supporting a violin) - Probably as a result of this, fingers #3 and #4 have a hard time "hitting" the string at the right place. For instance, on de C-string, #3 would play E-flat more easily than E. I don't seem to have this problem when I focus on correct thumb position. - Even with the thumb in the better position, with fingers #3 and #4 immediately "landing on the right note", the sound comes out like a painful whine. Likely a matter of not putting the right pressure on the string? => I was actually surprised that one has to press fairly hard. And a question too: what part of the finger pushes down the string? The tip, right below the nail? Or the softer spot just below? Basically, how does the finger land on the string. Cheers, Jacques.
+Amenhotep03 Hey there! You are asking all the right questions! I am actually filming the video for you right now, so watch out for it on Friday! For now, a condensed analysis of what you're doing is this: - fourth finger is naturally the weakest. I'll show some finger building exercises. - Use the pad of your finger. (not the very tip) Mostly, you just want to make sure that your fingers stay curved - thumb should be entirely relaxed, and be placed in between first and second finger I know this is brief, but hopefully the next video will explain more thoroughly!!
Thanks for the tips. Especially the use of the pad rather than the tip is useful. I tended to use the tips, as they are not as soft as the pad and make the sound come out less scratchy, so I'll focus on that part already :-) Looking forward to the video :-)
I'm going to keep up with you because I'm picking up a Cello so that I can learn. I've always found the Cello and Double Bass to produce wonderful sound.
+mike cheney I agree with you Mike, they do create wonderful sounds. And that is so exciting! If you ever have any questions, just comment on the video and I will be sure to help you out in any way that I can.
+Sarah Joy Will do, I decided do to small space in the facility I'm in I'll take up Viola first and work on Cello once I'm in my own place. As it stands I'm a veteran in a program to help homeless vets get back on their own feet, they have me a job and helping in other aspects. Reason for wanting to play an instrument was because it was a goal I set for myself and I want to keep it. I find it so relaxing watching and listening to violin all the way up to double bass. The instruments are not see as much as they should. Thank you for responding back to me, if you have advice on viola or know someone who could help do hit me back up.
+mike cheney What you do is wonderful, and thank you so much for what you've done for our country. Much respect! I love that this is your reason for learning to play these instruments. My mom actually teaches viola, so I may have her do a few more collaboration videos with me. Do you have any specific questions for her?
+Sarah Joy I would just ask maybe a basics teaching. Finger placement, note reading, how to get familiar with keeping the finger positions. If there are sites she would suggest for music or beginner books.
John Rey Cantos Yes! You should definitely try to learn the cello. I will continue to release more cello videos the help you out! I have 3 cello lesson videos so far. Ask me questions any time and I will definitely answer them.
Both instruments are challenging in their own ways. I would have to say cello is more difficult in my opinion though. It takes quite a while to just get your bowing technique correct let alone getting left hand technique down. I do not say that to discourage you from learning though!
Hi Sara, I play the flute right now, but i would like to pick up the cello as my secondary instrument. I am only in the 7th grade, so what cello should i try, I have seen 2/4 cellos but I am not sure what it is for. Also i like in KY, and I am having trouble finding a teacher (orchestra is not available at my school) . Pleases respond if you have any tips. Thanks 😊
Holly Haas Hi! Honestly, it depends on how tall you are. Unless you're tall for a 7th grader, I would suggest a half size or three quarter size. Keep on trying to find a private teacher! In the mean time, get acquainted with the instrument (by just using your ear) and just keep watching TH-cam tutorials. :)
Hi Sarah ~ Want to THANK YOU for your time and effort in putting out these videos! I am a grandmother of four starting to learn to play the cello. From what I understand, learning to play an instrument at my age, is like learning a new language and can only help keep my brain sharper as I get older. I love learning! I have in my possession a 3/4 cello to start learning on? I'm guessing that a 4/4 would be better. Your thoughts? Again, THANK YOU for your time Dear One. siouxzenrose
+Susan Rose Hi there :) I am so happy to hear that you are starting to learn the cello! I would definitely recommend learning on a 4/4, but it really depends on your height. Do you mind me asking how tall you are?
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! It's a relief to have something I feel like I actually understand. I play the flute, piano, and for a short amount of time played the french horn. I do not play any string instruments but I want the cello to be my next instrument. I had a few questions though. 1: is it very hard to learn? I don't get into instruments depending on how hard or easy they are, but I would like to prepare myself and have more of an idea of what I'm getting into. 2. I know with string instruments like guitar cause calluses and are hard on your fingers, is the cello like this as well? And last, do any of you have any tips for beginners? What kind of cello should I get? Is there anything I need to know about playing a cello? Thanks! ^-^
+Abigail G Hi! I am so glad it can help :D 1. It is very difficult, but I have never played a wind instrument, so I'm not quite sure how it compares. It usually takes 3 to 5 years to become reasonably proficient on the cello. 2. Yes, absolutely. It can be very painful! 3. I am actually posting a whole video on how to shop for a cello in a couple of weeks! Other than that, all of the other tips that I can think of are in my other cello lesson videos. There's a whole playlist :D But I will definitely make a specific video for you on what kind of cello to get.
+Abigail G hmm.. I'm going to still say full size, but I would highly suggest going to an instrument shop. Let them see you in person and give a recommendatiin based on that. :)
Hi, I really love your videos! I watched the movie "If I stay" and ever since then i have been wanting to learn how to play the cello. I haven't yet purchased a cello and i have a question. what would be a good size for a beginner? and how do i go about picking the size? does it go by height? I'm 5'9, so what size cell would i need?
+Christyn Edelmann Hello!! Thank you!! Oh yes, that's a good movie :) The level of playing does not actually affect the size, rather you're height does. Since you're 5'9, you will definitely want a full size (4/4).
+Sarah Joy thank you for responding :) is it hard to learn? I'm currently learning how to play the acoustic, and the cello is next on my list. But this is the first time ever trying to learn an instrument, I have no musical talent lol. so what would be a good tip on learning?
You mentioned in another post, that you have a 'metronome + drone' device that you really like. I see that many cellists practice with a metronome, and I have begun using one also, really helps. However, I'm not sure how or why you use a drone in your cello practice?
Hello Jim, A drone should be set to the tonic. As you play through the etude, scale, or piece, you should tune each note to this tonic pitch. Even professionals use this to keep their ears in top condition. One's intonation can start to degrade over time and a drone is a good way to prevent this from happening.
The double bass is just another term for a stand up bass. The double bass is much larger than the cello! Its strings are in order: E, A, D, G. The Cello strings are: C, G, D, A. The bass has a much deeper sound and is lower down on the octave scale as well. I hope that could help!
hi, I really loved your video, your such a talented musician! I was just wondering how old were you when you started playing the cello? I'm 14 years old and I would love to play this instrument:)
Iseult Licatese I was five years old, but it's never too late to start! One of the best cellists I've met started when he was in the 8th grade. It might take extra determination and hard work, but go for it!!
Sarah thank you for this video. Ive been looking into learning the cello, its something I've wanted to do for some time now. I have question about holding the bow, I have nerve damage in my right hand and cannot feel my pinky, and have limited use. Is there some way to compensate for this? or will this make it impossible to play?
+Andrew sorry for this late response! I think it might prove challenging, but no, I don't think it's impossible. The bow basically is controlled by thumb, first finger, and pinky. I think, however, that you will be able to manipulate the bow alright so long as you can apply pressure with pinky. I hope this answered your question!
Sal Aguayo That is so awesome! I will keep releasing new videos :) I have two other cello lesson videos on my page. Also, comment or message me if you have any other questions :)
Hi! First of all, I really enjoyed the tutorial, it was very productive :) Plus I have a question.. I'm 19 years old and I wonder if it is a little bit too late for me to take cello lessons? I do have a background with instruments such as piano and guitar but I always wanted to be professional in cello, so what is your opinion?
I will never say that anyone is too old to become a professional musician. However, it is much much much more difficult. You will need an exceptionally good teacher, will need to catch up on repertoire, will need to gain orchestral experience, and basically build your resume from the ground up. I don't want this to discourage you though! If it's something you're willing to sacrifice for, go for it.
Hi! Thank you for the video. I was wondering if there are books for cello equivalent to Le Violon for violin? Or any other books for beginners? Thank you!
Thank you so much for the amazing tutorial, it's the best one I found so far! Yesterday was the first time I ever played a cello (tried to) but the worst thing was the posture and me trying to hold the cello in a right position,so my back hurt me a lot. Too bad I can't see your legs in the video and the way you're holding the instrument with your knees. I'm 23 years old. Do you think I will be able to learn play the cello by myself without a teacher? I mean, with youtube videos?
Im glad it can help! Make sure you have a good chair! Don't sit on one that is too soft or too low. Whenever you hold the instrument with your knees, the cello should really just rest inside. There shouldn't be a lot of squeezing. Well, if you already have some musical background, you might figure it out to a certain point. If not, it will be much much harder. I would really suggest finding a teacher if you are serious about learning.
Hello Sarah, right I'm really interested in beginning to learn the cello and I am planning on getting one for my bday in April. However, I'm in the predicament of knowing no cello teachers in the vicinity any tips please? Also, do you have any tips towards buying a first cello. I checked on sites and apparently I need a 4/4 cello but I don't know if that is correct. Yours sincerely Jae
Jae Harwood Hi Jae! Sorry for the late reply! This comment slipped past me. Well, definitely get a 4/4 (assuming you're a full grown adult). Where are you located? I might know someone in the area. When buying your instrument, make sure that the strings are not too far above the fingerboard. This problem is caused by the bridge being to tall. It can cause injury. Test out the pegs as well. Make sure they don't severely slip or stick. You can always take it to an instrument shop to get it set up correctly. ALWAYS play it first before buying. Don't just order one over the internet. There can be a lot of issues. I hope this helps!
I wish I had you as a music teacher in school (someone with passion) ..we barely have a music program when it used to be so big. There's maybe less than 20 kids in band. I played steel pans but wanted to learn more. No one ever cared. They only care about football. Pretty sure if they could the school would sell the instruments just to pay for football. I graduated this month so now I guess it does not matter. I'm learning violin and guitar on my own now.
I completely understand that. Where I'm from, hardly anyone cares about music either. Like you said, it's all about football. :/ Even though you've graduated, surely there must be a community orchestra that you could join at some point. Might be something to research!
Maybe it has already been commented on - there is a pedal harp in the reflection of the mirror behind you next to the piano - do you also play the harp?
Hi! I just wanted to say hi and tell you a little bit about my self. I started playing violin when I was 6 and have played ever since. Recently I have been I have been interested in playing cello! So on September 1st I have my very first lesson! If anyone has any tips I would love to hear! Thanks ❤️
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! Before your lesson, it might help to know some basic scales. Whatever your level of preparation, however, just have fun! I find that I get a lot more out of lessons when I'm relaxed and at ease.
I play flute, and I've been wanting to play the cello for some time. I just bought a cello today for $20 from a friend. It's a bit smaller than yours, and I've been having some trouble tuning it. I have a tuner, but every time I had one string tuned, and went to another string, then went back to the first, the first string would be slightly flat again. How would you fix that?
Thank you for replying. What's putty, and where can I get some? The boy who sold me the cello also said something about rosalind (sp?) that you put on the bow to make the sound.
Also, the D string peg, when I tune it (sometimes, not so much now) would tighten the string, then go back to its original position, making the string way flat again. I had to literally push the peg into the peg box to make sure it stayed, and I'm not sure if that's good for the cello.
It has been 27 years since I have played, and my Husband and kids gave me one for Christmas!....but 27yrs ago I knew how to play. Thank You Sarah for getting back into my first love.
Hello :) I have many questions so please don't get angry at me ... (just kidding). I got interested in Cello when I'm reading the novel If I Stay by Gayle Forman and now I really want to play it! 1. What is the tuning of the Cello? 2. What is the rosin? 3. What is the price range of Cello? 4. What Cello makes the best sound? 5. Lastly is Cello hard to play? . Actually I play Laud (it is a plucked instrument so I'm really not familiar with a bow) its from the string ensemble called Rondalla, its in the Philippines. I hope you'd answer even though these are many. :D
+Kheen Velarde Fantastic! Never read the book, but I saw the movie. :) 1. Skinniest string (the highest) is A. Next over, D. Next, G. Next, C. 2. It is made from tree sap. You rub it on the bow to make the hair sticky. When the hair is sticky, it is able to grab the string causing it to vibrate faster than your eye can see. These vibrations produce the sound. 3. Beginner cello - $700 - $2,000 Intermediate - $2,000 - $3,000 Advanced - $3,000 - $ 10,000 Professional - $10,000 + 4. An expensive one ;) 5. Very much so That sounds like an awesome instrument!! Happy to answer :)
I've played violin for about 5 years now (had a teacher for two years, beyond then self taught) and I am still deciding whether I want to try cello as well. The price is a little deterring, but the sound is so beautiful! I've noticed that when people play cello they move the bow A LOT less than when playing violin. I've seen people play 4-6 notes on one "bow pull" whereas on violin the most I play is two, maybe three on an extra slow song. Why is this?
Hello Sarah, thx for your videos! I'm a cello beginner. One thing that really frustrated me is that whenever I play A string, I always feel my arm is too short and my wrist gets extra tight. Do u have any suggestions for that?
That is one of the most common problems for beginners I've noticed. Keep your shoulder dropped, and pronate your fingers. Your wrist can bend slightly to accommodate for the angle. It's hard to say what else could be wrong without actually watching you play, but hopefully this can help. Watch yourself play in front of a mirror, and then compare it to someone else's playing. See if there are any visual differences.
Thx Sarah! I am wondering will you considering short-term online tutoring? I will live in Japan for two months, and I want to find a online cello tutor during the two months. After I come back to the US, I probably will find a local cello teacher. I live in CA :) I think you are one of the sweetest cello teacher I've ever seen!
Im very tempted to start playing cello, that is why I'm here, but i need to buy an electrical one because of my neighbors and also I have nobody to teach me around. Will this work :D
Im in middle school... 6th grade. I am in orchestra and i dont really ever understand the teacher. Please do more beginner cello tutorials. P.S. Youre really pretty :))))
So my 10 year son is going into 5th grade. In 4th he played the viola but decided he to play cello. So naturally he need to learn basic lessons before entering a new class. So my question is... how do I know if he’s sized properly? I feel like he’s struggling with the bow.
I just started playing the cello a few days ago, and when I put my bow in the strings, it bounces a little and it sounds horrible. I have been trying really hard to stop (like pressing down and moving the bow slower), but the it keeps bouncing on the strings. I'm sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
+Edie Hughes You might try putting on more rosin, and pressing more with the right hand first finger. Make sure that your hand is angled the right way. Might check out my video on the left hand. Hopefully that helps!
Pablo Menéndez If you aren’t playing on the other strings, no, the finger tips should only touch the string you are playing on. This is always the case unless you are playing chords or double stops (two notes at once). But it’s good to get in the habit of touching one string at a time first before moving on to chords and double stops since you’ll be playing on one string most of the time
Thank you for this excellent video. You're the best teacher I've found yet to help me get to know my cello better. I look forward to watching your other videos.
Oh my gosh, a beautiful fairy is teaching us cello.
Pro tip : watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies lately.
@Nixon Atlas yup, I have been using Flixzone for months myself :D
@Nixon Atlas yea, been watching on flixzone for since december myself =)
This was so so helpful!! I have played violin for 13 years, piano for 9 and guitar for two. I have always wanted to learn cello and im thinking about getting a teacher. I'm so happy I found your video, I feel so much more acquainted with cello now (: wish me luck, haha!
Good luck!! You've got this!
Anabelle heyyyy bravet on smiley face first (:

Great video, I used to play the cello 40-50 years ago and want to re-learn, this is a great place to start. Thank you
Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your musical and teaching talents with us. You are wonderful!
Such a beautiful instrument!
The cello is very beautiful! :) You have very good taste in art Samantha.
I am totally new to the cello ,but really appreciate you because you made me feel comfortable none intimidated your approach for teaching me the beginner was excellent ..
Hi there! I'm 21 and I played the cello for a few years growing up. That's wonderful!! I've heard it's a lot like riding a bicycle. Most of the technique comes back to you rather quickly. I hope you enjoy picking it up again!
I hope so too! I have already contacted a potential teacher that plays in the local symphony orchestra and she has a spot free for a new student! :D
Dope shit, keep it up ❤
Hi Elissa! Thanks for this awesome comment!
I have searched for videos on learning the Cello.. I'm planning on teaching myself.. and yours are so easy to follow. Others talk to fast.. and don't explain well.. THANK YOU SO MUCH ..

Oh wow, that is just so wonderful to hear!
I'm learning the cello very soon and I'm very exited to start! Great video x
No way??? Keep me updated on how it goes Isabella :) I have many cello lesson videos already on the channel with more to come.
Thank you.
Jacobs family I will make more for you of course! :)
+xyrukki Oh that's so awesome!! Really happy that I could help!
Hi Jessica! Love your tutorials! Please keep on posting!!
Here goes
I've started cello 4 days ago and I found your Chanel who is really helpful 😊 I really love it :) thanks from France
Hello Matt, congrats on starting the cello! Very exciting. :) I'm glad my channel can help. Greetings from Texas.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m just starting on playing cello.
Awesome!! Hope this can help.
your a grace for my heart! your an informative teacher. keep playing
Im considering taking up the cello, and am doing research on it to decide! Your videos are really building my excitement to to learn! Thanks for the good instruction, and keep it up! :)
+Noah Franta You should!!! It's a great instrument :) Glad I could be of help!
You're an amazing teacher.
+dxrkfoxx Thank you, I hope that my lessons help!
I love your channel and your house too. Blessings
Thank you so much! I like your channel as well. :)
lovely! I could watch you all day what a talented sweetheart
Excellent video! Thank you!
0:37 bruh I wasn’t ready for that earrape
P. S. I imagine your a great teacher your very pretty. I used to play the violin, then the flute, I’m going into percussion and I actually think the electric cello is a badass instrument I want to learn how to play and eventually get one :)
You are an amazing teacher :). Thank you so much.
+Cap'n Smirkz Oh thank you! I'm happy to be able to help.
I was searching for some cello videos for beginners, but I found much more.
I think I love you(
Wow, that is so encouraging! I am glad that my cello video helped you and that you loved my other videos as well. Let me know if there is anything you would like to see from my videos. Any cover suggestions? Also, my album comes out January 13th and it has plenty of cello on it!
Sarah Joy Well, it is so kind of you to answer because I do have some questions)
The point is that I'm not new to musical instruments.
The questions are simple:
How to choose an instrument considering the fact that I will learn how to play it and then I will definetely use it in recordings?
Hi sarah!!! Great video! :)
Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to them😊
Stay tuned for them :) If you subscribe, it should send you notifications when I post new videos. I post a new video every Wednesday
I just made a new one two days ago!
I loved this! Thank you.
Thanks :-)
+Amenhotep03 This is a wonderful idea! I will look into it. Watch out for the video in the future. Thank you for the idea
+Sarah Joy Thanks for considering this :-)
A few things that I caught or still catch myself in doing:
- I started out last week with the thumb of my left hand pointing up against the neck of the cello; the whole length of my thumb supported the cello.
- Although I now try to avoid that, after a while, my thumb "reverts" into that same position (a lot of practice should help solve that)
- On other times, I had the neck of my cello rest in the space between thumb and #1 finger (a bit as if I were supporting a violin)
- Probably as a result of this, fingers #3 and #4 have a hard time "hitting" the string at the right place.
Cheers,
Jacques.
+Amenhotep03 Hey there! You are asking all the right questions! I am actually filming the video for you right now, so watch out for it on Friday! For now, a condensed analysis of what you're doing is this:
- fourth finger is naturally the weakest. I'll show some finger building exercises.
- Use the pad of your finger. (not the very tip) Mostly, you just want to make sure that your fingers stay curved
- thumb should be entirely relaxed, and be placed in between first and second finger
I know this is brief, but hopefully the next video will explain more thoroughly!!
Thanks for the tips. Especially the use of the pad rather than the tip is useful. I tended to use the tips, as they are not as soft as the pad and make the sound come out less scratchy, so I'll focus on that part already :-)
Looking forward to the video :-)
This is great!
Julia Licup Thank you Julia :)
do you think an 18 yr old boy could still learn this stuff? please because i really want to learn this instrument.
John Rey Cantos Yes! You should definitely try to learn the cello. I will continue to release more cello videos the help you out! I have 3 cello lesson videos so far. Ask me questions any time and I will definitely answer them.
thank you for the response!!! your tutorial really does help me :D Question which one is easier Piano or Cello?
Both instruments are challenging in their own ways. I would have to say cello is more difficult in my opinion though. It takes quite a while to just get your bowing technique correct let alone getting left hand technique down. I do not say that to discourage you from learning though!
It's never too late! I'm 22 and just got a cello
I'm 23 and I'm about to get myself a cello. ;-;
HUUUUUUG IT
I'm learning that piece what you have played, i should just to tune in properly :o
Please make more videos! I'm starting to teach myself! This helped a lot
Definitely will keep making videos. :) Glad it helped!
Thank you so so much, I just bought my cello and now I can play the scales
That is awesome!!! Scales are the best place to start.
Awesome I just started
I'm ready to learn the cello! I've been playing the piano for 30+ yrs. what are the names of some good mid-grade to high standard cellos?
I actually have a tutorial on that! I think it's called "Pieces that all string players should learn". Something like that..
Omg I never knew how much I needed this!! Lol now I realize why my teacher always tells me I'm holding my cello wrong 😂 thank you ♡
Hi Sarah ~
Want to THANK YOU for your time and effort in putting out these videos!
Thanks! ^-^
+Abigail G Also, what size should I get? I'm pretty small and 5'3".
+Abigail G Hi! I am so glad it can help :D
+Sarah Joy Thank you!
What's the name of the song you played at 8:30, please I like it.
Ben Cheikh Anas Bach's Cello Suite no.1
Thanks Sarah. I'm diving into scales on the Yamaha SVC-110 silent cello; that way my intonation only irritates me. ;-(
Hi,
I really love your videos!
Hello Jim,
A drone should be set to the tonic. As you play through the etude, scale, or piece, you should tune each note to this tonic pitch. Even professionals use this to keep their ears in top condition. One's intonation can start to degrade over time and a drone is a good way to prevent this from happening.
Thanks so much this really helped! Wish I could just go get lessons from you hahaha
NICE I Am confident about learning the cello now 😁
Awesome!!
What is the double bass and what is the different between double bass and cello?
+Sarah Joy thank you for your answer:) I'll try this for sure! 😌
I will keep releasing cello videos to help you out! I have 2 other How To videos about the cello right now on my channel.
Sarah Joy yes it did thank you sarah :) ill be renting one and trying it out!
"and this is just thumb" lol. thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video! Are you playing a 4/4 cello or a 7/8 cello?
+ariannat99 4/4 :)
AWESOME THANKS, IM JUST LEARNING
Sal Aguayo That is so awesome! I will keep releasing new videos :) I have two other cello lesson videos on my page. Also, comment or message me if you have any other questions :)
Thanks alot i appreciate that, i play the bass now but i always loved the sound of the cello figure never to late to learn. love you videos
Thank you Sal Aguayo ! Have a great day
I just got my cello today and I can't figure out how to make a single note play. Do you have a video on which way and directing I play the bow
Thank you!
+Hourvatat My best suggestions are Suzuki and Essential Elements.
this is really helpful THX for making this
+Katarina Z I'm so glad it could help!
What kind of cello are you playing in this video? It sounds absolutely angelic.
Thank you! It's an old German cello from the 60's.
great video, thank you!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
just wanna throw my bass guitar and grab some cello, great vids..
+reign jardinazo You should do it and ask me any questions that you have while learning!
You can learn both!
Holy Crap man i feel the exact same way!
i thinking the same thing
On learning the cello soon and I'm so excited but they said its the hardest but I don't know can u tell me if that's so thank you
+Quinn Gostovich it is pretty difficult. All of the stringed instruments take a lot of time and a lot of practice!
Hi Sarah Good day
Hope things are going good .
Could you tell me how to first position for all four strings ( Are all same distance ?
+sdhdeux that is a harp, yes! :) I can "play" it, but I have not learned any technique. I am in the orocess though!
Thank you very useful 😀
Glad it can help!!
Thank you!
That helped me so much thank you
I'm so happy to hear that!
You have such a lovely home from the looks of it. :)
Thanks Korina :)
I find that I get a lot more out of lessons when I'm relaxed and at ease.
what do you recommend for tuning
I would recommend practicing with a drone. I use a Dr. Beat. It’s a drone and metronome in one - pretty pricey, but worth it in my opinion.
Well, it's probably just the instrument itself, but perhaps putty will help.
3. Beginner cello - $700 - $2,000
Intermediate - $2,000 - $3,000
Advanced - $3,000 - $ 10,000
Professional - $10,000 +
4. An expensive one ;)
5. Very much so
That sounds like an awesome instrument!! Happy to answer :)
+Sarah Joy Thank you very much :D
Thank you
What size cello is that???
I've played violin for about 5 years now (had a teacher for two years, beyond then self taught) and I am still deciding whether I want to try cello as well. The price is a little deterring, but the sound is so beautiful! I've noticed that when people play cello they move the bow A LOT less than when playing violin. I've seen people play 4-6 notes on one "bow pull" whereas on violin the most I play is two, maybe three on an extra slow song. Why is this?
I've never noticed that before. I think it probably has more to do with the pieces and styles, but maybe you're right. ??
Should the bridge be pretty much straight up and down or is it slanted in one direction or another
Pretty much straight up and down. They can become warped, so perhaps it's time for a trip to the shop. :)
You're amazic, I like of your project. Your face is adorable.
Congratulations for your dedicated.
Im very tempted to start playing cello, that is why I'm here, but i need to buy an electrical one because of my neighbors and also I have nobody to teach me around. Will this work :D
I play the cello thanks so much for the tips
🙃
+hopepm student11 Yeah! Happy to help. :)
Im in middle school... 6th grade. I am in orchestra and i dont really ever understand the teacher. Please do more beginner cello tutorials. P.S. Youre really pretty :))))
+makkadoodle doo13 I certainly will do that! Do you have any specific questions that I can help with?
+Sarah Joy actually, can you try to explain how to wear the shoulder rest... I just started and i kinda suck:|
what is the name of the tune u played at 08:30? Is it a song or a tune?
+Ananya Mohapatra It is the Prelude from Bach's Suite I for unaccompanied cello :)
+Sarah Joy thank u mam
Thanks
So my 10 year son is going into 5th grade. In 4th he played the viola but decided he to play cello. So naturally he need to learn basic lessons before entering a new class. So my question is... how do I know if he’s sized properly? I feel like he’s struggling with the bow.
I have a question at about what height should you be to need a 4/4
+Reacis Peiciz oh goodness.. that's tricky. Usually the average height of a twelve year old will suit a full size.
How do you know what size you want, like what's 4/4 o4 1/4 mean when you buy a cello?
+Avery Jester If you're fully grown, buy a 4/4.
Since I'm twelve and i'm interested in playing, what size do you think?
I just started playing the cello a few days ago, and when I put my bow in the strings, it bounces a little and it sounds horrible. I have been trying really hard to stop (like pressing down and moving the bow slower), but the it keeps bouncing on the strings. I'm sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
+Edie Hughes You might try putting on more rosin, and pressing more with the right hand first finger. Make sure that your hand is angled the right way. Might check out my video on the left hand. Hopefully that helps!
Should the fingers not touch the other strings?
Pablo Menéndez If you aren’t playing on the other strings, no, the finger tips should only touch the string you are playing on. This is always the case unless you are playing chords or double stops (two notes at once). But it’s good to get in the habit of touching one string at a time first before moving on to chords and double stops since you’ll be playing on one string most of the time
