Smile 2 was extremely underrated and had the best acting performance of the year by Naomi Scott. There were also several set pieces, what Kubrick would call “non-submersible units,” that were absolutely outstanding. The opening one shot, the post-car crash, the car crash, the apartment panic attack, the hospital scene, the dance rehearsal, the freezer…Naomi carried that film and it’s an outrage that she’s not nominated for anything, especially considering she ALSO wrote and performed those songs. Incredible.

I was a fan of Substance, but I just dont think there was anything special about what Demi Moore did. Like I think she did a great job, but I could see another actress in her place. I can NOT say the same for Naomi Scott. I actually dont know a single actress who could have done what she did.

@@brentisverycool Check out the SHUDDER movie "Watcher"...not "The Watcher". Red Rooms and Strange Darling were 2 of my favorites this year, and I think it is kinda of a mash up of both movies. Based upon pace and tone of those movies you may feel that a mash up of the two would be a tall order. It was, and I think it was well executed. Don't let the SHUDDER ORIGINALS deter you from watching it. While many are trash, are are a few gems...like the aforementioned and "Hush" from Netflix, which is one of the better home invasion movies of recent vintage (if not ever).

My favs ( still can't watch Queer or Brutalist anywhere around me )
1- I Saw The TV Glow: The movie that I related to most probably in my whole life. Cried for hours.
2- Evil Does Not Exist: A movie that argues that epistemologically evil does not exist. Neither does goodness. A perspective of a tree or a wasabi plant is no different than that of a deer, a logger, a child, or glamping company workers. ( The camera literally embodies the perspective of a plant at some point ). Every perspective is upstream from another, and if balance is not protected a perspective will feel pain and it will lash out the way it materially can. Every perspective is ontologically driven by stimuli of its material surroundings and knows no better. And the ending tests that thesis to its extremes. This is a grieving man who took solace in the forest, and in the process started to communicate the full degree of congruence which he feels and started to react like a deer. ( One of the best titles for a movie ever ).
3- Challengers: Luca's movies are like femme fatale in movie form. Their unattainability intrigues me and makes me long. I simply can't resist.
4- Red Rooms: The lengths we go to jolt ourselves into feeling something and feel comfort even in the most disturbing places. Had a whole existential crisis about why I love Gaspar Noé's films after watching this movie lmao.
5- The Beast: That horribly self-destructive behavior we exhibit when we become lonely.... Heavily relate!!
6- No Other Land: The most important movie right now.
7- La Chimera: Grief displayed in the most tender and gentle way possible. Deeply dug it.
8- Caught By The Tides: I don't know how to describe or categorize this film. It's a compilation of the outtakes of director's old films, documentary footage and new footage with no narrative rhythm or flow whatsoever and it shows the fleeting passage of time and the chaos of life in a very experimental and moving way. This movie lingered in my brain for a while.
    9- Furiosa: Movies are amazing.
10- Anora: Looking back, that whole section when they're looking for the guy doesn't feel like it's rooted in anything but a mild attempt to entertain and it drags. But I loved how unreflective most of the movie was until it suddenly burst in the end, it perfectly embodies Anora's denial and emotional detachment in its form until it's too late. Kinda reminded me of Oppenheimer in that sense.
If you made it this far, happy 2025 !! ❤

I would love a video that breaks down everything you look for when critiquing a film; including the script, acting, technical side of production, post, and personal preferences. I'm curious about your thought process as you're taking it all in.
Like I mostly focus on the script as the foundation, and imagine how many different ways it could have played out with all the moving parts throughout the production process.

Hey just a tip, if you do a video like this, it would help us a lot to put the movie poster beside the current movie you are talking about (if only for a few seconds). This helps us identify it so that if we decide to watch a movie on your recommendations, we can see it's the right one. We also get to see the actors who are in it. There's a lot you can tell from marketing material like that, if it's our vibe, and visual identification is great. Just think of yourself as a viewer of your own video.

Refreshing to see a reviewer base her selections in accordance with what she thought was her personal best as opposed to those which are the most commercially viable and/or critically acclaimed/awards based. 'The Substance' was my favorite of the ones you listed. The effects were really good and Demi Moore in particular was terrific. It was kind of like a combination of various elements from both 'Black Swan' and 'Black Mirror.'

But in all fairness, if I remember correctly, she acknowledges their strengths and admits she just doesn't connect with them.

Genius. And yes, that ending is perfect. I was running through my head all of the different ways this could have ended between them, and this one blew them all away.

@ yeah I didn’t like how bitchy she was to Oleg. He was a genuinely sweet character… but what played out at the end felt very human and real. It wasn’t glamorous. It was 2 people who circumstances thrust together, and human emotions took control. Chefs kiss of an ending

Definitely the Art House Cinephile Top Ten list as most people will not have seen most of these obscure films. Have to draw the line at The Substance which had about 5 walk outs (audience of 15) in my screening and the remaining people were scrolling their phones for the last 45 minutes of the film. It was also one of those rare films that gave me an actual migraine after watching it. Not sure if that was intentional on the director's part or not but sure felt like someone had slipped me The Substance while sitting there.

It's excellent - very very interesting lead performance, imagine a movie where you're never quite sure the main character's motivations are, yet you're fascinated all the way through -- there's 2 very creepy scenes in it, when you see it you'll know hehe It's especially great if you're deep into true crime videos on youtube. It always surprises me how much you struggle with Guadagnino films considering that several seem like they would appeal to you thematically or stylistically based on your reviews. As a fan of his work (I agree that much of it has flaws), it's great to see Queer make your list. I'm looking forward to watching most of the other films on your list because I don't think I've seen my "favorite" or "best" film of 2024 yet.
