I've watched this video probably 50 times, and it never ceases to amaze me. Yeah Edgar steals the show at 3:04, but the way he is passing it off to Yo-Yo, the way Yo-Yo is subtly "taking" the lead, giving the lead back to Chris after the climax, and then Chris handing it back to the beautiful Mandolin theme with Stuart. These guys know how to create music by sharing the limelight. Unparalleled talent.
It fascinates me how Mr. Meyer seems to need to take a moment to process what just happened right after the song ends, almost like waking from a dream. If listening to this gives me goosebumps, I can only imagine how much more powerful it is to play in such an ensemble.
I come back to this tune once in a while, and that bass solo always hits me hard. When he plays that low D its like a freight train running through you !
Watching their faces, so absorbed and into it! That bass solo! To see Chris not playing the mandolyn and everyone so brilliant! Thanks for the joy during these difficult times!
@YoYoMa As if there is any doubt about how much you are loved and appreciated! The absolute delight that you take in all sorts of music, encouraging world musicians to work together and share more joy enriches us all. I have no family so the holidays for me are mostly vicarious enjoyment and trying to bring joy to others which brings me joy. Music is a big part of that, of course.
It's just simply amazing to SEE musicians getting completely CONSUMED by what they're doing. And you go further and further down into the musician's mind as the song gets heavier and heavier, and then INSTANTLY we're snapped back into this world when the song comes to a close. It really shows you all of the emotion and passion they possess that's just underneath the surface waiting to explode outward given the right mix of magic and energy. One of my all-time favorite albums :)
absolutely and just the intracasy of the Harmony's them selves I used to play cello (worst mistake stopping) but music will always have a spot in the mind and soul and this price hear shows just a beautiful collaboration between a classical instrument and country absolutely superb
Goat Rodeo Sessions is a true masterpiece of an album. Four talented artists that came together with wonderful musical components added in. I love it at the end when Yo-Yo Ma says "This is... Magic". Exactly how I feel!
I just saw them live via video streaming tonight.....AMAZING!! The best musical experience of my life...absolutely to die for!! And I'm sorry, but Chris Thile is absolutely adorable. :)
All of these songs cause me to take a big deep breath at the end and wonder how all of the little wonderful points could come together so nicely to make such beautiful music
Simply beautiful. I cannot help but smile and let a joyful tear rundown my cheek as the magic flows. I truly hope that I can be fortunate enough someday to thank them for their gift to this world.
I've heard this on Pandora several times over the last few months, usually playing more in the background as I work. Each time, it has caught my attention and I've looked up from my work to see, what's this playing? I finally noticed this video on TH-cam, and played it, this time cranking up the volume and really immersing myself in it. This is such beautiful musical chemistry between these four performers. We are so fortunate to be able to experience something like this so easily in this day and age. It is indeed magic.
This is my favourite from the album. I feel like I'm floating in a cloud that is drifting through the sky. There is something unbelievably emotive and sexy about this piece. There is a lot to be said about an uncomplicated drone line, and Yo-Yo Ma does it beautifully, tentatively, and on the edge of going too far. I can't stop listening to this. It is brilliance.
All the accolades together are 0•01% of the how this makes us feel when going in touches a place otherwise untouchable making you feel magically unique. Thank You. Your the best shot. Never miss hitting with the very first wave 🌊 of what there will be an abundance of....
May this collection of pieces by this incredible duo never be lost in the annals of history. Like, let's hope Google's backing up their files appropriately and whatnot lol
Just wonderful…Chris Thile’s music has been such a positive part of my life. Whether he’s playing solo, with Nickel Creek, with The Punch Brothers (the absolute best group on the planet), or with Yo Yo Ma or whoever. He inspires me. As a musician and singer myself, my time has mostly past. Chris is a picture of what I once dreamed of being. He’s just amazing. Hopefully be lucky enough to be able to meet him one day. If not, I’ll go see him perform every opportunity I have, watch him on TH-cam, and listen to his recordings. 🎶 ⚾️ 😌
The brand is called Olson. I believe its James Taylor's guitar as these sessions are being performed at James Taylor's personal "barn studio." James Taylor exclusively plays Olson guitars and the luthier James Olson only makes so many guitars a year.
Saw the Goat Rodeo Sessions in Miami at the Falls AMC streaming, while the music was amazing the sound was absolutely abominable. It was like watching an old tv. Front end sound only that for the first 20 min, I had to strain to hear, and I was up say 15 rows from front. In spite of that, it was a great evening that could have been an earthshaking night if only..... I recanted this to a friend who said he saw an opera streamed at same theater and also was very very bad sound..... come on Miami

I just came across this stuff on Apple Music. I couldn't agree more. Just so cool.
When I watch videos like this I realize how lucky we are to be alive at the same time as the greatest bass player to have ever lived.
Fantastic comment. I completely agree!
Also the greatest mandolinist.
Yeah it's a serious dream team to be sure!
Beautiful
Fuckin hell right!
Getting to hear Edgar Meyer shine like this is nothing less than a visceral rush to the brain. What an amazing group of musicians.
Edgar's soloing reminds me of an old farm house, with a porch swing and swinging doors. If a farm house could make music it would sound like Edgar.
Exactly what I pictured. :)
3:00
When he pulls and bows the low E to get that deep ringing halfway through...makes my arm hair stand up everytime.
Yo-Yo Ma's smile at the end is showing true happiness...
It just goes to show you, everyday you can find something ugly, or something beautiful you didn't even know had happened. This is beautiful.
It fascinates me how Mr. Meyer seems to need to take a moment to process what just happened right after the song ends, almost like waking from a dream. If listening to this gives me goosebumps, I can only imagine how much more powerful it is to play in such an ensemble.
And Ma's smile at the end....
Pure emotion
I've watched this hundreds of times, Edgar still manages to give me chills.
I come back to this tune once in a while, and that bass solo always hits me hard.
When he plays that low D its like a freight train running through you !
same. it has literally made me cry so many times, for years lol - then the way it blends back in with the cello... gah... glorious
a good kind of freight train
@@thewaterwolfstudios7755I cry every time I hear this song. Such powerful stuff. 👌🏼
Watching their faces, so absorbed and into it! That bass solo! To see Chris not playing the mandolyn and everyone so brilliant! Thanks for the joy during these difficult times!
@YoYoMa I am well, thank you! I'm thrilled that you comment. You are a treasure, as is everyone involved here! Thank you for all that you do.

The bass solo made me cry... wow, I'm a mess...
it's ok. me too.
Edgar is a bad man for sure........This is music on the highest level.
Tears of deep musical joy. The same response.
haha, me too.... pretty much every single time for years lol
TheQueenLycan
Oh honey don't worry, it made me cry too

i just found this video and it is magic to my ears
Goat Rodeo Sessions is a true masterpiece of an album. Four talented artists that came together with wonderful musical components added in. I love it at the end when Yo-Yo Ma says "This is... Magic". Exactly how I feel!
I wish Edgar would've put that upright solo on the album. Completely astonishing
I know - how was it left off?
It was probably improvised on the spot.
I just saw them live via video streaming tonight.....AMAZING!! The best musical experience of my life...absolutely to die for!! And I'm sorry, but Chris Thile is absolutely adorable. :)
One good thing about this trying time is discovering such fabulously joyful and masterful music.
When YoYo orchestrates bluegrass, it plays languid and lush. This could be part of a soundtrack about life out in the big country ... LOVE this sound!
Per-COVID ..... how lucky we were ...... wonderful !
Storm clouds just parted, the sun shone brilliantly on the day, all and sundry were smiling and fortified to venture onward
The last two seconds of messing around between Chris Thile and Stuart Duncan is better than anything I'll ever come up with.
When I told my friends that they had to hear this unbelievably incredible bass solo...this isn't what they were expecting. #Shrug
Man this piece is just so damn powerful. Especially the bass solo. Love to see it
No person knows their instrument better than Edgar Meyer knows his bass.
Yo Yo is correct. This is magic.
Edgar Meyer is just absolutely devastating. In such a beautiful way.
God when Edgar bows the last note at 3:35 instant chills
If you watch very closely he actually plucks the E string with his left hand, that takes some finger strength for sure
that solo brings me to tears every single time. so frigging beautiful.
its so deep...
All of these songs cause me to take a big deep breath at the end and wonder how all of the little wonderful points could come together so nicely to make such beautiful music
That bass... pure magic. This is my new favorite album. Love every sound.❤️
After finding the album version on Apple Music and coming back to this recording five years later, I can say that this recording is much, much better!
The chord progression makes me think of the Beatles, but the time signature is such a refreshing element
Simply beautiful. I cannot help but smile and let a joyful tear rundown my cheek as the magic flows. I truly hope that I can be fortunate enough someday to thank them for their gift to this world.
My spirit absolutely floats during this song…. I love it so much!
I had no idea Thile was playing the guitar on this track until now. He's pretty good.
4:42 Now THERE's a respectful response to a remarkably-built piece of music.
I think this might be my favourite piece of music ever
I've heard this on Pandora several times over the last few months, usually playing more in the background as I work. Each time, it has caught my attention and I've looked up from my work to see, what's this playing?

He plays mandolin plenty! I love everything he does anyway.
edgars' facial expressions are so emotional, i love it!
I watch this video every day. Edgar's part really is magical.
This really makes me want to play some music.
Yo-Yo: "Hey, this is...magic" 4:56
It's amazing to me that humans can do both this, and war.
That bass solo was godly!!
The most beautiful song I have heard in a very long time
I had never seen Chris playing the guitar, no surprise that he is good on it. These are the Great Masters of our time.
if you have meet someone who has never felt music before play them this.

this is my absolute favorite of in the album followed by Less is Moi. this version is even more awesome to watch.
It's our pride. We are so proud of this art form, of what we can do, that we will do anything too keep others from taking it away.
They say that words can not define the true essence of life. You guys just proved that sound can. I am going to show this to the musicians in my life.
aaahh Edgar's soloing is so perfect and fulfilling to listen to... He always inspires me to practice.
No kidding! That's the juicy center of it all, isn't it?
It is the very reason why I always watch this full screen.
I'm convinced this is the best video on TH-cam. What a treasure.
I listen to death and black metal but this stuff is actual talent.
That was some bad ass shit!
They are all such immense musicians but I can never get over how freakin incredible Edgar Meyer is. His technique and his tone are awesome!
Just wonderful…Chris Thile’s music has been such a positive part of my life. @425mandilynn At the end, Yo-Yo is right: magic. Pure magic. :)
this is beauty.
i luv edgar meyer is the bomb oh i play bass to!!!!
this may be my favorite track of them all.....so so pretty, and so technically stunning
and unfortunately it's much easier to destroy than to create, especially something of such beauty and skill
this is beautiful.
The brand is called Olson. I believe its James Taylor's guitar as these sessions are being performed at James Taylor's personal "barn studio." James Taylor exclusively plays Olson guitars and the luthier James Olson only makes so many guitars a year.
This just blows me away
Incredible bass solo!
This is why I play double bass
Saw the Goat Rodeo Sessions in Miami at the Falls AMC streaming, while the music was amazing the sound was absolutely abominable. It was like watching an old tv.
