Yo- Yo Ma is one of the greatest cellists in history and always a pleasure and inspiration to listen to. I derive a lot of hope from listening to him talking and always enjoy his performances. What he said about culture and fear is spot on. Fear does indeed make us smaller.
"Fear makes us smaller. Culture makes us bigger. And that's what we need." Beautiful words. Thank you for always reminding us that abundance is all around us if we can just look beyond our own needs. And love this new interpretation of the suites!
Last night I had the privilege of seeing Ma perform the six suites at the Christchurch Town Hall as part of his first ever New Zealand visit - what an evening it was. The auditorium was absolutely stuffed with people and all of them were superbly played. What's more, he had a few things to say in-between his renditions; even though it was only the first time he'd performed here he clearly knew a lot about what this country has been through in the past few years. He dedicated his rendition of No. 3 to those who had contributed to the rebuild of the beloved building and No. 5 to anyone in the audience who felt hardened by a serious loss (perhaps with the 2011 earthquake or 2019 mosque attack in mind). At the end, he got a standing ovation, which is pretty rare when it comes to musical performances in NZ, and as an encore he revealed that he had established a firm partnership with local contemporary musician Marlon Williams - which is a good sign, because it opens up possibilities for the latter to start touring the rest of the world, where he is currently largely unknown - and they both performed a piece of country music! Definitely an evening I won't forget.
Yo-Yo Ma - THANK YOU for all the positive, hope, joy, music, kindness and compassion that you bring into the world. "Fear makes us smaller. Culture makes us bigger. And that's what we need." - so powerful!
For something you want to make accessible for everyone, its very difficult to get tickets. Here in Montreal the show has been sold out for almost a year. :(
The music is indeed accessible to everyone because millions of people can listen to the same recording at the same time, but unfortunaly they can't hear it live all at the same time.
I have been playing the cello for 8 years and you are my inspiration. I am in Suzuki book 8 and plan on completing the 10 books before my junior year of high school. I would love to meet you in person and play the cello with you. If you read this, please reply. Btw I was at your Bach suites concert in California recently
@YoYoMa hallo YoYo, thanks for reaching out to me. We have just moved to Dresden. Know why? Our Raphael made it to Dresdens special school for young musicians😊He loves his Cello so much, Just about practicing Haydn C for his upcoming exam in May. Just this morning we remembered the Meeting with you in Leipzig and talked about the deep and lasting impact on Raphael. Love and a warm hug for you from all of us
I am an unconditional fan. To me this man is a constant gift. He is both a very clever person and a gifted musician.
I agree I love him and he inspires me so much because I want to be a cellist and a pianist and I’m thirteen too.
Also did the man call him yo-yo at the beginning? I thought that was his artist name

Thank you Yo Yo Ma, because of you, I start to listen and love Bach and his six Cello Suites.:)
My hero is a great explorer, an incredible innovator and a brilliant artist. I'll adore him forever.
I grew up listening to his first version, I guess I'll take on his new one for further reflections. Thank you for making me discover and love music.

Yo Yo Ma’s sounds so much better than I actually imagined
You're right YoYoMa 😁
62 and his hair is still that dark. He shows that a lifetime spent in blissful music keeps the body and mind young.
A gifted legend... enough said.
Quando virá ao Brasil,YO Yo Má?
I have a signed photo of him on the wall. Does that tell you anything about my passion for his music?

Legend. He popularized the cello.
If you ignore Jacqueline du Pré, then yes - he did. One of his cellos, the Davidov Stradivarius, was hers.
@@TheStockwell I'm speaking of popularizing the cello amongst those who are not familiar with the classical world.
I so want to see him live here in boston
Me too..........I am unconditional fan.......
Woah dude..
They both are good.

Thank you so much.
Yo-yo Ma is so inspiring, not just about music, but about life. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he could be a world political leader?
