If you can see the Sustainiac’s circuit card in back, then there are a couple of tiny potentiometers on it for gain and feedback that you can adjust to get rid of that squeal - it wasn’t adjusted right at the factory if you hear that. It’s only a matter of time till I buy one after seeing your video. THANK YOU!!
Thank you for this. I think the JS guitars are very very underrated.... It's unfortunate that they don't get the glamour and the publicity which is associated with other signature models. They look great, they sound fantastic, and they're the best hybrid of vintage and modern specs on the market right now. (c shaped neck, medium output pickups, aero foil body, and the sustainiac is just a very good bonus!!) How I wish i could afford one of these bad boys!
You can darken that fretboard a lot by using that leather dye that Stew-Mac sells. I've done it to a bunch of guitars and its easy to do and works fantastic.
The Vaticants strikes again. Brilliant video. Feels like I own this. Goodies of the case and warm looking chrome. I had a 90’s jem with an ebony board. Didn’t think much of it at the time… I can see it looking better In this one. I have a jvm standard. Beautiful Les Paul.
Great video . And I agree with you about an Ebony fretboard suiting the chrome finish better. But even so, I have just placed a deposit for one , next delivery is in April. I have wanted one since I first saw Joe playing one in the early 90’s , so I am so excited . Love the sound of the sustainiac!
Great Review as usual Marko! Thanks! BTW, after watching your vid, I decided on getting a JS1CR30. I found one with the COA signed by Joe, Custom case, Custom back plate, etc.., perfect condition..
The only Ibanez I've lusted after is this and the smashed mirror iceman. You're right there's no info about these really. I only know them from back in the day magazines. My strat has really dark rosewood with one light streak starting on the 12th fret e string up to the neck. You can darken yours up. I'd be tempted
Awesome review of the Satch guitar. I have 2 old Jems and one Universe model, but always wanted a Chrome~Boy! That sustainer is amazing. Wish I could get one to add to my guitars. You're an amazing public speaker and also guitarist. I see great things in your future. Godspeed my friend!
This might piss the purists off, but I actually took off the sustainiac, because for me it wasn't worth taking the place of a really good neck pickup, I found it kind off gimmicky. I'd advise trying it first for some time, and then make your choice. If you still like it, then more power to you ;) Oh, and I refretted the neck too, with giant Jumbo Dunlop 6000, and now I freaking love this guitar, will never sell it !
Ebony for win but still sweet, the sustaniac would be great for looping doing ambient backgrounds drowned in fx double tracked with some lead. Seems fun
I wonder if Joe and Steve Vai prefer rose wood boards for sound quality as there have been very few ebony board Jems and Satch models, however I own a 90 th anniversary Satch model and the board is ebony.
You could use the tonal change you get when switching-on the Sustainiac when you're on the neck pickup, deliberately as a musically creative effect, so, I see it as not necessarily a bad thing.
It’s a shame that they didn’t use ebony for the fingerboard and he just said the same as I was typing this as ebony would have made a great contrast against the chrome finish
How do you maintain the chrome? I have a drumset with chrome hardware and the yearly cleaning is a pain in the a$$. Do they tell you how to maintain it or provide guidance on long term durability so you can prevent corrosion?
You got a little bit unfortunate with the lightness of the rosewood on this particular guitar. Mine was “medium dark”, but now looks almost black as ebony after a quick wipe over with a disposable Ernie Ball fretboard conditioner wipe that I found online.
Interesting to see you don't have the signed backplate with the little info printed on it. You are right - there's not a whole lot of info on it online as I also found when I was trying to find stuff around when I bought mine. You'd think there'd be more :P
Hi Marko, i see you do have good taste in guitars : i'm seriously considering buying this chrome boy, but i'm really wondering about the chrome finish ? does it wear out ? beacuse this has been plaguing almost every older models, and to me this is the most crucial point that could make me buy this new chrome boy ..or not ;) so, what is your feedback about that , since your video has been online for almost a year now, how is the chrome finish on your guitar ?
my last guitar was a js2000. amazing instrument. It was such a good all around guitar. My new guitar think im going for one of the schecters with a sustainiac though. Ebony fretboards. A couple of their models really remind me of an ibanez or JS so its a perfect balance of everything I like to shred on. The reaper in fact has a perfect layout and knob positions ect. Its perfect although I think their paint is kind of ugly I dont like gaudy over the top paint jobs. But I do like the sunvalley for the ascetics, just a strat style regular professional looking instrument. Just need to find one somewhere and try it out.
Very light coloured rosewood boards always make me think of a cheap guitar which I know this not,,and maybe they will take on board the comments as I know the look on the videos
I Kinda wonder minus the aesthetics and it’s a Satriani signature How much of the price is the name to the actual function woods circuitry And how much is paying for the name. Don’t get me wrong it looks and sounds amazing - I just go for function and playability over looks One added feature would have been scalloped 21-24 frets I’m guessing that’s Vai’s thing Also review in other guitar have said that if you sweat from lots of playing like me it could really ruin the finish on metallic paint
Oh yeah!! The ebony would have been killer!! Alder is not the best choice in my opinion. Too soft of a wood. The finish can only resist damage at the hardness of the surface it's on. I choose 2 piece maple, (maybe weight reduced).
Why put so much care into making it chrome and end up with a regular neck? Ebony or even a completely black synthetic material would have looked so much better.
Pretty serious orange peel texture in the chrome finish. I see it in all of the ad photos and eBAY auctions for these guitars. Really pathetic. Ibanez just cannot seem to do a proper chrome finish without issues. At a price of $5000 and three decades to perfect it, they really should get it right by now. And the fretboard ?... yeah, ebony is a must on a $5000 guitar. All of my Ibanez J custom S series guitars have ebony fretboards, as well as my Ibanez 90th Anniversary JS-HAM guitar. All of them cost thousands less than this JS1CR. So, why no ebony fretboard on this ridiculously expensive JS1CR ? I have screws on my Ibanez guitars rust just from humidity in the air, as well as corrosion on the more expensive frosted gold finish of the hardware on my J customs in places where skin never comes in contact. And ever since I bought one of my last Ibanez S series guitars new in 2008, which had hardware coated with the cosmo-chrome finish which completely deteriorated just while hanging on my display wall, I stopped purchasing Ibanez guitars altogether. It became obvious that Ibanez lost their concern and focus on quality. It's mostly about profit now. A real gamble to buy their products, because you are likely to end up with a guitar that has peeling or cracking finish on the body or corroding hardware that greatly knock down both the attractiveness and resale value of the guitar in the future. Depressing, because I really loved Ibanez guitars in the past.
well allow me to correct you. The orange peel is NOT in the chrome layer. It is special protective clear sprayed over to make the chrome more durable rather than just scratching like all the chrome models in the past. As a result, there is some light orange peel. Some worse than others but most pretty mild.
You're splitting hairs, but okay. The only point that's important is that the orange peel is very visible on the chrome finish as it comes from the factory, and it's permanent...there to stay. @@slickstrings
Hey Marko, thanks for the review. I’m following your channel since you did the PRS video, and I’m so glad that you’re reviewing Joe’s signature because indeed there’s not much out there about this model. I’m halfway through the review an loving it, my only complain though would be that it’s only a 360p resolution, which is a bummer for such a beautiful guitar. Any chance that you could upload a 720 or 1080 version later?
i am not that much pro too. But i have heard that Jems are like machine guns, Vai got it built for improved guitar neck access , and is easy to handle in respect to body dimensions. Your comment is 8 months old, so what did you buy?
A guitar is such a cheap string instrument. Even if this limited edition Chromeboy guitar is for sell in the market, the price will be just $10-20k, while a stradivarius violin used by professional player will be for at least $150k (a named one will be $100 - 500 million).
That rosewood fretboard ruins the whole thing. Always hated that ugly brown cheap look on guitars. Ebony or maple for me and ebony would have made this pop even more
Una delle chitarre più brutte che siano mai state create, e oltretutto costa pure un occhio della testa. Cioè non solo non vale quello che costa, ma fa anche cagare!!!
I don't understand why they used that particular fret board. Seems like this guitar is about $2000 overpriced. $3000 seems reasonable considering it being a signature model.
If you can see the Sustainiac’s circuit card in back, then there are a couple of tiny potentiometers on it for gain and feedback that you can adjust to get rid of that squeal - it wasn’t adjusted right at the factory if you hear that. Really appreciate the review! Finding information on these guitars is challenging to say the least! Thanks again!
Ur correct about the ebony ,the darker the better in this case

I agree when you talk about the ebony fingerboard. I never liked rosewood for necks anyway.
You can darken that fretboard a lot by using that leather dye that Stew-Mac sells. I've done it to a bunch of guitars and its easy to do and works fantastic.
who would do that to a production collectable?

Have you got it yet? I'm thinking seriously of getting one off Musician's Friend...Can you let me know if it's as awesome in real life?

Do these Chrome Boy guitars scratch easily? I saw a video of Joe Satriani holding one of these, and it looked like a mess.
I like the tone of Rosewood much better than ebony. Ebony tends to have a bit more bite and Rosewood is much more versatile and smooth sounding
un excelente video y super explicativo, saludos desde CHILE.
Thanks for the review! Can’t believe I’m just learning today that he uses sustain pickup🤦♂️

Cerulean only JS1CR30 has that commemorative backplate, limited edition. This is a JS1CR, the production model.
I'd kill for a Muscle Car Orange or Purple JS!

@Beppy holding up great. But as any guitar it’ll show a bit of wear over time. But it’s super cool!! ;)
Ive got the JS 1000 black pearl.... is it heavier in weight?
They should have done white liner in the case, that would really made the silver pop!

What radio system do you have?
Have you satched it yet…i mean scratched it?
