You explained the popping your heels off very well. It is like skateboarding an snowboarding when you're riding through dips in the terrain - you almost want to make your body "float" through them in order to put less pressure on the board. Science!

You will get less tired, if you continuously slalom - don't go in a straight line and if you are warmed up, you should feel like a feather on the board. and be able to hop without getting off. Really relaxed is the way to go.

I just finished a 10 mile single track ride, beautiful day, awesome ride! There is nothing like getting out in the woods and ripping. It's just the most amazing feeling. Off road Onewheel riding is hands down my favorite kind of ride. I think it makes you a better more intuitive rider, having to think on your feet. Every time you round a turn, looking at what's ahead and thinking how am I going to get down this. The more you do it your brain is making tons of light speed calculations, left of big root, over left rock right is too big, hit the middle root to jump over the rock. You get the picture. I feel so thankful during these stressful times to be able to got out and tear up the trails. Thanks Onewheel!

This kinda goes along with practicing bails. Practice the infamous "nosedive". No I don't mean push your board as fast as it goes til you get ejected off the front. Instead, find a steep hill(grass would be ideal) and try to climb it. Go with moderate speed but keep in mind that the first few times you will likely fall off. But try to keep the board going even when it kind of "gives out" on you. You'll feel the nose start to dip. Try to get get pressure back on the back foot and keep it up. This will help you in the long run and is a big help in keeping you from getting hurt.

Love that you pointed out not to “muscle” the board into going where you want. Riding a onewheel is all about respecting the board and its physics. Once you understand how it reacts to different things, and how you can react to its reactions, riding it will be more beautiful than you could have ever imagined

My best tip is to PRACTICE my house is up a mountain located on a small island in Spain called ibiza I had been bugging my parents for ages to get a onewheel saying that I could get all the way to school every morning anyway the day came when I got my onewheel and I was so stoked but i was scared of the mountain trail that was inbetween my house and my school so that morning when the day came and my parents told me hey , weren't you meant to use that to go to school and I replied with yes so I got up at 6 o clock in the morning take in mind that by car it takes 10 mins to get to my school and my school opens at 845 anyway I was pumped to get to school and I knew I was gonna get there but I thought it would take me 1 hour so I left at 745 and got there at 815 I remember practicing in the car park till the gates opened and on arrival looking at my watch and being astonished at how quick I had done the journey since practicing every day that trail ride I have done it in under 7 mins I allways wear trousers helmet goggles and a lightweight face mask and most importantly I have an absolute blast doing this ride and it pumps me up for every day at school

When riding blazing a new route of-road for the first time go slow and scout it out carefully, and as silly as it sounds treat all grassy areas as suspect until you've ridden over them. You would think the grass would be on the safer-side of terrain however it often holds hidden dangers, most notably soft squishy wet patches and holes/dips.
My only serious Onewheel injury (knock on wood) came from an unseen wet and squishy patch of grass. The board sunk right in and stopped dead. I did my usual run-off however because it was squishy wet grass I immediately slipped and slid. I caught myself but also dislocated my shoulder! The worst part was the fear of going to the ER during a COVID pandemic, but I managed to get it popped back in at home. My wife was not super happy. ;)

    Great advice and tips! 👏
One thing I would add is to “Look ahead”. Especially with off road riding, you need to keep your head up and steer with the eyes.
The more you look ahead, the more information you process; with more information you make better decisions.

I've found that momentum is usually a good friend on the trail. The board will have a hard time powering through rough terrain, sticks, roots, and stuff like that without the help of some momentum. Not necessarily going fast but just coming into things rolling. Don't take it any faster than you're comfortable with. Start with terrain you can handle and work up from there.

When riding offroad I've found the following helpful (especially while learning):
-Think of picking your line as a problem solving game, the path of least resistance may not be the most fun but its probably your safest bet.
-Deep carves & mud (or real loose ground) don't mix, Float light when you find yourself on sketchy surfaces
-Bring a plastic bag & pick up a few peices of trash along the way, that way when you get the inevitable dirty look from a biker or trail walker who may be questioning the legality of your 'motorized vehicle' on said trail at least you know in you heart you've left that place better than you found it.
... currently riding stock footpads offroad but I fingers crossed that will change thanks to this post🤞🏼

Just got my first OneWheel yesterday, the Pint! I’m 48 years old but, no exaggeration, I’ve been like a kid on Christmas Day since it got here. I’ve already got 10 miles on it.
I’ve taken a few short trips of about 3 miles each. I’m also practicing tight circles and figure 8s just like this video says to do. I have also found it helpful to practice going up and down driveway bumps to get the feel for what it’s like to take a very big bump. Since I plan to begin using my Pint to get to and from work (about 4.5 miles) when the quarantine is over, I’ve also been practicing riding with my full backpack (MacBook, iPad, camera gear, etc.). It’s a very different feel with that weight on my back, especially getting going. Once I’m up and cruising, it’s not much different.
Thanks for the tips and for making such an awesome product!

Having just come off the board pretty badly this week trail riding, I'd say it's really important to keep your eye on the terrain you're about to cross. It's easy to get distracted by pretty surroundings on a trail, but if you're going fast and not ready for a sharp dip in the trail or a big stone, you're coming off the board

Just did some onewheel trail riding today, and I think that an important tip is to first get comfortable with the board on pavement, then hit the trails, sand & grass which are all completely different beasts in their own right. Second, momentum is key, the slower you go, the harder it is to maintain balance; one wheels in motion, stay in motion. Ps, I’ve been looking into a grippy footpad, good to know that you guys at future motion recommend the ‘SURESTANCE’. Float on my friends... peace ✌🏽

My simple tip is to find old crappy roads to hone your skills on before trail riding. There is a neighborhood close to my own that has bigger trees with roots emerging in the asphalt. Great practice.

Speed is your friend! Riding fast helps smooth out some of the bumps that might normally make you really off balance. Staying loose is a necessity when going fast on trails! Practice practice practice. But ride confidently in fast and it will be smoother!

I think the de-weight advice is key. Took me a while to get the timing straight. Also, I use a neoprene knee brace on my back knee (old guy....yeah) but it helps during trail riding to keep steady, and minimizes how sore I am after.

You touched on this, but learning how to fall is critical. I ride a Pint to work (in dress clothes) often in the dark, up a hill that is large gravel for half the distance and farm pasture for the rest. There are rock outcroppings, holes, etc. I haven't put a hole in my dress pants or even grass stained them (yet!) because I have a ton of falling experience (I'm 55, and love skimboarding). I think that practicing how to fall (in your house on padding/on grass) is a great tip. Preventing a fall is first, of course, which is what this video is really about, but you will fall. Being prepared and doing it naturally is critical to avoiding injury.

Great stuff, happy to see I was already doing a ton of this. And defo practice slow speed, sharp turns. Did this one day, almost by accident. Tried to trace the work STOP that was painted on the road at a local slow intersection, for nearly an hour. Rode that whole charge as slow as possible, working on tight heel side and toe side turns. Noticed the next day that I was a lot more confident and comfortable on the board after the slow turns session. So, now I do that every couple of weeks to build up strength and confidence with the Pint under my feet. 400 miles in since November, and still getting better every day!

Going along with your trail awareness / de-weighting the board... I constantly look ahead and find my line that is best to avoid rocks and roots that are breaking the surface of the trail. Having a good line allows you to take the trail faster and spend less energy doing the de-weighting process.

Great selection of tips here. One I'd like to comment on is riding mode (XR/plus). You made a comment that you have to have loose ankles and this is totally correct. If you are riding a setting like mission or less, you are going to be fighting the board and your shins will be on FIRE! It's been my experience and most that I ride with to put the board in Delirium for trails, and Elevated is good too if there are some nice inclines. This really helps navigate those roots/rocks and bumps.
Oh yeah, elbow pads are a must on trails too. I'm typically going too fast to run out and I plan on rolling when I fall. Having a pad on that front elbow gives me a bit of confidence since I know that's that arm that's making contact first. Cheers

Great tipps, thanks! When I started going offroad what worked best for me was to really focus on bending my knees and staying low. For whatever reason that was really difficult for me.

My tip would be to let the board Eb and flow over the terrain and ALWAYS BRING WATER. trail riding is both awesome and tiring so hydration is key. Great video! 🙌

Amazing way of explaining. I am a relativity new rider and have about a total of 20 miles under my belt. Trails are really fun I have a bike trail in my neighborhood park that goes for miles and I ride there. It’s no real off road trail but really fun. I have to try my hands up. I’m also gonna work on my heel side turns. 👍

When riding off road learn to roll to break your fall for those really gnarly falls. For anyone thinking about purchasing a Onewheel definitely go for it I bought mine (a Pint) about a month ago and it is the best, tons of fun and definitely worth the money.
