  • Join me as I head behind the scenes at the Vale of Rheidol Railway, Aberystwyth, Wales as I see how you 'start' a steam engine, and how you keep one going up an 800ft climb! www.rheidolrailway.co.uk/

The narrow gauge locomotives were built in 1922-24, and weigh in at 29 tons. They are coal fired and smell fantastic. These are the trains that pass HubNut Manors. Until October at least, when I will move...
If you'd be interested in a HubNut meet at the railway, let me know in the comments below.

Steam engines do provide a remarkably physical connection to what's going on, don't they!
You were extremely lucky with Caleb and Jack - keen, ready and able to add to your explanations of everything! One of the very best steam train videos I've ever seen! With my background in the field, that's a very high compliment.

    Cracking stuff Ian!
I especially loved the explanations of how the thing worked and your responses:
Driver: "So you can see here how the split vacuum control valve holds back the steam pressure on the main upshaft intake"
    Ian: "Uhuh"
Driver: " Then we just ease up the condenser to engage the reverse decoupler spring which pressurises the low reverse jackshaft"
    Ian: "Mmm"
Driver: "And then we simply apply some advance to the low-pressure control valve so as we don't over-pressure the non-condensing re-gen cylinder"
Ian: "Yeeah.... So, which one makes the tea, again?"
Fabulous, and I was completely lost as well.

My Mums father was a boiler man on steamships in Liverpool after WW1. Mum told me he was the only man in their street with a job during the depression as you could not let the refractory boiler linings go cold or they cracked and the ship was scrap. So he went in every day and kept the boilers in the ships ticking over. All credit to the staff and volunteers at the Vale of Rheidol for looking after 'proper engineering' so beautifully. Great video !

Only just got a chance to watch this; fascinating, like yourself, didn't realise how much work went into running a steam train. We have a steam line on the Isle of Wight, I've been on it and recommend not sticking your head out of the window of the carriages as much soot abounds. Fantastic for teaching the young how we used to travel by train in the roaring 1920's and giving them engineering skills. Great stuff!

  • @huntsbychainsaw5986

I can definitely see the romance and the old world charm of the steam locomotive. That being said after watching the driver and fire man fight that engine all the way up and back down the rail line in an epic struggle. I can also see the reason diesel locomotives put the steam engines out to pasture.
Diesel locomotive: check the fluids, blow the cylinders out with a couple dry cranks, fire it up, do a quick inspection and go.
Steam locomotive: two hours or more of prep, cleaning, polishing, inspecting, fire building, etc. Then you can go get enough water for the first leg of your trip.
I can only imagine how much harder it must be to get a much larger, much heavier steam locomotive through a trip.

A rather marvellous day out there, how delightful to have such an experience right on your doorstep. a great insight into the workings off those lovely little trains I have a new found appreciation and respect for all the hard work that goes into keeping them running and such passion and dedication from all involved top job Ian.

Funnily enough, I made an unplanned visit to the station where we did the filming today, and met a lot of happy motorcyclists who were visiting because of the programme. Made their day!

Great video. I’m always impressed how immaculate the Vale of Rheidhol Railway always is. I volunteer at another Welsh railway and always a bit envious of them. Well worth a visit.

A joy to watch and so informative, I never realised that they had an external gearbox. Very impressed with those young engineers too.
