Serious comment - this was 28 years ago yet this show did more for gender equality than any of the contrived rubbish that is on mainstream television today. The women were fit, strong, feminine and got rough and physical to the standard of the men. Most games were ultra aggressive.
Likewise, look at Red Dwarf, one of the most perfect Sci-Fi comedy series which I just loved it all the while never have any knowledge or conception of what is 'racism' or all these political debates of modern times. Actually yeah, even here in Gladiators I remember Shadow was my favorite as a kid (before all the drugs scandals) where I never met anyone that looked like him or knew anything of the politics, I just thought he was so strong and cool and wanted to be like him.
Following her injury on Power Ball, Lisa Thompson was replaced by Jean Klenk, who was one of only two contenders who was a substitute who went on to win (the other being Dave Walters in the 1999 Champion of Champions).
And when you all are watching this 5th heat of the 2nd series 1993, after Powerball, Lisa Thompson had picked up a injury from the clash to Zodiac with an injured nose and if she couldn't compete 3 more events then there would be a substitute contender that she would be replaced by .... Jean Klenk, a HGV1 lorry driver from Hinckley, Leicestershire as a stand by.
Dean's Performance in the Eliminator just shows how everyone thought he was the crowd favourite throughout, and why Phil Norman had to pull out the Performance of His Life in order to defeat him in the Semi-Finals!
It seems as though some of Sachs' commentary was done in post, as he references the Netherlands-England match that was held on October 13, 1993 during the Suspension Bridge event. England lost the match 2-nil, which is why he made the "bad officiating" quip.
Even I felt that collusion when I heard the crash, that looked really painful, I'm surprised that in following series they didn't introduce body armour & neck braces for everyone
Lisa Thompson may very well be the unluckiest contender in the history of the programme. Not only was she the first contender to pull out of the competition due to injury, but her replacement, Jean Klenk, went on to win the entire series. Oh, and you misspelled a couple of the contender names in the summary. Jacqui's surname is "Thomson", not "Thompson", and Deano's real given name is "Deane", not "Dean". Just FYI.
OOH! Goodness, that collision was made even worse by the SOUND. I figure it was probably the helmets but still, it was quite a thud! I'm not surprised she got concussed. o.0;
21:53 "No it certainly didn't, You take a knock like that, You got to get up you got to keep on fighting" Words of encouragement from Lisa Thompson. A shame that she didn't get a chance to the final.
Was 59 seconds the "fastest ever" at the point? There was people who did Sub 60 seconds in Series 1, albeit on a different course. But that never seemed to be counted each Season, they always talked about legedns who did it super quick, not mentioning it was BEFORE the Eliminator changed for Series 5 and then again for Series 6.
I think the fastest time ever on this Eliminator course overall was 54 Seconds, I'm guessing they changed the course for Series 5 & 6 because the course being completed a bit too quickly for the producers liking
The series one course didn't have as many obstacles as the series two course. I'm noticing that it's taking contenders longer to complete this eliminator than it took them to complete the one from the first series.
4:13 Dean Cuts His Forehead Open On SKYTRAK During Training & They Didn't Think To Give The Contenders & Gladiators Goggles For That Event To Prevent It Happening Again
This sort of shows how unfair the competition is. Dean wasn't any better on Skytrack than John, in fact he was worse, but he gets the points because he got Trojan instead of Shadow. It's a flip of the coin. If he got Shadow his backpack would have exploded long before John's.
It is just a real shame that Lisa had to pull out of the competition due to an injury that she sustained to her cheekbone with Zodiac in Powerball after they had collided together and she could have gone on to become the overall ladies female champion if it had not been for her injury
I went and watched a semi final being recorded. Filming took an entire day as it took anywhere between 30-45 minutes to set up the games, depending on how much equipment was required. By the time the Eliminator came around all contestants would have had a lot of rest and recuperation.
@@STEJTHEGREATEST I also got to attend a taping once, as we won free tickets in the newspaper. The 6 Games as said are filmed throughout the day and at about 4pm the taping ends and everyone leaves, then an audience is brought back at 7pm and they filmed the eliminator (although our tickets didn't include that :( )
@@TheSteviebabes Honestly that's actually very impressive that they got all done in a single day. I once was in the audience for Who Wants to be a Millionaire Celebrity Special, and it took 6 hours to film that one hour long episode. And that didn't have all the equipment and set changing that Gladiators does.
Glasgow, Scotland! Why not just write Glasgow, O'Shea? You don't write Aylesbury, England or Kidderminster, England, or Bolton, England. Glasgow is still in the same country as the latter ones, the UK. I suspect more people know where Glasgow is on the map than those other ones and they just get their counties. Glasgow, Strathclyde might even have been OK or Glasgow, Lanarkshire.
I remember hearing that Wolf was in his 40s then, and thinking that was "sooo old" 😂😂 Jet always annoyed me, she was full of herself, flicking her hair about..it was a straggly mess 😂😂 Trojan was pointless, he looked the part but was really only good at Duel. I thought Lightning was the prettiest of them all.
Another awful performance from Zodiac. Did she ever win an event?! Surely the poorest Gladiator ever. Also, Jackie had a nightmare on thr Eliminator, struggled on every part of it, must have been tired or injured.
Granted she's nowhere near the likes of lightning, jet or nightshade I'd like to see how she would have done without that injury. Sometimes athletes take an injury that totally changes them.
0:01 Is probably one of the best intros and theme songs in the history of television!

No diversity quotas were used in the production of this show. The present day obsession with identity politics is just that: politics.
it was more than just gender equality, it was general equality at its best
14:24 Fantastic 90’s multi coloured shirt 👕 🥰
One of the best TV show themes song/opening credits ever!

The incident here didn't stop us playing Powerball with buckets and tennis balls when I was a kid. Screw you Health & Safety! :P
Jean was an absolute icon. Oldest woman in the competition and an HGV driver. She seemed to win the whole competition with very little fuss.
And when you all are watching this 5th heat of the 2nd series 1993, after Powerball, Lisa Thompson had picked up a injury from the clash to Zodiac with an injured nose and if she couldn't compete 3 more events then there would be a substitute contender that she would be replaced by .... Hey O'Shea, would you rank all the Gladiators best to worst please?! Would be Nightshade at the top for me and Zodiac the worst.

OUCH!
WHAT A COLLISION!
I FELT THAT IMPACT FROM JUST WATCHING IT!
💥😵💫🤕
To think the eventual winner never would have been on the show if it weren’t for that power ball collision
I really like the gladiator history segments.
Ouch that collision, I thought both of them were unconscious for a minute.

Hey, no spoilers!
Thanks for the spoiler jackass
I do remember watching Series 2 of Gladiators on Granada Plus in mid 1997

Lisa and Zodiac colliding on powerball looked brutal like more than just a cheekbone fracture brutal
Looked like they could've died without the helmets.
@@STEJTHEGREATEST sounds about right
And Jean's Cinderella story begins...
I love gladiators
16:37; Here's the collision, for those curious.
27:30 Panther looked so big and powerful next to Jean, and yet still somehow so shapely, svelte, and gracefully feminine.
Unbelievable looking woman
Perfect woman
Jean went on to be one of my favourite contestants

This was over 30 years old this one. It's about the best substitute than Steg O Saw Us in Robot Wars
45:24 Rick Keesbetter in contender attire in the background there, even though this wasn't his episode!!!!
Window cleaner against an army physical training instructor. Poor Jon. :(
This is a moment where she didn't see Zodiac. Until now 16:37

Does anyone find it rather unfair that the contenders who go out on injury aren't given the chance to try again the following year?
But Rowan Duxbury was allowed to come back the next year when she went out with food poisoning!!!!
@@STEJTHEGREATEST She did it outside competition though

You're right is Dr Tim from Heat 8
This Was The 5th Heat Where Zodiac Broke Her Cheekbone In Powerball 15:35 16:35
Sounds like a terrible injury for such a pretty lady. :(
They literally said on the episode that there was no break or fracture. Just a bit of swelling.
And a concussion, but that's separate.
To this day, I still can't believe Phil Norman beat Deane at the eliminator!!!!!
Phil and Deane are about the only 2 who made the cargo net look easy and effortless
Phil had an extra gear in him. Deane didn't. He would have beat 2 Scoops as well if he didn't mess up the Travelator.
Kinda questionable changing the contender, that means a much fresher body for the eliminator despite the small time advantage.
Remember this Hinckley 13 Black and Aylesbury Pincer.
15:37 This Was The Event Where Zodiac Suffered A Cheekbone Fracture
That looked like more than a cheekbone fracture to me.

19:40 Deane pushed Warrior over there!!!!
"I'm going back with a memory and i'll shall come back fit to try again next year believe me" Well it was 1994 and she wasn't returned.
