In the early 80's, I worked maintenance at a company that made interior and exterior doors. We collected our sawdust with a vacuum system that deposited it in overhead bins you could drive a truck under. We were lucky to get farmers to take it for animal bedding.
A few years later, I was working for a truck and trailer leasing company. One of our customers was a millwork company that leased special 45' van trailers that had ports on them so they could blow them full of sawdust. When they were filled, they were taken to another company that made wood products out of the sawdust. I do remember that the value of the sawdust was so low, it wasn't worth hauling it over 40 miles away from the millwork company.

Every night, the local pallet factory ships a 48' load of their sawdust up to an industry that further grinds it down in size, then presses it into sheet form, for sale as presswood panelling used for office furniture, K-mart-grade household furniture, etc. Throughout the day, the trailer gets advanced 5 or 6 feet as the sawdust piles up, then it's levelled out with a shovel or rake by the yard guy, the tarp gets rolled over and secured, then off it goes for that 3 hour tour, and the trailer gets end-dumped on a liftbed at the customers. I know down there in the Carolinas it's hard to fathom, but up here, somebody actually pays for the stuff.

  • @jenniferwhitewolf3784

Where I live, sawdust was once burned as waste. Today sawdust is a valued commodity, used to make pres-to logs, particle board, MDF board, charcoal briquettes, raw fiber for the paper undustry, or burned to produce steam for heat needed in drying kilns, or to generate electricity. Even small lumber mills have no sawdust waste.... its a by product to sell, with many willing buyers. they have hoppers that conveyer load trucks or rail cars.. Larger mills use a lot of their own sawdust internally for energy production.

Saw dust is very good for improve soil. You can mix it with different other stuff you need f e compost, manure, wood chips, straw together with infertile soil. Or use it as an additive if you have too wet compost.
And a small warning; Piles of sawdust can self-ignite. Higher they get it's a bigger chance they do and especially if it's compacted..

I looked into this a few years ago. The press to make the pellets is relatively cheap (as low as $1500). The sawdust needs to be dried to a fairly exact tolerance to make pellets. The machinery to process the sawdust prior to pressing is very expensive (starts at $150,000). Makes it tough to do on a small scale.

I don't know shit about dozing but it was fascinating watching how you maintained the slot. How you loaded the blade on a angle to suck it over and then kept it in the slot very cool. As someone who knows nothing about this I would have had the urge to remove that whole pile after you pushed it under the conveyer and I would have lost the slot right there. Not sure if this is basic stuff but I suspect there was a lot of subtle knowledge in this video. Anyway thanks for sharing I really enjoyed it.

Your sawmill buddy needs to talk to a marketing guy, sell "Gen-u-ine Carolina SawDust Pillows" in Std. , Queen & King size.
Look at that nutter from Minnesota selling $60. pillows with scrap foam inside, he's prolly a millionaire now.

After pushing all that you might have to change out your air filters along with the radiator and a good preasure washing.

Do they not sell it? Big money in sawdust these days, especially if they invest in a press and compress it into fuel pellets

Apparently the price is per bagged 1 ton is between $220 and $369. Yeah would take some effort but definitely cheaper than paying to have it moved.

Just a question, why doesn't he have someone make a blade or bucket for his loader? ( one that will slide on the forks) seems like it save him money. Just asking

Definitly Chris won't tell the sawmill owner, since Chris will lose his job doing it :-)

People in the UK buy this stuff (sawdust) for bedding down their animals (cattle & horses)

Not bashing Chris, he's doing a great job. Just wondering why this mill company doesn't do something useful with the dust. Unless it's too small of an amount to do anything commercially with.
Will make great soil once it's all decomposed

Question....why not a skid steer to aid in the removal of the pile around the shoot?? Or a front end loader?

Fine stuff like this? I've put horses on shavings before, but you need to be sure it's just softwood, some hardwoods are irritants.
