This reminds me of the times when working with an older guy in my younger years and he would have you doing something well beyond what you thought was ever needed. But just like this leak you found. It was something experience had seen before so rather than risk a problem down the road you go a little beyond now to not come back later. Great job of going to the lengths required to make it right. Now a memory you don’t forget either. Great content 👍
I've been around this stuff all my life and I must say, you are one of the most efficient operators that I've ever had the pleasure to watch. Every swing has its purpose. Usually when you see an operator pad up onto a mound of dirt to track out on it, they'll take 20 minutes to make it all perfect and that leads to alot of down time. I always throw a little on each side to keep my belly off the pike and get to it. The tracks will level the rest. Keep up the good work.
When the camera was mounted on the hood of the articulating truck looking backwards, it reminded me of the old days when you could ride in the back of a p/u truck going down the hi-way and not get the law on you for it. Guess that give away my age. Lol. Good video Chris!!
This video shows the reality of some projects. When you're building, you always think you have the excavations correct but sometimes 'mother nature' will throw you a curve ball! Thanks for sharing with us the corrective measures required to stop the leak. Great teamwork, very good video! I had an employee that would call that bulldozer a "Fat Alice"....lol.
Nonsense - if a relatively inexpensive geotech evaluation had been done (a few bore holes and some Proctor tests), it's highly likely they would have found that shale and planned for it. They've probably spent 10x the money doing this fix and it's still half-assed. But this is what hack grading contractors like this company do...cut corners and prey on ignorant clients. No reputable contractor would ever build a dam without a geotech evaluation and compaction testing to cover the potential liability of a failure.
Tracing a pond leak like this is very good educational and entertainment content. My sixth grader now has a real life example he shared with his classmates for earth science. Thank you!
Up here in Northwest NJ, the guys who put in septic systems love shale outcroppings. Send the water out and never stop. We have loads of that "Kittatinny Mountain Range" All shale, all the time. Nice work Chris.
I have the same issue in Central Jersey with the red and purple shale.... especially down by the Raitan river by New Brunswick...it's like thick blocks the size of a truck hood
Chris I know what I’m suggesting is expensive and may not be practical but would a permanent solution might be to pump a couple of feet of concrete into the trench right on top of the leaking area of fractured rock to seal it off before you backfill and compact with good dirt?
GB, you sir are very good at your job! I just wish you were closer cuz I truly need my land cleared around my lake! These local companies to me are nothing more than fly by nighters! lol.
Regarding sound issues, my GoPro does exactly the same, Tec/support cannot give me a reason so I just get on with life and do a voice over where needed... incredible technology but flawed. Thanks for the great channel Chris
Chris you have really lifted your TH-cam game. I don't know if you have put your fighting hat on with Andrew a thousand subscribers behind you (as I type this) but I have to say, you are making better videos than Andrew now, and uploading them at least twice as fast as him. For me it doesn't matter who has the most subscribers. Like I suspect most of your regular viewers, I watch a lot similar channels, but right now you are definitely the man. We thank you for the time and effort you put into your channel. It gives a lot of people a lot of pleasure.
I know this is a million dollar question but here goes.....does the vein of rock run parallel with the dam? With what you dug out and filled back in with clay stop the leak or will you have or need to dig down that far all the way across the dam to ensure you stop the seapage?
In his previous video on this pond he showed where the leak was flowing out behind the dam. It was just one spot indicating a perpendicular location. If it were parallel the entire back of the dam would be wet don't you think?
@@blurrylights6344 not necessary. Water will find ithe easier way out. Thus why I asked because if there is more of the "rock" down there then it will find the easiest way through the dam
@@jasonking2943 I think the two million dollar question is, regardless of the direction of the rock, since it is twelve feet below the pond why didn't the bentonite seal properly?
would like to give a pennies worth of thought? Have you tried placing lime and clay mix out in the water so it will seep through the shale layer and then will seal the fault line. Lime does work in dam leaks. Leave thought if have tried this method of repair. Lime is attracted to clay thus pulls it into water seepage areas.
As soon as I saw you scratching rock I knew that was more than likely where the pond was leaking. There isn’t a whole lot you can do about that except dig down below where it’s coming through the side and pack good clay in it. That rock could be 3 feet or 40 feet thick. Hopefully you’ve dug deep enough that you can stop the leak.
Just finished a damn leak 2 weeks ago. Come to find out the guy that dug it put the topsoil in the damn, then when it started decomposing it left a seep!
That’s the same thing happening in my pond. The dam is solid but is leaking through a spring that surfaces on the pond bottom. Thinking of hauling in clay or bentonite to seal it.
Great vid as always! Riveting! I'm a bit baffled though? How do you know how deep the layer of shale (that the water is coming through) is? You uncovered it, maybe dug a foot into it, and put clay on top, but if that's a 5 foot seam of shale, then won't the remaining 4 foot of shale still be passing water through? I sure hope you solved it. Just wondering how you can be sure the shale doesn't go deeper.
Tufty I’m pretty sure he said he dug a couple of feet below where the water was coming in. So he should have it plugged unless it just goes deeper into the rock. I really would have thought lining the bottom of the pond with good dirt would have done the trick but I guess not. I bet one thing is for sure he will give it his all to try to fix it!
Its amazing how well the engine brake works in a Moxie.... just as good if not better than a road truck.... I ran a Deere and it about damn tossed you in to the windshield.
I hope that fixes it. If this is on your dime I know you do to. Your right on the path of the water. I think it was filtering through that rock formation. Man I can't believe you walked that machine over that ridge. I know you know your limitations but that would have scared the crap out of me.........

They make a joke about safety legislators wanting to put handbrakes on these machines. th-cam.com/video/G4tM6jfdoxQ/w-d-xo.html
Most machines like this, boom lifts, etc, have hydraulic motors on each track or wheel, and built into the motor is a pressure-released brake, sometimes just a pawl or cog, other times a spring-applied multiple-disc brake, built into the hydraulic motor case. The spring applies it, and it isn't released until enough hydraulic pressure is applied to turn the motor. So as soon as you let off the drive, it locks the brake, sometimes quite violently on some machines lol So there is not only no way to manually apply the brake, there is no way to release the brake and coast, only driving under power is possible. Most machines have a way to disengage the brake, normally involving removing a bolt on the motor housing, or putting a bolt into a hole that releases the spring, so that a dead machine can be towed, but then it's freewheeling and can be scary if you aren't towing it properly lol

I think the key phrase in your question is "the whole pond". He does say in the previous video that they used bentonite on the bottom and when that didn't work added another 18 inches of clay over the bentonite on the bottom. Prior to the pond being dug this vein of rock may have been closer to the surface ground which, after the pond was dug, would mean it is now open in the side of the pond, then takes some deep bends to 12 feet below. I don't know if that is geologically possible in that area so my theory involves a whole bunch of ifs. I am an amateur . Lol!
That’s a lot of water in a short amount of time wouldn’t you have to go and redo the bottom of the pond to prevent it from coming out or just doing that is fine I would figure even with that fixed it would travel around to a different location but other then that another amazing job keep it up and keep them coming
I think in the video before he said they already put bentonite all over the bottom, and then when that didn't work put in another clay lining. Apparently that seam tied in somewhere else not covered by the clay, or it wasn't working. Why that would fail, no idea, I'm not a builder. Maybe Chris can explain what was up :)
2xKTfc yea he did but it’s still leaking so that tells me either it’s not working or the pond is leaking somewhere else this is not my cup of tea I’m a heavy duty diesel mechanic lol

Good memories, sounds like you had a good dad. Mine died when I was 8 and I cant remember much. Anyway, I have a little Kubota BX 23s and was thinking of putting in a frog pond.
If all the slate from the spot that the seep starts isn't removed and then filled with clay, I don't see the leak stopping. If there is a way, the water will find a way around.
It only makes sense to take that repair to a certain extent. If it fails the pond is small enough it would be more cost effective to dredge it and line the bottom

OK so apparently the go Pro has a standby mode. Now what happens with this is it will appear that it is recording, but it doesn’t have sound because what you’re supposed to do at that point is plug a pair of headphones in so you can adjust how loud or how quiet the sound is supposed to be, then if you hit record again you should get sound. If this happens to you while you’re on site and you don’t have time to press record a second time I would suggest purchasing a medium range voice recorder. This way you will have a fail safe. If you have any questions about which one to purchase respond to this comment and I will tell you which models can handle heavy equipment the best. By the way I have been recording heavy equipment since I was about seven or eight years old. I was actually hoping that maybe one day I could come on one of your sites and record your excavator, and what ever other equipment is running that day from the outside.
I'm pretty sure that the audio pixies in your camera are drunk. Sober those little bastards up and the sound should be good. 😨 How uncommon is that rogue slate vein when you are digging a pond? I am curious why the bentonite didn't seal the water from getting down to the vein. Weird. But you did find it and fixed it. Yay! Thanks.
Have a friend that had shale rock in his pond. After digging fractured shale. He drained the pond and treateded it with dimetuitous earth and stopped the leak
I remember a job in mass on the coast that added a month because we couldn't blast and had to hammer and hydro fracture. Even rented the biggest cat and hammer we could cause we were just melting hammer pins with ours. Just for a foundation
Yeah, we New Engladahs aren't smart enough to live where the digging is easier. But we get great seafood and maple syrup (not at the same time), I guess that makes up for it 😏
Too bad you didn't find gold. That pond is a mess, to who ever built it to begin with.Question is how deep would someone have to go to rid it of shale?
That shale makes sense. When you said it was down 1 foot with no visible leaks I was wondering if it was so.ehow refilling an aqua firm. Apparently, partially yes. Love your videos. 💚

Keep up the good work. Good job finding it
Trooper Hoover strikes again! Keep up the good work chris
Terre Haute ,Indiana trooper Hoover ?
warren michael yes
well hell, i must have missed it in the video. Why was Trooper Hoover brought up in the comment ? LOL I recognized the name from tractor times videos but i didnt catch in this video if it was referenced,,,I was half listening as i watched.
warren michael when Chris was driving the haul on the street. We all give Hoover a hard time and he dishes it right back lol
I went back and watched it and heard the close your eyes, i got it now ! LOL I haul a bunch of oversize through that scale but never get messed with but i have Hoovers name in my head in case i get puled out back ,,,HAHA Them big fiberglass swimming pools
It is simply amazing how much power is flowing through these hydraulic rubber hoses of a modern excavator
Not (only) rubber!
Do you own all this equipment or rent it?
ENJOYED WATCHING THE VIDEO CHRIS 😊
Does this tractor regen.
Found the leek thats solves the problem Chris, much digging Tim with the doder....😎👌✌
You knew you found the Leak when you started pulling out Buckets of Gravel next to the Water. 👍
Is that a short stick on the 250 or standard size?
What about using hydraulic concrete to seal the fractured rock? Or better a bentonite slurry.
Shale is brittle, can't hold the weight, even if it plugged it would rot out a new place, who put dad burn shale under my dam, curse you planet!
What was all that stuff in the bottom of the pond?
Bentonite
Chris why aren't you using the 330 Volvo to load the dirt?
Same size bucket as his excavator.
Diggin's like a box o' chocolates
Question: is the yellow dump truck, road capable or special permit, asking for a friend? Enjoying your videos.👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
How many yards dose the Volvo hold
around 20 yards I figured on #3000 cy
its a 30 ton capacity truck so depending on density of soil, 20-24 cubic yards, ish
I run end dump and Transfer out here but never had the chance to operate one I want to some day
it'll wash off, turned into a major excavation, could that be "grouted" to prevent the weeping
Just a kid at heart with a conscience
How uncommon is that rogue slate vein when you are digging a pond? I am curious why the bentonite didn't seal the water from getting down to the vein. Weird.
But you did find it and fixed it. Yay!
Thanks.
How do u charge for this? It wasn’t your fault that 12’ below your work was bad ground??
Time/ materials
Sitting here listening to Phil Dirt and the Dozers while watching your video! Thought it was appropriate!!
I would suggest having a separate audio recording device, maybe even as your main audio source with the camera audio as the backup.
Do you use P mode at all or does it use too much fuel
Dumper truck sounds ace :o)
Have a friend that had shale rock in his pond. After digging fractured shale. He drained the pond and treateded it with dimetuitous earth and stopped the leak
I wonder how many tons of dirt is moved in the world in 24 hours lol
Enjoyed the video, Chris, it was very good.
You have. Easy diving all the time come to new hampshire and try to dig like that been. Watching you for 3 years and never seem any rock
Jake Schisler
Like he said, its a hole in the pond, gotta plug that one to prevent it getting down to shale
That shale makes sense. When you said it was down 1 foot with no visible leaks I was wondering if it was so.ehow refilling an aqua firm. Apparently, partially yes.
Love your videos. 💚
Chris, At 26:30 is that like the ''fabled'' Red Georgia Clay of at least one pop song?
Close you're eyes "officer Hoover"nothing to see here😂😂
I wonder when he was a child if he ever played any video games.. he's so smooth with the controls..
That pond was flood right?
Just got my bright green yellow shirt yesterday...great quality....
