- Russia has once again extended the pre-trial detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, 32, who was arrested last year on espionage charges.
The court ordered that his detention be extended until 30 March which means the Wall Street Journal reporter will spend more than one year behind bars as he awaits trial.
The US will announce sanctions against Russia over the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the two-year Ukraine war, President Joe Biden said.
Mr Gershkovich, his newspaper, and the US deny the espionage charges.
US officials have called for his immediate release.

From the looks of these Russian prisoners always smiling it seems that they actually drugged with some sort of antidepressants to make them look like they're feeling ok and aren't scared or tired when the Russians know they're going in front of cameras.
Antidepressants are not given in Russian prisons; on the contrary, people are artificially plunged into depression. Their strange and seemingly inappropriate smiles are a defensive reaction of the psyche.
Those videos are from propaganda channels only where they intentionally cut the sequences where the look the way they want them to portrait.
