This is one of the 4 main routes of the 400-series highways as well as 400, 417 and QEW. This is a special one and here's my source: 401 is the backbone of southern Ontario from the Michigan border near Windsor via the GTA to the Quebec border continuing Autoroute 20 towards Montreal, parallel to the northern shore of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River. It is the longest 400-series highway spanning 828 km. Despite being the busiest highway of the continent of North America (in front of Ontario Highway 427 and Interstate 405 in California), it's so populated in the GTA most of the time and even in the 44 km express lanes and 9.6 km express lanes as well. 401 was widened because of increasing population and even the time they added express lanes.
do your home work dude, it is not the busiest you been to la lately toronto is a joke compared to la wear you have to wake up at 330 am to do a daily commute across town the distance of say morning side rd to dixie rd belive it, la traffic dont let up. they have so many hwys and options you can always take the bye past around but that adds a extra 60 miles on your trip to cross town thats 1 hr people who can afford it take the helicpter service to work , dont complain and wine at least the 401 moves, la traffic dont , for t.o to be a world class city you gonna need more hwys that a no brainer. yo all build the 407 and make it the most expensive toll rd in the world duh its not even canadian owned the hwy system has not been updated the same ways you build tunnels for subways you can build a tunnel under the lake and a proper bypass around the city. even winniepeg has a bye pass so does calgary and edmonton time to get with the programe and build the cityy some decent hwys not that goat trilal you call the 12 lanes to nowere .
The 401 acts as an intercity and an international highway tourists driving from Michigan to Toronto or further east can only use the the 401. While people who call Toronto home also must use the 401 as part of their daily commute the highway is is usually bumper to bumper and usually has hundreds of accidents per day. If this was TH-cam video was filmed in fall 2019 the driver would have made it 20 feet in the 45 min video

Curious to know how busy it's been since March 2020. Still a main artery for transport trucks.

I think in the 50's hwy 401 had only 2 lanes in each direction.
