    If you’ve never used an air filter these are great. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_dppjvjF8BYEmPSDTcgCUdRsgWYLXNHN I ended up with three after starting out with one. The noise level depends on the 1-3 settings with how hard you want the machine to work. You can also upgrade the filters and get one better for pet hair and smells which is a must have in my home. I noticed the air seemed lighter and easier to breathe when running the machine for the first time. Works great every time. Highly recommended!

    I just bought the Winix 5300-2. It's nice and quiet and pushes a lot of air. I had a musty odor in the bathroom, very high humidity in my house and the Winix cleared it up in about an hour.
    I bought it at a liquidator for $80. I'd beware of the GermGuardian especially that model shown, I read reviews on Amazon that a couple people said they smelled smoke coming from it. Do your own research.

    Just bought the Winix 5300-2 a week ago before finding this vid, and I agree! I was looking at the new air purifiers from Filetret at Walmart, and while these seem like they would work well, I wanted to look around before making a decision. I then found the Winix on Amazon for not only cheaper, but better performanc, and the added Plasmawave feature was a steal. So far its been great! Will be looking into buying another or two for our apartment, they just are too good of a deal to pass up. I was looking into larger purifiers, but the price jumps up way more than I want to pay.

    I have a 550 sq. ft. living room with 9 ft. ceilings. Wouldn't a cubic feet measurement be more helpful as to effective an air purifier would be?

    • @YourBestDigs
      @YourBestDigs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I really wish we lived in a world where everyone was this thorough. :)
      The clean air deliver rate (CADR) is actually cubic feet per minute where the filter effectively removed 80% or more of the contaminant (tested for smoke, pollen and dust). Smoke is the result most often used for recommendations.
      So if you know the actual volume of your room, forget about square feet and divide that number by the CADR and see how many minutes it takes for the machine to filter an equivalent volume of air.
      The recommendation guideline (square feet * .6 to find an appropriate CADR for a room with an 8-foot ceiling) is based the expectation that you can actually get all your room air through the filter four times per hour. But remember that dead areas in air circulation can trap dust while the filter draws free-flowing air from somewhere else.

    I've been using the small Honeywell one for a few months now. I honestly did not notice any difference in my allergies. I use it in my bedroom and I like to sleep in complete darkness. 1st problem, when my cats jump on it the settings get messed around (Speed change, lights turn back on). 2nd, the light button stopped working so the light could not be turned off at all! I contacted Honeywell, and after two months I finally received my replacement. Less than a month later and the light button is broken again on this model. :( Hoping I can send this one back for a return, so here I am researching for a different brand.

      Check out this update in our written post: www.yourbestdigs.com/reviews/the-best-air-purifier/#covid-19
      Short answer: soap is the best defense.
      We still don't know enough about SARS-CoV-2 to say if a HEPA filter is worth it; for more contagious viruses like measles the small number of virus bodies that slip through are enough to be a risk. Negative airflow (sucking the air out of a room and replacing with outside air) is the strategy used for hospitals, but if you can't do that finding a way to cross-ventilate through open windows may help.

    May be unhealthy
    Air purifiers with ionizers are tested to not exceed 50 ppb of generated ozone, they are not tested to produce 0 ppb. Ozone is unhealthy.
    In shopping for an air purifier I found various forms of misleading information regarding one stage of filtering called ionizing (plasma, ion). It is true that if you create an intense electrical field you can strip electrons of particles such as dust to make the dust electrically charged and therefore be attracted to an anode plate be collected instead of in the floating in the air. This same process may also kill bacteria and mold. But it is also true that the same mechanism strips electrons off of gasses such as oxygen and nitrogen. When oxygen is affected by the ionizer it becomes ozone. Ozone is a very unstable, highly-reactive, oxidizer. Think of it as a free-radical that wants to bond with something and most likely make something bad or at least unintended. It is toxic. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) limits for ozone emission concentration is 0.050 parts per million or better yet 50 parts per billion. For every billion molecules or air you are not allowed to exceed 50 molecules of ozone. That is a very, very, very small amount.
    It would seem like the fact that CARB has set this limit then everything should be ok. Well, the irritating ingredient in smog is ozone. On smoggy days ozone levels often exceed 100 ppm. During 2017 in Southern California ozone exceeded 100 ppb for 145 days in a row. Smog related ozone tends to drop every night. But if you are using an ionizer 24/7 and add its ozone output to the background levels of ozone you could create a real health hazard. The NIOSH recommended exposure limit for ozone is 100 ppb. According to NIOSH, Ozone levels of 500 ppb or higher are considered immediately dangerous to life or health.
    For filtering a mechanical filter is safer - coarse washable pre-filter, heap filter, and activated carbon are all you really need.

      I had a Holmes tower unit from Target that was so loud I could not be in the room with in running on any speed but low, then I saw the 5300-2 the Winix on highest speed is just barely louder than the Holmes on low. Donated the Holmes to the local Vets Society with a fresh set of filters and the manual. My Winix runs 24/7and after a year I still love it. My wife says the whole house smells cleaner, less allergy problems and since it is not in the bedroom at night I put it in manual on the highest speed to cycle the whole house.

    The CADR ratings are NOT reliable and you should not base a decision on them. And just because a unit says "HEPA" rated on the box does NOT mean it actually performs at a HEPA Level. MOST air purifiers do NOT actually perform at a HEPA level. These 3 units are good units for smaller spaces depending on what your needs are... but they are far from being considered GREAT filtration solutions, IMO.

    • @YourBestDigs
      @YourBestDigs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We specifically avoided models like Molekule that don't list airflow specifications.
      Trapping particles isn't everything, but it's what air purifiers are best at. Trapping VOCs and killing organisms is a priority for some people, but it quickly became clear to us that you need industrial-size machines with giant carbon filters to really remove VOCs, and trapping floating virus bodies is not the most efficient way for most people to prevent infection.

  • @kool_1859
    @kool_1859 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How is this compared to Dyson Charcoal filters?

    • @YourBestDigs
      @YourBestDigs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't tested VOC (fume) removal performance, since it's unlikely to be effective with anything short of a giant industrial-grade purifier with a very large filter. Tests we've read that check the Dyson filters show that they're about what you'd expect: not very good at actually removing fumes from the air. Dyson machines are expensive and sacrifice air cleaning speed for quiet operation, so we don't consider them a good value.

    Just read this comment on amazon and wonder whats your opinion about that one.. I know its long but I would really appreciate if you answer. thanks a lot.
    I bought this in 2018 excited about this new "plasmawave" technology. For the first 9 months or so this thing seemed to work great, the air always smelled fresh/clean and my lungs felt quite good. However, I noticed after a while that as soon as the carbon filter had been exhausted, the air was noticeably more stale as if though the purifier was not "purifying" the air. Around this same time and till now, I've experienced what I thought were allergies (constant slight congestion/irritation in the lungs and sinuses). Finally just before tossing this thing, I decided to take it apart. Man was I shocked. First of all my unit appears to have been taken apart previously as you can see in one of the pics, some of the clips internally are broken (this was the first time I ever opened it up). Next, we get to the "plasmawave" bit of the filter. Which is nothing more than two tufts of carbon fiber needles attached to a crappy high voltage power supply which in turn generates a coronal discharge and ozone/hydroxyl radicals. Now this in and of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. However notice that the fibers are covered in dust, this renders them useless as the high voltage discharge happens at the very tip of the nano-needle/fiber. Second notice how many have become dislodged from their tufts and are static clinging to the plastic. How many of these have I actually inhaled as they became airborne from the filter? Is this the cause of my lung irritation? Do I now have carbon fibers embedded in my lungs? Time will tell. My advice to you all is to just stick to what works, HEPA filters and UV lights. Some ozone is far better than whatever horrid cancer awaits my future thanks to these lovely fibers...

      Fortunately, they're all good with pet hair and dander that's floating in the air, so long as you get something that's the right size for your room. Sadly, pet hair sticks well to surfaces, so you still need to vacuum.

    Don't quote EPA study without any background information on why indoor air quality is 2~5 times higher than outside air. It's not only the particles, but it's also toxic gas that's emitted from things inside your home. Air purifier is not going to help in that area. Please do not mis-inform people this way. If you haven't done enough study don't quote. you STILL have to open the window and circulate the outside air EVEN if you have the best air purifier in the world.

      We wrote about this in our full post here: www.yourbestdigs.com/reviews/the-best-air-purifier/#what-can-they-do
      We consulted with the California Air Resources Board when we were writing this review, and we came to the conclusion that HEPA-class filters are effective at helping people who have problems with air quality related to smog, cooking, candles, pets, and pollen (statistically those are the most significant problems with indoor air quality.)
      Opening a window is a catch-22 if you live in a place where outdoor air quality is worse than indoor (like California's central valley.)
      You're right, though, filtering definitely isn't a cure-all. VOCs can't be effectively captured by anything other than a gigantic carbon filter, and the cost just isn't worth it for most people.

    Thank you so much for this review, I hope they are legit. I spend way too much time researching stuff I want to buy rather than just buying it. I know it's a good practice, but I'd rather spend my time doing something else because I don't have much time in a day to myself. So thanks a bunch for doing this as it helps me say "Okay now I'm just gonna buy the Winix instead of figuring out why I wanna buy that" so you saved me a bunch of time. My only problem with reviews are you never know if a company gave a review TH-cam page some money to say "Hey, make this review video but make it seem like ours is the best" and this doesn't seem like the case. I will be finding out shortly once my Winix comes in, haha. Thanks again.

    The stupid winix just blows air, it doesn't have much suction to pull air into the filter. It's a piece of shit. For those that have one, click like if you agree. turn that piece of shit full blast and pull the front cover off. Even with a full blast, barely any suction happens.

    Also can you review the Levoit 200 or another model? This is the one I bought and I bought it because some reviews said it is good at catching animal hair in the air and it said it only uses about 6 dollars in electricity a year. I was going to buy one with washable filter to save money but I wanted a Hepa filter and when I say it used so little electricity I bought it because it was cheaper in cost and I can run it all day and not use much money and it helps me to buy the filters when I need them. I'm not sure it it's working good though. I only use it in a small bedroom on a table. But I saw you showed one of the Levoit air purifiers and I thought you were going to review it more. I have bought three air purifiers so far and two I don't use and they do not work good and just sitting like a pile of junk. This one I have been using but I feel it is not catching enough

    • @YourBestDigs
      @YourBestDigs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most air purifiers use good filters, but the amount of air they can move limits how effective they can be in bigger rooms.
      Levoit lists the Vista 200 as suited for rooms "rooms up to 161 ft²", but from googling other reviews it looks like Levoit only claims it only moves 40-50 CFM of clean air delivery rate.
      In most houses, you need to move all the room air through the filter four times or more per hour before you can improve indoor air quality vs outside air. That's where the CADR CFM*1.6 standard calculation comes from.
      If your windows are sealed tight, the Levoit might be quick enough to be effective in your living room, but the standard 4x-air-change-per-hour will only be true up a 93 square foot room.

    i read the article on your website and i consider myself lucky to have found your channel while i was looking for an air purifier. During the last few months i remember seeing those Dyson air purifiers everywhere in shops, they really have a beautiful design, very different from everybody else, and i was about to buy one of those.
    Most reviews made by youtube channels mention pretty much nothing about the technical features, which is fundamental when reviewing something such as an air purifier. Most reviews keep talking about the proprietary technologies, the cool lcd screen and the phone app, but i came to realize it's mostly hype. Luckily i found channels like this that talk about what really matters in an air purifier, and instead of the Dyson i bought a Coway Mighty. The only thing i regret about buying the Coway is the design, i really would have liked to have an air purifier for my home that looked as cool as the Dyson one.

    Just buy HEPA filter yourself
    They are quite cheap, about $15-30
    Buy MERV 11 (rating for how the smallest particle it can capture)
    Don’t buy any high MERVs cause they make it harder for air to pass through and are therefore less efficient

      We looked into this, but all the good builds we found on TH-cam looked more expensive than $140 anyhow. You'd also have no idea how well the system will work unless you're very carefully selecting a fan that makes the right amount of pressure. • @rickthreadgill3382
    @rickthreadgill3382 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice job evaluating these, except I'm not sure you considered reliability. Those Winix purifiers seem to have an unacceptable failure rate based on many user reviews and based on friends' experience. Quiet, yes, at first but fan goes wonky and gets noisy after a while. Returning under warranty is a pain, especially when purchased over the internet which is your link and your click-through revenue. If I were to get this, I'd buy it at Costco, or someplace where returns don't require shipping. Also you seem to be comparing street prices to retail prices in some cases and no one pays retail price. Still, a lot of good info here, especially the smoke and dust testing. I hate it when companies tout their HEPA but are leaky defeating the effectiveness.

    • @YourBestDigs
      @YourBestDigs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I checked long-term prices with Camelcamelcamel at the time of review, definitely there are fluctuations but the Winix is consistently a better buy (same for filters).
      I didn't see an unusual failure rate when checking reviews, far more people complaining about the nature of the product ("doesn't get rid of smells") than actual failures. The unit we bought hasn't given any trouble after 10 months.

You've conveniently omitted Oransi, Alen, Molekule, Rabbit Air and IQ-Air, 5 of the best air purifiers on the market. I have been researching air purifiers for my bedroom. Currently I have the Winix C545 in my home. When talking to a Winix Customer Services person, I was told the C545 is made exclusively for Costco and they don't have another purifier that they sell to anyone that is the same as that unit. However, I have seen 2-3 with the same specs and controls that appear to be identical to it. Possibly the Customer Services rep is not as familiar with the Winix line as they should be.
    So far I am impressed with he units ability to trap dust, which is one of the reasons I need an air purifier. The other reason is my nose is typically stuffed up when I wake up in the morning. So far the air purifier is not resolving that issue. So I'm continuing to test other products.
    I noticed you didn't mention BlueAir, Rabbit Air or Aqualite-US as alternative air purifiers. Is there a reason they were not mentioned or tested (cost, etc.). From my initial investigations they appear to be the top of the line units. In particular Aqualite-US, which has the FDA, CDC backing their result and NASA, which worked with them to develop some of their technology.
    Finally, thank you for putting together an excellent review of the units in the presentation.

      Very few purifiers dump enough ozone into the air to cause problems nowadays. the California air resources board certifies which models are good enough, and which ones should be avoided: www.arb.ca.gov/research/indoor/ozone.htm
      Of the modes we picked that include ionizers, they can all be turned off if you're sensitive to the small amounts of ozone that escape. And our top pick is still less expensive than comparable mechanical-filter-only models.

      Kevin Santos I turned it off on the Winix, but it still felt the same, I would avoid it altogether. I ended up returning it after having it on for a couple of hours. I literally had to go outside the house because I had trouble breathing.
      I ended up buying a Levoit purifier. Non of their air purifiers generate ozone, and it works great. Their are other brands like IQ air, Blue air, and Austin air that are supposed to be really good as well, but are much more expensive.
      Main point, do not buy an air purifier with a UV-C light, or an ionizer, not good.👍

    • @YourBestDigs
      @YourBestDigs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an unusual reaction, did you notice any other smells?
      The California air resources board tests air purifiers: ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/air-cleaners-ozone-products/california-certified-air-cleaning-devices
      and the Winix emits less than 0.050 parts per million, and that's only with the feature turned on. (Same certification for Coway and GermGuardian, as well as the Dyson.)
      It would definitely be worth calling Winix about this result, as it's not functioning normally if it generates that much Ozone.
