Excellent job on explaining air dispersion and dispelling the "clean air bubble" myth. This channel is one of the best resources for people like me who are in the market for air purifiers. Your videos are very detailed, with in depth analysis of pros and cons. Many of the other "top air purifiers of 20XX" videos on TH-cam are just stitches of various marketing material with no added insight.
Good advice. Bought 5500-2 Winix and at some point after 6 mo it began to make a ticking sound that DROVE ME CRAZY by it’s 10th month and i couldn’t sleep or read. Yesterday I went to Home Depot and bought a new, bigger white Winix D-450 and it is heavenly! Then I saw a video to wash the carbon filter! So ON THE FIRST Winix 5500, I washed the carbon filter. I put it back in when dry and the ticking STOPPED 😳 so I put it in the open space of dining/ living/kitchen area and that little machine took out the smell of the dogs kennel, dirty dishes, and trash in a few hours. My house smells and feels AMAZING. First day in months with NO sneezing and headache. Thank You Lord. 😅
Your channel is FANTASTIC! I started looking into air purifiers today and was so overwhelmed, I thought I would need to spend several days looking for the right one. Your channel, along with Air Purifier First, gave me all the information I was looking for and helped me make up my mind in an hour. I was actually considering a $500 air purifier before I watched your buying guide and I ended up purchasing the Winix 5500-2. Can't wait to have clean air in my room, lol! Thank you for your extremely in-depth reviews!
If you’ve never used an air filter these are great. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_dppjvjF8BYEmPSDTcgCUdRsgWYLXNHN I ended up with three after starting out with one. The noise level depends on the 1-3 settings with how hard you want the machine to work. You can also upgrade the filters and get one better for pet hair and smells which is a must have in my home. I noticed the air seemed lighter and easier to breathe when running the machine for the first time. Works great every time. Highly recommended!
Great straight to point videos. Ended up getting coway mighty, would of preferred winx 5500-2 but it look like it’s from 90s. With regards to large room, you are absolutely correct it’s all about cfm to noise level. With that being said you should do test when two 250 units run on medium and measure cfm/power usage vs a single larger unit on medium. Don’t forget to mention filter cost and potential saving by using non oem filters. Most who really need purifiers tend to them 24-7 at the highest setting with most liveable noisy level, and it sucks how most companies only list min and max. Lastly since u already got the different units actually show the noise level of each machine u review at each speed setting people want to hear how each speed setting sounds like

I got the 211 and use it in a smaller room so I can run it at the quietest setting and still clean air at a lower noise than smaller unit can at a louder noise level.
Another benefit of multiple units over a single one is if one breaks down. If you have one large one your are out of luck till it gets repaired or replaced. With multiple units, if one goes down the other will at least filter the area till the defective one can be fixed.
how about the ozone emitted by the winix? I understand that if you turn off the plasmawave you diminish the ozone but not eliminate completely compared to say iqair or austin air? any advice? thank you kindly
I have a MA-112, which is 450 CFM I believe. It moves a crap ton of air through large, high-quality filters and my (mid-grade) PM2.5 sensor can't detect any particles anywhere in the 1,000 square foot room it is in. So it's performance is pretty good. It's also expensive to operate, filter replacement costs are high, and it's noisier on the higher settings as a byproduct of moving that much air through such restrictive filters, so I can definitely see the merits of having multiple smaller units as well. In reality, I think two smaller units may actually be more economical to operate.
I like your channel and your analysis. I have two comments. One, it would be helpful to know how you test products, and how you arrive at the results. It would also be helpful if you had products you liked at different price points. As other commenters have mentioned, it sounds like you're working for one manufacturer. Two, value is not the only consideration when choosing a product. If value was the only consideration, then everyone would drive a Toyota Corolla or a Camry. Aesthetics plays a huge factor. And the Blue Air, while more expensive, is far more aesthetically pleasing than the Winnix, which may outperform the Blue Air in both in value and performance.
Thank you for your comments! For a more detailed description of my testing procedure and test results, as well as a more detailed comparison of different models see my written reviews here: www.consumeranalysis.com/guides/air-purifiers/best-air-purifier/#reviews
I watched your analysis about the Winix 5300-2 Air purifier and ordered one, we do not regret it, we will purchase one more. We own 2 Austin Healtmate Jr. air purifiers which we bought years ago, they are very high priced and the replacement filters are super expensive ( you can actually purchase a Winix for less then what 1 filter for the Austin air costs). Austin advertises that the filters are supposed to last 5 years depending on the air quality in your home, maybe they do, but in our case we had to replace them every 8 month at a pro rated cost from Austin Air directly, at 325.00 for the 2 filters which included the shipping charge of 40.00 for both. These filters are super expensive, plus the Austin Air Purifiers are super loud, even when they run on the lowest setting. On speed 3 which is the highest setting, you can hardly hear the tv. These machines are to noisy for a bedroom as well, it might work for someone that is hard of hearing but not if your hearing. We love our new Winix 5300-2 because it is very efficient and very quiet compared to the Austin Air. Also the the filters for the Austin Air filters are very hard to come by right now, it can take weeks to have one shipped to you, so we started searching for a cheaper and less noisy alternative that would not break the bank every time we have to replace the filters, that is when we came across your videos and decided to give the Winix 5300-2 a try. Thanks for helping us to make the right decision on what air purifier to buy with your informative video and by the way, the Austin Air WILL increase your electric bill, don’t we know it! We wish we would have known about the Winix 5300-2 before we ever purchased the Austin Healthmate Jr. at a price of over 500.00 per unit, we could have saved ourselves a ton of money!

Great review with intelligent information. ✌👍 The solution for running a single high cfm unit is very simple ... Just run one or more fans in the room to effectively circulate the air thus allowing the single unit to encounter all the air in the room. No one with any common sense would expect a single air filter unit to be able to fully circulate ALL the air in any room.
I have 2 Winix models. They're great; however, they're grey. Everything we own is white. I spent the extra money on a Coway Airmega 400 just for that reason. Otherwise, would have gotten more Winix models. What are your thoughts on the Winix AM90 or C545?
Interesting, here are the specs for a Winix C545 (basically the same as a 5500-2 I believe) on Costco's site: CFM Rating: 56.5 CFM Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): 232 Standard Cubic Foot per Minute It would be nice if they list what SPEED each rating is for, ideally list CFM ratings for all speeds.
The Costco unit is not the same as the 5500-2. The C545 has the lower quality carbon filter, fabric impregnated with carbon. The 5500-2 has higher quality compartmentalized filter with carbon particles. My 1286 square-foot condo smelled like spaghetti I had cooked the night before. Winix 5500-2 air purifier arrived the next day. After setting it up and running it for less than five minutes, the cooking orders were totally gone. Very impressive.
Excellent reviews and explanations, thank you. This is exactly the information I was needing. I recently bought a Winix 5500-2, and I agree that it's a very good choice; I've ordered to more to handle the air in my large open living room area. The Winix is much better than any of the models I've owned previously, works fast and does a better job. I'm hoping that you'll do a video about replacement filters for the Winix 5500-2, i.e., do they need to be genuine Winix filters? Are there good and bad brands (making replacement filters)? The savings on filter costs (in buying off-brands) could be substantial, particularly for folks who own several air purifiers, but not if the replacement filters (for example) may not be genuine HEPA filters or if the replacement charcoal filters are less effective at catching VOCs. BTW, prices are creeping up for the Winix 5500-2, which may affect its value per dollar in the future.

Thank you for sharing. While I completely agree with your analysis here, there’s a few things that many are not thinking of in this “2 unit scenario” and that is that your doubling your annual cost to operate, more filters more electricity. At the end of the day the greatest cost in air purification is going to be the filters and it’s efficiency, or lack of (should you choose low budget unit) to run. The 2 unit scenario sounds great until you do the math. If money or energy isn’t a factor, then 2 units is better.
My 5500 does a fine job on 600 sq ft it just takes longer and I move it once to a new side of the space. Clean air and Christmas lights are two electrical extravagances most folks like me will GLADLY spring for in life
Found your channel a few days ago, wow you're super underrated man. I predict your channel will get big soon, just give it time and be patient and most of all, thank you
Something not mentioned was the cost to replace multiple purifiers "parts" compared to just one?The difference there might eliminate the savings of buying 2x 250 over a larger purifier. Also kind of not mentioned is the larger ones are THAT for a reason they can purifier a larger area of air compared to the smaller ones. So you might save 100 maybe 200 buying 2x 250 compared to say the Pure Air 211 for 500 but how costly are the replacement parts?I also found that it was tough to find a 250 at yoru local stores but found more in the range of 220-230 whiel the 211 was in at 340-380 cadr /cfm . Yes
You are correct,, but let's be a little realistic. Using multiple units boosts the electric bills also. A unit in each corner of the room may be nice but the cost can be prohibitive given the added cost of not only the extra units but the extra filters and the utility bills.
You don’t have to run the two units at 100%. Two units running at 50% will use vastly less electricity than a single at 100%. This is due to the fan motor’s efficiency not being 100% optimal.
No, not hired by Winix, although you're right - I do talk about Winix units a lot. I just strongly believe the Winix 5500-2 is a great air purifier and the best value for most applications. The Coway Mighty would actually be my top choice if it had a better carbon filter and a slightly better price. We'll see what happens in the future when new models come to market - if I still recommend a Winix unit or recommend a new brand.
@Amy Bradley oh I'm not an expert. But I'd probably agree with him that something like winix 5500 would do for most rooms. One thing I can say has helped me a lot was getting a sealed vacuum with a HEPA filter in it. I vacuum everyday though. I bought a larger air purifier with HEPA and it's okay. For smells you gotta have carbon(actual pellets) or a mineral filter. Mine is EnviroKlenz. Works well but probably overpriced a bit. Their customer service has been great though.
@Amy Bradley I look into refurbished shark vacuums that are sealed with duoclean makes it way easier to pick up big things. They're expensive but they work well. Also Dyson refurbished. The battery powered stuff makes it easier to stay on top of vacuuming.
I have a question. My living room has 10ft ceilings. room is 17ft by 19 ft. We have a smoker in the apartment. (3) cats as I foster cats. It has a 10 by 11 ft bedroom. small bathroom and a kitchen thats 10 1/2 ft by 11 1/2 ft kitchen. Smoke is primarily in the living room. I have copd and asthma. what model and how many purifiers in each room do I need. I am not looking for a purifier in bathroom as there is no room for purifier in the bathroom.
I would recommend one Winix 5500-2 for each of these rooms - living room, bedroom, and kitchen. Although, if you can afford it, I would go with an Austin HealthMate over a Winix for the living room. 5500-2 review: th-cam.com/video/An1viLvI8Xw/w-d-xo.html HealthMate review: th-cam.com/video/QSf2BWGdbGQ/w-d-xo.html

I have a modular home with cathedral ceilings. As most have a furnace with one air return above floor to front of furnace. What type of air purifier to do the job as say from the biggest open floor plan room(living room ,dining room .kitchen, mud room) should i be looking for and where should I place it? Directly in front of furnace intake or opposite end in living room pushing clean air toward furnace? Brand and model suggested. 1500 sq.feet.And suggested time to run unit.
If you have Winix 5500-2 and need to cover a 600 square foot open area for living room, kitchen and hallways, do you need to put the units in opposite ends of the area for proper coverage or can you put both together in the same room and still properly cover the entire area? I’d rather keep them both out of the way in the living room and not put one in the hallways since they would be trip hazards and eyesores. Also, is the 360 sq foot rating for the 5500-2 assuming you have to run it at maximum fan speed?
You can put them together. I recommend running them on maximum fan speed to establish low particle concentration in the room. You can then set them to their second highest fan speed to maintain low particle concentration in the room.

Do you think 2 units would be sufficient enough to minimize fume in a 1000 sqft nail salon? We leave the AC fan running all day but of course its not meant to help with removing odor/fume. Or a separate ventilation system with exhaust fan would be better in my case?
I have an open layout basement space with functionally defined sub spaces. The ceiling height is lower than a standard above ground room ). The entire space to be filtered is 375 sq ft. Does it require two units or one ?
What type of air quality monitor do you use in your testing? And is it effective at measuring concentrations of very small particles (sub 0.3 microns)? Or is it mainly only accurate for larger size particles?
Okay I’m assuming the Dylos DC1100 pro is what you use in your testing then, is that correct? Do you have reason to believe this is better than other options, say something like a PurpleAir PA-I monitor? Can either monitor sub 0.3 micron particles well?
Yes, I use the Dylos. It only measures particles down to 0.5 microns. If an air purifier equipped with a HEPA filter removes particles at this size with a certain efficiency it is a very good indication of how well it will remove smaller particles as well. See the graph on page 21 here www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2003-136/pdfs/2003-136.pdf
Consumer Analysis thank you for the response and CDC source info. Based on evaluations from yourself and others, I am planning to purchase ~2-3 Winix 5500-2 units, due to its efficiency (both filtering and energy usage), low noise at high fan speed, and low relative cost. I appreciate the fairly technical approach you use in your product evaluations/comparisons. But I would like to get an air quality monitor as well to help manage my air purifier usage, as the apartment I recently moved into is very close to a highway (our windows face it and the breeze typically blows from that direction too). The apartment complex does not have central A.C. and doesn’t allow traditional window units, so we have to open windows to keep cool (although I am weighing getting a portable A.C. possibly). I also would like to generally have some idea of how dangerous our air is here to help maybe decide if I should move when my lease is up. I understand that the concentration of very very small particulate ~should in general probably be (?) correlated with concentrations of particle sizes that the monitors can detect (and while running an air purifier with a true HEPA filter this should almost definitely be the case, as you indicated). But I’m just trying to get the best sense of my situation (and the potential long term health risks) that I can, not only while a purifier is in use but also while off/when the windows are open. Any chance you would do an evaluation of consumer air quality monitors, such as the Dylos, PurpleAir, and IQAir AirVisual pro? There is some data out there comparing their performance (see link below) but it takes a while to parse through, so even just a summary video of the literature findings with additional comparisons of the user interface/experience would be quite helpful. They certainly aren’t nearly as accurate or precise as scientific instruments, but still seem to provide enough info to be of some value. Thank you for a very thorough explanation. I have a large room (530 sq ft). Your points are very valid about running two units rather than one large one. Just had a few questions: What are your thoughts on the cost of replacing all the filters? Are the Winix filters widely available or just from a couple of sellers? And would two Winix 5500 or other Winix models be sufficient for a 530 sq ft room? Thank you.
Most high CFM units (e.g. Coway AirMega, Medify MA-112, etc.) use two sets of filters so there isn't any filter cost savings if you go with one high CFM unit over multiple lower CFM (e.g. Winix) units. The Winix filters are widely available and frequently on sale. And yes, two units are sufficient for a 530 sq. ft. room.
Great reviews. Can you review the MA-112 some time in the future and compare it with multiple 5500-2 running at the same time. How many 5500-2 would be comparable to the 950 CADR of the MA-112. Thanks.

I want to clean the area in the common area including kitchen, family room, living, room, dinning room, and hallways, and all rooms are open to each other, is it better to buy Medify MA-112 which advertises as 950 CADR and covers up to 2500sqft, OR get set of 2 Medify MA-40 with 800 sqft coverage in 30 min and 330 CADR? I already have a central furnace system which has its own filter to clean the air. What if I place the air purifier right near the return vent? How is Medify compared to IQ Air or others?
There is a substantial enough difference in output for one MA-112 to be more effective than two MA-40s. Generally, you want to place the air purifier in the room (or common area) with the air that you want to purify. Placing the air purifier by your HVAC system's return vent will not be as effective.

Hello can someone PLS give me info for the LG Pucicare 360 i see no info on the internet for it mut i see it uses the same filters. I would love yoo see some info.
I haven't had a chance to test it, but looking at its specifications it's unlikely I would recommend it because it offers very low output for the price. It looks like it outputs at about 230 CFM and retails for over $500. The Winix 5500-2, for comparison, outputs at approx. 250 CFM and retails for under $200.
Some very interesting points, but you sort of contradict yourself because you first say that multiple units are needed to better distribute the air around large rooms, but then later on you say that there is no air bubble around the air purifier and that even in large rooms, the air quality very quickly evens out as clean air will move to areas where the particle count is higher. Which one is it then?
Multiple air purifiers increase total output (CFM) which increases the rate at which air is cleaned in the whole room. There is no such thing as a clean air bubble around a single air purifier.
@@consumer-analysis I was actually looking for purifiers for a large open space with tall ceilings. I was hesitating between two 280 CFM purifiers or one 560 CFM. In your previous video you were saying multiple units were better, but are you now saying those two options would be equivalent since there is no air bubble? I can figure out cost, size etc. by myself, just curious about the air filtration aspect. Thanks again for your very in-depth content, I learned a lot!
@@stephanekiss The two options are not equivalent. Multiple units provide multiple locations in the room where "dirty" air is taken into the air purifier to be processed and multiple locations where clean air is distributed.
@@consumer-analysis That's where I'm still confused. If you say there is no clean air bubble around a single powerful purifier, and clean air quickly moves to parts of the room where the particle count is higher, then is it really important to have purifiers in multiple locations?
@@stephanekiss I wouldn't say it's really important but it does make a difference. I will also say this: I wouldn't recommend multiple 250 CFM units over a single higher CFM unit only for the sake of having multiple units in multiple locations vs a single unit in a single location - which is why I list several other reasons for buying multiple 250 CFM units over a single higher CFM unit in the video.
for a room that's roughly 500 sq feet would 2 of the AP1512HH's on opposite sides of the room be overkill rather than one large machine??? (I have both but didn't know if it would be overkill or I should just buy something capable of doing 500-600 sq feet on it's own)...it's not super large so I didn't know if the "larger room" mentality kicked in for something this on the "edge" of the Coway's 361 sq feet ability
Which purifier is best for a basement apartment 900 to 1,000 feet with 2. Rooms and no closed doors from living to small a cheat entrance to bedroom. And kitchen. Also cat.& dog with some smoking.
I have a large two story family room. Currently using a Honeywell 300. Not sure how effective it is tbh. Does having high ceilings affect the performance of air purifiers?
Yes, it does, as the room has a greater volume of air that needs to be purified. A particle meter would be helpful in determining the efficacy of your HPA300 in your family room.
Hi, I found your videos useful for these air purifiers, I apologize in advance, I am using a translator, I am not clear what, if I have a 100 m2 apartment, is a single purifier ok? or do I have to use multiple purifiers in different rooms? I'm thinking of buying a Philips AC4236 / 10, what do you think of this purifier? otherwise I could buy more than one of those from xiaomi. What would you recommend for an apartment of 100 m2? thanks and congratulations.
You would need multiple (at least 2) of the Philips units you mentioned to properly lower particle concentration in a 100 m2 space. Unfortunately, I have yet to test that particular unit because it's not available in the US. But, looking at its specifications it looks like a solid option.
@@consumer-analysis alternatively I had thought of number 2 purifiers of the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier, given the cost of a Philips appliance, I thought that with one I would have solved the problem, the other alternative would be a philips and one Xiaomi. To be exact, the square footage is almost 90 square meters
@@TheVikingo1979 I recommend trying to find the actual output (CFM) of each option (Xiaomi vs Philips). Go with the option that gets you the most output for the price. You can buy one unit to start and only buy another if you find using the one doesn't adequately lower particle concentration in your space.
What do you recommend its not as large but it's a humid basement that has extreme dust particulars that come from boiler , dryer and pets? I was looking at the one Mefify MA-112 or 2 MA-40. Or what would you recommend?
when you say that it cost less to run multiple unit do you take into account the multiple filter that you will have to buy with the smaller units? Those often cost close to the same as the bigger filter used in bigger unit and they often last less time than the bigger units so in the end, it will cost a lot more in filter renewal with multiple units. In 1-3 years, you'll probably end up with a higher total cost than if you had used a single big air purifier.
Yes, buying multiple filters is taken into account. Most filters for higher CFM units are considerably more expensive than filters for units in the 250 CFM range. For example, Coway AirMega 400 (approx. 430 CFM) filters are double the price of Coway Mighty (approx. 250 CFM) filters.

This was a very helpful video! I'm an artist and need something that can help with VOCs as well as particles. I'm definitely planning to get two Winix 5500-2 units with the carbon pellet filters. Thanks for the great insight, and for making this a LOT easier for me to decide. I'm preparing to move into a large studio space, and need something that can keep my oil painting studio non-toxic.
Most manufacturers do not give the CFM for their products. Instead, they give CADR. I talk about estimating CFM based on CADR here: www.consumeranalysis.com/guides/air-purifiers/cadr/
All I've been asking is what the best purifier is for a 750 sq ft bedroom. Still not sure what the answer is but I know Winix seems to be the go to for all the videos I've watched by you. I have 4 parrots with very small lungs, in a very large bedroom. I still don't understand if I buy 1 2550 Winix or 2 or the large bedroom unit with minimal lights at night? Now I'm more confused than ever? Help
Thank you for this video! I am researching the best air purifier for my situation and you videos have been extremely helpful in this process. I do have a question though. I took a lot of great information from this video and though I would love to take your recommendation and have 2 units in my space, I don't have two available outlets to accommodate that. My space is approx 650 sq ft. with 10 ft ceiling. It is a dog kennel that houses up to 14 dogs at one time. I am looking for a purifier to keep dust, dirt, hair, chemicals from cleaning, and help mitigate the spread of contagious illness. Here's my question: What would be your recommendation for a single unit for my space and concerns?

(True) HEPA is a standard defined by the US DOE while H13 is part of a European standard (along with H12, H11, etc.). For this reason you can't really compare the two metrics.
Very good point, I suspected that the purity of air decreases exponentially with the distance to that machine and most producers measure air purity just close to their machine, I would definitely buy 5 small devices of 100$ each instead of a large 500$ device.
The Winix 5500-2 can only release ozone with its plasmawave feature (ionizer) turned on. And this feature can easily be turned off and left off. Though even with it turned on the unit is still completely safe to use: ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/air-cleaners-ozone-products/california-certified-air-cleaning-devices
Amazing videos. Watching your videos was more helpful than my research of the last 4 days. I just both 2 of the winix 5500-2. I hope you can expand the product categories that you review. There is way too much product on the market and I never know what to buy. I would need to do weeks of research before I can buy something. Currently, I've been looking to buy a new robot vacuum and/or robot mops to replace an old one. But there is too much on the market and IDK what to buy. Also looking into new security systems and there too many choices. I try to look for reviews on Reddit but they do not do as good of a job in comparison as you do. There are many newer companies nowadays vs pre-internet there were mainly top 3 companies that people choose. Too many choices!
Great explanation on CFM and CADR. Also a big difference on who verified the rating as well.AHAM , Korean air institute , China? I have a Xiaomi pro with a claimed CADR of 500. But who verified? Don’t believe it is anywhere near a true 500CADR

Yeah but are you taking into a effect that you're going to have to replace more filters and whenever you have a chance to buy a commercial one you would think that a commercial one would always do better than any other case than residential ones
Hello, I'm commenting all the way from the Philippines where it is extremely dusty, and I've been eyeing on purchasing good-quality air purifiers for some time now. I appreciate your extensive videos as they are incredibly detailed. For this video, though, I don't quite understand some of your points, but I hope you can enlighten me. Some questions I have: 1. Why is 250 CFM the ideal rate for rooms around 300 sq ft? Does it have to do with the time you operate the air purifier? Assuming an average room measures 8ft high, that room would be 2400 cubic feet in volume. With 2400 cubic feet and 250 CFM in mind, is the ideal operation time for air purifiers at 9.6 minutes? If ever it is, how did you conclude with those figures? 2. If I purchase an air purifier that has a low CFM rate compared to the volume of the room, would it be less beneficial? Like if instead of purchasing two units for a large room, I purchase one and have it turned on for double the time. What would the costs and benefits be for those two approaches? Is power consumption that high of a cost? Thank you and I look forward to your response.
1. The square footage recommendations are based on our testing. 250 CFM units were able to properly lower particle concentration in rooms only up to about 300 sq. ft. 2. A low CFM unit won't be able to "keep up" with new particles entering a large room. According to our testing, a 250 CFM unit has to run on maximum fan speed non-stop to keep particle concentration low in a room as large as 300 sq. ft.

An issue I face is the availability of these units in Australia, and the availability of their replacement filters in Australia. Your top recommendations either aren't available, or cost too much to ship/cost too much to replace filters, if I can find somewhere that will ship them in the first place. Any idea of good value units that are available here, or ship here to Australia?
I've tried to find good options to recommend to Australian viewers in the past but unfortunately there was nothing that jumped out at me, especially with value as a strong consideration. The best I can do is to recommend the Winix Zero or Zero Pro - the closest (but quite expensive) alternatives to the 5500-2.
I saw this review on Amazon for winix 5500-2. Thoughts? "May be unhealthy Air purifiers with ionizers are tested to not exceed 50 ppb of generated ozone, they are not tested to produce 0 ppb. Ozone is unhealthy. In shopping for an air purifier I found various forms of misleading information regarding one stage of filtering called ionizing (plasma, ion). It is true that if you create an intense electrical field you can strip electrons of particles such as dust to make the dust electrically charged and therefore be attracted to an anode plate be collected instead of in the floating in the air. This same process may also kill bacteria and mold. But it is also true that the same mechanism strips electrons off of gasses such as oxygen and nitrogen. When oxygen is affected by the ionizer it becomes ozone. Ozone is a very unstable, highly-reactive, oxidizer. Think of it as a free-radical that wants to bond with something and most likely make something bad or at least unintended. It is toxic. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) limits for ozone emission concentration is 0.050 parts per million or better yet 50 parts per billion. For every billion molecules or air you are not allowed to exceed 50 molecules of ozone. That is a very, very, very small amount. It would seem like the fact that CARB has set this limit then everything should be ok. Well, the irritating ingredient in smog is ozone. On smoggy days ozone levels often exceed 100 ppm. During 2017 in Southern California ozone exceeded 100 ppb for 145 days in a row. Smog related ozone tends to drop every night. But if you are using an ionizer 24/7 and add its ozone output to the background levels of ozone you could create a real health hazard. The NIOSH recommended exposure limit for ozone is 100 ppb. According to NIOSH, Ozone levels of 500 ppb or higher are considered immediately dangerous to life or health. For filtering a mechanical filter is safer - coarse washable pre-filter, heap filter, and activated carbon are all you really need."
Thanks for the easy-to-understand review

you guys saved me a massive headache. thank you for the honest, foreword and thorough reviews nobody else takes the time to make
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!

I just bought 2 winix units. Hopefully it'll help with my family's allergies. Thanks for the review.
You're welcome! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to see what a HEPA air purifier can do for airborne allergies.
Love you concise reviews. No annoying music.

I'm a little bit bummed that this does not come in white and clashes with my decor. Is the AM90 or the HR900 better or at least comparable?
Thank you! I really appreciate your information! So helpful! God bless you 100 fold!!

How about the cost of filters? The qaulity of each machine you listed?
Thank you! Just brought two units.

The solution for running a single high cfm unit is very simple ...
Interesting, here are the specs for a Winix C545 (basically the same as a 5500-2 I believe) on Costco's site:
CFM Rating: 56.5 CFM
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): 232 Standard Cubic Foot per Minute
It would be nice if they list what SPEED each rating is for, ideally list CFM ratings for all speeds.

I predict your channel will get big soon, just give it time and be patient and most of all, thank you
Thank you for the kind words. I really do appreciate it!
should't the conversation be about volume of room and not area?
Either winix hired you, or you really love that winix unit. lol
@@consumer-analysis I bought one winix because of your videos. I’m buying another one for down stairs. Winix is the best for your money.
@@consumer-analysis would you recommend placing them on a shelf for better air movement?

What particle meter do you recommend?
I recommend the Dylos DC1100.
@@consumer-analysis Does it have to be the Pro version or would the standart DC1100 suffice?
@@pezata I believe the only difference is that the Pro version allows you to log data by connecting the meter to a PC. If you don't need that functionality, the standard version will suffice.

You can then set them to their second highest fan speed to maintain low particle concentration in the room.

i have coway and blueair...i prefer the blue air...coway in the bedroom and 2 blue air 211's in the large room...
Do you think 2 units would be sufficient enough to minimize fume in a 1000 sqft nail salon? We leave the AC fan running all day but of course its not meant to help with removing odor/fume. Or a separate ventilation system with exhaust fan would be better in my case?
What is the warranty on the blue air and model number? secondly are the filters washable?, if not, price to replace and duration before replacement.
Winiix, IQ R or Austin Air purifier please advise.

I will definitely look into making a video about air quality monitors in the future.

Thank you for a very thorough explanation. I have a large room (530 sq ft). Your points are very valid about running two units rather than one large one. Just had a few questions:
What are your thoughts on the cost of replacing all the filters?
Are the Winix filters widely available or just from a couple of sellers?
And would two Winix 5500 or other Winix models be sufficient for a 530 sq ft room?
Thank you.
Most high CFM units (e.g. Coway AirMega, Medify MA-112, etc.) use two sets of filters so there isn't any filter cost savings if you go with one high CFM unit over multiple lower CFM (e.g. Winix) units. The Winix filters are widely available and frequently on sale. And yes, two units are sufficient for a 530 sq. ft. room.
Consumer Analysis Thank you for the quick reply. Will be looking to purchase two Winix units in the near future.
Great reviews. Can you review the MA-112 some time in the future and compare it with multiple 5500-2 running at the same time. How many 5500-2 would be comparable to the 950 CADR of the MA-112. Thanks.
Could you please tell me what your opinion is on the Bissell Air 220? I am comparing this to the Winix 5500-2. Your video is awsome. Thanks.
I agree that multiple units are better. That’s why I have three 211+ and a 411. 280 aqi in Seattle. Help!

What is recommended to install a air purifier for a whole house in the HVAC unit ???
Im.in a 360 sq ft studio apt What do I do?
Thank you for this very informative and unbias review.
You're very welcome!
What are the CFM levels for each fan speed on the Winix 5500-2?
for a room that's roughly 500 sq feet would 2 of the AP1512HH's on opposite sides of the room be overkill rather than one large machine??? (I have both but didn't know if it would be overkill or I should just buy something capable of doing 500-600 sq feet on it's own)...it's not super large so I didn't know if the "larger room" mentality kicked in for something this on the "edge" of the Coway's 361 sq feet ability
Which purifier is best for a basement apartment 900 to 1,000 feet with 2. Rooms and no closed doors from living to small a cheat entrance to bedroom. And kitchen. Also cat.& dog with some smoking.
You would need 3 Winix 5500-2 if there is smoke
I have a large two story family room. Currently using a Honeywell 300. Not sure how effective it is tbh. Does having high ceilings affect the performance of air purifiers?
Yes, it does, as the room has a greater volume of air that needs to be purified. A particle meter would be helpful in determining the efficacy of your HPA300 in your family room.
I was able to get the conway 400s for $374, would that be a better buy then the conway 250?
is there an air monitor or gauge to show how clear the air is for purchase?
Yes, I recommend the Dylos DC1100. It's quite expensive but very accurate.
Very helpful information. Thank you
What do you recommend its not as large but it's a humid basement that has extreme dust particulars that come from boiler , dryer and pets? I was looking at the one Mefify MA-112 or 2 MA-40. Or what would you recommend?
A single MA-112 has approx. triple the CFM of one MA-40 at less than double the price so I would go with the single MA-112 for your application.
when you say that it cost less to run multiple unit do you take into account the multiple filter that you will have to buy with the smaller units? Those often cost close to the same as the bigger filter used in bigger unit and they often last less time than the bigger units so in the end, it will cost a lot more in filter renewal with multiple units. In 1-3 years, you'll probably end up with a higher total cost than if you had used a single big air purifier.
Yes, buying multiple filters is taken into account. Most filters for higher CFM units are considerably more expensive than filters for units in the 250 CFM range. For example, Coway AirMega 400 (approx. 430 CFM) filters are double the price of Coway Mighty (approx. 250 CFM) filters.
How about Medify MA-112 V2.0? It has very high CADR and covers a huge area, but it is priced

No, it does not.
This was a very helpful video! I'm an artist and need something that can help with VOCs as well as particles. I'm definitely planning to get two Winix 5500-2 units with the carbon pellet filters. Thanks for the great insight, and for making this a LOT easier for me to decide. I'm preparing to move into a large studio space, and need something that can keep my oil painting studio non-toxic.
where do i get CFM? is that available in the product specification?
Most manufacturers do not give the CFM for their products. Instead, they give CADR. I talk about estimating CFM based on CADR here: www.consumeranalysis.com/guides/air-purifiers/cadr/

All I've been asking is what the best purifier is for a 750 sq ft bedroom. Still not sure what the answer is but I know Winix seems to be the go to for all the videos I've watched by you.

Thank you!

(True) HEPA is a standard defined by the US DOE while H13 is part of a European standard (along with H12, H11, etc.). For this reason you can't really compare the two metrics.
@@consumer-analysis true HEPA is H13
Very good point, I suspected that the purity of air decreases exponentially with the distance to that machine and most producers measure air purity just close to their machine, I would definitely buy 5 small devices of 100$ each instead of a large 500$ device.
Can you speak to the Ion releases some people say are associated with the WInix. Some say that is dangerous!

There is way too much product on the market and I never know what to buy. I would need to do weeks of research before I can buy something. Currently, I've been looking to buy a new robot vacuum and/or robot mops to replace an old one. But there is too much on the market and IDK what to buy. Yeah but are you taking into a effect that you're going to have to replace more filters and whenever you have a chance to buy a commercial one you would think that a commercial one would always do better than any other case than residential ones
Yes, I have considered filter replacement costs. Higher CFM units either have larger more expensive filters or require multiple filters.
What about filter costs, it’s double the filters ....also blue air makes smaller units like the winix
Some questions I have:
According to our testing, a 250 CFM unit has to run on maximum fan speed non-stop to keep particle concentration low in a room as large as 300 sq. ft.
@@consumer-analysis thank you for the swift response. What kind of testing did you conduct?

Thoughts?
"May be unhealthy
Air purifiers with ionizers are tested to not exceed 50 ppb of generated ozone, they are not tested to produce 0 ppb.
