Here for the Mitch slap and you didn't disappoint. You are correct in that Avi, the guy with the beard had the deep voice. Scott, the tall blond, is a baritone, but has a very large range and he takes over the bass when the bass sings. Mitch, the guy in the hat, is a counter-tenor. Kirstie, rhymes with thirsty, is a soprano and Kevin is the beatboxer. Kevin also sings in the tenor range and plays the cello in some of their videos. Enjoy the rabbit hole! Avi left the group in 2017 and Matt Sallee was added. This is the only member change to this group. Mitch and Kirstie change their looks often, confusing some reviewers who think there must be a new member, but their voices can't be mistaken.
Three Grammys (plus two other nominations), the ONLY acapella group with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, world tours, sold out concerts, and even a movie. And they absolutely OWN Christmas with over 6 holiday albums!!
Just caught your reaction and it is always fun when someone new gets blown away by this group. Trust me, you keep checking out other videos of theirs and we "Pentaholics" will join in as you go down the rabbit hole. ❤
@VortexGamingandReacts One of my favorites, partially because I was around when my sister bought the vinyl record and yes I am that old... Simon and Garfunkel's, "The Sound of Silence".This showcases the new base singer..Matt.
"fu-k my skin" LOLOL I got goose bumps because you did. What a great first reaction to them. I'm a hard core PTX fan and just subscribed for more Pentatonix. They're 99% A Cappella but once in a while they have an instrument or two.....THANKS!
Welcome to PTX! This was a very satisfying reaction! We love to see these lovely, talented, humans appreciated. It was a good catch noting that Avi (beard/beanie) was the bass, but Scott (tall blonde) covered bass while Avi was soloing. You saw Matt in the photo at the end, so just note that Avi left the group and was replaced by Matt in 2017, and Matt has been the bass since then. That is the only change in personnel, although Mitch and Kirstin are always morphing their style, so it can be confusing when you are just getting started, but just know it is always them, just with a different look. The band got together in 2011 to audition for the TV show, The Sing Off (an acapella competition show) season 3, which they won. Scott, Mitch and Kirstin were friends since childhood and added Kevin and Avi right before the audition...like RIGHT before...like a day, lol. Kevin had a viral video at that time where he was beatboxing and playing cello simultaneously, filmed in the basement of his dorm at Yale where he was a pre-med major, which is how they found him. Avi is a trained vocalist and was a friend of a friend. he has a successful solo career now as a more folk style of singer. Most people jump into Daft Punk (their first Grammy win of 3) or their extremely popular cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. They very recently released new live performance videos of Hallelujah and Bohemian Rhapsody. Honestly, though, just look at their catalog and pick anything that sounds interesting. This band has an enormous and varied catalog of outstanding covers and originals, (including a lot of various types of pop, a little theater, and a ton of Christmas music), as well as impressive collaborations and solo side projects - they never disappoint!
I love watching someone watch Pentatonix for the first time! They are an incredible band with a few hundred hits. I’ve never been disappointed in any of them. Also I so enjoyed your reaction and am subscribing for more! Thanks…
"I love watching someone watch Pentatonix for the first time! " INDEED! It is like watching a three-year-old eat ice cream for the first time! It is why I ADORE reactions when someone first hears Pentatonix!
You will find if you keep following Pentatonix that acapella plays with your hearing. There are times that the sounds and harmonies are so perfect you would swear there are instruments. Pentatonix has an amazing blend of talent, as individuals and as a group, and they are flawless. They have a huge range of music to choose from. Enjoy!
Daft Punk is a great next song to to. They got their first Grammy for that video, which was made in their apartment -- recorded in a closet and filmed in a kitchen -- for a $400 budget. Their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is awesome. Imagine. Sound of Silence. Can You Feel the Love Tonight. Plus their "Evolution Of..." medleys -- start with Evolution of Music, then Evolution of Michael Jackson, then cherry pick as you like. And dig up a fan video of them doing Aha! live in Singapore at the Star Vista -- it's freakin' awesome. :D And Pentatonix owns Christmas. Pentaholics love listening to Pentatonix's Christmas songs all year round, so if you like Christmas songs, dive in. My favorite is Carol of the Bells, informally known to fans as "Mitch, breathe!" :) Little Drummer Boy is also great, as are The First Noel, O Come All Ye Faithful, and O Holy Night, just for a selection. Oh, and they did Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker -- a band with no instruments did a song with no lyrics, and won their second Grammy for it.
Scott, Kristin and Mitch have been singing together since high school... and their sound is pure magic together.....Avi has now been replaced by Matt Sallee who is equally good- and they all just compliment each other. their blend is incredible..
Thanks for the reaction. I hope you react to more Pentatonix. They are not an a cappella group, they are THE a cappella group. They are just as good live.
Welcome to the amazing world of Pentatonix! All have fantastic vocal ranges & talents and often throw parts back & forth to one another! Unless you see an instrument there is none! It may sound like there's a full band but it's all vocal! I'm subbing in hopes of more Pentatonix reactions! ❤️
I always enjoy first-time reactions to Pentatonix! The thing is, those of us who follow Pentatonix, never tire of watching reactions because we know they are great! Several other comments have addressed the people in the group and the one change (Avi Kaplan with beard to Matt Sallee in 2017) The group won The Sing Off competition in 2011. All of those performances are available on YT. And, as you noted, Mitch does not have a "regular voice!" He is a true contra tenor, the highest of all male voice ranges. We understand the copyright problems and you may have to use filters or word blocking over the video. It's all good! I got to your channel because it was recommended on my home page. They do so many styles of music, I'm sure you will enjoy your journey!
Here for more Pentatonix! Great reaction and loved your "Mitch slap". I also liked that many (most) of your predictions were correct. Soooo many great covers (upgrades) but also their originals don't disappoint. Suggest starting earlier in their career and moving forward in time to see how they change and their voices mature.
Just subscribed for more Pentatonix. ONE THING YOU NEED TO KNOW, AVI KAPLAN THE BASS LEFT THE GROUP AMICABLY AND MATT SALLEE JOINED THE GROUP. Yes next do a old one again with Avi. BOHEMIAN RAPSODY.
Avi Kaplan (with the beard) is the operatically trained basso-profundo. Scott Hoying (the blonde) fills in the bass harmonies with his impressive vocal range when Avi takes up the lyric line. The young man with the hat is Mitch Grassi, a countertenor renowned for causing an effect that long-time Pentaholics call a "Mitch-slap." Welcome to the rabbit hole, and we hope you enjoy the ride. When Leonard Cohen heard this cover, he pronounced it the finest cover he had ever heard of his song.
The bearded guy is the bass. He left the group in 2017, took a couple of years off, and returned in 2019 with Change on the Rise. Please react to Avi Kaplan, you won't be disappointed! Cheers!
Avi Kaplan is indeed great! Change on the Rise is my fav. Avi left group because all the tours were too difficult for his family. They all remain friends.
scott, the baritone who starts this off- trades off the bass with Avi, the bassist who takes the second verse. Kirstin is the amazing mezzo-soprano, mitch grassi, the amazing tenor and Kevin, one of the best beatboxers and singers and celloists in the business. watch him cello-box to "kiss from a rose" or "Kevin's 5th.."
Great Mitch slap there! I would recommend Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Havana, Come Along, Oh come all ye faithful, O holy night, Carol of the Bells, Dance of the sugar plum fairy, Kiss from a Rose, Daft punk Medley, Thank you, Mary did you know, The sound of silence. These are my favourites, but you can’t go wrong with any PTX song. They don’t do covers, they do upgrades.
The guy with the beard (Avi Kaplan) was the „main deep voice“, but the first singer (blonde hair, Scott) is also a baritone and takes over the bass, if Avi has his solo.
I’m so glad to have found a new Pentatonix reactor ❤. You are in for quite a journey, this song is without a doubt one of fan’s favorites. Their catalog is hundreds of songs deep and many of them are top hits. You are about to get smacked with Pentaholic requests (Pentatonix fans). As for myself I recommend Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk, Amazing Grace, or The Prayer. Really, you can’t miss with anything they do, they are that talented. Thanks for taking a chance on them, you won’t regret it. ❤😊
They just did a live remake of this song. Get ready to go down a long rabbit hole! They do wonderful covers, originals, and sometimes play instruments! Avi left and was replaced by Matt. Enjoy this ride.
Great reaction! There is a deep rabbit hole with PTX, having been around since 2011. I would recommend their Daft Punk medley for which they won their first of three Grammys. Also The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Bohemian Rhapsody, Kiss From a Rose and Can’t Hold Us to start. They also have many original songs and many live performances. I have gone to their concerts 3 times and they sound just as good live. They are amazing!
@@VortexGamingandReacts That's great! In that case, I'd recomend "All Is well" for 7Layers Session, "When I'm a cool" Live at Sunset Sound, " Chains", Without your lovin" or "Change on the rise".
Can pick from any of the three Grammy award winning songs, Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene w/ Dolly Parton. Can't go wrong there.
Loved your reaction to this very popular Pentatonix video! Have subscribed for more Pentatonix. Their cover of “Sound of Silence”and “Imagine” won’t disappoint either. ❤
Yes, they are amazing! This one is from early PTX. They have been together as a band for more than 13 years now, with only the one change that others have mentioned. Last year they re-did this one in a new video that is live. The essential harmonies are still there, but with some "extras", and showing off their mature voices. This one that you saw was recorded in a studio, and then the music video was recorded separately. The new one is recorded live. It's also worth a listen! The new one is pretty close to how they perform it currently in their shows. They haven't announced any tour dates for 2025 yet so we'll have to wait and see what is to come.
Scott (baritone)the tall Blonde takes over the bass line when Avi (basso profundo) with the beard, has the solo. Avi left the group in 2017 for mostly personal family reasons and Matt Sallee stepped in to fill Avis large(figuratively) shoes.
Bohemian Rhapsody, O Come All Ye Faithful, Amazing Grace… I could keep going, because every thing they sing is wonderful and they put a twist in a lot of their songs!
Somebody will find you soon and give you the whole Pentatonix backstory. They are three-time Grammy winners, several multi-platinum albums, Hollywood Walk of Fame Artists. Over 5 billion TH-cam views. You should definitely check them out live. The Hollywood Bowl 2022 concert has some particularly fine videos.
I love the "where's the bass coming from" on this song. It comes (mostly) from Avi (beard and knit hat) but when Avi sings lead then Scott (tall blond) doubles as bass singer! Blows people's mind trying to find the bass every time.
As others have said you are correct the bass is the amazing Avi Kaplan, You might be interested in checking out his solo music he has released since leaving Pentatonix. Most reactors will start with Change on the Rise his first release after leaving the group. All I can say ab out his music is WOW.
Strongly recommend checking out Ren, starting with his piece “Hi, Ren”. He’s an independent artist from the UK and really deserves to be more widely known.
Awesome Mitch-slap! Scott does indeed cover the bass when Avi/Matt are singing but not in this video. They used a backing track of Avi's bass while he was singing for continuity in the video. In other songs, and of course when live, Scott does an amazing job with the bass line. It was great watching the birth of a new Pentaholic! Subbed for more PTX!!!!
Avi Kaplan (one with the beanie and beard) left the group in late 2017, the other pic you saw with another black dude is their bassist Matt Sallee from late 2017 - present. PTX will be celebrating their 14th year as a group in May. Subbed for more reactions to PTX and be warned, they have a HUGE catalog of songs.
Just subscribed for more Pentatonix. Try their original video of John Lennon’s Imagine. It’s their label and TH-cam that does the blocking, not them specifically. Try adding a filter or blurring the video. Enjoyed your first “Mitch slap”! (When you heard the guy in the hat sing❣️)
Stopping the vid many times also seems to stop the copyright violation but you can research YT to be sure your vids aren't blocked. Some folks who react just don't show the vid but PTX videos are incredible so those channels won't get the huge number of views and likes as those which DO show the vid. Just a suggestion.
Pentatonix songs suggestions: **List may contain some songs you may have reacted to** Some Covers are: Hallelujah, The Sound of Silence, Daft Punk (GRAMMY WINNER), God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Cheerleader (OMI Cover), 12 Days Of Christmas, Cruisin For a Bruisin, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, O Come All Ye Faithful, 90’s Dance Medley, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad World, Wizard of Ahhhs (a montage of several modern songs made to tell the classic story of wizard of OZ), Radioactive, Problem, Say Something, Kiss From a Rose (live vevo), Jolene (GRAMMY WINNER), Royals, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies (GRAMMY WINNER), the Prayer, You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch….. Some Originals are: Love Again, Sing, Be My Eyes, Coffee in Bed, Happy Now, Run to You, A Little Space, Never Gonna Cry Again, The Lucky Ones…. During the pandemic they released an album called “At Home”. It was recorded entirely at their own homes separately on Zoom then sent to the studio to be put together….songs include… Blinding Lights, Home, When the Party’s Over, Break My Heart, Dreams. SO MANY MORE…. TOO MANY TO LIST, BUT THIS IS A GOOD START. ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY TO THE RABBIT HOLE KNOWN AS… PENTATONIX.
there are a lot of great acapella groups around! pentatonix, home free, and voiceplay are sort of the 'holy trinity' of acapella, but if you feel like checking out an all female group, i highly recommend citizen queen's cover of bad guy.
5:38 "Oh, there *is* music!" Yes, there's music. No instruments, but lots of music; it's just all being supplied by five human voices, plus some body percussion and foot stamping. Never make the mistake of thinking that "music" means "instrumental." A human singer who truly knows how to use their voice is an embodiment of music, and here we have *five* of those special people cooperating to make this song as beautiful as they can.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of PTX. Top tier of a cappella groups. I suggest Bohemian Rhapsody. And watch your subscriptions rise with us crazy PentaHolics❤
New subscriber, I love it when someone new discovers this talented group! For a complete change of pace, check out their Daft Punk medley and their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. After that, you’ll have bunches to choose from - The Prayer, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Imagine, their ‘90s Dance Medley, Amazing Grace and a lot more. Thanks for checking out Pentatonix, you picked the perfect song to start with! I enjoyed your reaction very much! Peace from Ohio …
Suggestions of PTX songs: --Daft Punk --Popspring (live from 2016) Hint: the record label is strict about copyright, so most reactors use an overlay (words, raindrops, etc)
More rabbit holes: Nightwish (start with „ghost love score“ live from Wacken 2013) and Pink Floyd (start with „Comfortably numb“ or „High hopes“, both live from their Pulse Concert 1994)!
You want recommendations? That guy with the beard and the amazing low voice is Avi Kaplan, who left Pentatonix in 2017 and is now a successful solo artist. His first release after leaving was 'Change on the Rise'. Have a listen and let us know what you think!
Awesome here's a small list of artists to check out Dax, Harry Mack , Metallica .. enter the sandman live in Moscow and ONE Teddy swims , guns n roses , AC/DC .. Thunderstruck ,Roy Clark .. Malaguena and dueling banjos , and Marcin Petrzalek😊😊👍👍thatll take you awhile lol oh wait one more Toby Keith courtesy of the red white and blue the angry american😊😊👍👍
Great reaction!! The first time people get a Mitch Slap is always fun to watch! You might also want to try Voiceplay -- their version of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" is fantastic!!!
Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! Next: „Daft Punk Medley“ and „Sound of Silence“. And yes, Avi, the bearded guy left in 2017, the current bass is Matt Sallee.
There was one change. The bass singer left and they got another one to replace him. The other 4 are still together from the beginning. I like their makeover of the song "Havana".
Scott (verse 1 soloist) is the backup bass. Avi (verse 2 soloist) was the primary bass. Several sources claim that, for this studio recording, they cheated and double-tracked Avi on verse 2. Maybe so. But they also have several live versions of this song on their channel, and on the oldest one (the one where Avi was still with the group), you can clearly see Scott take over the bass on v2. So it's only a question of whether he DID do it here, not of whether he COULD.
Welcome to our group of Pentaholics. You've been Mitch Slapped (the guy with the hat). There are hundreds of covers just as incredible - get ready for it. I suggest their official covers: Bohemian Rhapsody, The Prayer, Imagine (Lennon), Daft Punk and then just start watching all the rest. I'll subscribe for more Pentatonix!
The singer with beard and hat (Avi Kaplan) is the bass. When he does bass, the tall blonde singer (Scott) takes over the bass. The other singer (Kevin) is an amazing singer as well, bit typically does best box. There is no music. It is all them.
Yeah the bass, Avi with the beard left a few years ago and Matt Sallee took his place a short time later.. he's been with them since. No other member changes..
Love the “Mitch Slap”! Keep going with Pentatonix but make room for David Phelps - “I Have a Nothing” (cover of Whitney Houston)… you will be blown away.
Avi (guy with beard) is the deep voice. BUT, whenever the bass singer (whether Avi who left in 2017 or Matt who is the current bass) is singing lead, then Scott (1st singer here) takes over the bass line!
I recommend the Evolution of Michael Jackson to see them do something live. They are amazing. Also ignore the “don’t pause so much” comments. They don’t know. 🙂
Bearded gentleman the bass. Yes they Are A Capella. The 1st singer takes bass when the actual bass, 2nd singer, takes lead. aND THAT IS CALLED "bEING mITCH sLAPPED", WHEN mITCH gRASSI COMES IN WITH HIS CRAZY HIGH VOICE. They changed their bass singer in 2017, from Avi Kaplan (bearded man) to Matt Sallee. That's the only change in group history.
If you stay mostly with reacting to Pentatonix you will have your views dramatically increase and your subscriber numbers will go way up. There are a lot of us that follow You Tubers reacting to Pentatonix. They have a couple of hundred videos with over 7 Billion views. Listen to the comments here as to what songs to react to. Pentatonix covers virtually every music genre including gospel, country/western, rock & roll, rap, electronic, classical music, opera, show tunes, and a lot of their own compositions. They have 3 Grammy awards so far including one for the only song without any words done by an acapella group. Avi was with them from 2011 when they started to 2017 when he left on good terms. Matt replaced Avi on the bass in 2017.
First official Mitch-slap, welcome to the amazing world of Pentatonix 😊

The Sound Of Silence, Can't Stop Me. Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Daft Punk.... This a good variety>
That amazing bass is the bearded guy, Avi Kaplan. He no longer is with PTX. Speaking of it, his solo work and songs are more than worth checking out.
Thanks, i will look into it, for my next video👍

@@VortexGamingandReacts then check out anything from their Hollywood Bowl concert 2022. The video and audio quality is really good from that concert.
Can pick from any of the three Grammy award winning songs, Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene w/ Dolly Parton. Can't go wrong there.
Little Drummer Boy, Mary Did you know, - Pentatonix
Loved your reaction to this very popular Pentatonix video! Have subscribed for more Pentatonix. Their cover of “Sound of Silence”and “Imagine” won’t disappoint either. ❤
If you got electrocuted they did their job 😊… there’s no word to describe how amazing they are!
They haven't announced any tour dates for 2025 yet so we'll have to wait and see what is to come.
the pentaholics have arrived!!
Pentatonix is a DEEP rabbit hole. We Pentaholics will follow you if you dare enter.
Yes, they changed. Avi, the base singer, left and Mat is now singing base parts.
I totally agree... best artist to come along in a LONG time! I'm 66 and I think he is absolutely amazing!!! ❤
I subscribed for the Mitch slap! I am excited for the rabbit hole!
Subscribed for this rabbit hole you are about to go down! You can’t go wrong pick anything!!!
Mitch is a true counter tenor, very rare...
Just subscribed for more Pentatonix please. To be totally caught up on all their music and videos you only have 264 more to go.
Check out their song "Daft Punk", it won them their very first Grammy Award. They do all genres of music and lots of Christmas songs too.
Just subbed for more PTX please! And start a Pentatonix Playlist... The Pentaholics will find you and will love you for it!!! 😅❤
Imagine, the wall of sound is amazing.
Pentatonix songs suggestions:
**List may contain some songs you may have reacted to**

During the pandemic they released an album called “At Home”. It was recorded entirely at their own homes separately on Zoom then sent to the studio to be put together….songs include… Blinding Lights, Home, When the Party’s Over, Break My Heart, Dreams.
SO MANY MORE…. TOO MANY TO LIST, BUT THIS IS A GOOD START. ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY TO THE RABBIT HOLE KNOWN AS… PENTATONIX.
Welcome to Pentatonix!!!! Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, anything they do is amazing!
there are a lot of great acapella groups around! pentatonix, home free, and voiceplay are sort of the 'holy trinity' of acapella, but if you feel like checking out an all female group, i highly recommend citizen queen's cover of bad guy.
although, if beatboxing impresses you, i'm of the opinion that voiceplay has the best beatboxer out there.
@@holly2786 I will check both the groups, thank you for the suggestions.
@@holly2786 I second that and would add The Bass Gang too.
Awesome Reaction More PTX Please
5:38 "Oh, there *is* music!" Yes, there's music. No instruments, but lots of music; it's just all being supplied by five human voices, plus some body percussion and foot stamping.
Never make the mistake of thinking that "music" means "instrumental." A human singer who truly knows how to use their voice is an embodiment of music, and here we have *five* of those special people cooperating to make this song as beautiful as they can.
Yeah, initially i tought there was some drums, then i realised the beatboxer was doing everything, and that was amazing.
The trifecta! Those are the 3 most often watched by new reactors. Enjoy!
Avi in the beanie is the first bass , Scott the first singer takes over when he sings. The black beat boxer is Kevin keeping the beat.
Suggestions of PTX songs:
--Daft Punk
--Popspring (live from 2016)
Hint: the record label is strict about copyright, so most reactors use an overlay (words, raindrops, etc)
Pentaholic checking in... great react! sub'd!
Pentatonix can hum better than a lot of other singers with their electronic tweaks can sing.
For all those who think Kirstie is a soprano, you are wrong. She has a pop/musical theatre mezzo voice.
Avi is the bass... but when Avi sings, Scott takes the bass. Kevin is the Beatboxer, cellist, tenor and pre med graduate from Yale!
They have no instruments, only voices, Acapella!❤❤
Try their cover of Queeen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
Leonard' Cohen's favorite cover of his song.
Avi Kaplan is a singer song writer now. His music is diffrent than anything else out their. Look him up.
They have changed only one member since forming... Avi, the original bass left due to family needs, and Matt Sallee took over for him.
They have a recent video of them doing this live in 2024- when scott changes up the ending- and it is INCREDIBLE!!! please find it and watch
Loved your reaction. If you are ready, please see "Beguinners guide to Pentatonix"
Subbed for more PTX reactions.
it's completely a capella!
Subscribed for more Pentatonix (PTX). Recommend their cover of Sound Of Silence.
