    I love all this advice - especially the 2 week rule. It is also very effective to think about how much things cost in terms of your hourly earning rate. I like celebrating by having meaningful experiences (travelling, skiing, quitting a job when I don’t like it hahaha)

    My worst financial decisions came from sacrificing good times and the habits that came with them (drinking alcohol and smoking) for investing and being committed to being okay with losing money as long as I'm learning fast and growing my methods for wealth generation. It's also my best decision.

      Are you saving or are you investing?
      If you invest that 4000 into something with stable returns (S&P500 for example) then you automatically get an extra 5-10% a year on average. You save 4000 and you make an average 250-300 for free, once you're at 10000 you get a holiday for free after the year. The point where your passive income (or return on investment) starts paying for a yearly holiday is a good start, the goal should always be so it can pay for your monthly outgoings if you want it to.
      If you think of it like this it makes it so much easier to save, especially in the beginning.

    Great steps to think about saving money Vincent. I also like a mindful pause before buying something and like to first consider borrowing the item, getting it from a Buy Nothing Group, or getting is second-hand to save money as well.

    • @ShaunSurgener
      @ShaunSurgener 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea i also like looking at the question -- if someone were to offer me money instead of buying it would i take it... so many great ways to help with not spending money. I used many different things and was able to save 9k off 19k income my first year moving to LA and then save 100k in just over 4 years on lower income.. this in turn helped me buy rental properties and other investments down the road.
      now its about expanding more rentals , adding to my crypto portfolio and growing my channel
      Hope you are crushing it out there!! let's build that dream

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    In addition to the 2 weeks rule, I spend those 2 weeks trying to convince myself of all the reasons why I shouldn't buy it. If all those reasons are enough to change my mind, then I don't buy it. That includes spending a lot of time reading bad reviews and "pros vs cons" articles on the internet

    • @VincentChan
      @VincentChan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's a really great point about reading pro and cons articles on the internet and focusing on the cons especially. I also really like to look at 3 star reviews because chances are it's the most "balanced" feedback

    • @ShaunSurgener
      @ShaunSurgener 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is really great and definitely a good way to do it.. i also like to ask myself if someone offered me cash would i rather take the cash.. OR how much that would be worth 30 years from now if invested and earning a 10% average annual return.
      These tactics helped me save 9k off 19k income and 100k in just around 4 years of lower income-- now i own rental properties and many other investments
      hope you are crushing it out there .... let's build that dream

    Hi Vince, I've been watching your videos, thank you for your tips! I have a lingering question on one of your previous video getting into more debt now to purchase 'assets' such as property in view of high inflation. I'm in Singapore, and for example, the fixed interest that the banks gives out is likely only for 2 or 3 years. While we are able to get cheap financing now, (about 1%) the interest rates would most likely increase after that and inflation is likely here to stay. The housing market here has exploded because of COVID like everywhere else. How then, would we be better off if we were to purchase property, given the fact that our wages are not rising as fast as inflation? Thank you!

      this is SOO true... too many people always say just make more money.. and that works IF you already have the foundation of being able to save money. I was able to save 9k off 19k income in LA my first year i moved there using a lot of different techniques.. as i saved my first 40k then bought rental property and kept stacking.. now i've invested in over 20 rentals and property flips, own a bunch of crypto and other investments all starting with $400 and no job

    After watching this video I've realized that I have been needing a different cell phone and I have been putting it off for well over a year now to replace the refurbished one that I bought cheaply at $250 on Amazon over four years ago. Rinse and repeat as I just now purchased another refurbished cell phone at Samsung S10 at $230 plus an otter box. I'm not paying brand new prices of $1,000+ for a cell phone when a refurbished lasted me over four years trouble free at a fraction of the brand new cost.

    This is a great video!! However I want to point out a little something : the average is what *everyone would make a year if we all made the same amount.* There's this weird bias that the average is a valut corresponding to most people, which isn't the case at all. While the average in 2019 was 51K, meaning that if everyone made the same salary if would be 51K, the median was only ...34K!!! Which means 50% of American citizens made *less* than that and 50% made *more* - and when you put that into perspective, you realize how terrible the economy actually is. This comes from a langage confusion between the meaning of "average" in mathematics and the meaning of "average" in current langage : if the "average American" made 71K a year, man we would have one solid economy!!! Also the current inflation is around 5% so 105 bucks in a year is pretty much equivalent to 100 bucks now :P

    • @ShaunSurgener
      @ShaunSurgener 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea great point with the average vs median those are huge differences and typically median is a great indicator because it gets rid of anomalies / outliers. I used many tactics to save 9k off 19k income my first year in LA and then it helped me get to 100k savings in just over 4 years off lower income. That then turned into investment properties and other investments
      the goal this year is to add more to the portfolio of rentals and also some crypto and build out my channel

    I don't "plan" my savings anymore. It has become so integrated in my life - and my budget - that I now operate with fixed "Guilt free spending money". My pay is 16,000 of my currency after tax (a low income in my country), I have fixed expenses for 8,000, I invest 2,500 in index funds every month, save an additional 1,800 for car repair, dentist bills and unexpected expenses (and other bigger expenses like shoes, clothes, medication and christmas presents), and the rest (3,700) is for food, fuel and fun. If I have extra income, I will usually invest the money in dividend stocks (which I enjoy). Honestly, 3,700 is not a lot (the official amount is estimated at 6,600), but it is enough for me as I have done the saving-living for 3.5 years now. I do go out to eat, I do have take away, but it is only once a month and then I really enjoy it. I like my life and I do not feel I am living a frugal life, I just don't spend money on unnecessary stuff. I life in a country with good health care etc. Automation is the best way to secure a good nest egg and retirement fund.

    49% of my commission paychecks go straight to a ROTH 401k regardless if I make $200 or $2000. I started saving only 2 years ago and I'm hitting 50 soon. 😭😭 I don't drink or smoke or go to any salons. I don't pay for services.

    Here's one strange way to save a little money. Give your wife an expensive card for birthday or anniversary in the store. Then she puts it back. You still picked it out and she enjoyed reading it. What's the use of keeping a bunch of cards? Write her a note. On occasions like Valentine's Day or your Anniversary you both pick out cards for each other. You go through many as you normally would to find that perfect card. It's fun and it's free. 😄 Sorry Hallmark. 😊

    I have my own role when it comes to buying things like for entertainment. I would make it that the item is 30% of my savings. For example, i want this game which is $60. So I should have $200 in my savings.

    As a non North American citizen living in the US with zero credit score (started building now) I would love to know how to get started in the stock market/cryptos. I want to invest the saved money to make money off dividends. I have no trouble at all saving (doing 20% off every paycheck) but just throwing it into the savings account, I don't believe is that worthwhile.

    Good ideas but give this same information to people living paycheck to paycheck. 10% will be very difficult for these people.
    And no I'm not one of these people. I'm easily saving 20% of my paycheck. Yes I've learned to live with less.

    If you know how painful it is to step on Legos, then you must have kids lol… Speaking of kids, I’m going to start showing these videos to my 17-year-old. He’s having a really hard time with understanding patience and reward. he’s been very depressed about having a limitation‘s in his life and the realization that money is tied to freedom, and how important it is to manage that, while staying happy or at least content with the pursuit.
