Ya know, knuckles thinking rouge likes the island despite picking up the quite subtle hints is actually very in character. He’s smart enough to strategize and know about most of the world but stupid and naive enough to not realize Rouge likes him.
Knuckles has been proven to be a meathead even if he can strategize decently. Hell, he’s shown he can be easily tricked, like what Eggman did in Sonic 3 to get Knuckles to deal with Sonic and Tails while he would steal the Master Emerald.

I'm strong, naive, smart, my friends see me as knuckles. It's really cool to see people you know in real life, somehow match the unrealistic but cool characters of the sonic franchise...
