I had the pleasure of seeing The Rutles in concert at Southampton a couple of years ago, met Neil Innes after the show, he was an absolute gent

Did you see them at Che Stadium in 1965?

Thanks John! I used to watch this film as a kid recorded off of tv sometime in the 80's I think. I always thought the songs were great and actually rediscovered the album a couple months ago so it's great to get a review!

I've been a fan of The Rutles since the mid-80s. My first band was loosely based on both The Rutles and The Beatles. Although, for the life of me, cannot remember where I saw them first. It had to have been on a cable channel here in America. Thanks for reviewing. This made my day.

It seems to me that "With a Girl Like You" is basically a parody of "If I Fell" rather than "Til There Was You"-- just my two cents, great review

It is, indeed, "If I Fell" in disguise. Extraordinary song, barely surpassed by its model!

I totally Agree. Till there was you is nothing like "with a girl like you"

The album was in our local record store at least a week before All You Need Is Cash aired on NBC, and I purchased it as soon as I saw it. In "Piggy in the Middle," there is a backward track. When played forwards, it says, "This little piggy went to market." Forward, it sounds a bit like, "Stick around, let me bolt and sit back." You need the vinyl in order to play it backwards.

    Hi.
I saw Neil Innes live at the Cavern Liverpool about 2 years ago. Great show. It's Looking Good was a highlight during the show.
This is a very good Beatlesque album.
The songs I Must Be In Love and With A Girl Like You could easily be Lennon/McCartney songs. For me they are the most obvious ones
The movie is superb. Good humor.

I love the album, so many fun songs to figure out which Beatles song is being parodied. 'Let's Be Natural' is the stand-out track for me, a parody of 'Dear Prudence' I think.
I hope you'll review the first 2 Klaatu albums, many thought they were Beatles connected back in the '70s. Both are excellent, their later albums didn't reach the same height.

There's a spoof of "Love" called "Lunch" that the fans made it.
      It's uploaded to TH-cam.

Love the reviews John, I’ve still got my copy of the record too, it cost me £1 in 78, I’ve wondered how Lennon and McCartney got publishing on the songs that are parodies of Harrison and Ringo tunes and as you say Twist and Shout and maybe Till there was you, I’ve always thought it unfair though. Taxman influenced The Jam on Start and many more Beatles songs influenced others without the publishing being taken over by their company (as I’m sure it wasn’t them personally instigating this). I’m glad Neil Innes got the money from the Oasis-Whatever, How Sweet to be an Idiot comparison, the two albums are great and I saw the Rutles a couple of months ago at Abergavenny, they were selling a great T shirt saying Keep Calm and Barry Wom. You are the Walrus now John.

Hi John, interesting review. I think you should have qualified that most of the song titles were NOT RuTle songs, they were 'mock'titles. Plus I thought you could have told us the part George Played as the News reporter and Michael Palin playing the part of Derek Taylor. Also, you left out other essential cameos, Jagger, Paul Simon and Ron Wood!
    Just a little critique👍

Love your videos, been watching for a long time now. First of course because of the Beatles. Now a HUGE fan of Supertramp and ELO. From America, knew the hits but never bought any albums. Cannot stop listening now, thanks. Getting into ABBA and Badfinger as well. How come you don't do top tracks for artists, would love your opinion, TOP 20's maybe?

Absolutely love the Rutles , Neil Innes genius parodies Eric Idle so funny in his writing, only thing I would change is instead of Let it rot as the last album title I would bearing in mind the tea references would have called the album Let it brew 😀

Wow! Haven't watched it or listened to the music in quite sometime but what a fun album and mockumentary. Back when the Beatles weren't ancient history, but rather, very fresh in the public's mind with the thought of a reunion a possibility. Love your vinyl album cover and packaging. Much nicer than the cd version I own. Cheese and Onions(A Day in the Life??), It's Only Natural(Dear Prudence) and Get up Go(Get Back) are my favorites. Allen Klein was done by the late, great, John Belushi. For some reason I can actually see Paul not liking this while John and George digging it with big smiles. However, Isn't John's(Ron Nasty) female partner in the movie a dressed as a Nazi?? You can see that the humor in this project Harrison maybe carried a bit of it's irreverence over to the Wilbury project. Anyway, a nice review Mr Heaton. Glad you did this one.

Me and my friend are massive Beatles fans and we watch the Rutles film all the time. I originally had a recording off the TV and was excited to find out that the DVD of the film is longer. I think you have to be a proper Beatles fan to get it. The film says things about the Beatles that weren't public knowledge at the time for instance the Hells Angels staying at Apple and Brians interest in Bullfighting!

In an interview with Neil Innes he said that he ended up suing (and winning) Oasis as one of their tracks was so similar to a Rutles track. Sadly I can't remember which but I did find that very amusing!

    • @SuperNevile
      @SuperNevile 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It wasn't a Rutles track, but the title track from Neil Innes' first solo album "How Sweet To Be An Idiot", and Oasis's "Whatever" were apparently similar. Neil got a co-writing credit and royalties on that. IMO, only one one line of melody was the same, and I much prefer "Whatever".

    • @andygaines9686

John, you need to hold up the the album covers for much longer, too short a display. You should leave it in a visual section of your videos instead of popping it up and down its a distraction rather than an attraction!
It is a distraction to your detailed analysis.
