    Developer: Athena Co. Ltd.
    Publisher: Activision
    Year of Release: 1990
    Game Review & Impressions
    ---------------------------------------------------
Released in 1990, Sword Master combines platforming with basic combat, resulting in a game which feels reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts 'n' Goblins.
The game's USP, such as it is, is the ability to transform between sword-swinging Knight and spellcasting mage. Defeating the first end-of-level boss earns you a mystical rod that allows you to transform, and the designers clearly intended for this to be one of the main mechanics, switching between the two forms to deal with various foes you come up against.
Personally, I found the whole mage form largely redundant. The starting spell -- a sputtering excuse for a fireball -- is next to useless, at least compared to multiple inches of cold steel. More powerful spells can be earned by defeating subsequent bosses, but even these are restricted to a finite number of uses.
With its main feature left pretty much irrelevant, what remains of Sword Master is an average and overly difficult arcade platformer. The visuals are OK, with a kind of Castlevania style, and sound is decent enough, but I'm not sure there's much else to really recommend this.

This is a beautiful example of how graphically impressive 8 bit games could be. The gameplay is a bit repetitive but that was the standard back then. Still the parallax scrolling is something that was thought to NOT be possible back in the day. That’s why systems like snes and Genesis wowed everyone with their games upon their arrival. But as you can see here, even an 8 bit system was capable of that type of scrolling albeit a bit cut back, still impressive!

Technically not parallax scrolling, but some ingenious trickery to give the illusion of such.

for years i was hackling a certain nintendo friend on youtube to review this gem.
i remember when it came out, most mags slammed this game as a bad one, i rented it one time, then it became a regular rent game when nothing new was there, i loved the graphics, the anime scenes and the music, but the controls were the best.
until this day, i still consider this as one of the earliest forms of a ''souls like'' game , it was helped by the fact that it has some lore same as Demon's souls about a once brave knight that became evil and corrupt.
love this game, wish i bought it as a kid, i rank it highly, thank u for this video, it was a fun run down memory lane, one of the unsung gems of the nes.

Wonderful to see Athena's works being showcased. I felt that Sword Master was a more streamlined attempt at making a second Dragon Unit (Arcade) but came up short (and not as unique without all the weapons). It was better than Castle of Dragon, but Athena was more suited to trivia games and bowling (Super bowling being a decent game for early Super Nintendo) and some shumps like Biometal.

Certainly Castle of Dragon vibes. Gameplay could have been done better, but still looks great. Maybe some more platforming and make some enemies more long range to make the player use the wizard more.

My favorite game on NES, controls are simple, respond quickly. Just what it takes in strategies to beat the bosses (especially the last level where we chain them ) altern with straight attack, upper attack and defense...
Oh! And the Soundtrack, one of the best on NES, It is not for nothing that I had to engrave the ost into vinyl disc ^^

      @richardwieder2274 ปีที่แล้ว

I wholeheartedly agree with the visuals and graphics that was put into an 8-bit system. I will also add that in addition to the simple control features, I can definitely appreciate the blocking mechanic in this game. You are actually using a shield in our responsible for walking on attacks. Surprisingly, you can't really do that in games like Ninja Gaiden or Double Dragon.

This is an alright gem if you adjust to its quirks. I dig the fake parallax they did as well (duplicated background sprites that change when the screen scrolls to give that illusion).
It would surely be better if they tweaked the enemy placement, added some health pickups, and gave you a better motivation to use the Wizard, perhaps making usage of him required in certain areas, like perhaps having his spells expose Boss weaknesses.

Why does the game look/feel so boring? No, serious question. What are they doing wrong? The graphics are decent for NES, sound and music are okay too, the game concept is a fighting side scroller, which is a similar concept to Castlevania. It looks like a very well made game and still the game play is somehow lacking compared to similar games and I cannot figure out what the problem could be. Is it because you only go to the side and never straight up or diagonally, as in Cactlevania or Ghost'n Goblins?
