How To Turn A Computer Monitor Into A TV

  • After years of use, sometimes, we get tired of our now, old, but well served monitor. So what do you do with such a monitor? Throw it out? Give it to someone else? Recycle it, like some goody two shoes? Uh no. We’re going to turn it into a bootleg TV. Let’s get started.
First, I want to say, this might require some monetary investment. AKA. BIG MONEY. Not a lot, but a bit to fully transition our monitor to a tv. Second. You need a monitor that has a headphone jack and either a DisplayPort or HDMI port. Why though? Because most monitors don’t have speakers built-in or have terrible ones. Guess what TVs have? Speakers. That’s why if you don’t want to use the underwater radio speakers that your monitor has, you have to get a sound bar.
But Jimmy, why a sound bar? Why not bookshelf style speakers or even Bluetooth speakers. You raise a good point. But the reason we do this is because you can’t control volume easily with bookshelf style or Bluetooth speakers connected to a monitor. You have to physical go up to the speakers and manually press a button or move some knob. But with a soundbar, they typically come with a remote that lets you change volume. You know. Like a TV. The thing we’re trying to emulate. Just make sure the soundbar you’re buying has a remote and a headphone jack. So that we can connect it to the monitor.
Then you just need to connect everything together, like brain surgery, except we can actually do this. Connect Headphone jack to headphone jack and bam. We’re done right? No. Now we have to plug stuff into the monit- I mean, TV. But as you plug things into the TV, you might not have enough ports or the wrong port for the TV. If you want more ports, for all your inputs like directv, chromecast, gaming consoles, then I’d recommend a HDMI switcher that allows you to switch between different inputs. This one comes with a remote. If you have a displayport on your monitor, then you can get a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to connect it to the switcher. And BAM your old monitor is now a new to you TV.
So, everything works, and you just need to get some cable management done. Not too big of an issue. So, why would anyone do any of this in the first place? Well, it’s a waste to get rid of perfectly useful electronics, and not everyone has the technical know-how or patience to do a true DIY sort of thing like turning your monitor into a smart mirror. So, this something that’s simple to do, and provides a new small TV for maybe a kid’s bedroom, or a workout room or something. The only real downside to this bootleg TV is that it will lack some TV features, like antenna support, the initial input options, or showing volume levels. But, in turn, with a basic soundbar, the monitor TV already sounds better than most TVs without one, and when you do decide to get rid of the monitor, the soundbar can be used on a different TV that you own. Only real negative to this setup, in my opinion anyway, is that the size of the monitor is usually smaller than the average TV, so forget putting this in the living room or something, it’d look like a TV for Oompa Loompas.
So, I think this setup is a good for people who are trying to save a buck or recycle their old electronics. Just be mindful, that this thing won’t be killing some ULTRA 4K OLED QLED HDR 3D Alexa-enabled, featuring Dante from the devil may cry series TV. But, it makes a nice little budget tv alternative. And that’s really great for a recycled product.
Anyway guys I want to ask you a question. Is something like this viable? Or would you just throw away your old monitor anyway? Would you do this? Leave all that in the comment section below, if you enjoyed this video, give it a thumbs up, comment, and well don’t forget to subscribe. I’ll see you guys next time.

Yes, I WOULD do this! Exactly what I’m looking for in my craft room. I love to watch tutorials on TH-cam for my painting classes. My IPad screen is just too small but I have an older gaming monitor. I don’t have room to put a TV close enough. I also don’t want to invest in another computer. Perfect! Thanks!

I connected a Chromecast Ultra to my monitor and a JBL speaker via 3.5mm jack. This allows me to cast content on my phone to the monitor and use my phone as the remote/volume control.

I have a budget of around $750 to replace a 15 year old TV that had amazingly good speakers for its money back in the day. The picture quality was also incredible and still holds up pretty well to this day. Sadly, the thing is starting to show its age due to being used.
Since absolutely no TV in $750 gives me sound any close to what I currently get from my current set. Getting a TV with soundbar would give me the sound I get in $750, but the picture quality is far from an upgrade. So, what I settled with is a 32" Benq EW3270U and a TCL Alto 6 soundbar.
On paper, this combo looks pretty sweet. I haven't gotten to buying them yet, so any suggestion is welcome.

Do you know what adapters I'd need to make a commodore 64 computer monitor into a TV? I used to have it hooked up to a vcr when I had cable, and it is an excellent TV. But now I don't have cable anymore, just a digital converter box and rabbit ear antenna, and if I can figure out which adapters/connectors to use with this old monitor to accept the digital converter box & antenna, it would be great!

Hey man, looking for a monitor for my kitchen and limited to a 24" display. The main issue I have is that the bezels on a 24" TV is huge so I'd have to go down to 20" and they only go up to 720p. Does the remote for the HDMI switcher allow you to turn the tv off/on with a remote and adjust the volume if it has in-built speakers? This is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare to find a solution to

If I can hook up my cable antenna, then yeah. There are adapters for that, or at least I've seen people make them (coax-HDMI). And you can probably hook up cheap computer speakers, no? Just wondering. It can probably be done with cheaper components, but yes that will not be your living room TV, but your own personal desktop one, which is probably why you recycled your small monitor to start with. They actually say TV resolution is lower than the computer's. Think about it, film is always low resolution per frame compared to photographs.

You need to cycle through the input settings on your monitor until you see HDMI. There are buttons somewhere on the monitor to adjust settings. Check out the monitor's user manual for more info.

I like 4k video but high gaming frame rates are more important. It may sound like I have a lot of money but I don't. I got the 4090 used for $1000 that I saved up for for a year plus my old 3080 and the pc is upgraded a piece at a time over years.
