Building a no-cost Shadeport for my car #1

  • My little long-suffering car has been parking in the same, sunny, spot for several years now. The problem was that 'sunny' part. So, I thought to myself; why not build a shady spot for it? I have access to lots of eucalyptus poles that I can harvest directly here from my property and know a little woodwork.
The initial idea was to build a traditional square shed, but something about it didn't feel right - principally the roof. I would have had to buy building material (roofing sheets etc.) and I wanted to simplify things a bit.
Through a chance observation of a wooden structure in the Bainskloof the idea came to me that an A-frame may be the simplest way.
I had limited space in which to work as going beyond the existing concrete boundaries would have meant I had to start drilling into that concrete and then get Rawl bolts and metal braces and see a significant increase in my costs.
The other limitation was the height of the poles. Not too short because I wouldn't be able to open my car doors and not too long either as I need to be able to lift them by hand. There was of course also the other matter that I needed to consider which was the distance to the ground as I would eventually have to climb up there.
This is part one and shows the construction of the frame and sides. In part 2 we will add the actual shade.
Total time spent on this? About 8 hours up to now (excluding the harvesting and debarking of the poles). Most of the time was consumed by adding the metal bracing straps (with SOOO many screws).

The eucalyptus poles are quite a resource. It is rare to see people building with them. I'm surprised about the amount of space the poles created for your car. My sense of scale was off when the first tripods went up. I'm curious about your choice of cladding. Will you be going for shade only or rainproof also?
    Best of luck! 👍
