While Old Man Gloom brings an interesting blend of ambient music and sludge metal, one side of the sound ends up feeling more interesting than the other.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

OLD MAN GLOOM- NO / 2012 / HYDRA HEAD / DOOM METAL, SLUDGE METAL, AMBIENT, NOISE, EXPERIMENTAL ROCK, POST-METAL
6/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
6/10? This is one of the top, if not THE best heavy record of the year.
Funny that he says the vocals dont change enough, given that hteres three vocalists.
hojima fucking right
I still nominate this record for metal album of the year. Its just so crushing and the feeling of this album is something I havent felt since some of the older Isis stuff. 8/10
we do.
I can't stop listening to this album. I think upon more listens this review would be a bit different.
Do a review of "in the absence of truth" by isis
YEEEESSSS PLEASE DO
Great album huh MelloSav
So good
Heck nah, their worst album. They're my favorite band but that album was just Tool worship.
TheCalling15 I thought the same for a while, but it won me over. It’s not as heavy, but it’s their most structurally complex album in terms of individual song structure. His droning voice and the plucky reverb bass are a little “TOOLESQUE” but if you think of it as a prog rock album it works and it’s way less repetitive than their more sludgy stuff.
yeah, i'm really torn on the album. i really think some of the riffs and songs are that lacking. it's really like one element of this album is pretty interesting, but i don't think OMG is writing hardcore, sludge, doom tunes like they used to.
i know, right? sad times.
it does that.
yeps.
straight chillin'. cold lampin'.
i do, it's true.
Panopticon- Kentucky, Chrome Waves- ST, Latitudes- Individuation, Deathspell Omega- Drought, Worm Ouroborus- Come The Thaw, Pseudogod- Deathwomb Catechesis,
Anhedonist- Estrangement, The Great Old Ones- Al Azif, Evoken- Altra Mors, Ahab- The Giant, Love Sex Machine- S/T.
YESSSSS
hmmmmmm.
The ambient pieces were the strongest parts of Christmas, also. Something For the Mrs? Incrreedddible.
definitely thought it was a great album, the dynamics are amazing and while I get what you're saying about the heavy parts not being super unique, they are so bone-crushingly heavy that I still thoroughly enjoyed it
glad you like it. :-)
that's coming out next week, right?
1) I had a dream and you had a cameo in it. 2) I don't know who those bad subtitles are for. 3) how 'bout reviewing that side project from the pains of being pure at heart guy.
that's coming out at the end of this month, right?
I'd give it an 8/10. This album is pretty much exactly what I am looking for in sludge/doom, but I felt that some of the noise interludes could have been a bit shorter, as it started to feel like filler more than substance. I also agree that the vocals could have been a bit more varied, but I REALLY like his voice, so it wasn't a huge problem for me.
I enjoyed this album. Out of everything they've done I'd say this one may be the most accessible to new listeners. Their best work in my opinion though is Seminar III: Zozobra.
i have! :-)
the lulz.
Glad you reviewed it, bummed you weren't as into it, hopin I'll still love it
the olympic one?
You Should Review Serj Tankian's- Harakiri(Release Date 7/10/2012). He is the singer of System of a down and in his solo career he's morphed more into a rock and pop vibe rather then metal. He is very socially conscious and politically driven, you should check it out!!
He said he was done with Y U NO's from now on maybe a month or so back. But I agree. NEEDS MOAR CAL!
He has reviewed some incredibly mainstream stuff. He doesn't review it... because of the simple fact that Linkin Park sucks, just like they've always done.
Yes tell us of your sound system(s). We want a tour of how you listen to all these tunes!
You are alone at the time, and the time now is always.
Always was a word you used in promises. It is valueless.
Old Man Gloom always jumps back and forth. Some of their albums are more Texture than rhythm, melody, or technique. I would say that Christmas was their most technical album. The majority of their albums are about the Texture! The ambient scape is the point. Look at Seminar III: Zozobra. It is 6 minutes of a train passing before anything happens in a 27 minute Doom/Post Metal song. It's all about the Texture. Listen to Portal: Outer next. See what you think of that.
i know it's a couple weeks late, but any chance of a review of Hot Chip's new album 'In Our Heads'? it's infectious as fuck! some great early 90s House and 80s electro grooves, some of the most memorable hooks and fully formed songs they've ever recorded! have you heard 'Flutes'? it's a very strong contender for track of the year!! plus, i don't think you've ever reviewed a Hot Chip album or single, so it would be great to hear your opinion!
8 or 9 out of ten for me. amazing band and they don't take themselves seriously at all which makes it strange that they're so good...
The Needle Drop's Intros Compilation needed
I love Old Man Gloom. and this is honestly the last thing I thought you would review.
Hey Anthony, what are some of your favourite metalcore bands/albums? I think the genre gets a bad rap, there are lots of decent metalcore bands like Shai Hulud, Misery Signals etc
wow, really good review. Like the way you talck when it comes to doom/stoner/sludge etc. Cheers from Norway!
The album is intense and heavily rewarding but, those ambient moments stretch out the songs for way too long- like all their other albums. If they elaborated and focused a lot more on the heavier aspect of the music instead of these 3-5 minutes of annoying noise, this album would be perfect, but it's far from it.
Anthony, dude. Check out the band Hexen, They recently dropped an album called "being and nothingness"? i think that's the exact title. Believe me dude u wont be let down
He said that reviewing ten albums in a row is too much of a challenge. Instead, he's doing short audio reviews as replacement.
@hojima funny you say that because yeah there's three vocalists but each approaches vocals in the same kind of way.pretty much what he mean't by that. For me this is a pretty great record but I do see where hes coming fro with that.
If this is the soundtrack to Pablo Larrain's new film, I'd be so happy.
He's not doing that segment anymore.
Really liked this album on first listen. A strong 7 to light 8 for me tbh. And I'd only heard of them before, not actually listened to them.
Heck yeah- a new introduction narrative
Couldn't disagree more with some of your comments and your final score:
There's some massive riffs on this album! They ARE 'all that!'
Where I agree that some of the ambient bits are a bit unncessary and dont add much to the overall effect of certain songs, you also say they are both 'Window dressing' and 'Amazing' :S
It's an album that the band made for themselves hence NO. It's not supposed to be predictible or conventional in anyway and this is just testament to their creativity! 8/10
hydra head closes-sadness ensues
I know right. But I'm still not completely sure how he got the show back.
"No Forever" - that's kinda sad and deep...
Thanks Anthony.
heard godspeed
getting this
Even tho it is mostly screaming, Aaron, Caleb, and Nate sound different, annnd thats always been their deal, its not like that aspect of the band is something new...:)
i also felt like a couldn't tell the difference of songs on their 1st album. they all sounded the same to me.
I hope we get Ur fav albums of 2012 so far tomorrow!!
Rush - Clockwork Angels
What's that LP in the back?
cave in is tight as fuck
A review of Gojira's "L'enfant Sauvage" would be great =).
@edmeth really? I think all the ambient parts fit in pretty well with the songs for example the ambient part on Rats I thought was really awesome and the ending to Shuddering Earth was pretty good too.To each his own.
Misspelled "theneedledrop" in the outro... You need to sleep more Fantano.
