  • Hi. I’m Matt Metzger - Forage Specialist with Millborn Seeds. And we’re out here today in a field of Everleaf Forage Oats. What these are is really a true forage oat. We planted these with the sole purpose of making feed.
If you look to the sides and behind me, that’s exactly what these did for us. We got a lot of feed out here. It’s July 5th today. These were planted early in the Spring so they are a little later maturing Spring forage. But it’s about time to come in here and get these off.
If you look at the seed head, we’re getting to that early doe stage I’d say. So our tonnage is pretty much maxed out. You can see the seed heads are out. We’re not going to gain a lot for yield. Quality may start to decline as we let these go. So this is kind of the window within this next week here.
We’ll come in here, take this for silage. The other cool thing about these forage oats is they give us the opportunity to come in with a warm season forage or a cover crop that we can graze in the Fall. They work really well in a double forage cropping rotation.
As far as the Oats themselves, as the name suggests, the leaf is just massive on these. Definitely more leafy than the oats we’re used to planting. As far as making a lot of silage, these forage oats are a really cool option. Kind of a unique variety like I said. A true forage oat. They work really well.
If you have a gap in your forage program, you need to come in with a Spring forage, or you’re looking to do some double cropping to put up a lot of tons during the year, take a look at these forage oats. They work really well as far as making feed and allowing you that option and flexibility later in the season to do other things with your ground.
What we’re all trying to do is squeeze every penny out of every acre and that’s kind of what these allow us to do.
I’m Matt Metzger, Forage Specialist with Millborn Seeds. Thank you for watching.
