Religious Kids More Selfish Than Atheist Ones

  • A new study suggests that children brought up in religious household are less generous and are more judgmental than their secular peers. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian (The Point), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show), and Mark Thompson hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
Do you believe the results of this study? Do people need religion in order to be moral? Let us know in the comments below.
    Read more here: www.oregonlive.com/faith/2015/...
“When it comes to teaching kids the Golden Rule, Sunday school might not be the best bet.
A new study in the journal Current Biology found children in religious households are significantly less generous than their non-religious peers.
At the same time, religious parents were more likely than non-religious ones to consider their children empathetic and sensitive to the plight of others.
It's a common assumption in the United States that faith goes hand-in-hand with goodness. The Pew Research Center reported last year that 53 percent of Americans think it's necessary to believe in God to be moral.”

***** fanaticism is different from the more mundane form of religion which usually takes the form of regular or semi-regular history of religious observance within the context of a healthy balanced lifestyle.
If you have a job, a spouse, and some kids, you're probably not going to blow stuff up in the name of religion no matter *which* one it may be.
If you're dirt poor, mentally ill, or otherwise come from a troubled background, *that* is when you start to see risk factors for religiously motivated aggression.

The point is that religious fanaticism itself conditions the psyche to be egotistical, regardless of the underlying belief system.

I think the biggest thing here is to actually look at the founders. They felt religion was an obstacle to human reasoning and constructive thinking. That it invited casting judgement rather than solving problems.
I think the US has this a lot and a great example is the prison system. It is build to punish even though we know that helping people get a better life will have a much higher chance of succeeding of them getting a better life and not doing illegal things anymore. However even though we know this as a fact getting past the idea that we should just sinners and punish them is very hard.
Another example is the idea of the "work ethic" where instead of trying to figure out why people don't want to work or why a system is not working we just judge them.
The problem though is that the elite likes Christianity for this feature. If you judge others rather than solving problems that means the ones beneffiting from those problems are shielded. We might cast judgement on the oligarchy but they are at the top of the system so that doesn't count for anything. If anything it can even be that we judge them positively because of their power just like we used to do with the divine right of kings.
Divine right is kind of circular logic. Where the kings have power because they have divine right and they have divine right because they have power.

I can't speak for all religions, but I can speak from what I've seen. You can say you have a value, but it's much harder to live out a value. The main value that comes from the teachings of Jesus is loving others like you love yourselves. This is very difficult and requires much balance.
Of course it follows that if kids of Christians are behaving more selfishly than secular kids it's not a fault of the teachings of Jesus, it's the fault of the parents not living out the values Jesus taught.

It would be equally a rude generalisation if a study was conducted which seemingly proved that Christians were more moral than atheists, which I don’t believe. I’ve met lovely atheists who I consider my family and horrible Christians, and vice versa. People most of the time are not affected by their beliefs, (or lack thereof) so yeh.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

The thing though is that modern Christianity justifies it's own existence and it's own excesses by saying it improves morality. If it does not then that's still major. If religion does not improve morality why should they be exempt from the transparency requirements other non-profits need to abide by? Why should we defer to them on questions of morality? Why should they be given special privilege in regards to free speech? Should we allow governments to force Christian ideals onto children if it doesn't improve their morality?
Religion doesn't just exist in a void. It's a powerful thing and it justifies it's power by saying Christian people are more moral than non-Christian ones. So rather it harms morality or does nothing for it the result is still the same. Which is that the justification for it's power is illegitimate.

As a Christian, I really have to take my lumps on this one, and hopefully learn. I hope other Christians do the same.
Also, one more thing to note on the study. I've ready that some of the smaller religions(in terms of people tested) were removed from the study because they couldn't get a large enough sample size. So this really does boil down to Christians/Muslims/Non-religious.

  • @bluelightning25

Although this is an interesting finding, the study in itself does not mean a whole lot due to poor reporting. There was a less than adequate discussion of the study limitations and a poor explanation of the study methods/ strategies to minimize selection/systematic bias. For example, the layout of the article does not follow a typical logical paper format and there is no discussion of sampling and recruitment. Since this was a cross-sectional study, causal inference is already difficult to make. Thus, a thorough discussion of dealing with systematic biases both statistically and through systematic sampling is warranted. Also if anyone has read the journal article, the standard deviations from the outcome measures are quite large, so although the results are statistically significant, I am not so sure they are clinically or practically relevant. Basically the results of this study would have to be re-done in order to obtain any truthful insights about the moral/altruistic nature of religious persons. Also, the predictive model only explained less than 20% of the variance in their altruism measure, and that was when age, SES, country of origin, etc were included.

    • @bluelightning25
      @bluelightning25 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Matthew Bui I also want to add that in general, challenges exist in comparing religious vs. non-religious individuals as a scientist would have to somehow account either using descriptive statistics or adding a separate variable in the predictive model to address those how regularly practice structured religion and those who do not. Lastly, according to Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development, most children between the ages of 5-12 would be at the Conventional Stages (1- Conformity or 2- Law and Order). Children at this age basically do things to conform or because they are following the rules they have been taught. They aren't even at the stages where morality is fully developed and most individuals do not even make it to the final stage. These factors have all not been taken into account in this study. A better way to conduct this study would be to look at children and evaluate altruism over time using a validated measure in a prospective cohort, following participants into adulthood. That would be a better methodological approach.

I understand it is a study, and there are outlying factors. But I do have to say it is an unfair study. I was raised in a catholic/christian home. It was so religious that when I came out as pagan I was forced to read the bible over the summer. I am incredibly religious as a pagan, but I like to believe I'm as charitable and moral as anyone else. I give help to those who need it, and I rarely put myself first. I think there is bias in this mostly because religion has many forms and teachings. I think it has more to do with the person themselves. You can blame your parents for how you turn out, but you -can- raise yourself. Take what your parents say, but make your own morals. This study is just an excuse.

The experiment that guy mentions (about how you secretly wish you could do the things you judge other people for) is bullshit - think about the methodology of that. How could they possibly reach that conclusion? And - even more sigh-worthy - how could they mean it about people in general and not about a specific culture or cultural trait?
I don't think he's lying, but he's probably talking about someone else's opinions (from somebody he respects, or is generally respected in his/her field) or a philosophical tract or something. I seriously doubt it's experimental research.

it was a sticker test and the kids pick and chose which ones they wanted but were told that not all the other kids were able to choose. but did they take into account of how much the child in the experiment enjoyed stickers. i can beleive that a five year old is more likely to be selfish with stickers than a twelve year old.

Umm no. The study its is not a double blind study which the independent and dependent variables are tested thoroughly. The reason it never will is because Chicago (USA), Toronto (Canada), Cape Town (South Africa), Istanbul and Izmir (Turkey), Amman (Jordan), and Guangzhou (China) are culturally different. China for example has a very controlled population in how to behave and different customs. Also the fact that they are children completely depends on the area of which they were at that could be effected from like Chicago which has high crime rates. Places with higher crime tends to make people more selfish then less-violence places. The study itself is to vague in its variables in the study to be considered any proof and the study itself doesn't exclaim to say that. This a case like the before where the did a study on video gamers and then they claimed gamer are sexist. The fact is people take every study written for your own agenda and don't even know how it works.
Also to quote the study itself if you actually read it.
"That 4-year-old children donated as much as they did, however, is quite remarkable. Although it is possible that children felt more pressured than adults to behave altruistically due to socialization pressures from the interviewers or nearby teachers, every effort was made to allay their concerns by assuring children that donating stickers was optional and that decisions would be completely anonymous. Neither interviewer ever knew how many stickers a particular child donated."
Here you read where they admit that the independent variables were something that could have influence the children in behaving a certain way. But you didn't read the story at all did you?

Yeah, must've been their parents' fault they turned out that way. It's too bad you never reach an age where you can think for yourself so that you're not forced to be completely molded by your parents your whole life. Well I'm glad we have this study to tell all the religious people that they're objectively bad parents. Maybe we could do more studies to find out if the adults behave the same way. Then we can go and tell them all they're bad people as well as bad parents because they're religious. Won't change anything because they're that way because of their parents. But hey, maybe those of us raised in a non-religious household can't help but want to stick in their faces. Y'know, because of our parents.

+Internet Userperson actually it's not, it's done by collective data from across the world, including China, Middle East, USA, Europe...
also - you don't need this study to know the findings are already true. Just look at decades of political data. It is a well-known fact that majority of Christians vote for Republican party, while majority of atheists vote for Democrats.
And the Republican party's motto towards the poor is basically: if you are poor, that's your own problem. You just need to work harder.

How can this be fully accurate when "religious people" aren't even suppose to act like that?! And clearly, religious people who are like that are hypocrites! These idiots are unfairly generalizing a group of people!

    • @---yg1wv
      @---yg1wv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Freshsink950 Christianity, for example, is extremely contradictory. There is no one correct way to be a christian. Christians literally can not follow all of the instructions of the bible. You cant simply dismiss the selfish theists are not true theists because they act in a way that you dislike.
This seems to be the case, to some degree or another, in most religions.

I'm 28 and recently lost my religion. The process started in early 2014 and here I am. I can tell you there still so much religious toxin that I need to expel from myself, but I'm getting there.
It was probably the best thing I've ever done with my life. Religion instills such bad traits, such as 'humility' (bullshit lol, most people who seek to be humble are pompous asses) and 'regret' (repentance). Seriously, why would one want to be humble? We should strive to be realistic about ourselves and others, not 'humble' (aka being unfair to yourself). Repenting (regretting) is the other shitty thing - it makes us soooo unhappy and insecure. It forces us to constantly and unnecessarily doubt ourselves.
I believe there are people out there who can make religion truly 'work' for them and I give props to those people, but I know for sure that I'm not one of them (and most religious nuts aren't either).

It's great having someone who will forgive all your sins, they're really the perfect victims, but as there's likely other people that have cracked this code it's important that they get harsher punishments on earth.

  • @DoubIeRose

the article sighted in the description is biased and claims that there is a significant difference while the charts in the actual study show only a slight variance
furthermore, the age range on the study is incredibly large, covering two- arguably three- developmental stages of childhood. willingness to share fluctuates during that time and odds are this study actually ended up comparing two groups that average different ages.
TYT took a bogus study and used it as an excuse to speculate and bash religion for eight minutes. watching this channel is a complete waste of time

I remember going into that weird dark box to make my first confession in like second grade. The dude asked me if I needed to confess anything. I straight up said, "No. I already said sorry and learned my lesson for doing bad." He just sat on the other side of the old-people-smelling screen silent for like thirty seconds. I don't remember anything else after that, except I felt like a smug, happy little asshole for the rest of the day. That was the moment when I decided I didn't really want to be a part of this whole religion thing.

Interesting video. I haven't read the study, but I wonder if the results could have a different interpretation. For instance, could there be a reason other than selfishness for the lack of sharing? Maybe the issue is control. Many religious people emphasize self control, so maybe the children feel uncomfortable with liberal gift giving, as if they are being complicit in another's "sin".
