Salvaged this video, Barbel fishing from the Friday 25th August 2023. Barbel is actually 8 and half in net and net is around 1lb half. I thought this barbel looked between 5 and 6lb, but I don't catch barbel that often and it is possibly closer to 7lb. The Chub was a little deformed, I wondered if it was possibly a hybrid, but highly unlikely... 2nd take in video felt a lot bigger barbel, but clean break from a rock on the fluorocarbon leader. I've abandoned using this type of leader and reverted back to 10lb mono.
More details.
The first take was on a cube of spam, down stream of my 2nd rod, which was employed as a bait anchor. The fish was well rested in the net for a good 5 to 6 mins. during this period I setup my mat, forceps, sling and scales up. I opted not to use sling, because fish wasn't as big as I initially thought. From removing from water to unhooking, weighting, photo and release was less than a minute and a half. This fish was ready to go. I find giving a fish a good rest prior to unhooking significantly speeds up their recover, if they then jump around on the mat they will likely need resting up again, this one was very calm though. This method of resting is something I've learned to employ on bigger Pike and Carp and find it suits Barbel too.
Downstream Rod, Spam and Spicy feeder mix with krill micros in a river feeder and used Severn Valley Ambush pellets add to the mix.
Upstream Rod, Severn Valley Pellets (Hairrig) and a packed river feeder, packed to retain fresh Severn Valley Pellets (Bait Anchor) I empty this out into my downstream rods mix after a couple of sets. So keeping the upstream rods bait fresh and anchored in one general area.
This location I was using river cage 120g and 150g, in slower location my bait anchor is normally a 70g Maggot feeder of the Square Drennan type, this retain the pellets perfectly.
I had issue with camera footage and had to recover it from corrupted memory stick, sadly I forgot to clean lens on bank camera, hence the blur.
