    Somewhere between Joystick Johnny and "I'd rather be on my computer than anything else" kid, I'm thinking there's a writer with an unusual bent towards getting boys to say double entendres.

    • @Juxtavarious
      @Juxtavarious 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you have to have it explained to you the sexual innuendo of a teenage boy openly admitting he spends more time on his computer than anything else, then you need to do a little light reading.

      Heh, like me having to watch WWII era training videos in the Army in the 90's. That's exactly the kind of out-of-date crap you get with any institutionalised teaching. Thank -God- Al Gore for the Information Superhighway!
      I saw that third one once before on TH-cam while looking for something for my computer illiterate parents. I didn't use it because it doesn't fucking tell you anything at all.
      It just makes it worse by having a bunch of douchebags acting as if computers are some kind of mystical, magical, super-complicated technology you have to be really, really smart to understand. A stupid notion - common and promulgated by idiots at the time - that ironically is the limiting belief holding most of the older generation back from even trying to understand computers.
      The human race has understood the underlying concept of computers and have been trying to build one for centuries before my parents were born - but they think you have to be born after 1970 to understand them - now that's irony for you. It's more like 1770.

      I was born in '83, and I don't mean the future like some youtube commenters these days. Back then, the web was something that you got in your face when climbing a tree. Life was so much calmer back then, in the 80's. No mobile phones either... I climbed a lot of trees back then.

  • @meyakabrown4725
    @meyakabrown4725 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's funny how we began to deal with the Age of Technology. This was the first time cell phones, computers, and videogames began to go on a rampage and explode in popularity and become a integral part of our lives. It's also funny just how fucking clueless the majority of the population was with this kind of power :P

    • @puffnisse
      @puffnisse 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Illier1 I guess, but it was not only E.T that ruined Atari. The other cause was that it existed like 10 diffrent consoles att the same time, so costumers did not know what to buy, and that lead to that game developers did not get that much money, wich lead to the crash.

      I remember it both ways. Which is to say, "educational" videos are always cheesy, but also, I don't remember anyone dressing like that past 1994. Seriously, #2? I knew it would be on this list because is SO deserves to be, but I was 16 in 1997 (the year that was released) and the same year my family got the internets (after toying with WebTV, dear god the horror) and we did not dress that way. At least not since the early 90s. WTF is with the denim? I have to assume these were shot in Canada, which was living 10 years behind the US at the time. Or, at least it seemed fashion-wise.

    That first video was literally what they showed us in grade school, and being kids we all took it to heart. That was, until we actually went online

    I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is one of the best games of the 90s. Newfound respect to Cracked for mentioning it (or the book).

    Even back then, I found these videos and PSA's absolutely hilarious. Then again, I had jumped from an "Atari 2600" to a "Commodore 64" in the 80's so I was already using dial up BBS's on that. Then, in '91, I got my first IBM PC. and was on dozens of dial up BBS's for years with that. Eventually I got on the internet through services like Delphi and such. Everything was so easy for me and there was no "mystery" to it. There was no need for this "people getting sucked into computers where they whized by "EXTREME!!!" computer graphics" for me. I just found every one of these videos laughable and when you really looked at the content they taught, they didn't really teach much and they were usually full of misinformation and scaremongering. They would often confuse computer newbies more than help. The best way to help teach a computer newbie back then was to sit them with someone who knew what they were doing to teach them.

    I had to watch "how computers work" two times in my tech class last year. I guess it's just the default substitute movie for my class... Can't believe they haven't updated it yet though. So much for "high-tech"

    I remember watching the video in the #2 slot in elementary school before we took our " Type To Learn" class. Then we got a handout to take home about internet parental controls. Thanks to that handout, I got stuck on AOL Kids for the next two years. Thank you, Michael Swaim, for calling up such an obscure memory. And fuck AOL Kids.

    Didn't get internet access till I got to the city in maybe 1998. I can't say whether or not I'm glad I wasn't able to watch 5 thru 2 but I would've loved to have watched number 1 during Friends' heyday. That would have been more hilarious than right now.

    "You sure about that? How are you going to keep the episodes fresh?"

    I remember the whole suck in the internet thing. It was funny has hell cause it has always reminded me how TV was presented at one time as a soul sucking item, which was once dominated by the (photo not video) camera. It's amazing how each step in our technology we get the idea of it sucking us in.
