    As an ABC with a canto background, I have always struggled to speak mandarin even after taking multiple classes in college. Finally I feel seen and can understand a simpler way to absorb what I learn and apply it! Keep these vids coming! ❤

    I'm new to this channel and the first video I watched was the 2 letters video. It's kinda crazy how it can change you from this funny and cheerful guy to a depressed one (wise or something, i forgot what the word). I feel the same way as you did when my grandma passed away, nothing. As I go through the video more, you woke me from the thing that I should prioritize, and it is a good reminder to get my priority straight and didn't get drifted away again. Hope that video can help the other realize this thing.

    Hey guys, awesome video. I'm actually going backwards and trying to learn canto with a Mando background and resources for people like me are basically non existent. I was able to watch this video and reverse engineer learning canto and surprisingly it worked pretty well! Going to try surprise my Cantonese wife now.
    If you do ever consider making a mando to canto video just know there are people like me out there!

    Really enjoy the videos on your channel. Older ABC guy learned to speak Taishanese/Cantonese by speaking with relatives and friends over the years, but I never really delved in to the why's and what's of the languages. Your channel has given me more insight as to why certain words and word orders are the way they are and how they should be applied.

    Awesome video Sheldon. Your choice of the word gwailo did not convey racism or hate, and when you used the "gwailo" to reference that they have to work much harder to study rather than us, it was an easy way to understand what you wanted to convey to us (the target audience which you clearly stated in the beginning)

    • @cantotomando
      @cantotomando  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thanks 😅 I've gotten some flack for gwai lo but I really only mean to use it in a way to help convey the message to Cantonese speakers. I've thought for a long time and this was the only word I could come up with.
      - lao wai (this is not a Cantonese word and most Cantonese ppl would have no idea what this means)
      - white guy/ x race person (this is worse)
      - sai Jan 西人 this is commonly used in Cantonese now rather than 鬼佬. It is the word I'd choose ideally, but most people would have no idea what this means based on the jyutping and the average Cantonese American can't read Chinese characters. It's also ambiguous because technically I'm also a 西人.
      - foreigner (this wouldn't make sense)
      - Americans (wouldn't make sense to Cantonese Americans)
      - non Chinese people (this is the closest but it's wordy and can mean different things to different people)
      I truly don't mean harm when I say Gwai Lo, and I've never heard of it as an 'n' word equivalent. If anyone has any suggestions for good substitutes I'd be happy to hear.

    Good video, but you should find a substitute for gwailo . It sounds like a 1930's newsreel using the 'n-word' casually , even when the speaker was intending to be condescending . Times have changed. The mandarin lau-wai sounds better.

    • @Shojikisama
      @Shojikisama 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      uhhhhhhhh is this clown comparing the n-word which is linked to slavery and other hideous history to gwailo? Sorry man, as much as it sucks, that's just how canto people call white people that. We've got names for all kinds of people gwailo, hakgwai, ah cha, bun por, ga mui, all these words are pretty much embedded in canto culture and sure you can argue you should call them "oi gwok yun" but the realism is that we call them that, and of course there is no harm or hate embedded in the word gwailo. In Japan there is a word "gaijin" with mad stigma, but Japanese people mean no harm when they say it. very similarly there is no n-word nuance with the word "gwailo".
      Actually you're probably one to get all antsy so I probably should've used "caucasian" right? Btw, laowai (老外) still sounds pretty bad to me. similar to "gaijin 外人" refering to these other people as "outsiders" and not being on the "inside"
      tldr; don't compare gwailo to the n-word, the history and nuance is completely different. Awesome video Sheldon, we know you didn't say the word with racist intention.
