  • In this short, Pilot Nick shares what he believes is the most important helicopter pilot skill. The ability to have "the touch" is something that every helicopter pilot should work towards. The touch refers to the intuitive feel that a pilot develops for the helicopter controls, which allows them to fly the aircraft smoothly and safely.
To develop the touch, the pilot would need to spend a lot of time at the controls of the helicopter. As they spend more time flying, the movements of the collective pitch, cyclic pitch, and other helicopter flight controls become second nature. They develop a sense of touch that helps them make adjustments in the helicopter's movement, ensuring that they are always in control of the aircraft.
Being an intuitive helicopter pilot takes practice, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to perfecting your craft. It requires patience and the willingness to learn from your mistakes. he touch is something that every pilot can achieve with time and practice.

I have come to the conclusion that to best equate touch to the cyclic and collective. Is to shoot accurately a pistol or revolver. The same touch sensitivity criteria applies to touch sensitivity on Helicopter controls.
I learned this as a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam. Where I used both daily to stay current and accurate. I learned how your hands and feet are consustently placed on on the helicopter controls. Makes a huge difference. You have to have a firm hand but gentle touch.

Don’t those Airbus helicopters has a SAS or other stability control system to aid the pilots?
As in collective pulled the tail rotor pitch kicks in and the pilot can leave feet flat on the floor.
Now fly the likes of an ole Bell 206 or a UH-1 and yes, feet, left hand on collective and three fingered of the cyclic indeed. 👍
