The great thing about version 2 of the El Cap is that version 1 gets cheaper and they still sound great, So unless you need the new functionality just buy an old one.

Only guitar players seek the sacred sounds of nearly broken machines. The lengths we go through to replicate sounds of the ancient and imperfect tape or oilcan delay machines is beyond ridiculous, almost cult like. And now the designers have nailed it, with incredible detail - the sound is nothing short of amazing and true. I love Tape Delay pedals, especially Strymon's offerings. I have a Volante, Nightsky and a Deco from those guys. Catalinbread Adineko oilcan is on my board too, it's freakish good for ambient ramblings, Howard is a Madman- love his stuff. Great show guys!

Hi guys! Awesome show as always. I think it's time to do a show on the Flint, is one of the oldest and most loved strymon pedals. It has never been featured on the show and it could be interesting to see if it still holds up to the newer reverb or tremolo pedals on the market. It was one of the first harmonic tremolo pedal, I'm really interested in tour thoughts.

Hey Mick, for what it's worth, getting to deep dive into the minutiae of things is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT why I love your channel. The irony is that, the more your face says "I'm going to spend the day testifying under oath", the more likely it is that I'm going to be absolutely thrilled because we're going into the weeds on a pedal's functions. I mean, the combination of your and Dan's personalites, coupled with both of your depth of knowledge, along with the incredibly tasteful way you both play... It's all good, my friend. Of course, I recognize that there is probably a small percentage of viewers who will take to this same comment section to mewl that an episode wasn't zippy and fast-paced enough for them but, please remember that Richard Gere was married to Cindy Crawford and that, one day, he woke up, looked at Cindy sleeping naked next to him, and thought "Oh, I can't stand another day of this..." In other words, people are thick.

Great job. To my ears the one thing I heard in the El Cap V2 was the guitar itself sounded fuller and just nicer if you are just talking about tone in and of itself. I'd be real interested to hear V1 and V2 side by side with a very low level, low repeat, relatively "background" sort of barely on delay and just hear how the guitar itself sounds. It may be the reason Pete decided to go with the newer JFET preamp. I detect something fairly significant is happening there. Other wise, Fender = quite good, Strymon = excellent, Roland Space = spectacular as we suspected they might shake out. Well done.

Thanks for the video gents! I tried SO hard to bond with many delay pedals over the last few years. This channel definitely inspired that journey. First was echosex baby… had an incredible “drum” delay sound but didn’t have tap tempo, then tried a JHS bucket brigade one… it’s modulation was just a toggle and was way way too crazy sounding, tried the new universal audio delay pedal, I wanted to like it’s tape emulation but ended up finding it “thin” sounding, finally landed on the chase bliss thermae. I don’t even use the thermae for its “bleeps and bloops”, it’s regular delay sound, it’s modulation, it’s hi/low resonant filter… it’s simply the best delay tone I’ve ever heard, period. I’m madly in love with it.

All the new ARM processors have DSP functions built in. DSP math is pretty basic stuff you have an array of samples multiplied and summed with associated coefficient and then output that as a new sample. This was the basis for LaPlace & Fourier in 1820. They of course never thought we would be doing this with processors and fixed or floating point math and they assumed the # of taps (length of the array) was infinite.

Fun show guys. Couple thoughts- yes- you are right that it is impractical to cart around an RE201. That said, there is something just awesome about it. I'd say that the sound of the repeats on the el cap (and my volante) is like "she she she"- a focus on the high mids- and the RE201 is more like "thrum thrum thrum" - more thick lower mids. Maybe this is what Mick often calls "chewy" midrange? Don't know- but it sounds glorious! Second thought- the thing about digital is that there will always be a newer, "better" "updated version" that is better than the previous version. In theory, you will always be able to anticipate a "better" future digital thing. But the analog thing is different- it IS the thing, if you know what I mean. You will never get a more RE201 than the physical thing- it is a philosophical end in and of itself- while the digital copies will always be "close", but people will also always assume that at some later point there will be a "closer" version. In other words, you can never get more real than the real thing, and you will never get totally real with a digital copy- even if someday the digital copy may in fact sound objectively better- it won't matter- it will never be real.

Best delay pedal on the market, at least in terms of tape and analog. I sold my v1 to nab the volante. I’ve many, many analog and tape echoes, including the Belle epoch, Belle epoch deluxe, boss re-20, boss re-202, line 6 dl4 mk ii, boss dm-2w, boss dm-101, Ibanez echo shifter, Catalinbread Echorec, benson delay, UA starlight, way huge Supa Puss, maybe a couple of others in forgetting. The el Capistan beats them all. It’s just magical. The only pedals I’ve tried that can go neck and neck are the Asheville adg-1 and a 90’s deluxe memory man reissue. Digital is kind of its own thing in my book, as tape and analog add more grit and characteristics, and even then I’d probably say the Strymon dig is the best in the pack. That company clearly knows what it’s doing when it comes to time based effects. The flint is another favorite of mine, although I’d say the UA golden has the reverbs beat by just a hair.

I'd love to see you guys with a Copicat one day. You often name check it as an option but I've never seen you use one; such great units and still borderline affordable. I've had a number of the Super IC (solid state) models over the years, fantastic sounds. I recently picked up a genuine 'loft find' Mk II valve Copicat for very few coins and it's monster! The pre-amp is worth the price on it's own, just a bog standard ECC83 centre biased but it drives the front end of my amp like a supernova. With reference to what Dan said about the tape on the Space Echo running constantly - joy of joys - the Mk II has an on/off switch for the tape motor. It's a game changer. Why don't more tape echo's have a switch on the motor? Seems like a no-brainer to me. Another grand show lads; happy new year, and get thyselves a Copicat!

That's the single biggest usability failing of this otherwise fairly easy to use pedal (given all its flexibility).

One thing that would get me to consider upgrading my v1 El Cap is control over the stereo output mix. Set wet/dry levels independently on each out rather than always getting the same mix from both outputs. Volante can do that, but would be nice to have on the smaller and simpler El Cap.

The updated input in the v2s is subtle but I feel like I actually connect with the pedals now where there was something that I just never really vibed with Strymon before. I doubt the v2 Lex ever leaves my board thanks to the mix knob

Agree, just got the V2 after trying and selling the V1 5 years ago. V2 has the clarity and immediacy that I felt V1 was robbing from my tone. The pedal now feels transparent - really enjoy it. I guess that's the new JFET preamp.

Fabulous preamble- not boring. Always wanted an el cap, but went helix a few years ago.
Borrowed a victory sherrif for a couple of pub rock gigs and just made me want a pedalboard and some valves. Not unhappy with helix cos I occasionally do deps where it’s flexible is brilliant. But for pub rock fun ♥️

I worked in a Music Store that closed at 8PM. By 9PM all the local stores would close. More than one time I waited until about 9:15 PM and CRANKED a SUNN Model T with a 6-12 cabinet and played a HUGELY LOUD 'A' chord with tones of tube distortion. What made it magical was every guitar in the store b,oth acoustic and electric, were all tuned to 'A"...amazing how long it rang!!! LOL

The preamp section of Roland SE makes that tele sound much better. Tighter, fuller with great definition between the effect and dry signal. Nothing beats the original, other sound anemic in comparison.

Hi MIck, I sent you a comment on Patreon about the Jazzmaster you played in this week's VCQ. Please read when you get time. A Jazzmaster dive be an interesting idea for a show. How radically different a Jazzmaster is to a Strat and Tele because of the pickups, the taper type and high pot value of the volume and tone compared to a Strat and Tele, which give so many tones. How it has less sustain (some love it for that) because it's designed to mimic an arch top, higher bridge, rocking bridge and angled neck (proper set up). How the tremolo when set up is one of the best ever. Ok shutting up about Jazzmaster now. Just hate seeing it sitting in the corner being misunderstood. haha. Have a great weekend.

I used to snub Strymon as being over the top. The El Cap sounds amazing though, and if I could toggle thru presets on it quickly versus only having a favorite switch - I would buy one in heartbeat as my main delay.

I have both versions. Through a guitar amp you will never notice the difference. Having reverb separate is helpful. MIdi for presets good, Both have a 'favourite preset so they give you instant access to two sounds without midi. Worth the extra cost? Probably not. They are both excellent. I have a Bella epoch deluxe and have to say I prefer the sound of that EP in it. All are top bar.

    Mick,
Scott said that, sometime during graduation, Jeff (Rest In Peace) was asked to give a class but declined the offer. Scott said it could have been something for the history books, of sorts and that maybe what he would have taught would have been of importance. Still majorly bummed out over the whole thing, having just lost a friend on life support on January 1st and hearing yesterday that someone else I knew years ago passed away recently too. I think everyone is still in shock over Jeff being gone. He left so much behind for us all but still had so much to give. I do not mean to sound greedy in my saying that. What I meant is that music just seemed to pour out of him. He left us a lot to figure out the mystery of and I have to say that it's an honor to have been alive while he was still going strong. I'm betting that after we are all long gone, people are going to look at his body of work, and film footage, and still be gobsmacked. My condolences to you, his many band mates, family and friends.
    Stephen

I'm a huge fan of the mk1 - it has remained on my board through many iterations! But one major flaw I wish they had corrected in mk2 was the way the delays cut out when you tap the tempo. Was really hoping they'd change it to adjust like you would on the time knob. Pretty annoying oversight for groups that play without click tracks :/

Hi, Dan and Mick. Great video!! Thanks for everything you two do (it always brings a smile)! 😊
I think this may be my first time commenting, but I am just curious on a couple things.
    1. What guitar stands do you use or recommend? I am currently looking for one and discovering that some cause issues with nitro finishes. Appreciate any insight you may have.
    2. I have two tube amps (Friedman Dirty Shirley 40w combo and Greer Apache 5w). I have been thinking lately of try to sell them as well as a few pedals with the goal of distilling my rig into one amp and just a few essential pedals. Do you have a recommendation for an great amp and any essential pedals to would achieve Jerry Garcia tones and be bedroom friendly? (Note: I think the Apache may be the one amp I need, but for some reason I have been on a G.A.S. quest)
