Most people don't buy knives to split wood with..lol..and it seemed to work well with everything else you did..and for most people that will be fine. I'm not that picky about knives . I'd buy it.
Your vid contradicts your verbal criticisms of the grind! You made short work of the tasks you performed!!! Glad I watched it and can form my own opinion!
Have you heard of the Esee AH-1 survival arrowhead? It's an arrowhead that Esee has made that I've seen piggybacked a lot to say the 4 or 5 or izula. I purchased it not to long ago if only because it looked cool. But it could be thrown in a bug out bag, or just kept on you as a little knife. It might be worth doing a little video on. What do you think?
CDS has the Celtiberococo and Celtiberoblack which has the high saber grind with a realky nice sheath and is a great looking knife. It is in the gauntlet now. I hope to see your video on it soon. It is my top pick for purchase at the moment.
It didn't look like it was struggling that much in your usage footage like it looked like it made really good feathers but I understand that I didn't feel it but it looked like you were getting desirable results. Just my observations.
+Talking Blades Agreed. It's almost as if the audio commentary contained in this video was for a totally different knife review! People sometimes have subtle biases that override what they're actually seeing with their own eyes. Ultimately, any tool that does exactly what you ask it to do is a good tool.
Same thing I was thinking he seems to be showing bias against this type of grind. It sure looked like it was doing the job well for him from what I am seeing! It batons wood pretty well and he only shows one piece that did not put up much "binding" like he indicated. It looked like it did a fine job to me. The damn thing is NOT AN AXE! Find smaller wood instead of beating the crap out of your primary blade! I myself own this same knife with a black handle and have NO PROBLEM with it. The hollow grind sharpens easy if you know how to PROPERLY sharpen a knife. also the hollow grind will come in handy for preparing meat maybe a deer or other animal you are using for food. you will get better cuts of meat with a hollow grind.
Thank you for posting this video. I think I would rather opt for Tops Silent Hero. I love the CDS survival knive, but I am not so sure about the CDS Explorer knife. You are right about the shape and grind. Too bad I can't test out this knife before purchasing it.
Looked like it preformed as good as most other knives you looked at. I dont hate hollow grinds but rather have saber. Looked like it was hogging wood off in the carving. I bet it's a boss at skinning.
Say Heah Aaron, I just got my new Battle Horse Attitude, I'm not posting because I got it, but how similar it look's to this Explorer. I had my Attitude Slightly Curved and I also had the drop point lowered so now it look's like the some of the high end bushcraft knivrs, But I like the blade longer so I went with the Attitide. I also asked for a high scandi grind. It's made out of O1, 5 1/4" blade and 3/16th's" thick, I also had a White Handle with Blue Liners, I wanted to match it with my Smaller Himalayan Imports M-43 Khukuri and so far it's a great match-up. The sheath is a black square bottom deep seating dangle and the whole package, quality/price ratio is unbelievable, I really got my $$$ worth. It came out spot on and there is nothing I would change on it.
Looks like they've just grabbed a fewthings they've seen on a few other knives, like the ramp, the swedge, that forward lanyard/guard, and thrown them on a big blade, without really having any vision or direction about how it'll actually use
Hey Aaron you should check out the Schrade Schf51, And The Schrade Schf52. I'd love to see you review those two knives, because I'm debating on getting one but just need more information. Thank you.
Hi Gideons, I would like that you make a review of anyone knife of the Spanish brand Cudeman. I recommend the models Spartan, Boina Verde, MT1 or MT5. Cool knives all of them. You'll be surprised and satisfied.
As watched you use the Knife it looked to me as it did great..look we know you don't really like hollow grind knives...but this Knife looked Great and did everything you put it to.i like this Knife
The style of knife appears to be that of a tactical knife, which a hollow grind is good for cutting meat/ flesh. A tactical knife is mean for defense or offensive melee and needs a strong point for penetration with a slicing grind. It's the correct grind for this type of knife design. The problem is what *you* want to do with the knife. It's the wrong grind for you.
while I agree on hating the low hollow grind and definitely better performance with a mid saber grind, I disagree with it being modeled after the Tops Silent Hero. It's more of a replica of a Cudeman Boina Verde, which is Cudeman's factory version of a knife made by Angel Corts, and has been around way before the Silent Hero came out. The snap is also a PITA on CDS leather sheaths (although overall quality is very good IMO), I just cut them off and rivet a regular strap at the throat.
Pedro Perez ......all of 3 has been around wayyyyyy before the silent hero came out. But you know, they think that they invented every thing in the word and much better....any way....
I am honestly flabbergasted by your review of the knife. Normally i respect your views but you review is lop sided. I have that knife and other Spanish knives and in particular this one where our wonderings take us into the bush and atlantic coast. We never baton or have ever needed to baton with a knife. I have used it to make kindling and fire sticks and a multitude of camp tasks including chopping off small branches. Bring those so called survival knives that you rate so highly and come a chop some of our dry woods here. Its goodbye knife whether it is USA, Spanish, Taiwanese or any of the others. The Cold Steel machetes bounce off and tremble with vibrations. The knife has served me very well and normal sharpening it retains a fantastic edge.
Here comes the hate. I think as far as hollow grinds go Schrade may be the only ones who can make it work. JMO Thanks for the honest review God bless you.
Hollow grind knives..everyone seem to not like them..I was the same way but just because people on youtube said hollow grind knives are horrible...but then I got a Sharade knife and it was a Hollow grind and it work out Great it made Feather sticks and cut through everything I put in front of it...and Baton through wood Great no Problems...look sometimes you have to try using things for yourself before you really know the Truth...
Dude, I love your videos and reviews, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I have a pretty good collection of knives, and the one that I love the most and has been my go-to knife for everything and anything that I do outdoors...and in a SHTF survival scenario I'd bet my life on has the exact same grind as that CDS Explorer. I just don't like the knives with the blade grinds that make them look like a damn kitchen butcher knife...I just don't like it. The ones I have with the same blade grind as the CDS is what I'll stick with. It's NEVER failed me, and it's ALWAYS got the job done...no matter what I use it for.
I review a lot of Spanish made knives and for some reason the Spanish really love putting hollow grinds on their knives. Ok not all companies in Spain do this and I've got several (reviewed too BTW) full flat grinds and a recent sabre grind- but I would agree here with you, a FFG or sabre on that knife would rock totally.
Oh yeah, of course hollow grinds cut very well as less friction all things being equal but in the US market of chop chop chop then sure hollow grinds are not the best for that, what axe head is hollow ground?
...or 20 moras, or 1000 plastic knives for birthdays cake, ´of course you can. But is not the same quality by far. I have it, is really good. Gideon forgot to say something (he have to put the word "IMO" before the title conclusion).
This video is quite old and probably the knife is no longer available but I find the review a little biased. Bringing to the table words like Europe or Spain does not help. It’s ok if you don’t like the knife but the rest looks like bc. Both Tops and CDS are good brands. I love hollow grinds, but not on medium large bush knives. My edc Kizer has a beautifully awesome hollow grind for all food prep and stuff but I would not use that for woods, mainly because you need the right tool for the right job and im not slicing meat with a knife that size so really there is no point. The handles are very pretty tho. Im shocked that you like ed this to the silent hero, this reminded me of the tahoma field knife more. Just personal opinion. Nice review =)

I am sending this comment at the 1:20 minute mark. As soon as I saw the short hollow grind I said, NOPE! Gonna fail. WHY do people use that grind for "serious"outdoor knives? Especially those purported to be survival knives that HAVE to perform well in wood accomplishing many different types of cutting tasks? This knife looked like it was doing the tasks you were putting it through rather well if you ask me! Maybe for some reason you just dont like a hollow grind knife. I actually own this same knife only with a black handle and I do not have any issue with it at all. it even sharpens nicely. And that hollow ground blade will cut meat great for preparing food. Mine batons wood with no problem but if you dont like how it works for you just use smaller wood. I only bat wood if I cant find smaller stuff around and that is (very rare) Why beat the crap out of your primary knife just to cut firewood. If anything carry a back up Knife or even a small camp axe! I would recommend this knife with no problem other then that snap on the sheath and even that is not that bad once you break it in or maybe put a drop of oil on it! I sure dont have to struggle with mine like you were doing in the vid! I can pop it loose with my thumb!
Sorry gideon, but not. Is arrogant to say that. This knives geometry-shapes , is used in Spain since hundreds and hundreds of years ago. I will look into it
Cool! Waiting your Cudeman video...! and congratulations to your channel
+enpemar thx!
If you like the look of the knife, but don't like the hollow grind, you can easily re-purpose the Hollow grind to a Scandinavian grind.
As watched you use the Knife it looked to me as it did great..look we know you don't really like hollow grind knives...but this Knife looked Great and did everything you put it to.i like this Knife
you are not alone Aaron. I got the same problem with my CDS,at first i was very impressed but after a couple of days i started hating this thing
Yep agreed!
Excellent knife .... !!!! ... Thanks for the nice review ... !!!! .. + 1 ....
I much prefer something other than hollow grind with most knives. as always great vid
+Cr0cket20 It is very rare that I ever like hollow grinds on my fixed blades, there are a few out there done right, but few and far between.
The second I saw it I thought "I hate the hollow grind"
+Jake Davis Yep!
+gideonstactical I can't stand hollow ground blades. All the shortcomings of a sabre and a ffg with none of the upsides
The only thing I see hollow grinds being good for besides chopping and cutting nylon would be food prep

Perhaps they would listen to your suggestion... Agreed has potential 👍
I had a conversation with them today. We will see what comes of it.
gideonstactical Any word on if anything came of your feedback?
Nice looking in many respects, I agree with your thoughts on the grind, tons of potential if they change it up a bit!
Right, hope they will.
You have to try the CDS axarquia.. Much much better grind and ergonomic
I like this blade! Spain have good knifes I see one on you tube and not remember name but that was best blade I ever see and cut, chop like no other!
Use a bit of vasoline on the button snap and it will pop open with one finger
Here comes the hate. I think as far as hollow grinds go Schrade may be the only ones who can make it work. JMO Thanks for the honest review God bless you.
Thanks!
Could a very skilled smith put a different grind on it, or would it require removing too much material?
Could a local Bladesmith re-profile it & save this contender?
I just won’t waste my time. Some many other options that don’t need that type of work on it.
Say Heah Aaron, The NV58 is a midiocker steel at best, similar to 440a.,,.p
Paul'ie 4X ....Noup is not.
so, if you sew a pull tab by that button at the top of the sheath, on the front of the leather...do you think that would help?
+Randy Yeager Probably not.
Hollow grind knives..everyone seem to not like them..I was the same way but just because people on youtube said hollow grind knives are horrible...but then I got a Sharade knife and it was a Hollow grind and it work out Great it made Feather sticks and cut through everything I put in front of it...and Baton through wood Great no Problems...look sometimes you have to try using things for yourself before you really know the Truth...
my Condor Hudson bay gives this knife a sneer and a sidewards glance
+Inquisition Haha
What is your opinion on the hollow grind of the cold steel SRK san mai III?
Looks tough to destroy. But does need a higher cheek
im looking for a bushcraft knife at about 130$,that is good for chopping tasks but also a good carver, any ideas?
Stamatopoulos George CDS gladius on Amazon is very nice
Ok guys, I need some help choosing a knife. Should I get the OKC Rat-7 or the Ka-bar Becker BK7? All insight is appreciated, thanks.
+Caleb Fechner RAT7 will be a better woods knife, BK7 better tactical/utility knife.
Thank you gideonstactical
What do you think about the CDS Axarquia?
do you think i could file it into a better grind?
Dude, I love your videos and reviews, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I have a pretty good collection of knives, and the one that I love the most and has been my go-to knife for everything and anything that I do outdoors...and in a SHTF survival scenario I'd bet my life on has the exact same grind as that CDS Explorer. I agree with you. The Explorer's grind is much stronger and more useful than the butcher's knife grind.
I review a lot of Spanish made knives and for some reason the Spanish really love putting hollow grinds on their knives. it looks like a nice knife but I can buy two like in kind blades from schrade for the money.
...or 20 moras, or 1000 plastic knives for birthdays cake, ´of course you can. But is not the same quality by far. I have it, is really good. Gideon forgot to say something (he have to put the word "IMO" before the title conclusion).
Those egros look perfect.
Super nice!
I'm buying the Silent Hero!! Thanks
+Kevin Kelly They are sweet!
This video is quite old and probably the knife is no longer available but I find the review a little biased. Bringing to the table words like Europe or Spain does not help. It’s ok if you don’t like the knife but the rest looks like bc.
Both Tops and CDS are good brands.
By the way there is a 2 years old review of the same knife (in German) and the results are plain to see.
Again, you certainly have the right to your own opinion, especially in your own video.
I think other than small hunting knives, butchering knives and some folders, hollow grinds should be outlawed lol. I think this is why buck changed the the thug's grind and Spyderco did the same with the manix 2...
Totally agree!
which axe has a hollow grind
Love this guy
Is this knife the same as the Jeo Tec 43?
The problem is not a hollow grind itself, but the shortness of it. And if you make a knife, that looks more like a prybar anyway, why put the weakest grind out there? Makes no sense. And if you think about sharpening the knife and removing metal over years, the short hollow grind becomes even shorter and stouter. The handles are very pretty tho.
Im shocked that you like ed this to the silent hero, this reminded me of the tahoma field knife more. Just personal opinion.
Nice review =)
+Olga Dachdecker Scandi grind is where it's at.
I do not agree with you it is a good survival knife whatever you say you not like it totally respectable, but there are many people who do like it,anaway for tastes colors.
An axe grind on the knife? LOL, hollow is the exact opposite of a convex grind.
+thegeneral123 usually axes have a wide hollow grind that goes into a convex
In the video you say that the grind is not good but in all the tasks the knife has behaved very well. I think you have a prejudice against this kind of grind and you're not going to let reality stand between you and your opinion.
I am sending this comment at the 1:20 minute mark. As soon as I saw the short hollow grind I said, NOPE! Gonna fail. WHY do people use that grind for "serious"outdoor knives? it reminds me of a mercworx knife!!
God video and god knive, saludos
I like this brand but more Miguel Nieto, Cudeman or Aitor.
It is a handsome and well made looking blade. Shame about the grind.
Right!
SWEET REVIEW DUDE!! If you ever have time my channel has some cool weapon reviews
+Riley Reynolds right on.
so much potential, so many missed steps.
Yep you got it!
+gideonstactical I am curious to see how they reply to this review.
this thing better explore some other options
I wouldnt discount the leather so quickly just because it is flexible. Most domestic leathers are in need of a good oiling or waxing right off the bat or they are pretty useless where many european leathers dont always need that. In reality those scabbards you listed as better quality are a poor grade of leather until oiled.
Just checked the price, they have balls trying to get the same money as a Tops lol
The price is reasonable if the grind.

www.worldknives.com/images/AN-58Steel.jpg here are the specs on the steel Aaron, Oh, Happy Thanksgiving to you your family and crew, , ,
Yeah, not a lot of good uses for this grind but someone, somewhere will love it and find a use... maybe someone who skins elephants LOL.
Haha
Axe grind???? Did u ever seen a axe? I see a dude useing gloves .............. damn......
talk about hit and miss, damn....
Still looks good though lol 😐
Looks like a rip off of Topps Silent Hero, with a crap grind
Not a rip off, but did take some of its features.
Sorry gideon, but not. Is arrogant to say that. This knives geometry-shapes , is used in Spain since hundreds and hundreds of years ago. You can find Spanish civil war knives like this, or your awesome and original Tops Silent Hero everywhere in any Spanish pawnshop. And this is just part of recent history. Then? Who took that from whom?, some times, a little humility comes in handy.
