    As an electrician and putting one of those chargers up I can say those covers are hard to take off. So probably the electrician broke it and felt bad because Elon signed it 😅.

    You actually have 50 Amps instead of 40 A installed judging by the breaker, but if your wiring is only rated up to 40 A, running the charger at 48A will eventually cause the wires to heat up.
    If this is the case, most good quality wires can operate at some Amps above its rating, its probably not an issue but defnatly something to keep an eye on.

    • @MW-gh3lt
      @MW-gh3lt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      If someone says they need 40A for their car charger, you install a 50A breaker and wire. If you try to draw 40A on a 40A breaker it will blow.

    • @ddgiant
      @ddgiant 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@MW-gh3lt based upon the 80% rule or the 125% rule, you are right at 40 amp draw you need a 50 amp breaker and wires. I am concerned about it now pulling 48 amps on a 50 amp breaker and wires.

    • @lemongavine
      @lemongavine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Assuming he has 6awg wire, the 50A breaker should still protect the wire. When the 48A charging gets too hot, the breaker should trip. I would be more concerned if he put a 60A breaker and kept the same wire. I would advise that he turn the charging amps on the car down to 40. Those extra 8 amps shouldn’t matter with overnight charging. 40A is still plenty fast.

    • @coreysullivan3490
      @coreysullivan3490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      When setting up the wall charger you tell it what size breaker you have. If you are getting 48A then you told it you have a 69A breaker. This is clearly not the case! How did the "licensed electrician" configure your charger for the wrong size breaker? Or did you just select the biggest option like Tim Allen?

    Dan you were only charging at 38 Amps with the old charger. (7:15) It says “38/40” so: 38 amps out of 40 available. Apparently there is a setting inside the old charger that you can set to a higher amperage, but your breakers are rated at 50 so that’s the maximum you can use. (It will probably break after a while on 48 because the wiring gets hot.) the new charger has 48 amps available but I never saw it counting up to that number in this video. So the 48 amps might be available, but assuming your old charger was at 38 amps I don’t think this new model will increase the charging speed and max out before reaching 48 amps.

    Did you do any research before you made this video? So much misinformation I don't know where to even begin... This old charger is rated to charge up to 80A continuous max when supplied by a 100A circuit breaker and associated wiring. The new charger is rated to charge up to 48A continuous max when supplied by a 60A circuit breaker and associated wiring. Since your original electrician installed a 50A circuit breaker and wiring, your old charger was limited to 40A continuous which meets electrical codes. Your new charger is now violating electrical codes since you've set it to 48A max with a 50A circuit breaker. This is more than the 80% continuous load requirement.

    Btw, it’s probably fine, but you only have a 50amp breaker, I would upgrade that to 60amp and make sure your wiring is the appropriate gauge if your going to run 48amp. I just installed one of the older versions of the charger and did exactly that and pulled new wire just to be safe. If you look at the spec sheets they’l tell you the same thing. Stay safe, new charger looks nice! Oh and btw, the reason the old chargers went to 80amp, is so you could daisy chain a second charger from that and split the load (40amp per vehicle) for simultaneous vehicle charging. It was intended for use by small hotels, businesses, bnb’s etc, people with huge garages and lots of Teslas, etc.

      @@darkceptor44 there is a little difference. You can charge wile you sleep but your internet need to be good now. Also it won't get better after night. Your car tho is charged after night. And going from 40 to 48 ampere will not half the time of charging.

      @@vegetayami from 40 to 48 I understand but the fact that it can go up to 80 and Tesla decided not to anymore, that is weird.
      The only thing I can think of is if they had accidents with that much amperage and had to limit for everyone, but still.
      Don't get me wrong I don't have a car either, I don't even have a desktop just a laptop. But I have to question these things because I know there is better technology.

    NOOO!!!! Please read the manual. Your old electrician likely did. The old charger had a dial that you would need to set to match your breaker setting. I believe that it would only take 80% of what breaker you had, so you probably have a 50 amp breaker. You need to connect to it’s WiFi network on the new charger to fully set it up. But I can’t believe that Tesla would let you use the charger at full power without setting it up properly first.

  • @sherizaahd
    @sherizaahd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    right, you have a 50 amp service to the garage, which means that 40 amps is the safe rate for your breaker, if you want to do 48 amps you should upgrade your service to 60 amps to maintain the safe 80% consistent draw.

    The old "wall connector" (not charger - the charger is inside the car) was limited to 40A by a selection switch inside it. 40A is correct due to it being on a 50A circuit (80%). The new one should have been limited to 40A during initial setup using the app. 48A is only acceptable if on a 60A circuit.

    Your electrician did the right thing in limiting the current of the old one to 40A, and you may have just created a fire hazard. At 4:31 in the video you can see you've got a 50A breaker. I can't quite tell the gauge of wires you have running in the wall, but for 8 GA Copper THHN the max ampacity is 55A *if* all your connections are rated for 90decC heat. BUT for continuous use (Load expected to be at maximum for 3 hours or more) you need to downrate it to 80% of capacity due to heat buildup - so 44A. On the old charger IIRC you could choose either 60A or 40A. On the new charger the onus seems to be on the electrician to size it right - so depending on your wire size you may have created a possible fire hazard. Either way, please check your wire gauge and breaker size / connections.

    I set one up using 4 AWG and only set it too 60 amps because that’s what the customer wanted. There is a dial inside the charger where you can switch it from 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 amps

  • @Casey.Hillman
    @Casey.Hillman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Not gonna lie; I literally had anxiety watching this. The power to the circuit should have been cut before opening the wall charger and you cannot safely increase the load (amperage) without changing the circuit breaker and cable size (unless it was already good enough). Code requires the load only pull 80% continuous of the rated breaker; so for 48 amp continuous load you would need a 60 amp breaker and 4 gauge wire which does not appear to be what was shown in the video. I would get a second opinion from a different electrician unless the breaker/wire changes were done but just not shown in the video.

    Your old one was probably limited to the charging power. You did have a 50amp in your breaker but is your wire only rated for 40amps? Thats a big difference when your pushing power through so if anything I would dial the new one back to 40amps also you don't overheat the wire and trip your breaker or cause problems if it wasn't wired with thick enough wire. I gotta look and see if people are upgrading their chargers and pick up a used one cheap one of these days :P

    You likely had the dip switches inside the old one set to 40AMP. The new one auto sets it based on software you don’t have to manually set it. So since your electrical allowed 48 it set it to 48.

  • @NewYorkIslesJJ
    @NewYorkIslesJJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The wire sizing is fine. The breaker being only a 50 amp is the potential problem. If the Tesla is drawing 48, you're at risk of it tripping constantly and the breaker going bad faster than it should. You are only allowed to put 80% of the load of the rating of the breaker. In this case it would be 40 amps.

    It’s because in the model s and x at some point you could order it with onboard dual chargers. So if you had those it would go up to the top amps.
    Since then Tesla removed the option and all cars have a single charger onboard so you’d never go over 48 amps.
    A supercharger bypasses those onboard chargers and feed dc current directly into the battery.
