I'm surprised that the electrical room was buzzing so hard with barely anything on. Security, if you see this... Thanks for giving us an opportunity to say goodbye to the store. ❤️
Before the Great Northern Mall in Clay New York had water pipes burst and they closed down I put a picture of the abandoned Sears at that mall online on Facebook. People said that that's merely for security purposes. They just leave the lights on for security to not encourage Vandallism and not encourage theft. But if you ask me that just does waste money running all that electricity in a place like that when you don't need it but yeah if they did put it on motion sensors like they did in this video then that would save a lot of energy because the lights would cut on when you walked in a room and they would cut off when you leave a room.
@@Prnencetti When I worked at Caldor (admittedly decades ago), they would turn off ALL the lights at the end of the day when the employees left. They said it would make it HARDER for would-be thieves because with the store pitch-black they'd have to bring their own light, AND, with thermal motion detectors, the police are already on their way. But yeah, I wonder who's paying the electric bill too. JC Penney? The mall owners? The electric company sure doesn't give that stuff away for free!
It was so cool to see you film a video of an abandoned retail store! I do enjoy watching all of your videos on your TH-cam Channel! Have a JC Penneylicious Day! Stay awesome!
I’m still upset that I didn’t get to see this location during liquidation, so I’m glad to see what it looks like now. It’s very weird seeing it without the clothing but when you’re inside of it. Don’t know if my logic is making any sense here, but you get what I mean. Great video!
Huge stores look tiny on the inside when all the shelving is gone after they close down. Walmart for example feels huge when the store is open, but when one closes down and you can see from one corner to the other, it feels tiny! It makes you think "all that crap fit in there?!"
@@christiangonzales7429 I always get that same feeling in myself too, when the store shelves are removed from a store after its store closing sale. Yep totally know what you mean, that you get that feeling 'all that merchandise and shelves fit in there?'.
There’s an partially abandoned mall in Tiffin, Ohio. The theater is still in use and a few exterior stores but the interior is abandoned. Figured you would appreciate this as a lead.
These are hands-down your best videos Wallie, the ones where you get INSIDE abandoned places! Nice! That boo-doop,! boo-doop! beeping reminds me of that Ames store you were in, where the whole interior was rotting away but you could still hear that boo-doop!, boo-doop! coming from somewhere in the back. For 17 years, 24 hours a day, just boo-doop! boo-doop! FAITHFULLY, every 7 seconds, just waiting for someone to put the key in and de-activate the alarm. It's eerie and heroic at the same time.
One of the two JCPenney stores in Indianapolis closed, which opened in a former Kmart in 2006. It was basically brand new, and had even received a bit of a renovation a few years back. It was a super strange layout, as it was super narrow and long and in a strip center. It never really did too well for them, as the big multilevel location at Castleton Square has always been a popular store in the area.
That was pretty cool and how easy it was just to walk around. That's good that they gave you no trouble at all. Thanks for taking us around Wallie and stay warm as well.
I've come across many vacant anchor stores, only once with the gate wide open. This whole time I was getting anxious that either you'd get caught or the gate would've been down.
There is a Penney's at Golf Mill that is still open... but now you have to pay for everything on the first floor. Golf Mill is dying... no more Sears. Just Burlington Coat Factory, Target and Penney's for anchors. Wallie, great video. Without the Kmart here, I forget what it is like to walk into a department store.
Value City Furniture is a Golf Mill anchor, too. But from what I've read online, they haven't confirmed they will be among the stores sticking around there, when the demalling project starts.
That is first abandoned JCPenney that I have ever seen you definitely don't get to see that every day plus I have I have never ever seen abandoned JCPenney that is definitely something I would never thought I would see that and that is definitely first for me :)
Great video man! I feel like its pretty rare to be in a abandoned store that's recently cleaned out and not dirty and weather damaged/vandalized. With it being so clean and having the electric still on it is a liminal space lovers dream.
thank god its people like wallie doing videos of dying retail.in a few short years, all of them will be gone and all we will have is videos and memories
Wow! Good video! Your lucky that you didn't run into that homeless person or someone else in that store! I can't believe all of those blueprints and those leftover computers and cash registers! Wonder if they will be sold off. Sad to see these stores going away!
glad you made it out of the store, Kayla might have had to use cutting torches or bolt cutters to get you out...lol...anyway the store looks better than i thought it would, i was expecting to see a lot more trash laying around yeah it sure is cold, I'm in the Pittsburgh area too...can't wait for spring.... enjoyed the video
All the lights are wires to occupancy sensors .. by the fact some came on before you got in a room there sound/movement combos. They listen for sound combined with movement. They are required in most commercial business now for energy efficiency. Thus the lights automatically turn off after a set period of no activity
Thanks wallie iwas so scary that you would of get in trouble for coming in that area it was so cool seeing it like that so happy you made it out with no trouble :D
I work at a JCPenney store. 😋 While I’m there, I take pictures of our store and the different layouts of the new seasonal sets. I know someday it will all end. I don’t think JCP will last another 10 years as a company. 😕
Awesome wallie ! There is a abandoned Simply Market in France that the door was open. Come check it out 6 February at the La Discotheque 1/2 ! The original Simply Market closes 20 April.
Amazon is taking over sad but true we lost Zellers Dept Store in Canada a few years ago sad to see.The World we live now is an online one i myself like to go to a store and see it for real.
Wallie we have an abandoned Walmart down in south bend on portage they closed down last year, and an abandoned burger king been abandoned awhile my bro worked there as a teenager.
Awesome tour! How are you not going to tell us which mall this is 😂 I see from comments though it looks like Pittsburgh Mills. Never understood why they built that mall in the first place
This looks a lot more like a 1978-1984 “greenhouse entrance” JCP (a single story version) on the inside than a 2005 one. The white ceramic tile in the main aisle and angled entrance threw me off too, that was also a feature of those stores. This must have been a holdover design.
I got to go into the abandoned JCPenny in Ottumwa iowa. A grocery store ( south Ottumwa Hy-Vee) rented out a small portion of the store to have something similar to a tent sale in the old space. I snuck behind the curtains and got a peek at the former JCPenny. I believe Kohl's coming to town is what drive them out of business. The store was small and dated.
What a shame, alot of time and money was put into this mall, and it really never took off like they hoped for. It is the most unique and beautifully crafted mall in the Pittsburgh area, too bad it's just about done. at least the strip mall portion of this property is doing very well though.
I wonder if all the stores use the same exact alarm system. Because in some Ames video I heard that alarm and in Kmart videos I also heard that alarm and now in JCPenney videos I'm hearing that alarm. So I wonder if all the stores aims Kmart JCPenney did they all used the same alarm system and the same exact alarms because they all sound exactly the same from videos in the past that I've watched ware i heard that alarm.
This is bad for consumers, Whether or not you like Penny's, fewer choices and less competition is not good. When Walmart and Target are all that's left, you will put up with whatever service they provide and whatever they charge.
My mom worked at JC penny's for 23 years there were alot of good memory there I use to run around the sales floor an could do what I want I would sometimes hangout with the employees jc penny treated us like family I rember the break room was very small the table took up all the space it also had a hair cutlery witch I use to get Mt hair done there for free everyone was so nice there but when jc Penny got a new boss that when it went down hill they were rude an treated everyone like crap an my mom decided to quit an 5 years after the store got closed down qn now it's a planet fitness yay all them memory's now turned into sweat an tears
Sadly it looks like the Sears brand is being relegated to the smaller hometown stores as their landmark department store chain dies a slow, painful death.
Wallie, I have something I would like to give you for your collection. It involves K-Mart. I worked at one in Rio Grande NJ for 16 years and I recently came across something you may be interested in. How can I contact you to explain further?
Convenience has drove Malls to fail...along with prices soaring out of control. Now we are going through Covid which feeds to more convenience. Amazon is making a fortune off of convenient shopping. But as we all know. Only the strong survive. Thanks WallieB.
Yes mostly free-standing stores with the occasional new mall anchor. JCPenney opened in a former Lord and Taylor in Houston about 2006, it is the nicest store in Houston.

A huge surprise. Most security guards are huge Karens and will make endless hell for you over really anything usually.
I miss old school JCPenney. They used to have really well made clothing in classic styles and phenomenal sales back in the day.
Yes indeed, JC Penney had awesome sales back then.
Insane man. Keep getting luckier and luckier with these places still being accessible
What mall
It's pretty unfortunate now that we live in a time where places like this won't exist in a couple of years.
It’s always surprised me that you haven’t encountered someone at some point Wallie . This was really a good episode. 👍👌
My nightmare would be that it would close and I couldn't get out. Glad you got out easily.
