Hi Minisa! I saw your work for the first time today on a Pyrography site on Facebook and just happened across this instructional of yours this evening! Thanks for the tips! I can't believe you do such fabulous work with a simple Walnut Hollow burner! That's amazing! Thank you for the tips and inspiring me to pick up my burner again after ten years of not using it! I KNOW I'll never be as God as you, but hopefully I will be the best I can be with it! ~ Maggie Harman
Thanks! I've had a walnut hollow burner for large black areas, but you use it in ways I didn't think of. I like your "burning in circles" for toning effect. Really nice!
Maybe the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen. Partly the subject matter, but mostly your talent and skill. Thank you for doing this fabulous piece of art. :)
Minisa. I like that you demonstrate that an inexpensive tool (with lots of practice) gets such great results. I thought I would have to get a $200+ unit to get started like others show. Thanks.
One way to help predict what the wood will look like when you put the finish on, is to wet it with water. Just the surface. But it definitely helps with predicting the outcome.
Beginner Burner: I do a lot of Scroll Saw Wood Art projects and would like to burn designs onto some of my projects, but was having a lot of problems with burning.. Your tips on burning have been very helpful, would like to see more on what equipment is better to use(Burning Tips), wood grain issues and types of wood that would burn better. Thank you very much.... Please show more techniques..
Greetings Tim. :) Thank you for watching. I've had a very busy summer trying to finish up burnings and getting ready for an art show so I haven't posted another video yet. I am in the process of creating an instructional DVD that covers a lot more techniques and issues such as wood and equipment. I will post updates for the DVD on my Facebook page: facebook.com/MinisaCustomDesign Thanks again for your interest. :)
Interesting Minisa! I do all that with the universal tip. I actually ground the nib off of a shader to use for snake scales and leaves once. But I never use it to actually burn anything. Shaders make you work much harder than you can with a large universal tip. I am intrigued to see you using a shader for all of these textures. :) Your bison is quite nice! Kudos!
Thank you for sharing. You have helped me understand and can now start practicing. Would love to see more as this really was a tremendous help. Regards Margaret Brisbane Australia
GREAT tutorial with GREAT tips! I especially appreciated the easy in-easy out tip. I'll definitely be watching for more of your beautiful work. Thanks!
TO EVERYONE WHO HAS COMMENTED: I'm very sorry that it's taken me so long to respond to you all. I've had the worst time trying to sign in to my account... youtube has been driving me crazy! Anyway, I'll be sure to respond to each of you. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope you all have a great day. :)
Very talented! This was the first of your videos I’ve watched but did subscribe. Nice to see someone doing this level work with the same wood burning tool I have that was purchased from hobby Lobby instead of some overpriced $300 machine that most of us watching these videos will not own. Thank you!
Great video! I bought the same burner you have this week and thanks to your video have made a few signs ect . I don't know if I will ever get to this caliber but your video helped me open up the box and get to work like i new what I was doing!! thanks for that! What tip/technique would you use to fill in block style letters?? I used the rounded tip and it covered a lot of ground but it was uneven looking...maybe that how it is supposed to look. Thanks for the help awesome work!
+Creston Leifried I usually use the mini-flow point to outline letters then use the flow point to fill them in. If the lettering is very small then I will just use the mini-flow point. For smoother text, try not to press down very hard. Just allow the burner to float across the top of the wood. I hope this helps and I'm so sorry for the late reply.
TO ALL RECENT COMMENTS: I apologize for not responding to the recent comments. I usually check this page on my phone and it showed that no one was commenting on the video. I'll keep a better eye on things with my computer from now on.
Best of the works in wood burning that I have seen . I would like to know as timber for Bison is Cross section of a Stem. As this dries up in due to prolonged environmental effects would it not develop cracks. If so, How to protect it?
Thank you :) I've been burning on these basswood ovals for 5 years now and I haven't had problems with them drying and cracking. I purchase them from Walnut Hollow and I'm not sure how they process the lumber but I've had great luck with their products so far.
where do you get those tree dic things? ....................Why sir, they just grow on trees. You could get a log and cut it at angle and there you are . Splendid ! Thanks for a great Vid. Brilliant I have just started pyro. Very inspirational and helpful Thankyou and you have a good day! Thankyou.
Can you please answer this question ..................... I have asked on a few channels about it .... The Piece of wood you are using is not white when it is cut , do you have another piece of wood clued to the base , or do you use some kind of paint or something to give you the white starting point ? Ive seen this setup on a few channels , but I cant get an answer as to what wood they are using or how they setup the medium in preparation for the project ................ I am just starting out with this style of artwork , and I would really like to know this answer .............. Any tips would be greatly appreciated ..... Also , great work , and you have an amazing talent ...... Thank your for sharing .........
Your work is awesome! Thanks for the helpful tips. I am just getting started in wood burning, and was wondering where you find photos like the bison to transfer onto the wood. Also, how do you go about transferring the photo to the wood? Thanks, Keith
+tarheelk1969 Thank you. I actually took the photo of the bison while on vacation in Yellowstone. Morguefile.com has a lot of free photos that you can use that are copyright free. I use graphite transfer paper to transfer the image onto the wood. Just slip it underneath your reference photo and trace the image onto the wood.
Juan, The burner in the video is not adjustable. It is just a constant heat. To cool it down for lighter tones simply blow on the tip with your breath.
Minisa, Nice video, love your work! You really are head and shoulders above lots of the other video's here on TH-cam ! I'm a woodworker (flat work and turner) so I'd like to start signing and dating some of my pieces. I've also had some requests for notes on gifts like, "To My Beloved ........ " and date ! I'm insecure about what equipment to get as a beginner. I'm interested in what type of power I'll need (watts, amps), what type of tips are best for writing (worried about changes in direction, pull / push, against or w/ the grain when forming circular letters. A lot of my work are very small jewelry boxes (ring boxes) so the lack of room demands smaller lettering. I'd appreciate any advise on how to begin and thank you for your generous consideration, Steph_Louisiana
I have just bought a woodburning pen like yours to give it ago, I'm not artistic at all and would never be able to do the life like pictures you do, they are so good. I currently transfer images onto my wood and do it that way but I'm really no good with shading. How do you know which part to shade as you're going along? Have you any tips for a beginner such as myself? When I look at a picture my mind is just confused shouting where do I shade.
Hi Minisa! I love your work and you really are very talented. :) I saw that you make coloured ones as well. Can I ask what material do you use for colouring? Thanks, Erika
+Benkő Erika Thank you :) I usually use colored pencil for subtle shading and acrylic paint for bolder color. I hope that helps and I'm so sorry for the late reply.
Minisa, I love your techniques and the finished products are beautiful! I noticed in this video that you didn't mention the heat setting you used. Did you adjust or use the same heat with multiple layers?
Greetings Burt. So far I haven't had any issues with the basswood ovals splitting. Of course I'm not cutting them myself either... I get them from WalnutHollow . com. I have cut some very large pine rounds and yes, they did split. I believe it was the shrinking that occurs while drying. Sorry I'm not much help on this one. :(
I have this exact burning tool. My issue with it is that I’m unable to get it hot enough to use satisfactorily. I realize the type of wood I’m burning on makes all the difference. However, I feel the thermostat doesn’t give me flexibility I require.
Is it possible to do this on a painted surface? What kind of wood is best? I've tried on some plywood, then painted it but when I start to burn it just doesn't seem to work well? Thanks!
+Kirk Bolam I would not suggest burning on a painted surface. The burner could release potential toxins from the paint into the air that you might breathe. I would recommend burning on unfinished wood only. I prefer to use basswood for my work. If you'd like to add paint/color, I would wait until the burn is complete and paint it afterwards. I often add color but I always wait until I'm done burning. Hope this helps and have a great day.
Greetings Wilson. :) Yes, I was using the burner at full temp. To do the lighter areas I just lightly blow on the tip to cool it down. I would prefer to use the flow point for lettering instead of the shader point shown in the video.
I'm finding this fascinating Minisa, thank you for sharing your skills. I feel this is more 3 dimensional drawing where if it was being drawn by a pencil you build up the hardness of a line but, I must ask, do you draw out the picture lightly on the wood and use that as a plan or use photographs or is it all just from your mind??? Hi from England 👍🏼😊
Hi Veronica. They are just simple gardening gloves from Walmart. They help a little bit with the heat, but not much. If you happen to find anything better, let me know! :)
I carve signs with a router and have started playing around with pyography. I have access to log rounds like you are using - my question to you is how do you keep the rounds from splitting. BTW nice job on the buffalo. Burt

Incredible. I never cease to be amazed at how many different textures can be achieved with a single tool!

That's great, Bob! Best of luck with your new hobby and possible sales! :) Thanks for watching and have a great day.

TIG specific welding gloves, made of thin leather and designed for feel and dexterity, would be ideal for this.

Do you use a wire tip burner like a colwood or burnmaster?

can I ask you what kind of wood is the easiest to start burning on?
is the burner connected to a heat temperature control?
Are you using your tool at full temp? Also would this tip be good for fine lettering? Great vid! Thanks for posting it.
Greetings Wilson. :) Yes, I was using the burner at full temp. To do the lighter areas I just lightly blow on the tip to cool it down. I would prefer to use the flow point for lettering instead of the shader point shown in the video.
What is the most suitable kind of wood to work with?
I prefer to use basswood. :)
What temp are you using for the light shading?
+Tyler Belding On the Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool, I usually use the orange zone for most of my light shading.
THANK YOU

Grant Job.how can i buy those gloves? Whats the name?
Hi Veronica. They are just simple gardening gloves from Walmart. They help a little bit with the heat, but not much. If you happen to find anything better, let me know! :)
Do you have any technique to pyrography the sea, that you can share with me?
where do you get the tree disc things?
Hi, minisa, would I like to know what pyrography pen you have?
I use the Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool
I want to get into this art I have an idea for a project I want to do. :)
what kind of gloves do you use? do they have a special name? how much do they cost? I keep burning my fingers.. :(
What is the name of stamp you used in than video? Where I can get it? Online?
+dubhead dena Sorry for the late reply. That is called the shading point and you can buy them individually through www.walnuthollow.com
I carve signs with a router and have started playing around with pyography. I have access to log rounds like you are using - my question to you is how do you keep the rounds from splitting. BTW nice job on the buffalo. Burt
that wood surface is a paper(white color)?
+李孝 The wood is basswood also known as American Linden tree. It's a very light colored wood.
Where did you get the glove in your video?
+kinky89 This is a simple gardening glove from Walmart. It helps a little bit with the heat, but not much. I wear it mostly to protect against accidental burns.
I'm jus getting into pyrography is there any tips for a noobie?
Greetings Jason. I'd be happy to help answer any questions you might have about pyrography. You're welcome to browse my facebook page or message me directly. I check facebook much more often than here on youtube. facebook.com/#!/MinisaCustomDesign Thanks :)
Hallo minisa, i am from Morroco and i am looking for a rasertip ss-d10 if you can help me. Thanks.
one simple question do you use temperature control when shading
+Mafios DaVinci When this video was created, I didn't have an adjustable temperature burner. So I just blew on the point with my breath to cool it down for the lighter shades. I've since upgraded to an adjustable temperature and only turn it down for the super light shades.
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question art runs through my family so I have that going for me now I'm just trying to transfer it to wood my first wood burning went actually very good I'm just trying to get the shading correct and the way you create a black solid background without multiple overlapping burn marks it's absolutely phenomenal. I use the same exact tip you do on a lot of my work I think I just have to leave a tip flat to create that dark black background I like to use basswood
You are most welcome. I'm happy to help out. Yes, those black backgrounds are quite tedious. It took me a while to get them smooth. Just keep a light pressure and let the heat do the burning. :)
@@MinisaWoodBurningUniversity whats model used? In vídeo?

Thanks so much!
How you make the solid shade on wolf
Do you draw on the wood first or just freehand?
those that work in veneer?
is the wood painted white?
Thank you! :)
Where the tool was sold?
+thu Nguyen You can buy them in the United States at Walmart, craft stores such as Michaels and Hobby Lobby, online through www.walnuthollow.com and www.amazon.com
what kind of wood do you use?
+Tun Va Ech I use basswood
where can i get a glove, and what is its proper name? google keeps showing me glove boxes?
I am using a simple gardening glove. It doesn't help a lot with the heat but it's better than nothing and has saved my hand from accidental burns.
thats what i've been using. it isn't that great. im going to try a welding glove. im afraid i might sacrifice some dexterity there though. are there gloves made for this? you know... like made of dragon scales or something? lol
astralman77 LOL, not that I know of, but if you ever find some please let me know! :)
i've recently started using a welding glove. it probly isn't as flexibl as her glove... but provides great heat resistance.
Julia Jenkins Thank you Julia :)
Yes, I get all of my wood through WalnutHollow . com
bravissima
what heat setting?
