    I think the gender/body swap was Roddenberry saying "Fuck it. Let's heavily imply that it's canon on the very last episode of Star Trek."
    They touched so much in this episode and there were numerous other implications to their relationship. Whether romantic or platonic, Jim and Spock do have a relationship. And there's no way that anyone can really deny that...I'm not saying in a strictly romantic sense, because that's not what their relationship is about. It's about completion through another.

    Ah, the last episode of The Original Series, the one that finally confirmed that Spirk is canon for all blind people out there who deny it.
    I mean, it doesn't take that much of comprehension to remember that Dr. Lester's body is occupied with Kirk and Spock acknowledges it too and yet he takes the captain by the hand which is definitely unnatural for Vulcans AND Spock (although he's half Vulcan), because remember kids you DO NOT touch a Vulcan, you do not give them high fives or handshakes, they are sensitive alien beings.
    I just love these space husbands!

    It's more than Spock just grabbing Kirk. If you look at the scene where they're running from the tiger, Kirk actually has his arm around Spock and they're grabbing each others' hands. Then they both run over to a wall and kind of kknock into each other; it's a cute scene.

  • @BellyDiva14

    Spock assesses the situation as he holds onto Janice*Kirk*s hand knowing Janice's frail body would never survive an attack. Protect Jim at all costs! Not only from the obvious, immediate threat of unstable Kirk*janice* & security, but from Jim's own instinct of trying to fight his way out of a situation, as he has done so many times before. Spock was grateful for DrMcCoy's presence: a level-headed individual who would step in if Kirk*janice* took things too far. Keep her calm, he told himself.

    I love this scene. Honestly, the actors/producers/crew/director must either have had blinders on when that was filmed, or it was some subconscious ACCEPTANCE of the actual CANON of K/S that made them all turn a blind eye! Whatever it was, I'll take it -- OH yeah! Thanks for sharing.

    I feel like even William Shatner ships spirk. For instance, they were filming the scene where there was a hearing in this episode but janice was still "kirk". Anyways, Shatner was supposed to say: "Spock give it up. Come back to the "Enterprise" family. All charges will be dropped. And the madness that overcame all of on Camus II will fade and be forgotten."
    Instead Shatner accidently flubs the line and says "Spock, Its always been you, you know its always been you. Say that you love me too."
    IM NOT EVEN JOKING. HE ACTUALLY ACCIDENTLY SAID THAT. anyways that was a cool thing i found out lol.

    Depends on the culture. In the Middle East and some places in India it's quite normal for straight men who are friends or especially relatives to walk around holding hands or with their arms around each other, because personal space is different there.

    • @123FionaE
      @123FionaE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      And that is exactly what makes this so meaningful. On Vulcan, where Spock was raised, holding hands is an extremely affectionate gesture typically reserved for only the closest loved ones. This is because Vulcan hands are a very sensitive area due to their touch-telepathy and therefore place high value on personal space in general. So the cultural differences are precisely what makes this moment (and every other moment Spock casually touches Kirk) so important, it may mean nothing in many countries, but in this context it is very telling.

      yup. They do. A hand touch in a certain way is a Vulcan kiss. Being that Vulcans are touch telepaths and some of the reason they consciously try not to touch each other is basic social etiquette; to be polite and not "get into anybody's business". Watch the behavior on episode STOS "Journey to Babel" when the couple is alone. Sarek smiles and he gives Amanda a lingering kiss. Watch what Sarek does.

    "The Turnabout Intruder" is an odd and flawed episode, but I always thought there was a lot of interesting material there. While it seems horribly sexist, at the same time it makes the case that gender doesn't matter! If Kirk in a woman's body could be captain, than Starfleet should let all women be captains. Which of course later they did.

    It's a false illusion. Spock extended his hand (arm, as matter of fact) to hold Kirk/Lester as they leave the cell and someone is coming. Soon he realizes there's nothing to do to prevent what WAS happening already. Then, the camera position seems to falsely indicate that they are holding hands, even they are not. They are just side by side by each other... It's so simple. Why to create a false mysticism about something unreal...???

    What Roddenberry wanted to do was show how awful it would be for a manly man like Kirk to be trapped in the body of a mere female. Given Roddenberry's attitude toward women, he felt it would be like the worst, most shameful thing ever. That's what was going on here, you can play it any way you want but Roddenberry was behind the declaration in this episode that women can't be starship captains. In staff meetings he said stuff about women that was shocking even for that time.

      ksol1460tv Well, Janeway was probably one of my favorite Star Trek captains, she was sooooooo good. Just what Q said, great leader, but always a woman.

    • @EdiaStanfordBruce
      @EdiaStanfordBruce 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roddenberry created in Spock a character that really got way past him in so many ways including the possibility that our most beloved Vulcan-human hybrid had the ability to walk both sides of the street through the mind-meld. I am crossing my arms and patting my foot with impatience in my mind with that one. In "Turnabout (STO)"He wanted a setup to laugh at and shame women with. It backfired. The actors who played as the "switched" bodies mirrored each other perfectly. It was a surprising joy to see Kirk as a woman when I saw it first as a child. It inspired me. What I and many women need today is a mentor like James Tiberius Kirk. In that episode we see a Janeway coming. It twists the imagination as to what women can be without society's crushing gender-typing.
      And the Doctor in the body of Kirk? Her body was different, but her mind...that's another matter. She was like a child wearing clothes two sizes too large. She devolved so that her anger and pettiness became even more evident. Is that Rodenberry telling me that "female emotion" makes keeping hold of reason and authority impossible? Is that Roddenberry telling me that I should be angry and unhappy because my soul attached to a certain physical form as it fell through the ether into this existence? Sir, I question whether you learned anything at all during your voyage on earth. I bet you couldn't handle a real woman--human or Vulcan. Movie studios still can't. Look at the ST movies they turn out. RIP, by the way, Great Bird of the Galaxy. Are you looking down to see how the characters you made developed?

    Watch Shore Leave. There is a scene when Kirk and Spock are running from imaginary beings. At one point Spock grabs Kirk, but we see that Kirk actually runs off leaving Spock to fend for himself. I think it's one-sided. ;-)

      Shipping really isn't an agenda, and while I do think there was nothing actually intended with it... Vulcan's touching someone's hand is very, very intimate.
